The United Party for National Development (UPND) will not petition the election results despite citing a number of electoral malpractices by some parties that participated in the election adding that the petition is a waste of time.
Party president Hakainde Hichilema says the party will now concentrate on providing alternative leadership by formulating policies that can help address challenges the country is faced with.
Mr. Hichilema said his party will also continue to prepare for the 2011 presidential and parliamentary elections.
He described the just-ended presidential polls as the most competitive and exciting elections the country has ever had.
Mr. Hichilima has also thanked Zambians for voting peacefully in the tightly contested polls in which MMD’s presidential candidate Rupiah Banda emerged winner.
He has however expressed concern about the low voter turn out which was attributed to voter apathy among registered voters.
Speaking during a media briefing the opposition party leader also commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for facilitating the October 30 polls professionally despite the pressure on the commission.
He has however called upon government to consider funding ECZ to enable the commission continue carrying out voter registration throughout the country.
He said this will help increase voter turn out once the country is holding an election and ensure a majority vote.
And Mr. Hichilema has disclosed that his party has written to the ECZ on alleged malpractices in the just-ended presidential by election.
And UPND vice president Richard Kapita said the just ended presidential elections provided an opportunity for the party to market its presidential candidate for the 2011 polls.
He said the party has resolved maintain the candidature of Mr. Hichilema because he has become more popular in the country.

Who is the PF candidate for 2011 and when is your convention?
The difference between HH and SATA is that HH knows democracy. He knows that elections result into loser(s) and a winner. SATA does not know that because he does not practice elections in his party, so he can’t know what has happened to him when he is told you have lost.
RB deserves to be congratulated. The man is sober. After the post had done all they did as a leader he simply thanks them for helping to make the name ‘Rupiah’ a household name. He says activities of campaign are a thing of the past, now we go to work. That is a leader!

Next steps for HH:
1) Organise a Convention before 2011 elections. This way, you will shake off the tribal tag that Fred Mmembe and his propaganda newspaper put on you.
2) Continue campaigning in rural areas. In most cases, you were coming out second to RB, and this is a good sign. In some cases, Sata was getting less votes than miyanda.
3) Do not accept a position in the MMD govt. You are your own man.
4) Do not ever think of forming a pact with PF, no matter how much people say you are dividing the opposition. Why cant SATA join you and support for the presidency? He will only use you and dump.

It is sad that some people dont understand democracy. How can you say RB won by rural vote so he must become a rural president? In democracy when you have majority vote it does not who voted you become ruler of all. I believe people saying that come from parties that hold no elections so it is not easy for them to undersatnd the concept of elections. Those who are condeming ECZ and talking of rigging seem to be a number, but I am shocked that none of them has raised any single reason why they believe the elections were rigged. Whether or not HH was “the only” Tonga there is insignificant if #150s point is accurate. The intention was to elect a Tonga, period. I am glad HH competed and was selected due to his credentials. People I have spoken to have no issue with his selection based on academic or career “credentials”, it is the fact that one of those required credentials was his tribe.

The fact is that I am Tonga and a lot of brainwashed Bemba-Tribalists think that anyone who supports president HH and the mighty UPND is a Tonga person. Now, why must I – a Tonga person – hide – and cheat in the process – my tribe just because I want HH and the UPND to appear as if they have support from elsewhere. How many Tonga people support RBB and the MMD because odf their belief that RBB is best? In case you do not know, VJ Mwaanga my relative (I am Mugungulu Hamwaambwa Mwaanga from Chief Mapanza in Choma) and Munkombwe are examples. I hope this is enough.

VJ Mwanga & Munkombwe are not sane Tongas! Mazoka lost just because of the ugliness of VJ & I’ve not respect for this Tonga! I supported Mazoka as he was a man who could have taken us to the next level, but not this HH you seem to be so much obssessed with!
Infact, UPND should bring in a new leader from another tribe, then the paty will move forward! It would have been better that UPND and PF came together under the leadership of let’s say Prof. Chirwa, but unfortunately Chirwa is in MMD and truth is that they frustrate him there! HH and Chirwa have the vision in modern times, but HH has little chance based on what the voting pattern was!
If people will always think that the TOP position in UPND should go to Tongas, then it’ll always be seen as a tribal Party! If you believe in the UPND’s manifesto you are very welcome to join us, but if you do not agree with our (UPND’s) manifesto and hence the UPND Constitution then please find some other party to support and do not delay the UPND’s progress.
Sata’s PF is welcome to join the UPND as long as they accept to let the learned UPND president HH lead – and this is where it ends for we can not be led by a flip-flopper PERIOD.
PF and UPND may be different in many ways, but in others they are similar. Sata is a self appointed leader in PF. He was not democratically elected to be PF president. HH was handpicked, by those with power and influence in UPND, to be UPND president. The methods may be different but the result is the same. People can see that.
Iam a very open minded personal and am not blind folded by these democratic processes. The other trouble is that the advisers to theses politicians are useless as they can’t see beyond the nose. These are the realities!

Otherwise, my advice to you and Sata is that let Sata write grade 7 exams next year in 2009, then Grade 9 exams in 2010 and later try Grade 12 exams in 2011 or after. Then let Sata come and join the UPND in a possible PACT in 2016. By that time, we can risk him for Zambian President even if he will still harbour DICTATORIAL tendencies that die hard for someone said “old habit never die”.

The same can be said about Southern Province not voting for Sata. Is it safe to say it was only the Tongas in Southern province who are tribal? PF had a much better and broader showing than UPND. But the fact remains that they are both regional parties. The only difference is the degree to which they are regional.

As long as king cobra continues being surrounded with arrogance, with his supportrs calling other tribal and insulting them, Sata will never rule. Pride comes before a fall. Those insulted will never vote for him. Come another better person whether from c/belt, people countrywide will vote for him. So stop calling names those who never voted king cobra. We had 4 parties contesting for crying out loud. If people in UPND feel that the only way is to go it alone then so be it, it is their money and manpower. If PF thinks it can go it alone then so be it, it is their wasted money and manpower. Unless one of the opposition parties can organize itself broadly at the grassroots level, its a waste of time contesting elections. Whether you love or hate the MMD, they have a broader reach.
