Operators won’t reduce fares

Share

The Bus Transport Operators Association has no intention of reducing bus fares for local routes despite a recent reduction in the price of fuel.

Association spokesperson, Ishmail Khanhara, says the operators will maintain the current fares because they have not hiked charges in a long time.

Mr. Khanhara told ZNBC news that a decision not to reduce fares was arrived at during a meeting with officials from the Road Transport and Safety Agency.

He said the bus operators instead negotiated for a three hundred Kwacha increment to enable them sustain their operations.

Mr. Khanhara said most transporters are having difficulties in running their vehicles due to minimal profit margins.

  1. ITS SOUND ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT REQUIRED IN SUCH CASES AND NOT PRIMITIVE CONTROLLED PRICES. THE LIKES OF SATA WOULD FORCE PRICES JUST LIKE IT IS HAPPENING IN ZIMBABWE. IN MODERN ECONOMICS IT CAN NOT HELP. SO PABWATO AND ITS PRIMITIVE POLICIES PANSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BESIDES WE ARE AWARE SATA ALSO OWNS BUSES UNDER GERMINS NAME AND WORKERS GO WITHOUT SALARIES. NO WONDER G.B.M HAS JOINED HIM THIS TIME AROUND. ALEITONAISHOMWINE NO KUMONA UMUBILI EFYO ULEISA. HE CANNOT REDUCE FARES.

  2. Guys who is this Ishmail Khanhara? Not Zambian is he? Not being naive but seriously the man sounds like he is fron Ethiopia or Eritria (sp). Just what has happened to Zsambia?

  3. HH sends shivers in the MMD GRZ RBB campaign team as RBB endor ses HH.
    “He (RBB) also warned the people against voting for a person who would cause

  4. Well in a perfect market, you expect competition which should drive the prices down. But, if all the Kaponyas agree on fixing their prices rather than let competition prevail then we are in trouble.

    This is why the government shouldnt let transport be in private hands of SHU-SHU-SHUs. the government should be involved in the system to make sure that people can have affordable transport.

  5. Its justifiable for operators not to reduce. Fuel prices were increased several times but there was no fare hike.Bravo to free market economy.

  6. WHATEVER, really. I wish the average Zambian like me could afford a car and we do away with these buses. Maybe introduce trains and the like… to bad we have to make do with these rude bus conductors.

  7. its seems most of the bloggers here are all driving,ask some of us who ve been boarding busses since time and memorial,what the operator are saying is not justifible.why is that they find it easy to increase when the fuel goes up,but when fuel prices and reduced it s different issues,awe mwandi they just need to reduce.

  8. Its usually natural to increase than reduces fares/prices.All we need is to work hard so that the effects will not catch up with us.remember the Jacob of the Bible,when Egyptians increased prices of food,he managed to beat the prices!

  9. I plan to start my own bus service and it will bring much competition. Then they will be forced to reduce.

    The fares should be controlled by RTSA or Transport and communication. They should come up with a formula if anyone at the ministry is smart enough to come up with one. If not they should use this:

    P = ((N x L x Sd x Cf x Sav)/ Rno.) x Fdem x Bno.

    where N = Total number of people
    L = Total length covered by all buses
    Sd = Driver’s salary
    Cf = Fuel cost
    Sav = Average No. seats
    Rno.= No. routes
    Bno. = Total number of buses

    Fdem = The demadone factor which will be revealed when the ministry of transport pays.

  10. & somebody is busy boasting that the Govt has reduced fuel yet there is no impact on the economy apart from the prices of goods & services going upwards.
    RB & SAKWIBA how do you explain this?

  11. RB AND SAKWIBA, especially Sakwiba you a normad you dont have a place to stay.First you where with Mazoka,second you where with Sata,third you where with LPM, and now you are with RB which makes you a Graduate political Prostitute. 13. Guys this is fake lets wait after elections you will see. What a foolish strategy at the expense of poor zambians. Are we ever gona develop with these selfish leaders? i think lets give batata a chance 3 years ka and see what he will deliver to us.

  14. Teti babweshe ama bus fares pantu nibakabolala. You see, you cannot have every Jim and Jack doing his own thing.If you leave bus fares to be determined by bus operators, this is what you get. They are an interested party and they want maximum profits even if it means stealing from you and I. Some GRZ wing must regulate these plunderers.

  15. # 23. comrade u r rite. Imagine zambia without Ba SATA. plot one. SATA is in STATE house. NYAMASOYA TAGU< PEPEEE… BASA. O Tongas,bembas, lozis, the rest join NOAH( sata) in the boat.

  16. Imagine if you owned a filling station. Let’s say you filled your underground tanks of 40,000 litres with fuel 1 month ago when prices were high, would you reduce the retail price before you sell this fuel just because the Govt has said so? No. You could end up making losses. A business that makes losses evntually goes bankrupt. You will continue selling at high price for as long as there’s a market willing to pay that price. Don’t only listen to politicians. Also listen to business people who have staked their own money to own and run these business. Politicians only live on taxed from these same businesses.

  17. Ni pabwato.

  18. This is broad daylight theft. I do not think drivers who were cashing K150,000 per day are still doing that. The same operators have obviously increased the ‘cashings’ to may be even K200,000 per day for that category and they defiantly refuse to reduce fares. How selfish!! No wonder most people opt to walk to and from work. They are the fit ones. Its not like the same vima buses are even comfortable – if anything most are an eyesore.
