Deputy Speaker orders Govt to break the silence on rising prices

Share

DEPUTY Speaker of the National Assembly Mutale Nalumango has ordered the Government to explain the escalating prices of mealie meal and why prices of fuel have remained static when global oil prices are falling.

Ms Nalumango gave the directive in Parliament yesterday after Pemba Member of Parliament David Matongo (UPND) raised a point of order asking if it was right for the Government to remain mute in the face of the escalating prices of mealie meal.

Mr Matongo also wondered why the pump price of fuel in Zambia had remained the same when the global crude oil prices were falling.

The deputy speaker said that the point of order raised by Mr Matongo was important and therefore deserved an explanation from the Government.

“The relevant ministries should issue statements either this week or early next week. These are issues of national importance and therefore the point is relevant,” Mrs Nalumango said.

  1. Please let them explain!I only hope you won;t be fired for asking to many questions ka?!Hey and what up with the President?! he seems to be very quiet and doing a lot in his own mind!

  2. This is the debates are supossed to be not walkout and being petty.

Surely the nation need to know y prices of the said commodities are ever rising and NYAMA SOYA has to tell the nation the answer him coz he promised to reduce all this once elected.

  3. spectator welcome we missed yo arguements

am sure u r impressed by the way UPND dabetes, issue based not walkouts, organising demos, undressing, beating up yo potential voters for 2011,etc,etc

  4. So people fell for MMD’s desparate measures to win the election!!! Now they will see how hunger and uselessness in economy when you put it to minds which have no substance. Wapya!

  5. GRZ should realise that the effects of the global financial recession can not be ignored since we have opted to mange our econnomy on capitlist terms. The pipo have the right to know why their precious mealie meal is becoming unaffordable.
As an adherent of strategic planming, I believe this mess could have been avoided if our well informed economistsput aside politics and took a stand to inform the nation of the effects of the current global financial crises on our ill managed state.

  6. Bwezani Banda is still sleeping. EVery time he wakes up and have a shower and eats, he goes back to sleep. He will ever sleep till 2011 thats when he will wake up to dish out mealie meal and sugar again to his home land.

SLEEPING SICKNESS, NO SHOW OF WORK UP TO NOW. SHAME

  7. Instead of talking day in and out about PF kaponylism or UPND regionalism, brains storming on the global finacila crisis should be at the fore to map out whatever plans that can be utlised to mitigate the impact on the already suffering Zambians. my simple analysis shows that we are more likely to see a 1986 ethiopian situation in in zed if the matter is meddled with politics and unreasonale speculations by politicians

  8. Good point mutale, you are now working.
    let GRZ also explain:
why they arrested Fr Frank Bwalya?
why they have resumed useless load shedding after 30th November?

  9. 7. Man kunde

Thankyou very much…any who anybody could have raised the issue, the fact that it was raised by a UPND MP does not make it special neither would it have been special had it come from PF…thats is what we voted them for to speak for us…

  10. UPND MP, a pat on the back for raising issues that really affect the people. It is best to raise issues than to walk away from issues.

  11. The price of fuel will not decrease until the goverment buys its next shipment.
They purchase approx one month supply….everyone knows that and simply they cant drop the price and lose money on every litre now.

wait till the next consignment of oil….then it will be cheaper.
Gone down by 20 cents(800Kwacha) a litre here in Australia in the last week alone.

  12. Reasonable thinking Mr Matongo. lets tackle issues now. this is post election period we had enough time to articulate on elections. lets not face backwards. Lets find solutions to improve the situation

  13. WAIT THE GVT WILL GIVE YOU THE PROPER EXPLANATION……….DO NOT PANIC COZ THE ECONOMY ITS NOT A ONE DAY THING ,,,,ITS A PROCESS..EVEN IF THE FUEL PRICES DROP ON THE WORLD MARKET, ITS NOT OVERNIGHT FOR THE RELEVANT MINISTRY TO DO THE ADJUSTMENTS….. PEOPLE GROW UP AND LEARN TO APPRICIATE EFFORTS….RB WILL DO A GOOD JOB FOR MOTHER ZAMBIA THAN THE COBRA WOULD HAVE DONE…SATA AND YOUR BOYS SHOULD LEARN THINGS………..

  14. I hope when RB shows up in public or rather makes his first move as president, it will be something radical, history making, jaw dropping and something we shall look back and say “that is the move that changed the course of our country” and our children will study it in schools. I really hope so. I hope he is crafting something special in his silence. Something Zambia has never seen. It really better be. Fingers crossed, we are watching you RB. I truly hope you have not gone from Soya to Sour as some people are saying.

RB, we await your first act as president.

  15. Madam D/speaker has spoken sense for the first time. Lets see what happens next. Its interesting to note that even the big mouthed Nawakwi and Sakie who shamelessly supported the MMD have remained mute over the matter.

  16. I support nalumango( deputy spker)for coming out so zambian. These are the brains we want in this country. Gents MMD have overstayed in power and we cant be forcing or begging them to reduce prices of commodities when they know they shud do that for zambian pipo.

We are tired of thez chaps, we need change ,a goverment that shud not be reminded to make decisions of a critical nature. Oil as today is between $50 and $55 per barrel on the world market. But the chaps are still stealing from zambians and it takes the deputy speaker of the national assembly to advise them. Where is the president by the way ?

  17. Honestly, salaries are rarely increased but why should the price of mealie shoot this high? are we not growing enough? or do we need to call back our former colonial master to come and rule us again. Aicona man/ People lets put our heads together and fight this or else we are heading to the Ethiopia/ Somalian situation.

  18. Ms Nalumango is a women iam sure she knows wat it feels to buy a 25kg that will only last 5 days for as much as K80,000/- come on/

  19. RB is the worst President of Zambia I’ve known when judged by time taken to form a Cabinet. All of KK, Kafupi and LPM would form Cabinet within two days after the inauguration.

By the way guys KK was 40, Kafupi 49 and LPM 52 when they became Presidents. Is it age that has dulled RB such that coz of it he’s finding it extremely difficult to come up with a Cabinet. And not even a word from him for one week now.

  20. Nalumango is right to make that demand because as citizenery we need to understand what is happening. This also removes uncertainties created in our communities. It also helps us no either know or predict where we are going.

  21. #29

Take it easy,RB in under no obligation to came up with cabinet if hez confortable with what he has at the moment.Don’t 4get that hez MMD and thats cabinet and party in power. He promised to carry LPM’S vision and that vision is carried out by cabinet.

  22. Before elections mmd /grz were telling us that fra had surplus maize. What has happened to this invisible maize? And why is KK quiet? Before elections he was too vocal!!!!

  23. pipo without VISION just follow the wind…kwalola mwela eko baya.
RB HAS NO VISION OF HIS OWN…..SO HAS NO CHOICE BUT FOLLOW THE WIND..GARBAGE IN GARBAGE OUT…….TETA.

a person with the vision would hv by now started activating things…like OBAMA VISION

  24. #33 what are you saying all i see is ……….., its been 11 days or so since RB went into office, has he said or done anything? NO! but its also too quick to write off the fellow,SATA promised 90days……

  25. we are in for it,i went to buy boom only to find that its going at K4000,zambia is in a serious crisis, nyama soya’s silence is not gonna help at all.let them speak out on whta they are going to do about this crisis.next is fuel watch this space

  26. So is this what all of you mmd supporters voted for, a silent and unproductive government that has no iniciative what so ever. The people are suffering and no one seems to have an answer. yes it might be too soon to comment but what happened to all the pre-election promises and why is there no government response not even a verbal one.

  27. I am getting worried by RB quiteness. We voted for him, but it seems he is still sleeping! Let him wake up and address this issue head on!

  28. Load shedding mwe bantu sure, few weeks before election Zesco announced that loading shedding wud be reduced following the repaired transformer at kariba, now we are back to square 1 everyday.
this is our land we cannot not run to anywhere else, can something be done abt this issue pliz

  29. BA #35 BA NZELU, ATLEAST HE WOULD HAVE ADDRESSED THE NATION REGARDS THE ISSUES AT HAND, WHY HAS RB DECIDED TO BE QUIET, ALL WE HEAR IS HE HAS CANCELLED HIS TRIPS. IN FEAR OF WHAT. LET HIM WAKE UP.

  30. Economists on this blog, please explain to us why the prices are high or getting high. Us bloggers dont need to wait for politicians to tell us.

    1) Mealie meal prices – are the input costs going up e.g maize prices, transport. What actually goes into producing M/meal?
    2) Fuel prices – I guese Indeni is still processing old crude oil feedstock, bought when oil prices were high. One consignment normally takes 3 months. Now remember Indeni had shut down for maintenance. So lower prices may take long to come.
    3) Kwacha depreciation – I expect imports are now more expensive. ZMK has gained but not sufficiently.
4 Credit crunch – likely that cost of borrowing has gone up. Check millers.

  31. pity for my people home.some of us with brains could have stayed but since we did not have money and the crowd to support us we had to leave.cry my beloved country!

  32. LT: Breaking news: VJ is the new Chief Whip. Cat of nine lives? Dejavu!! is anyone out there stillin doubt that Banda is taking the country backwards, and not forward? How can he possibly claim to continue Mwanawasa’s legacy when he is surrounding himself with everyone Mwanawasa had dismissed!!

  33. When people vote because of fear this is the result. Kaponyas in Kitwe are now in charge. Kapokolas, hungry as they are, cannot fight the running battles with young nergetic kaponyas. Feed the Police and peace shall prevail. I would hate to see our peaceful country Zambai become like those we have seen around us; Kenya and Zimbabwe. Let us not take peace for granted. Our leaders should know by now that in democractic nation, people’s views must be left alone. In America, recently, Obama was being associated with terrorist; what did he do? he educated the people. Say the truth and not send the Police. Come RB, you can do better than this. If in doubt, appoint me as your Vice President!
