Mysterious disease originating from Zambia kills 3 in SA

Share

Hospitals in the Gauteng province in South Africa have been placed on high alert following the death of three people from a highly infectious disease that originated in Zambia.

On Sunday the Gauteng health department said three people had died in Johannesburg.

“We are on high alert following the confirmation of three cases of an unknown, highly infectious disease which has since led to three deaths,” the department said in a statement.

Medical advisor for public health Dr Chika Asomugha said the first patient was a South African expatriate living in Lusaka,  who worked as a tourist guide for a safari company. She was evacuated by air ambulance to Morningside Clinic in Johannesburg on 12 September.

She had severe flu-like symptoms, diarrhoea and a rash. The unnamed woman was critically ill when she arrived and died shortly afterwards at the Morningside Medi-Clinic.

“Blood samples were taken and the results were not conclusive of any particular disease, including the viral hemorrhagic fevers,” the department said.

The second patient was a Zambian male paramedic who had accompanied the woman to South Africa. He was admitted on September 27 at the same facility with flu-like symptoms and treated for a variety of infections.

“His condition initially improved but later deteriorated on Wednesday, October 1 and he died the following day,” the statement said.

Investigations for viral hemorrhagic fever and other formidable infectious diseases were conducted and the results were negative.

A nurse at Morningside Medi-clinic who came into contact with the first patient became ill with flu-like symptoms and was subsequently admitted to the Sir Albert Robinson hospital on the West Rand on Wednesday.

“Her condition deteriorated on Saturday and she passed away yesterday (Sunday). Viral hemorrhagic fever and other formidable infectious diseases were negative,” said the statement.

“We have not yet got a complete diagnosis, but experts are running as many tests as possible,” he said.

  1. Can the Zambian health authorities identify who this lady came in contact with and quarantine them. The authorities need to trace her movements, behaviour etc and ascetain where she may have got this disease

  2. Yes find out her behaviour while in Z. These ba zungus are full of imisango. You might find she was doing a monkey, or some weird stuff. How come the locals dont have this disease. This disease cant be highly infectious if it was the whole crew on the plane should have been infected, this includes the pipo inthe wards where she was.

  3. Hmmmm………..lately there has been a reported increase of a severe flu & cough besides malaria in Zambia.I just survived the latter

  4. # 4 I IGREE WIH YOU LET THEM CHECK WHO THE LADY SLEPT WITH AND QUARANTINE WHOEVER HAD CONTACT OF ANY FORM WITH THE LADY. THERES ONLY ONE HUMAN ORGAN THAT IS AN EFFECTIVE TRANSMITTER OF DANGEROUS DISEASES INFACT I WOULD SUGGETS THAT WHOEVR HAD CONTACT WITH THE LADY BE AMPUTETED OF THE SAME ORGAN WITHOUT ANY DELAY. LETS PUT HEALTH ABOVE PLEASURE, SOME OF THESE ORGANS ARE JUST FOR PLEASURE AND NOTHING MORE.

  5. it cant be like Ebola, the times at which the pipo are dying is more than 72 hours. It took almost a month for the third patient to die. I think we are just panicking for nothing

  6. Ka Mulongoti made this disease to clear out PF, UPND, Lukuku and the media(The Post & QFM). Careful people. You heard it here first

  7. Many fools advocate for a state of the art staduim for Zambia soccer makulas instead of structures which would help the local person.
We should have a disease and control center with the state of the art facilities to counter such illness at govt expense, as soon as they come up.
    This is embarrasing !!

  8. That safari camp where is it situated? VIVA SATA ABASH KK with your NDALAMA BANDA. Mulamu panse

  9. People this is a serious case, I don’t see the funny part not that I don’t have a sense of humour.

  10. But where is it mentioned that it is a sexually transitted illness? Those symptoms point to bird flu. People like #16,17 and 18 here have never heard of such, obviously.

  11. Its a pity this site is accessed by all sorts of characters. This is a serious matter which needs serious attention and well thought response. Not the spontaneous outbursts as seen above. Can somebody in the know please come to the rescue? Not dumb bloggers. T

  12. Zambia is for hardcore people not tuba zungu,i don’t think any Zambian i mean real Zambian can die from such symptoms.bena zed nibolimba bakumba mugodi na mwala ba pola without mankuala

  13. Yes I meant to say that the flu and cough we have been experiencing (my family included) could be an aspect of moist winds blowing in from some where!!!

  14. #7 you are so ignorant. There has been no mention of it being a sexually transmitted disease. And if it was, the paramedic & nurse treating her would not have fallen ill.

  15. AS EXPERTS IN DISEASES, THE FIRST THING TO DO IS TO RULE OUT SEX WITH SCIENTIFIC EFFIDENCE, IF THAT HAPPENS THEN WE WOULD HAVE RULED OUT THE ILLNESS COMING FROM ANIMALS THROUGH ACTS OF BEASTIALITY. THE NEXT IS TO CHECKOUT FOOD, DID THEY TAKE ANY WILD FRUITS ON SAFARY.IT LOOKS THE ILLNESS IS NOT AIRBONE OTHERWISE THE WHOLE CREW ON THE PLANE COULD HAVE BEEN IN HOSPITAL OR DEAD BY NOW. SO IF ITS NOT AIRBOURNE IT CAN EITHER BE SEX OR FOOD. HIEGENE COVERS BOTH SEX AND FOOD SO LETS JUST BRAINSTORM USING THE ELIMINATION METHOD ABOVE.

  16. could the ministry of health issue a statement to the effect. the flu pointing to zambia will do more damage in terms of frieghtening tourist to zambia. and also zambians will be barred from entering sa. it is crisis situation to say the least

  17. #24 I agree with you. Some people believe freedom of expression is equal to stupidity.

Apparently, Zambia has a well-equipped lab with very qualified staff who can do this job. I know bcoz most of you don’t know about it, you obviously don’t believe it. This problem has just popped up, and accordingly, it can easily be considered an isolated case. Yes, the scientist will rush there, and yes they will contain the case, and yes, they can do it. I love Zambia.

  18. Guys this is serious. I have a colleague who travelled to Zambia just over a week ago, spent 3 days at our offices last week, before flying home.

  19. Sure this bird flu chabe. This disease also originated from the first patient’s contacts and not from Zambia.Such a headline can lead to Zambia being declared a no go country.

  20. This disease is not in Zambia according to the story. the person who had it was working in Zambia for how long? we do not know did she fell sick in Zed? the paramedic is zedian. so it cud be that they got infected at belt (sp) bridge

  21. #34 you solidarity chants won’t do any good here! What we want is critical and sensible analysis of this problem.

Not long ago we had a mysterious fish disease killing all the fish in the Zambezi river on the Zambian side in Western province and your well-equipped lab and very qualified staff could not do any tangible job to date. What a shame!

  22. Maestro Hhehhehhehhe - LABELLED as a TRIBALIST BY a group of BEMBA-TRIBALISTS (mainly UNDEREDUCATED or Kaponyas) who are small DISTINCT group from the ORIGINAL NORMAL REAL BEMBA PEOPLE of Zambia, just because I am born Tonga and succesful Maestro Hhehhehhehhe - LABELLED as a TRIBALIST BY a group of BEMBA-TRIBALISTS (mainly UNDEREDUCATED or Kaponyas) who are small DISTINCT group from the ORIGINAL NORMAL REAL BEMBA PEOPLE of Zambia, just because I am born Tonga and succesful

Sad news. May the dead people’s souls out of this disease rest in peace and condolences to their families.

  23. The latest victim was a women who worked for the Morningside clinic
    October 06, 2008, 09:00

A fourth person with Viral Haemorragic Fever (VHF) symptoms has died. The virus has already claimed the lives of a Zambian national and two other people at the Morningside Clinic in Johannesburg. The woman was a cleaner at the clinic.

The National Health Department has issued an alert in Gauteng following these deaths. Unconfirmed tests indicate they may have died of the fatal Viral Haemorragic Fever.

An Outbreak Response and Tracking Team has been set up to contain any further spread. The department’s Zanele Mngadi says investigations are still underway into the cause of the deaths.

    Mngadi

  24. Kwena some one of you chaps on this blog are very useless.Thats why it will be very difficult for our country to develop because the so called educated people from our country MAFONTINI. We have a serious case here then you chaps are writting nonsense. Do you know how many non-Zambians who access this site? Do you know how much revenue will be lost because of the same Disease? Some of us are business people who want our fellow Zambians to have bread and butter. These people are not foolish to travel to Zambia for holidays/Safaris(Revenue for our people)after reading your ” lovely ” comments?. You shoud wakeup!!!

  25. The ministry of health in Zambia need to issue a statement, further more the name of the game ranch must be known to avoid further infection. # 36 is right clarification is needed especialy from the government otherwise Zambia can be declared a no go area for nothing

  26. yes this could be partly true. i also had some terrible flu which could not be cleared by antibios. let our experts look into this otherwise we could be wiped out just like that.

  27. As much as it as come to be known that the white lady was based in zambia, its not really fair for the South African authority to concluded that it originates from Zambia.Supposed this same lady had even made a trip outside zambia and later came in and the disease later manifested seriously, would we conclusively say it has cme from here?there are so many issues we need to consider,e.g her last movements, life style.Which safari company is this and where is it situated? The minister of health should immediately take it up

  28. I have been reading the comments being posted to this website in regard with the above mysteroius desease which has claimed three lives so far. I am very disappointed with LT readers in the way they are responding to this case which has souded to be a threat to our lives esprcially we Zambians. This problem can easly be solved if we can have people like #24,#31 and #34 who seems to have a steady approach to seriuos issues. Let us try to be seriuos guys

  29. Please, can someone levelheaded tell us how far this bizarre disease has spread in Zambia? Any deaths so far? Is the Zambian government withholding information…keeping the nation in the dark as usual?

People are panicking down here in SA.

It’s no time to have jackal guffaws here….lives have been lost.

  30. #6 and #21 you are a draw back if life. #21 what has Lusaka Central Police got to do with the serious issue poeple are discussing? Be serious

  31. Zambia just opened a lab that is equiped with the morden facilities and hopefully this is one of their first chanllenges.

  32. Talk about dumb bloggers. Ref: No. 49. I give up now. Will try my search elsewhere. But again, thats the Zedian attitude. Give up and let the wolves run the show. One day tukazanda fwebaba serious!!Tekale sana iyoo!!

  33. #46 Spot on mate. Couldn`t have put it better myself. It is sad that we have to accept every crap thrown at us.

Was this woman married? Did she have a husband/partner. If a Paramedic died, whay not the latter/former? What is the incubation period of this disease? Had she beed on holiday or not?

Just been listening to MetroFM of SA. Got to say it is being reported a bit differently there than is portrayed on here.

  34. Chief Mzilikazi (no. 53) I understand how you feel. Do not give up. These people will always be there, Be it on Yahoo, America, or wherever. Just do not stop writing because of them. Serious people’s posts are always read while the unwise posts are ignored. The best way is to ignore them and they will sink into oblivion. See my point Chief.

  35. This is a serious problem we have at our hands which will adversely impact on travel and safari companies in Zambia. It is big revenue loss we are talking about here. With the first world already suffering a financial meltdown, this will be a ‘galileo punch’ to our Zambian safari industry. Can someone from the Ministry of health do some damage limitation before the breeze picks speed and the world catches it!

  36. This is indeed a sad development I pray the Min of Health can quickly investigate this mysterious disease b/4 it becames epidemic.
I agree with all level headed blog’s please for once try this as a serious issue and contribute meaningfully.

  37. THIS IS A SERIOUS MATTER. AM AMAZED THAT PEOPLE CAN BE CRACKING SILLY JOKES ON A SERIOUS MATTER LIKE THIS… CAN WE BE SERIOUS

  38. Ka Wamutu #57. Stop being a coward. We do not have the truth yet. Like I said in #54 where are the facts that it came from Zed?

    Geeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

  39. Imagine that we have fools like Lulu, numbers 7,18,13 and 10 in Parliament worse still as either one as a head of state. Its time we started paying attention o the real issues in every situation, have you stopped to think about the locals who may have died and yet are not yet reported because it has not occured to whoever attended to these cases first to declare that they have an alarming situation at hand. Not all of us leave abroad and have access to proper health care facilities. Some of us are home and trying to make a living even in difficult situations, for all we know this disease or whatever experts can call it might be spreading right now and to think there has been no mention ofit

  40. Once again we see submissions that show total disrespect for the issue at hand and for the people who are victims of the same disease. When will we ever grow up and learn to deal with issues seriously and with the respect deserved. I really wonder what the future holds for this country of ours if the best we can produce is amongst some of the contributers on this site. Its a real shame.

  41. I agree with all the bloggers you have listed down. You ahve to investigate first before getting excited. Put measures in place and move to the next stage.

It is sad you keep on claiming under different names that you are in Zed when you are sad, lonely and desperate in a small room in Canada. Go back home or move on young man.

  42. Anthrax has broken out in some parts of Zambia, the first patient to die was a South African expatriate living in Lusaka who worked as a tourist guide for a safari company, it is very likely that there is a connection.

  43. Maestro, you are one funny person. I am always laughing at your long name. Condolences alone are not enough basa…WHAT DO WE DO???????????? Could LT please notify the Minister/y concerned. And let us have feed back. Not just talk about an issue without solutions.

  44. you guys i smell a rat race here from rsa. the article does not mention any names of the dead people including the zambian and where the white lady was working. this sounds like a war between the tour operators in zambia and south africa. we seem to be getting tourist destine to zambia more than rsa hence the demarketing. the govt should come out clearly and fast to difuse the eminant tourism catastrophe.

  45. We have organisations like the Cenre for Infectious Disease In Zambia, i hope they will take the situation very serious and start the investigations before it spreads to the rest of livingstone then the country eventually. Let us pray that it is neither Ebola or H5N1 (Bird Flu)

  46. Funny how this information is not in Zambia. Reports are of dead animals and no human has been reported dead in Zed. Alot of locals live in these game areas if really there was this epidermic, wouldnt there have been reports of hundreds of deaths of locals?

  47. THE WOMAN WAS IN CONGO FOR A HORSE RIDING COMPETITION A FEW DAYS BEFORE SHE GOT SICK. SHE IS PART OF THE MUZUNGU COMPOUND IN THE NEW KASAMA AREA!!!

  48. Dear AISL Community Members,

As many of you are aware, there is a large measure of concern about health following the death of a Lusaka resident, and two health care professionals who treated her.

  49. #31 THUS GOOD IDEA MY MAN, LETS BRAINSTORM THIS DISEASE AS THE SOLUTION TO IT IS WITHIN REACH. LET PEOPLE IN THE KNOW, LIKE HEALTH EXPERTS DO SOMETHING BEFORE ITS TOO LATE.

  50. The health threat is being investigated by the Center for Disease Control (in Atlanta and Zambia) in coordination with the Zambian Ministry of Health, and the National Institute for Disease Control and Virology in South Africa.

  51. #61, #62! I love it when I see that all hope is not lost! This disease has nothin to do with sex and all that rubbish being posted here! I personally am very worried becoz I happen to one of the people who happened to have been in the vicinity of where this lady was. At the moment am fine and so are the people that flew her down. Can we hear from serious people esp. doctors on wat could be the possible cause and how long before one knows that they have caught it also after being anywhere near a patient. This is wat we should be discussin and not wastin our time with silly posts.

  52. South Africans Doctors didnt just get it right!!!! If this lady had a diesease she came with it from South Africa. How long did she stay in Zambia?? How many people in Zambia have died of this mysterious disease? How many Zambians have died shortly after coming from South Africa. If someone or two die in Zambia shortly after coming from South Africa doesnt mean that teh disease originated from South Africa. It also depend on the previous lifestyles of the dead. Tour guides come into contactwith people from all obve r the world!! Doesnt this ring a bell. They should not narrow on Zambia. Hey Doctors, researchers, woke up!!!

  53. Some of your comments are just surprising and stupid. I guess it also gives an idea of how your perceive issues. But it would be great to investigate further and can we hear from the medical officials too

#68. Princess-y, (Natasha sana). Thank you very much.
On the remedy to this catastrophy, I wish the MOH takes this matter seriously intead of just escorting RBB to campaign. In fact, those campaigning and attending rallies should take extra care because it might catch up with one of them.
I am particularly worried about the so-called mamooth Political Rallies by the best COMEDIAN in the Zambian political history.
May you all have a great day and please make sure the disease does not get you.

  55. Nobody took a month to die…they have all died within about 3 weeks…..

And we are being told in SA that the danger comes and the infection is when people come into contact with the body fluids of the sick person…..

SA medical people have been very slow to react….the blood culture that they are waiting for takes 7 days to give results …..it should have been done after the second person died and by now we would know what it was…….

People must stop spreading a load of kak and rumors…..nothing gets found out or sorted out that way

#84, the comments show the level of education of some of the LT bloggers. As if that was not enough, you can even tell how many bloggers base their POSTINGS on here – LT – using real well researched data.
Most people are writing stuff and insults as if they are vomiting. Very sad. Let us all show maturity and write sensible things and arguments to the topics at hand.

  57. 21 It is true Central Police was on fire and some property was burnt to ashes, Paramillitary Tents and all their Properties, Vihecles inclusive.

  58. #1-Do you know the symptoms and signs of HIV? You cannot get HIV today and die two days later.
Learn more about HIV my brother. This highly infectious disease must seriously be investigated. This is more like Bird Flue.

  59. The feeling; first you get a heart ache, back ache, head ache, leg ache, fever and on the next day u get to think you got malaria. but after having your blood checked someone says, you have a flu virus.

    The cure;

Antibiotics and an antu virus injection.

    Research;

if you want to carry out some reseach go to Mazabuka nakambal clinic(Zambia sugar)
thats one place i saw a lot of people complaining of the same thing.

    good luck

  60. HH waboola (HH has come)
Countdown: 24 days and we are counting.
For your own personal information here are some of my names Maestro Hhehhehhehhe ‘Hamwaambwa Mugungulu Mwaanga’. I come from Mapanza where VJ originates.

  61. i have read the story and followed the comments that have followed, a sorry sight…this is a serious matter, a life and death issue, then am seeing dumb bloggers bringing their political crap, which they don’t even understand. Zambia tulumuchibe…i hope our MOE is doing something about this and following it up closely…that Safari should be quarantined…AIDS, Malaria, Endless Flu, Chorela… poverty, unemployment…the list is endless, are enough for the Zed not another mystery to our puzzle…. Mutuule!!!!

  62. There is need for the authorities to give information of the exact location of this lodge. Gvt need to act fast before more zedians’ lives are lost…only one so far..

  63. * WHAT IS THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT DOING ABOUT THIS NEWS?
    * HAS THERE BEEN ANY DEATH IN ZAMBIAN WITH SIMILAR SIMPTOMS?
    * HAS THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT ISSUED ANY STATEMENTS?

These a lot of flu cases in Zambia lately which I actually think have overgrown Malaria.
It could maybe be a mutation of the Malaria virus going with the global changes, creating a new kind of Malaria.

I hope somebody is taking this very seriously!

  64. more humour pliz…more jokes ..am waiting since this is not a serious issue.had it been serious the ministry of health could haved fed us with proper info unless we have kapalala as ministers.maybe ka mulongoti has polluted them all.

  65. Why arent they talking about the locals being sick??? how do they know it came from Zed? Maybe she had a visitor from SA.Lets wait for the blood results kapena kanayaka zoona

  66. This is bad…i hope this does not result in restrictions on Zambians coming into SA. Besides, you don’t want to hear the comments SAfricans make when they realise you are Zambian at a time like this… But serious, the ministry of health in Z needs to say something coz now everybody has questions, and more questions. Why the silence, this is now an international issue. Save us face!

  67. My fellow Zambians, I am the “Maestro Hhehhehhehhe – LABELLED as a TRIBALIST BY a group of BEMBA-TRIBALISTS (mainly UNDEREDUCATED or Kaponyas) who are small DISTINCT group from the ORIGINAL NORMAL REAL BEMBA PEOPLE of Zambia, just because I am born Tonga and succesful”.
I have now officially stated using the name on my username now.I have done so because LT seems to be a supporer of those who insults or atleast they have pressured him to be on their side.To this end, I am now offically a PF Supporter for Sata to destroy Zambia.I’ll change my username to Maestro Hhehhehhehhe after the October 30, 2008 elections. All POSTS under the name Maestro Hhehhehhehhe from today onwards wont be from me

  68. Mzilikazi I understand your frustration, I feel the very same way. But I like to read the more intelligent blogs which you will find.

  69. This “mysterious” disease bears a striking resemblance to the crimean-congo hemorrhagic fever. The first victim worked for a safari company and my sources say in August she participated in a polo cross tournament that brought in horses from the DRC.Its possible she was bitten by a tick that infected her with the disease. The paramedic who accompanied her to SA may have come in contact with her infected blood or formites.

  70. this issue is serious.some of the comments are sickening and disgusting.if u have nothing constructive to say why not leave matters to those who are seriously alarmed.we have families and friends in zambia.what if its you or someone close to you.some of u need to grow up and think.death is never a laughing matter.think of these peoples relatives.the zambian paramedic who died probably had a wife and kids waiting for him to come home from work.may their souls rest in peace and may their families be comforted.may the governments work hand in hand to find out what exactly is going on. CONCERNED ZAMBIAN CITIZEN

  71. can Zambians in south africa put pressure on our embasy so that they can issue a statement. the number is 012 326 1847

  72. The camp is in Chipata or Mongu. Aka ka muzungu was having sex with chimps. RB and MMD are creating the disease to eliminate Sata and HH.

  75. Fya bufi fye. Takwaba pa Zed. We have had several people comming from abroad and die here after a few days. Do we go about broadcasting that the disease originated from where ever they came from. Fya chabe chabe fye.

  76. Abash South African propaganda! Let the Govt sstep in and clear the air. As Zambians we don want unnecessary restrictions when travelling abroad. The news may also scare tourists!! I think this is a Zimbabwe has colluded with these these South African chimp Doctors!!

  77. ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No# 115 is very truthful go to
Mail&guardian online, it gives more detailed information. Plus there is mention of a possible Tick bite; though the Zambian government must act. We should pray it is taken serious, only Jesus protects Zambia.

  78. If this disease is as infectious and quick to kill as reported, We would have had not less than 10 deaths in two weeks. Its strange that only two people got it from her. Its a mysterious disease indeed.

  79. People this lady worked as a tourist guide, therein is the answer; some outsider brought this whatever into the country. We need to retrace her movements and quickly bring this under control.

  80. THE DISEASE IS CALLED LUPIYA BANDA. People died even in 1991. Drink two tublets of Kaunda’s 11 Medicine every September before October 24th. or We will all die from Lupiya Banda.

  81. It is really a sad development, Its our prayer that the desease does not spread like the HIV virus has, otherwise it will be a disaster.

  82. You #14,you are a ‘BIG Mbuzi'(Goat). So,U are not ashamed of the type of Sports infrastructure we have at the moment?.Stadia is also a matter of health coz pipo will play football and athletics.

  83. Please take this issue serious. There has been a strong flue circulating around, and I only hope that our learned medical doctors are busy doing various tests on the matter. May our merciful creator protect us.

  84. It might b bird flu, pipo the could hurt zambia’s economy cos der r so many non zambians,in particular tourists that visit this site and once they here of such cases they might b forced not to visit zed.ministry of health and government shud do something,in conjunction with the SA officials

  85. This sounds like SARS to me, the fact that those who died probably were in close proximity to the first victim indicate it is airborne… yup SARS is coming to the motherland

  86. JOHANNESBURG, Oct 6 (Reuters) – South African health officials said on Monday they were closely monitoring an unknown disease similar to hemorrhagic fever that has killed three people, but called on the public not to panic.

Melinda Pelser, spokeswoman at Johannesburg’s Morningside Clinic, which treated the three patients, said the disease causes external and internal bleeding and was spread through bodily fluids. But there were no signs it was airborne.

Tests were being carried out on the body of a Morningside hospital cleaner, to see if the death was linked to the disease. South Africa’s Health Department, which issued an alert over the weekend, said: “Blood samples of three of the ca

  87. This is going to make SA restrict Zambians from entering SA. It could be also a strategy to deny Zambians who are flocking to RSA. The disease sounds to me like Ebola originslly from the Congo but we are indeed in close contacts with Monkeys and other wild animals.

  88. “Blood samples of three of the cases are negative for any particular disease, including Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers.”

“At this stage the Department cannot confirm speculations linking these deaths to Ebola or any of the other viral hemorrhagic fevers,” it said in a statement.
“The Department of Health would like to call on South Africans not to panic,” it said.
Dr Frew Benson, the department’s director of communicable diseases, told Talk Radio 702: “Our one concern is that we don’t know what we’re dealing with…the fact that we don’t know what the disease is, is a matter of concern for us.”

  89. IM very concerned about the fact that the nurse who died in a different hospital… so now how many people may have caught it from her???
and this thing about the infection being transmitted via blood does not sound convincing… i mean what did the man who transport the lady mix body fluids with a critically ill woman???? i dont think anyone in the right mind would shag someone coughing and dying all over you????

  90. IT SOUNDS LIKE EBOLA TO ME HOWEVER I DONT THINK ITS FROM ZAMBIA.CHECK WHERE THAT SAFRICAN WOMAN HAD BEEN BEFORE SHE GOT ILL SHE WAS A SAFARI GUIDE HENCE SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTEN IT FROM THE SAFARI

  91. You people its hepatitis E nothing else…its the newest fast killing one which i think the African doctors dont know up to now…….
Ebola kills in 72 hrs but hep E 24 hrs and its air born.

  92. This news is indeed a matter of concern for all of us. Forget the useless comments, because we all hope that the disease does not spread any further.

  93. #34 is right we have one of the best virology and bacteriology lab in the region and have equipment that is even not in S.A courtesy of Japan sponsorship of these labs and our technicians actually are highly trained mainly by the japanes and our own UNZA. so bring them specimens to zed for analysis. dont just right off zambia cause of underutilization of our experts and politicians who want to go to south africa for things that can be sorted out here like mwanga who has gone to morningside for an ear infection at GRZ expense. what a shame.

  94. This disease must be from Zaire (DRC) please deport all Nigerians as well but if we are to deport the Congolese then our FTJ must also be deported. Or should we do a civilised one by asking DRC to import FTJ? May be he can enjoy a honey moon with Regina in that country without roads. After all FTJ is addicted to football and the kabokes play good football. It is sad that the disease came from a toiur operator who was in contact wiith Nigerians. Don’t trust Nigerians – mwalapia!!

  95. I think the SA govt is trying to get at Zambia seeing that we doing so well in the tourism industry… SA being the so called developed country that it is should be able ( with the aid of thecnology) to research and conclude the fact of the matter… SA has excellent public health workers and technics that can help them rule the cause n origin of this disease… personally i think SA is running away from its domestic problems, something is not right about the way this info is being released and translated… it is up to the Zambian govt to investigate this matter… Besides when do people go to this Morningside clinic???? When they are silently dying of AIDS of course!!!!!

  96. Firstly, to all clowns, GROW UP or read & KEEP QUIET.
We’re in an era now where flow of information should be candid, timely & whole.
There’s no information as to where the first victim was before she noticed the first symptoms.. How long she was in contact with the next victims of the disease.. What other symptoms there were & for how long..
Such critical information should be openly shared so as to prevent unnecessary panic that could yield negatively on our economy.
Our tourism industry is only growing so, we need to know the locale of her residence & work place. Someone, inform us!

  97. This sounds like EBOLA VIRUS.The lady was a tour guide so they must establish the areas she visited in the month of her sickness.

  98. I have no idea what some of the posts are about?? Grow up guys/girls
This is not HIV it is not Hep E or any other Hep for that matter.
It is a viral disease of some sorts. Incubation period of anything between 2 and 21 days. The longer the incubation period the more dangerous the disease as it is more difficult to contain.
It displays simialar symptoms to most VHF’s but also simialar to influenza – these symptoms in fact are displayed in a broad range of conditions. There is not yet any need to panic but merely to be vigilant.

  99. It must be ebola. Ebola manifests itself by the victim bleeding through the nose and mouth. Usually, it is caught from the Monkeys of the Congo forest.
Zed’s name should be cleared. We are not the “originators of diseases” but also mere victims.

  100. Its nothing to worry about.Sounds like symptoms of a serious hangover. These whites drink alot when they’re in Zed.

  101. #158……u could be right! symtoms really do sound like ebola. cherrs for taking us back and refreshing our heads.

  102. am back
you should know when to be funny and when its tme to be serious okay.people can we get serious.
the most important thing is to trace the origins of the disease

  103. It’s necessary to lighten up the mood sometimes. Zambia has been a gloomy country since July 2008. If we’re going to die of some strange disease with no name, let’s at least have the last laugh.
No. 165 and 166, stay away from horses, congolese and south africans.
    and for goodness sake lighten.

Why worry about stuff that is way outside your control?????

  105. IT IS NOT CLEAR THAT THE DISEASES ORIGINATED FROM ZAMBIA. LT DON’T REPORT AS IF YOU ARE SOUTH AFRICAN. SA HAS AN AGENDA SO PLEASE PROTECT ZAMBIA’S INTEREST AS WELL. IT IS ALL LOGIC HERE, THE WOMAN WAS HERE SUNDAY FOR A WEDDING AND WENT BACK TO ZAMBIA AND BECOME SICK. REMEMBER SHE LIVES IN ZAMBIA. THUS IT WAS WHEN SHE MOVED OUT OF ZAMBIA THAT IS WHEN SHE BECAME SICK. IF THE OUT BREAK WAS IN ZAMBIA, AM SURE WE WERE ALL GOING TO KNOW. SOUTH AFRICA DOES NOT KNOW ALSO BUT THEY WANT TO RUSH AND BLAME ZAMBIANS. THAT IS WHAT BULLIES DO, THEY DON’T WANT TO ACCEPT THAT THEY DON’T KNOW!!!!! I PRAY FOR THE WOMAN AND PLEASE LET HER AND HER FAMILY HAVE PEACE

  106. This is a sad story, i wish people who are posting comments could realise that there is time for everything, not just to say fun things when things are serious. may the health minister inform the nation what that disease is.It will be helpful to know the causes of that disease so that people can know how to prevent themselves.may the souls of the daparted rest in eternal peace.

  107. These Viro Diseases that are coming up are a result of Biological weapons that are being tested around the world. These Dieases are not Natural, they are timeously being released so that you do not notice were they are coming from.
