Zambia excels in education

Share

Zambia’s education sector has become the envy of Southern Africa as neighbouring countries now sending their government officials to train in Zambia.

This came to light at the just-ended 2nd meeting of African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Ministers of Education which ended in Brussels Friday.

The meeting heard how Zambia has done a lot to mitigate the gender disparity by passing a policy to enrol all 7-10 year old children in Grade one.

Education Permanent Secretary, Lillian Kapulu said apart from bursaries for vulnerable boys and girls, many others measures had also been instituted.

Earlier, at a Dinner hosted by Zambia’s Ambassador to Belgium, Sheila Siwela, the Education Permanent Secretary told diplomats that education is now almost wholly funded by the Zambian government.

Donors said they are impressed with Zambia’s education policy and are willing to fund the sector even before the next budget allocation.

Mrs. Kapulu told her audience that Zambia’s Fifth National Development Plan is another great admiration.

This is according to a press release by First Secretary to Brussels, Samuel Ngoma.

  1. Every Zambian through reliable news services has a right to learn about the menace that threatens his/her future, home and children and above all peace of the nation. The Post and PF are using the weapon of propaganda and deceit to consolidate or shift influence through manipulation of information and perception. PF is doing this through intimidation, noise making (Kamponyas, taxi and bus drivers and conductors). The Post is consistently ignoring the success stories of HH and RB because covering them would upset the notion they have impacted on peoples minds that Sata is popular through out the country.

  2. Zambian education had been the envy of our Southern African neighbours. That is why when SADDC (fore runner for SADC) was forrmed, Zambia was given tow chair portfolios: Education and Mining. Then came the short man who run down UNZA/CBU, Evelyn Hone, NORTEC and other technical colleges. The question is what are these buffuns in government doing to bring backZambia’s glory in education

  3. This can’t be true. Ask any UNZA or CBU student/lecturer and they will tell you otherwise. Ask any public school student/teacher and they will tell you otherwise. This is madness. We do not have quality education here in Zambia

  4. Ask Botswana and how they have utilised Zambian Teachers to improve Botswana education system. Zambian Teachers (and I) were co-opted into most of the curriculum development for Secondary Schools, and teachers’ colleges. Talk about not being respected in your own village.

  5. I hope they havent doctored the ballot boxes. Pantu cikankalipa drive over 700kms and someone with some overlapping fresh on his face to steal my vote. Cikankalipa sana!

  6. In the first place congratulations to Sheila for your appointment as PS MoE. You know the value of education and you will promote literacy at all levels.
If these statements made by Sheila Siwela and Lillian Kapulu are true, then I believe that we are on the way to recovery all round. Education is the only tool no one steal from us. Community schools should be upgraded and every province deserves two Universites and more.
Visit http://www.UKZambians.com it’s enlightening. Look up ‘Brain drain’ You will be pleased to find many well qualified Zambians who are serving in economically stable countries. Mama Siwela and Lillian, solicit help from these. A way of giving back to Zambia with thanks.

  7. That’s the way to go Zambia!! We can do even better if we choose wisely on 30th Oct. We need consistency and consolidation of educational policies and we should strive to excel to the peak.It is this kind of positive and developmental news that makes one proud of being Zedian.Well done those who are behind this development!! Vote wisely!

  8. Of course donors are happy because it fits in their picture of keeping Zambians ignorant. The achievements and policies you talk about only favours the many private schools where you send your children and not ordinary schools in rural areas, no teachers, text books, resource materials to mention a few things that make teaching almost imposible in Zambia.

  9. Most of the bloggers on LT like ‘maestro hhehehehe’ show that there are anomalies in our education system..hheheheheehe

  10. We all know that education in Zambia is still below the expected standard. A Zambian teacher is still one of the most ill equiped and working in one of the most distressing places. Teachers are now quitting to become Policemen because there is too much month at the end of the salary.

  11. ALL OF YOU ARE BUSSY YAPPING OUT THEIR AND YOU DONT KNOW WHATS HAPPENING? FOR SURE WE ARE IMPROVING AND MOVING FORWARD. ITS NOT A DAYS JOB. ALOT OF SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN IMPROVED AND EXPANED BUT THAT IS NOT ENOUGH WE ARE NOT YET THEIR EVEN. ITS A GOOD ACHIEVEMENT WE MUST APPRECIATE OUR EFFORTS NOT DONORS WE HAVE PUT EDUCATION AS PRIORITY. EDUCATION MUST BE LOOKED BROADLY NOT JUST UNIVERSITY OF BASIC LATE ALONE HIGH SCHOOL.

  12. Nonsense!!! Zambia’s Education system is outdated. The CURICULUM is still the same Kaunda set up after Independence – Jelita & Mulenga. Do not mislead Zambians. Such statements are what makes Zambia remain behind under falls beliefs – complascent. If you want to say that in Africa, come and see with your own eyes the Tertiary institutions in South Africa. In Zambia “they will convert a secondary school into a University” What a joke. University facilities are different. Kaunda converted a college (ZIT)into CBU. Today Zed has not technicians or technologists – Diploma & certificates. The two tertiaries offers Degrees, for the few that can get in.

  13. I also find it hard to believe that we have attained high educational levels in Zambia. I wonder what criteria they used to establish this data. I hope people don’t lean on this news and relax because I feel there’s still a lot to be done in terms of higher education.

  14. if zambia had a good educational base, the elections would be about real life issues and not personalities – lets not kid ourselves. Our curriculum as Pa Zed has said is outdated and completely irreelevant for the real world. why else would there be a flurry of alternative schools offering the zambian sylabus alongside cambridge, just to appease the authorites. my kids are at school at baobab and italian school and what they learn for what is paid is atrocious. as for uni – forget it! they are coming to canada.

  15. Until we have a leardership, like Kaunda, that can take Zambian Education to the next level, the above statement is not true. Zed, a country of 10 Million, has two deteriorating Universities. I was there 14 years ago, today i feel pain to look at what is left of them, outside. i wonder what is left in side. Like everything else Zed is about deterioration. When are we going to build new facilities, while we maintain what we already have. Zambia has no improvements in anything – Education worse. Tourism is a shame. Look at Livingstone, a worn out town, we call a tourist capital. Lusaka is very dirty – streets and markets. Highrise burnt buildings in the skyline. Shame Zed, Shame!

  16. Us based in foreign countries are always faced with a huge dilema. Some of us have married here. Some have friends that wish to accompany us when we visit Zed. Our wives have no choice but to come see where we come from. Everytime we come, we are making excuses about our countries. Or we are blaming someone (Chiluba, for example) for everything that is not working for Zed. We see Zambians, looking hungry, from the boarder right to everywhere in Zed. Zambians, how long will this continue. Politicians lie all the way to State house. We are supposed to be more proud of our own country. Instead every Zambian is busy planing to one day leave the country for greener pastures somewhere else.

  17. PA ZED #19 YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE RUNNING AWAY FROM ZED. US WHO ARE DOING IT A PROGRESSING SO YOU BETTER GET HOME AND MARRY A LOCAL NOT A GREEN PASTURE WIFE? EVEN IN AMERICA THEIR ARE VERY POOR PEOPLE WHO CANT EVEN EAT ONE MEAL A DAY IN MILIONS SO DONT JUST TALK

  18. Consider for as start that in this digital age computer literacy is as vital as knowing how write with a pen,yet we are no where near providing coputers to our children unless they go to a private school. The real issue which donors also echo is that we have not put enough resources were they matter. We buy flushy sports cars for Ministers, PS’s and other govt officials yet to build schools and clinics we require donor help. We have resources to develop but we lack priority and commitment to fight poverty with passion!

  19. Pa Zed,
When were you last in Zambia or L/stone for that matter. We have more than two universities. You must have heard about the ones in Kabwe and Kalulushi. I have been going to Zambia for the lastthree years in a role and it was very pleasing to see the changes taking place from year to year. Not only in tourism related infrastrature but the town as a whole. Always remember Roma was not built in one day. Look at Zambia twenty, ten years ago and look at it now. I know you will agree with me that the country has made progress. Maybe not at a pace that we all would like it to but definately going the right direction. Kudos to the people working hard for this. Keep it up.

  20. Weh dem a talk ’bout? De yute dem full up ya education yet dem nuh own a pay roll! Me rather sell collie weed becah me customers dem pay me fe sure!

  21. Well maybe this is a starting point, let us appreciate it. But still education is not for the majority yet as it was the past 30 years also. Where every parent was forced to bring their children to school or face corpol punishment. Us who went through basic school we real know what it means to be self-reliant because you receive structures that up today can still be seen and are working. Taking 7-10 years old children to school is cardial- the KK govt did that that is why most people got educated. What we have to do away is the examinations carried out at grade 7 instead give chance to everyone to get minimum education, because its at this stage that one discovers their skills and talent.

  22. ctd… More important is provide schools where children can learn skills or discover their talents. Other the hand GRZ and private sector should look in plete of the parents. Most parents cannot afford to pay fees for their children hence children stopping school at a tender age. The starting point should be free education for all whilst measures are being put to transform free education in bruasaries or grants which be repaid back to make reinvestment possible. It was only this way a country can sustain itself. Charity is never done has good. With world economic crisis I doubt if donation will lead our country anyway in near future – if anything doom. Any businessman knows business can…..

  23. ctd.. post better result through reinvestment and strict control of funds. Give incentives to parents so that they be able to pay for education of their children and in the long run this will be repaying and you will see development follow.

  24. Idi Amin of Africa is winning and there is little we can do about it. He wants to build an Airport for people he call “Ba Nyamazai” i.e toilet cleaners. when even ndola and Lusaka airport have hardly three international flights a day. Such lack of understanding will plague zambia during his rule

  25. Pa Zed
Sounds like a strong negative self image. So sorry that you still call yourself a Zambian. Would not be surprised if you have changed your hair, eating styles and nationality if you are so ashamed of your origins and its state of affair. How many times will you run away from your true shadow?

Bwela!! and develop where your umbilical cord is burried.

  26. #15 Dont just speak minus facts ,while i appreciate your concern but i tend to differ on the point that zambia does not have TECHNOLOGIST AND Technicians/certificates holders.
Be informed that we have ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGITS FROM CBU AND WE HAVE MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGIST FROM NORTEC,WE HAVE TECHNICIAN WHO ARE ADVANCED CERTIFICATE HOLDERS FROM NORTEC in different fields namely MECHANICAL,ELECTRICAL,AUTOMOTIVE,HEAVY EQUIPMENT REPARE AND METAL FABRICATION.
All other trades training institutes offer craft certificate in different fields,so my dear dont pait a wrong picture out their

  27. It still doesnt make sense if you eduacate Zambians and cant create employment oprtunities for them and they move to other countries. In other words, we educate Zambians to work in other countries. We supply manpower that improves other countries economies and gain nothing as a country!!!

  28. Late president Mwanawesa, had improved the education sector because he had put education first in zambian childern but am thinking the standards will come down again with who ever will win the coming elections.Zambian studying in Canada.

  29. Allowing un educated pipo like Chiluba and grade 4 failure Sata 2 rule dis country ‘ll always delay development in Zambia, look at da ten waste years in chiluba era . If in 1991 Mwanaawasa ruled even u guyz outside zed would hve not married those green pasture wives of yrs. Encourage yr pipo left here 2 vote 4 educated pipo like HH ok.

  30. It is difficult to believe that in a country where teachers are not recognised for their work. Teachers work under severe hardships, especially those in rural areas. During LPM’s reign we have however seen a drastic improvement in teachers houses in the rural areas, but this needs to continue.

  31. We know that because we are keeping the developed countries running. Go to any developed country, you will find qualified Zambians in key positions.

By the way, i would urge the party which is going to form the next government to promote a university graduate and not a lilayi graduate to head the police as opposed to traditional IGs (Rural Officers).

  32. this is a joke, with mushrooming community schools with untrained teachers,no desks,no administration,in some unfinished bulding in some compound and we call that education.this kids cant even go in the regular educations system.teachers in govt schools nolonger report for work as they teach extra lessons at home to make pocket money as salaries are ever dealyed. if that is what education will be reduced to im afraid we are in trouble.as i write ,their more kids on the street that in the schools so who will lead the nation, who will take over without education, these guys better stop jokes we need education in z now more than ever

  33. did i read bursaries? thats another joke. find out who are getting it the same pipo who can already aford, crazythe same top politician are taking their dependants to UNZA,CBU to make it worse they dont even qualify to be there.i know a guy who was 1 of the best in my sch.he couldnt aford to go unza and didnt get a busary he has been reduced to a carpenter at a market with his 7 points.this guy would be a DR or engineer.i saw him 5 yrs after we left G12,i was in tears what a waste,he had no back up all he said was,you have to know someone its not easy.i worked abit in an indian shop but i coundnt even save enough to study yet undeserving pipo with 30points go on full busary for that matter.

  34. More can still be done…enrolling more kids does not mean that you are offering them the best level of education…its not about the quantity its about the quality.
People should not be allowed in to university if they can not use a P.C….Improve Education in Zambia…do not look to out siders to pat you on the back.

  35. Vote wisely wanzelu alipo bane.

Thank you Central, Copperbelt, Eastern, Luapula, Lusaka, North-western, Southern, Western, and Nothern Provinces. Thank you Zambians. Yes we will. ecHi-ecHi!

Countdown: 3 days 21 hours 55 minutes and we are counting.
The Zambians have decided for the winning Team of HH. Jealous down (Kalijo pansi, Munyono ansi).

  36. 11.Ej, thanks very much. this useless copier has plagiarised my stuff. Sata has become contagious to his PF cadres who are now copying anything they find from Tonga bulls.

  37. #45, Former Secondary Schoola are now called High School is Zambia. These High School offer computer lessons to their pupils.
#44, what did you do or are you doing to help your friend who got 7 points at G12 and could not raise money to get to CBU or UNZA to become a DR? To the best of my knowledge, UNZA school of Natural Sciences take anyone who applied and has results of 11 points and beloww at G12. The GRZ Bursaries Commitee then sponsors such. In fact, now GRZ gives loans instead of the original free bursaries. There only free money is the 25% from the Department of Social Affairs or whatever it is called.

  38. Who is Lilian Kapulu calling boys and girls? If she meant UNZA bound students she is out of order. They are young men and women, or better students.

  39. we have quality education in zambia, let no one despise my country, im in russia now doing my civil engineering because of my teachers in zambia i got quality education in zambia

  40. Sata’s imagebuilders and mouthpiece The POST workforce (reporters) composition:
    By Lambwe Kachali
    Chibaula Silwamba
    Patson Chilemba
    Masuzyo Chakwe
    Sututu Amukena
    Patson Chilemba
    Abigail Chaponda
    Katwishi Bwalya
    Noel Sichalwe
    Sheikh Chifuwe
    Christopher Miti
    Zumani Katasefa
    Allan Mulenga
    George Zulu
    Kabanda Chulu
    Chiwoyu Sinyangwe

Can someone tell me the number of people that are non-Bemba in the above list. Isn’t this tribalism at The POST? Can someone challenge me on my postings on, please, with data?

  41. PF cadres have little understanding of Zambia. They chose to be brainwashed instead of getting to grips with reality. Even now, Some Bwalya – a Bemba man – and the imgebuilders of Sata Sata’s mouthpiece The POST have produced some terrible opinion poll that Sata would win. The interesting point is that the characters that produced this opinion poll are all BEMBA PEOPLE.
Zambias, wake up and see things in a normal perspective. How can 3 Bembas cheat you all. You Zambians are very intelligent and you can do better than being brainwashed. Together, let us build Zambia and vote for real change by endorsing HH on October 30, 2008. Thank you Zambians.

  42. let us be serious before we make certain statements. by doing so you are reducing the effort which was supposed to be put in improving education further.
