Retirees not happy about increment

Share

Provincial Chairman of Retirees Welfare Bureau of Zambia George Lifuti says the recent 18 percent increment given to the pensioners is a mockery of the century.

Mr. Lifuti complained to ZANIS in an interview today that the money
which the Public Service Pensions Fund (PSPF) has increased to
pensioners is not enough because the cost of living now has become
unbearable.

He said there is need to revise the increment saying K200, 000 would
have been better across the board.

Mr. Lifuti said the retirees are suffering hence the need to address
their suffering instead of frustrating them.

He said the previous system where retirees used to be looked after by
the Ministry of Finance was better because their welfare used to be
looked after every time civil servants’ salaries were hiked.

Mr. Lifuti charged that all SADC regions look after the welfare of
the retirees very well except Zambia.

He has challenged government look into the plight of the retirees
seriously.

Yesterday, the Public Service Pensions Fund Chief Executive, Thomas
Phiri announced the 18% increment for its pensioners and survivors
with effect from September 2008.

Mr. Phiri said the increment which catered for 61, 600 pensioners and
survivors had resulted in the rise of the PSPF monthly pension bill
from K8 billion to K9.5 billion.

The increment now means that the highest paid pensioner will be
getting K2 million instead of K1, 700, 00 and the lowest paid will be
receiving K73, 750, 00 from K62, 500.

PSPF Chief Executive said the increment had been effected in
accordance with section 54 of Public Service Pension Act No 35 of
1996 that mandated PSPF board to review pensions at such intervals as
may be appropriate.

  1. What? you have got to be jocking ba PSPF executive, those retirees are looking after orphans. 70pin is too little. this just goes to show where our priorities are in this nation. Ministers get hefty gratuities and the people who labored to build this nation get the amount your child uses for talktime in a day. Sad!

  2. So sad, you give people 73 pin and then you even have the pride to announce that the pensions for retirees have been increased, shame on you. What difference has the 73 pin brought to the poor retiree. Please try to be realistic and adjust a little further.

  3. That is why Sata makes sense let us give him a chance. Our Ministers and other government officials were busy adjusting their already hefty packages without looking and issues like this. When you are in office serve the people first and you will be a great leader but if you always think of sending your kids to UK and the USA for studies and marrying other peoples wives you will always be thinking of yourself and not the people who ushered you into office.Viva Sata Viva PF Pa bwatooooooooooooooooo!

  4. pipo lets be honest,we need money for our social sectors and infrastrure development.the question shud be, have these retired countrymen been paid their terminal benefits?if yes, then what they have fo now is ok.my fellow civil servants, plan fo yo retirement by engaging in productive ventures esp after getting the terminal packages.i would rather we have a strong social welfair system where disadvantaged senior citizens and ophans are well looked after as it is done in other countries than fo retired citizens to continue crying fo higher perks.sorry but this is my thot,i too have a retired dad pipo, but lets be real about our economic position!!!

  5. the problem with these clowns is that they have never walked in the shoes of the poor. thats why even when the poor complain, these clowns as if not to be outdone, they go on to think of increasing their earnings when people are getting 73pin. how low does one get. this is who God has sent us ba sata. lets not look the other way otherwise this country will be animal farm

  6. Aha,

NCZ workers have been going months without pay. Two months ago they resorted to blocking Mazabuka Kafue Lusaka road to press for their dues.

Alas now last week they were paid 2months salaries because of elections. The company owes them a lot of money. now I urge them to vote out MMD on the 30th to redeem themselves.
MMD through Miyombo Investiments has been inporting fertilizer for zamabia. We all now it is owned by Magande and Maureen Kakubo Mwanawasa. Vote PF NCZ current & retirees u have been taken fora ride since 2001.

  7. this is very bad. my mother told me about this amount and i could not believe her she also mentioned some bank charges guys this is serious. no respect for senior citizens anyway vote wisely mwe bantu.

  8. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Magande and Maureen joint venture but pa zed tikonda dyela. thats she she said her husband wnted Magande to successed him wata dream

  9. Joke indeed! What can one do with 70pin. Meanwhile someone within the same government is getting 100 times the same amount.

  10. Mingeli Palata caught lying about HH on http://www.lusakatimes.com/ ? p = 4932.
    “A N C D A I L Y N E W S B R I E F I N G…FRIDAY 2 DECEMBER 2005
@ ZAMBIA-VOTE-OPPOSITION…LUSAKA 1 December 2005 Sapa-AFP…Bob Sichinga, vice president of the United Party for National
Development (UPND), quit his post after he called for leader
Anderson Mazoka to step down. “I advised Mazoka not to contest his position because of his poor health but he has refused to heed my advise,” Sichinga said.” Meanwhile UNPD Superdelegates elected president HH in August or so of 2006 ahead of the Nov. 2006 election
Please, I am waiting for you response to this, Mingeli Palata. Great men and women apologise for cheating.
