Zesco United Keep Barclays Cup Defence Hopes Alive

Share

Zesco United matched on to the 2008 Barclays Cup semifinals after defeating Red Arrows 1-0 in their quarterfinal tie played at the Trade Fair Grounds in Ndola today.

A 22nd minute goal from forward Jonah Sakuwaha kept Zesco firmly in the race to successfully defend their Barclays Cup title they won in the competitions inaugural season last year.

They were joined in the semifinals by Green Buffaloes who beat division 1 south promotion chasers Nakambala Leopards 4-2 at the same venue in the earlier kickoff at the same venue on post-match penalties following a 0-0 result after fulltime.

And at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka, lightening struck twice in a period of one week when Lusaka Dynamos beat Zanaco 2-1 in their lunchtime quarterfinal clash.

It was the second time in one week that Dynamos coach Fighton Simukonda had gotten the better of Zanaco whom he coached for two seasons and led to the 2006 league crown before he was fired at Sunset Stadium in July, 2007.

Dynamos beat Zanaco by the same score-line on October 11 also at Woodlands in a BP Top 8 semifinal tie.

Meanwhile today, Josephat Nkhoma put Dynamos ahead with a header in the 2nd minute before Zanaco got some hope thanks to a Bernard Bwalya equalizer in the 43rd minute.

Dynamos secured their semifinal slot on 55 minutes when Zambia national team defender Hichani Himoonde unleashed a rocketing free-kick that hit the woodwork before rattling the back of the net.

And Dynamos were joined by Power Dynamos in the semifinals who beat Kabwe Warriors 2-0 in the second kickoff at the same venue.

Goals from Simon Bwalya in the 49th minute and Luka Lungu 21 minutes before fulltime helped guide Power to their first Barclays Cup semifinal appearance in their debut campaign in the same competition.

The Barclays Cup semifinal final draws will be made later this week by Faz.
