Former Finance Minister, Ngandu Magande,has pledged to assist the country come up with measures to cushion the economy against the impact of the global finacial crunch.
Mr. Magande who is also Chilanga Member of Parliament says he is obliged to come to the aid of the country in this hour of need under the global financial turmoil.
He said this in a statement to ZNBC news in Lusaka.
The Former Finance Minister also dismissed reports that he is about to leave Zambia to take up a position at an international financial organisation abroad.
Mr. Magande holds the record of having been the longest serving Finance Minister in Zambia.
He was dropped from government on November 14.

Back in the 1970s, the Kwacha was 1 to 1 US dollar. In 1991 when the MMD took over, it was 113 to 1 US dollar. Today, after neoliberalism, privatisation and the handover of the mines, it is 4800 to 1 US dollar.
To try and create ‘sound money’ through encouraging low inflation has obviously done nothing to prop up the Kwacha against foreign currencies.
Maybe the government should restrict the amount of cash in circulation by tying it to it’s copper reserves. The government could mine copper on a cost only basis and create large reserves to peg the Kwacha on.
If RB wanted to show maturity, and also help the MMD stay intact with dignity, he should have strategically appointed Magande as his vice president. In life, the person you disagree most should be your advisor. look at Obama did…his vice president is one of his strongest critics. Thats the way to develop. Not the african style where anybody you disagree with should be fired. This why it is still 1808 instead od 2008 in most african countries.

Dr Musokotwane is well qualified and a well experienced academicain. Magande one hand is equally qualified and highly experienced practitioner. Both men have their own merits but given the prevailing economic challenges world wide and in the country, RB would have done well to maintain Magande at this crucial hour. Unfortunately, I dont seem to appreciate the way RB makes decisions e.g. Fires a seasoned IG without replacement; Fires his aides without replacemnt; makes firts state visit to Nigerian (symbolic); mealie and dertiliser prices are skyrocking under his nose despite his campaign commitments? All this is happening in less than 3monts of his presidency. I am worried where the country will be in 6 months!!

I see that people like Magande. He might have been a good Finance Minister. But he is not the President. The President could have dropped him that he might not be loyal. In fact, Magande is not the only person who can be Finance Minister in Zambia. So, if he wants to help, every Zambian can also help.
Is the current Finance minister failing for Magande to offer help or is he missing the perks of the job already? He should keep a low profile if he wants to come back and contest the next elections.
I think Magande should know his limits because he is just going to irritate RB and his cabinet because they will think he assumes they have failed. He is talking as if he is in opoosition. Some people are runnning away from the fact and Magande knows what he is talking about. When he was a finance minister , the kwacha appreciated when copper selling price was low. Musokotwane can be more educated than Magande but the application is different, we have seen than happening practically. It is the very reason why LPM wanted to him to succed the position of the president. RB was ill advised by the likes of Mulongoti,Tetamashimba,Chitala etc to sack Magande because he is a threat to RB. Had Magande won, those crooks mentioned above were not going to have it easy. Former fisrt lady Maurine knew about this and she mentioned it.

The economic melt down that Zambia is begining to suffer from is as a result of bad policies of Magade and Mwanawasa. They thought that the copper prices will continue raising forever. You have to understand that not all people with degrees, doctorates and phd are practical. They say some people wents to school but are not educated, they studied to pass exams but to ask about what they learnt in school they cannot say anything. There also those who went to school and are educated and at the sametime practical. So do not expect whoever has a degree or phd as intelligent in doing things or can deliver. It’s very common in our societies where we go into certain proffesions just because you have nothing to do. Given the history between the two, it would have surprised me if RB had kept Magande on. That is just politics. It is probably more convenient for RB to have Magande out of the inner circle. I think that it would have been asking too much for RB to let Magande stay. Also he has to stamp his own authority on the party and the country whilst still keeping LPM’s legacy alive.

I was surprised Magande was dropped as he played a major role in the past. Anyway, whatever we think of the man, at least he is not dwelling on what has happened. Whatever his motives for offering his services, are best known to himself. Let us take things in a positive manner and not just start speculating. There are many Zambian’s out there with expertise in many areas who should be encouraged and given an opportunity to pool their knowledge to help develop the country. Let us appreciate any assistance from our own people.

Strange man this Magande. He is the same person when asked how Zambia would be affected by the Global Financial crisis responded by saying Zambia would not be affected. If he’s so brilliant, how could he not know that Zambia is not insulated from the world economy. The inflation rate may have been low when Magande was around but just because they correlate does not mean one caused the other. Correlation does not equal causation. [-x
The low inflation rate is as a result of the good policies carried out by The Bank of Zambia governor (Fudanga). He did well to control inflation at the time it was low. Unfortunately in Zambia, food makes up a huge percentage of our inflation rate. The rise in food prices has caused our inflation to reach in the double digits once again and if it is not tackled, our inflation might sparrow further out of control. #-o

Magande or no Magande at MoFNP the world is in recession. Small economies like Zambia who depend on exports of copper to China are certainly being hit. China cannot import much copper and cobalt from Zambia because they cannot sell their finished products to Europe and the US.
Somehow some of you bloggers think that Magande would have changed this scenario. Impossible! What we need now is realistic economics by both Situmbeko Musokotwane and Caleb Fundanga. Period! Zambia is just full of pipo who:-@. The people in gov’t don’t %-( to ideas and good suggestions that is why our economy is going down fast. During the hey days in the 1970s our economy was dependant on mining, when the prices of copper went down, our economy went with it too. Why has the gov’t done the same thing this time around? Zambia should change direction and make agriculture and tourism our number one foreign exchange generator. Mining is good but it should not be our only source of foreign exchange. The gov’t must stop depending on foreign investors when it comes to agri business because a 1 million small scale farmers can keep almost half of the population in work.:(|)
Surprise! Magande is still part of MMD Team so he can still contribute through that avenue or the EAZ (Economic Association of Zambia). Besides, Magande is a personal friend to the Current Finance Minister so he can offer his serve. He should specify how he want to offer his service-is it as a Consultant or “Special Advisor” to somebody? The President, be it RB or Obama, has the privilege of appointing his own Minister/Advisors. Magande had his chance it’s now Dr. SM’s chance and tomorrow it will be somebody else. We suported Magande and he did a good job; let’s suport the Dr.SM to do a better job. Remember that our problems are partly global as well as domestic. We all have a part to play.

The first time Magande contested for a seat was in 2006 and it was even a disputed win in court with a Mr Moono. Magande is the same as Musokotwane they are not politicians they just lender a service to the zambian people. Let us be like Americans who are able to bury their differences for the sake of their nation. Magande’s move is right we have to move together is a nation when there is a crisis. People who mean well will be scared to lender any help because everyone thinks you are looking for a job.
