FRA reduces price of maize

Share

The Food Reserve Agency -FRA- has reduced the price of a fifty kilogram bag of maize from K63,000 to K55,000.

FRA Board Chairperson, Costain Chilala, announced the price reduction in a statement to ZNBC news in Lusaka on Wednesday.

Mr. Chilala said the FRA board took the decision in consultation with the government.

He explained that the decision has been taken in view of the escalating mealie meal prices in the country.

He said the FRA will buy available maize from the local market and import adequate stocks for local consumption.

Government is making serious efforts to reduce the prices of mealie meal which have increased sharply in the last few months.

Meanwhile, Choma District Commissioner, Laiven Apuleni, has directed the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to suspend the on-going sale of maize, saying the exercise is not benefiting the intended starving rural communities.

Mr Apuleni issued the directive in Choma yesterday when he summoned officials from the Choma District Cooperative Union mandated to sale the maize on behalf of FRA.

The DC said he is disappointed to learn that the FRA is selling maize within the town instead of delivering the commodity to rural areas.

Mr Apuleni said the district administration requested the FRA to offload some maize specifically to cushion the serious effects of hunger in rural communities.

He wondered how people from rural areas would be expected to travel to town to buy the maize when they do not have the capacity to meet transport costs due to hunger stalking the area.

He stated that the decision by the FRA to sell the maize within the town defeats the purpose as unscrupulous businessmen in the township will take advantage of the exercise to buy the commodity in huge quantities which they will later re-sell at inflated prices.

He said it is better for the FRA to suspend the current sale of maize if the agency maintains that it will not authorize the district cooperative union to carry out the exercise in rural communities.

Mr Apuleni said he would inform all the five chiefs about the development especially that the district administration is under intense pressure from the traditional leaders over the delayed delivery of maize.

He said management at the FRA should be humane enough and understand the suffering of rural people who are going without food.

The FRA has released 2,000 by 50 kilogramme bags of maize for sale at K63,000 per bag.

  18. WARSAW (Reuters) – A Polish man got the shock of his life when he visited a brothel and spotted his wife among the establishment’s employees.

Polish tabloid Super Express said the woman had been making some extra money on the side while telling her husband she worked at a store in a nearby town.

“I was dumfounded. I thought I was dreaming,” the husband told the newspaper on Wednesday.

The couple, married for 14 years, are now divorcing, the newspaper reported.

  26. i wonder how many of us have taken time to consider the wise words of Choma DC. This is just political to surpress urban dwellers at the expense of rural guys. since these people are easy to manipulate. what a govt. its not fair to treat silent voices in this way. we need fair treatment. why is it that the rural are always suffering. be it in elections they are used to manipulate the system. in food crisis they are the victims shame. RB. in solwezi the price of maize is over k70,000.00. please please please consider the voiceless.

  29. Lowering the price of mealie-meal, without increasing actual production of maize, is just buying time. We have to start getting more land under cultivation FAST.

THERE IS NO POINT TO BUYING TIME, UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO USE THAT TIME TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

We need to get far more people back on the land, farming at least their own food and having enough land to create surpluses. We also need to switch to biofuels (diesel engines are capable to use biofuels right now) to save foreign exchange. We need to reduce the size of the central government and switch to service delivery through local government.

  30. Planet Mars, sorry for that. But please dont listen to what Maestro is saying,he will just destroy your home.read what he is saying carefully. The chap is a hopless character.Very confused indeed.Dont take his advice.Just sit down with your wife and solve the problem in a mature way.I wish you success in your marriage!

  31. #54. Maestro Hhehhe…..
I do not know what the man wanted at a brothel.
But the whole issue has ended in divorce because of what the woman was doing there, not what the man was going to do at the same place. The details are not clear anyway.

  32. Here is my plan:

    1) Stock up the food reserves. We should have at least 1 year worth of food. This should happen within the next 6 months. This means increasing storage capacity and actually buying the food.

    2) We need to get as much land as possible under cultivation. We have a maximum 1-2 year timeframe to do that.

    3) We need to create works projects after that, so rural areas and remote farms have their potential unlocked, and floods are prevented through ponds and swales, and water is allowed to be stored in the landscape.

  33. the mealie meal price cut has really earned the nyama a holiday, compliments of mfuwe animal managment area. the nyama has a ten day holiday with his entire clan to shade off the sweat that popped out during the mealie meal price reduction exercise. earlier this week znbc also reported that a fuel reduction had been effected in line with the nyama’s campaign promises. alas, these campaign promises appear to have been over promised because botswana, nambia and other many countries in the region have had fuel price reductions almost at the same time.
so the question is: is the price reduction in mealie meal as a result of hard work or a change in global food prices just like fuel.

  34. 63. Planet Mars thanks fellow Citizen especially for defying the lost #62.

Enjoy yourself and regards to your family.

  35. 61. and 65 MrK greeting and I assure you I lke you contributions. I read somewher that Zambia is currently only using about 6 – 7% of its total 750 000 square kilometres land. There is a lot of land that can be used to do everything possible.
However, how shall we achieve these proposals you are makig when Micheal Chilufya Sata at 71 years old age is still trying hard to be Zambian President? Also, the same man is busy encouraging Kaponyas and illiterates to use their little energy remaining in their bodies to go on countrywide demonstrations.
The Shikulu Sata is supposed to be farming like HH and Nawakwi lead by example so that kaponyas go for farming instead of dirty-ing towns and Cities.

  36. 70. Maestro Hhehhehhehhe,

Thank you very much and a merry Christmas and a good New Year to you and your loved ones.

I don’t understand what the mental block to developing agriculture is. The ability of the government to see to it that it’s citizens are well fed and clothed seems to me the first priority of any government. They don’t have to hand out free food, just make sure the circumstances exist where everyone can feed themselves and those who can’t don’t fall through the cracks. And a developed agricultural sector would be a huge revenue base for the government, apart from preventing food riots and having people spend money on other things apart from food.

  37. 71. MrK and 72. Planet Mars you are welcome and thank you too. Continue doing your noble job for the Zambian cause. Together, we will make it just as someone said “united we stand and divided we fall”.

Later, for I am now going to prepare for the Holy Sabbath day of our Lord God which falls tomorrow Saturday.

  38. the mealie meal issue is endless… can anyone teach these people to eat cake????? Its nshima ,nshima and nshima penapeeee!!!!
