Burning of Radio Phoenix is a blow – Mulongoti

Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, Michael Mulongoti, has described the burning of Radio Phoenix studios as a sad development to the country’s media fraternity.

And government has assured Radio Phoenix management that it would do everything possible to help the station get back to its normal operations after a comprehensive investigation on the cause of the fire was completed.

Mr. Mulongoti, who is also Chief Government Spokesperson, said the burning of radio phoenix studios was a serious hindrance to the development of the station.

He was speaking in Lusaka today shortly after touring Radio Phoenix studios which were gutted yesterday after a suspected electrical fault.

He said the station was an equal partner to the development of the country’s media fraternity through the dissemination of information to the people in the country.

Mr. Mulongoti has since urged radio phoenix management not to panic as government was doing everything possible to facilitate the coming back of the station on air.

And Radio Phoenix Proprietor, Errol Hickey, said the fire burnt antennas, recording studios and the accounts and marketing departments to ashes.

Mr. Hickey further disclosed that over US$300, 000 is needed to procure the destroyed equipment.

He assured the country that the radio station would get back on air after threes days time.

The fire, which started at 14:30 hours, is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault.

The inferno burnt the entire top floor of ZIMCO house on Lusaka’s Cairo road and destroyed all radio phoenix antennas, recording studios and the accounts and marketing departments.

  19. These fires in Zambia are a serious insurance scam. A certain indian colleague once told me that when he discovered that employees had been swindling him, he simply revalued his stock and set the shop on fire and destroyed all accounting records. He went to the police and got a ploice report and went to the insurance company and claimed his money. Within a month, the shop was renovated and he fired all his workers. A lot ogf indians have been doing this in zambia. Even for cars, most of those cars burnt on streets are insurance scams. So Watch out, how can he reopen the studios in three days if all was destroyed? Connmen at work!! Afraid of instability if Sata wins!!!

His earlier sentiments about sorting out the media were really in bad faith and he must be condemned by all meaningful members of the society. Just after his sentiments, the station goes in flame! What can anybody think? He s behind it. If it were an opposition member who issued that statement it would have been a different story. Mulongoti watch out too! when your time comes to an end someone will sort you out too really!

    Don’t you think the station had some profits they make saved that they can set up a broadcast in three days? Mind you this is the oldest private owned station. They have been around for long time and I suppose they have cash somewhere.

    I think they will just set up a broadcasting studio for the time being. Phoenix indeed. Just like the phoenix bird huh!!!

  33. I hope Mulongoti is not promising tax payers money to restart this radio station. That is the job of the insurance company to give them that $ 300 000 they want. If they did not insure this joint after the first fire, then that is management’s problem. If govt puts money down to get this joint up, then I will believe it that they are the ones who burnt it down

I suspect Hickey burned the radio station for either insurance purposes or evading tax. The radio station has gone up in flames twice now…that is cause for worry. Hickey is a known shrewed businessman (pompwe) who can do anything to advance himself including burning his own radio station for self preservation. As for Ka Mulongoti!!! Radio Phoenix ceased to be a truly critical Radio about two years ago, the Radio is one of the sympathetic media to the powers that be, Hickey has since been appointed to several boards by the government.   108. I hope the equipments are insured coz its not the first time this is happening to radio phoenix. And this statement that this chap made “Mr. Mulongoti has since urged radio phoenix management not to panic as government was doing everything possible to facilitate the coming back of the station on air” I don’t trust this chap if he is allowed to pump his nose in this issue then it will start runing under government order, they wont be left along “there will be no let the people talk”.
