HH’s UPND denies PF pact reports

The UPND has dispelled media reports suggesting that the party is pondering on an electoral pact with the Patriotic Front (PF).

Party Secretary General, Tiens Kahenya, said in a statement to ZNBC that his party is not contemplating entering into a pact with any political party.

Mr. Kkahenya said UPND is currently conducting a postmortem of the last presidential election.

He said the party is also focusing on the 2011 tripartite elections.

Mr. Kahenya however, said his party will always remain committed to genuine proposals for alliances.

If UPND had just maintained level Mazoka left it at, MMD would not be in state house today.   25. The parties should concentrate on being genuine advocates for development. I don’t really think that a pact would work. My main reason for saying this is that none of the leading parties were formed with an overwhelming desire to serve our country. Look back at the history of the main opposition parties and you will notice that they have one thing in common. Their formation was spearheaded by one main exponent who proceeded to dominate them. Change will only come to Zambia when we have parties which are dominated by ideas and policies. Many Zambians have lost interest in politics as evidenced by the apathy in the last elections. We cannot afford such indifference.

You need to have a common ideology, philosophy to unite the ticket. All those desperately calling for HH to unite with Sata seem to miss this simple point. Quite okay they can form a pact and win. But after the win anything can happen if there is no underlying common ground. Its very easy for Sata to do a ‘ULP’ to UPND after he wins the election.   54. Political pacts should be based on something tangible not for the sole purpose of wining the presidency. Such alliances would amount to politics of greed. It is unfortunate that Zambian political parties are neither leftist, rightist, etc. one would stop to wonder why our founding fathers found it prudent to have a one party system of government. Our political parties have the same mantra “prosperity for all”, Levy tried to take there, chiluba has yet to be judged which direction we were heading.

  86. UPND and HH can not win elections alone without a pact PF has an advantage if they play their Mathematics well. All what PF need to do is field credible and popular candidates in all 150 constituencies for parliamentary and local government elections, they are likely to win in at least 80 constituencies and form a Government.   94. No one can form a pact with PF with Sata as leader. UPND can form a pact with a flexible political party. The problem is the differences in policies with PF and the Sata’s understanding of issues is a problem. Bembas and kaponyas are just voting for Sata. That is a problem so it is better for MMD to continue than having Sata and Fred Membe. Looking at Sata’s appetite to lead Zambia, he is not ready to give up power in his party.

    The PACT will harm the opposition. Why do I say this? Because of the way the voting pattern was. The pattern showed that the electorate is inclined to regional affiliation, not issue base. Now reguional inclination is a delicate issue, it does not favour PACTS because pacts are normally issue based but regional inclination is not issue based; but it is ethinic based. I hope you follow this reality. Having said this let me say the if their was any pact and it picked SATA as president the pact would lose most of southerners to MMD.In the same way if the pact picked HH, most of the northerners would be lost to MMD.

  166. Bembas are extremely tribal. There is no other reason they voted for Sata other than being of the same tribe. Check this, Sata won only in areas where there is high concentration of Bembas. Even in Northern Province, areas of Namwangas, Mambwes, Tumbukas and Lungus did not vote for him. As for HH, you can’t blame Tongas, Lundas,Luvales and Lozis for voting for him, he definitely had/has the best credentials.

    HH is better off forming an aliance with the MMD than PF Bemba tribalists.

When z moves 3 points, what happens to the seesaw cannot be determined, because your information is not sufficient. First you must understand that x, y are not constants. So while z moves 3 points x and y are equally varying all the time. Unless we have been told how x and y have varied, we cannot determine what effect moving the cg will have on the equillibrium. This is why the PACT makes it difficult to predict the out come in terms of support for the pact in relation to individual parties.

    MMD = Zamtel
    PF = Zain/Celtel
    UPND = MTN/Telecel.

    Zamtel is limping although it has the capability to be the best. Zain has a lot of problems with its network, but it is good at marketing. MTN is the best network, but only appeals to the rich and learned.

    Thus, MTN has to embark on a powerful marketing campaign including donations to the Zambain Society like the Nangoma Ambulance UPND is alleged to have given to the Health Centre there.

That is how come, my quest to have more intelligent talks with probably president HH failed to kickstart.     I think the problem is that a party needs two things:

    1) A manifesto and policy that most people want to see enacted and
    2) A party – you need a ground game, to bring out votes, protect the voting process and to get the message out.

    This is what is wrong with politics today – all parties have only one, not the other. AfC, CDP, and all the small parties only have good manifestos. Only the MMD, PF and UPND have actual members on the ground in every province.

    Markets don’t decide, supply and demand do. And there are all kinds of restrictions on supply and demand that have nothing to do with the market itself. We only have 20% of arable land under cultivation – that massively reduced the supply of food and drives prices higher. Only 3% of arable land is under full year irrigation – the same thing. There is 70% official unemployment, which reduces demand by making money unavailable.

    Free market theory is over, by the way. 🙂 It is time for some works programmes.

    UPND was bigger party under Mazoka.They had MP’s in Western,North Western,Lusaka,Central,1 in Nothern Province and Southern Province.Under HH the party has reduced national appeal and only has MP’s in Southern Province.You can’t run away from reality my friend.HH has to change his approach to politics.

    I’m not saying he should form a pact with Sata.HH and Sata are totally different in their political views.I agree with most of your views about Sata.

    E.G
    1.Sata was voted as PF president by who?
    2.HH was voted at a convetion….UPND members from nine provinces.
    3.Sata’s style of leadership is that of revenge,vindictiveness,insults
    4.HH brings to the political areana issue based politics.
    5.Each time HH speaks,PF cardres feel uneasy and call him names.

Am one of those people who sacrificed my vote for sata because I just wante to remove MMD from power although HH was my favouriite.Well, both Sata & HH have lost in 2008…What bext?

    The UPND still enjoys good support in all the Provinces you mentioned but one – Northern Province. In fact you are totally wrong or ill-informed about your ‘Under HH the party has reduced national appeal and only has MP’s in Southern Province.’ Just check your facts for I don’t want to expose the ignorance you exposed about yourself here.

As long as the opposition is divided, MMD will continue being in power.Take a good look at the presidential results,apart from the 1991 elections,the opposition wins but because the votes are shared the oppostion loses. My advise to opposition party leaders is that consider merging, go to a convetion, let the people vote for a number of potential candidates who must debate and the best one takes the
    Presidency. It is not only about what someone owns but also what that person can offer to the people of Zambia.Obama convinced the people of the USA that he is capable of being a leader,that is why he got the position.Lets get out of the mediocre African politics of self appointments

  562. UPND can only go for a pact if PF can go for a convention and elect a leader. How can PF exercise democracy if their leader was not democraticaly elected. SATA OWNS PF. THAT’S WRONG.
    If a pact was to materialise, PF and UPND should be willing to go for a convention where the two parties will elect a leader for the pact. There is nothing like, ‘let me rule for 3 years then I’ll surrender power to you’ like talking to an infant.

    B. Wrong advises from those chaps[TOHGAS] to HH about merging with PF.
    Ba HH, brother remove that pride in you only then you shall excell in these politics. You shud have been side by side with PF to remove this cruel MMD, saying that ba PF was to be head and you ba HH vice then all the pipo country wide were going to be behind you 2011.     If HH enjoys good support in those provinces mentioned as Mazoka did,then why did he come a distant 3rd in the recent presidential elections.He only managed to get about half of the votes RB and MCS got respectively.
    The Late Anderson Mazoka amassed almost double the number of voters HH won in those same provinces you mentioned when he stood as president.So where has the popular vote that UPND had gone to?.If your facts suggest otherwise then bring them on.
    The simple fact is that HH has virtually no national popularity and appeal.

  568. There is no point trying to get oil and water to mix. People are wasting their time trying to convince these two individuals to put selfishness aside and find a common ground (it appears that they have no points of commonality). I am sure both of them realise that a divided opposition will always lead to an MMMD victory. They have seen the election result percentages just like we have. Let them both do what they “believe” is in their best interest. 2011 should be a repeat unless something dramatic happens.
