Chambishi Copper Smelter to begin full operations next month

Share

The Zambia-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone, ZCCZ, has set aside substantial sums of money to secure operations at the Chambishi Copper Smelter in the wake of the global financial crisis.

ZCCZ, Board Chairman, Tao Xinghu, said adequate financial resources have been mobilized to ensure operations at the Copper smelter remain afloat despite the declining Copper prices and overall global financial crisis.

Mr. Tao, who spoke through an interpreter, told ZANIS in Mfuwe today that the smelter is set to begin full operations next month.

Mr Tao explained that construction works of the project were not affected by the global economic crunch.

About US$300 million has been injected in the Chambishi Copper Smelter construction project, which has an estimated production scale of 100, 000 metric tones of Copper concentrates per year.

Over 1, 200 job opportunities would be created for local people when the smelter begins its full operations.

  1. US$300 million is a huge sum. I hope that suffices to secure operations. At the momment, copper is the only thread our country is hanging on.

  2. History teaches us that we did not learn from history we depended on copper until the bottom failed off and we crashed. It looks like the Zambian minds are dull or void of thinking, Tourism has failed to take off due to too many problems leadership (Business leadership and Political leadership)Tourism is a business it is not like the small farm of corn we are inspecting instead of attending to major issues pressing the nation.

  3. its gud news for chambishi town,bt i think as of now as a country we shld start diversifying, not just relying on copper and mining as a whole..we should also look at agriculture and also tourism, this areas hav got potential to bail us out of the most current problems we’re facing as a nation.with agriculture we will be able to feed our selfs and the surplus can be for export,as for tourism we can earn some gud forex..i urge RB and his clowns to consider agriculture and tourism as key sector’s,to the development of our country.

  4. This is good news. However, I agree with ba Mwisho and Father Kwaanza. Meaningful and real diversification of the economy is long overdue. As long as we rely on copper only, we are at the mercy of fluctuating copper prices that are out of our control. But then, this song has been sung for decades. When are we going to act on it?

  5. I like this forum I encourage all the Zedians Let us begin to contribute in getting back from these leaders and many years of misrule by doing the following; 1. Run for Parliament help to come with laws which make sense in the economic running of the country 2. Open businesses at the cutting edge business which brings change e.g salaries and a work culture which rewards hardworking.Zambia is a land of opportunities, Zambia is a land flowing with milk and honey.

    #7Bamwisho,
Mining,Agriculture & tourism must be stimulated to grow with equal support.Tourism like mining is a fragile industry which suffers shocks from time to time.Outbreaks of diseases, political instability, high prices, emergence of popular destinations can affect tourism industry.

so entire diversification from copper is tricky,i mean why so long!!

    refference;GOLYATI
