Dear Rupiah,
Let me start by congratulating you on winning the presidential election. It was a close race I wonder how you pulled that off. Hey, why did you have to rush the inauguration? Two hours after you were declared winner you were being sworn in, don’t you think that was kind of suspicious? Before I get into the details, let me say we have never really met–officially. However, we did informally meet at Mulungushi during the Independence Eve celebrations in 2007. I am the guy who came to your high table and advised you that next time you host a national event like that you should invite groups from other parts of the country not just Eastern and Northern. Then I didn’t even think you were capable of being the Commander-in Chief.
Well, your job now Mr. President is not to attend parties and babysit diplomats who cannot get an audience with the President. You are actually the President. You get to make very important decisions that drive the twelve million citizens of this nation. You actually hire a team of men and women who are entrusted with the country’s wealth and power. Now that is a lot of responsibility on you and your team. As a leader, you get to supervise these individuals and make sure that they perform accordingly. And if they don’t you get to fire them. Already, you could use these powers on some of those guys you know.
The job of the President is not an easy one. Please stop whining about you having too much work and facing difficult times than any of your predecessors. In fact you have it easy. All you need to do is delegate. Delegate your work to some of the brightest men and women Zambia has. You may have to make a few international calls. But don’t worry the Zambians will pay for the calls. Ask some of these competent men and women in economics, agriculture, banking, medicine, and other disciplines to come help you stir the nation in the right direction. I certainly have a few names I could throw your way. Please don’t hesitate to ask. Remember what Mwanawasa did with Bank of Zambia. He fished Caleb Fundanga out from some foreign country.
In order to leave an indelible mark on the Zambian political scene I suggest you pick a cause you are passionate about. Your predecessor fought against corruption. I suggest you fight against illiteracy. Yes, dedicate your energy and time to fight this deadly disease in our country. Make sure that going to school becomes mandatory for every child in Zambia. In fact, pass a law that forces parents to enroll their children to school when they turn seven. Make education free for everyone. Build more schools in every corner of the country. Trust me the Japanese will gladly offer you a few grants for this project. Upgrade some colleges like Evelyn Hone and NIPA to universities. Talk education and dream education. I certainly don’t mind you napping during meetings as long as you are thinking about education.
When you wage this war against illiteracy you will be amazed what will happen to millions of Zambians. Millions will learn how to survive and create their own opportunities amidst the tough times. They will not look to the government to employ them. That is fewer headaches for you trust me. They will not bother any of you and your buddies in government. And most importantly, you leave a legacy that will be difficult to match.
Well, now you see even amidst what you call “difficulty times” you can create opportunities for yourself as the Commander-in-Chief. As long as you have sharp individuals doing the work for you there will be nothing to worry about. You can travel around the country supervising the school projects and no one will question you. Instead of sugar, please take a few good books and give the pupils—someone’s life could be changed forever. When the opposition sees you working hard like this, they will have no words.
Finally, if after three years the work is too much or you find the literacy campaign isn’t too exciting don’t hesitate to resign the presidency. It is not a sign of failure but a sign of courage. You will actually go down in history. You will have more sympathizers all around the country and continent. You will become the literacy campaign spokesperson of the United Nations. Your services will suddenly be needed in Bolivia, Bangladesh and all over the world. Being a private citizen can be fun and fulfilling after all.

Wesley Ngwenya’s insight in regard to improving education in Zambia is very good. We need a president who can passionately boost the number of schools on all levels, and the quality of education thoughout the country. Zambia is very behind when it comes to secondary and tertiary education. We really need to pull up our socks with a view to improving our poor standard of education. For this reason, we need to elect the president who has acquired a high level of education, e.g. either with a bachelor, or MA, or a doctorate degree, or something equivalent to these. Otherwise we are in limbo, we are doomed with our pride in little education. Viva Zambia. :((

To our politician they view a well informed society like they want to over through them. For example why does government keep avoiding to extend coverage of private radio stations (Radio Phoenix, Q Fm, Sky Fm, Zambezi Fm etc). You ask how he managed in a tight race, Zambian law recognises a one-vote win gap as necessary and sufficient; RB had thousants of votes above his next contender.
Zambian law states any minute after a winner is declared should be sworn in and the period should not exceed 24 hours. RB was sworn in after 2 hours, so much time was wasted.
Why did you want more time, for what? All was done within the law.

I have said the write has displayed ignorance because of the following:

He does not seem to understand that RB won by too much margine in tens of thousands and in terms of percentage more than 2%. That was too much because our constitution simply require 1 (single) vote above the closest.
2) “Hey, why did you have to rush the inauguration?” 2 hours was already more than enough; the law says once declared the president elect must be sworn in immediqately not not exceed 24 hours. In both cases the writer was ignorant.

And I am shocked that if I tell you that Chiluba is not a ‘thief’ until the courts of law say so you would think I support what Chiluba and SATA did to this nation, not at all.
If I tell you the RB won by a very wide margin, or I say the inauguration was all done in accordance with the law, that does not mean that I am supporting everything that RB does. These are separate clear unchangeable fact. I expected that to be quite easy.

The UN human development report 2007/2008 classed Zambia into the 60-70% bracket and that is in the same group as Algeria, Nigeria and India! What it means is that 6 to 7 out of every 10 Zambians can ‘identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate, compute and use printed and written materials associated with varying contexts… to enable them to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge and potential, and to participate fully in the wider society.’ What are those goals? I think we need more schools that can teach practical subjects such as farming, plumbing, bricklaying, carpentry etc. These will develop Zambia.

Like someone else has written above, we need to build NEW UNIVERSITIES from scratch starting in Southern, then Northern and later Eastern Provinces.
This can help to reduce congestion at UNZA and CBU considering the possible fact that enrolments to UNZA is about 50% of school leavers from Southern provinces schools including Hill Crest Technical, St Rapheals, Canicious (Spelling), St Edmunds’, Monze boys, Njase, St marks, Kalomo, etc. The same is almost true for CBU and I guess recently opened Mulungushi University. So, why not give a chance for students from other provinces to enter UNZA and CBU while many southerner students can be kept at a university in Southern P.

What zambia needs are not countless universities to teach Political and Social Sciences. What we need are Universities that will churn out individuals who will not just look to the Mines and Cellular Phones Service Provision companies for jobs, No.
We need universities that will churn out enterprising graduates who will look to turning our vast raw materials like sand, timber, water and even grass into something worth improving the lives and economic situation of our nation. Right now we have a lot of Graduates only in Mining Studies and countable engineering fields.
Being an educated fellow, I do agree with this young man. The problem in Zambia is lack of education. Education can perform wonders look at the Chinese and the Asians in general, these countries have invested in human capital (education), thats why the standard of living in those countries has increased exponentially.

The major problem facing Zambia at the moment is lack of Jobs. Schooling and Jobs go hand in hand. I recall recently when I visited Zambia and a reputable firm was seeking to recruit one or two people at Pamodzi Hotel, over a thousand turned up, all exceptionally educated in their own rights. A number of taxi drivers in Lusaka both registered or unregistered are well Educated even own mobile phones and communicate very well. Most of us who left our motherland for greener pastures left because there were no jobs or had been declared redundant following the misapplied and mismanaged privatisation. e.g. ZIMCO once a major employer with over 100 subsidiaries was shut.

By 2nd year, of all this number only about 90 Students go to the School of Engineering, 50 School of Medicine, 30 School of Mines, 70 School of Agriculture, 10 School of Veterinary Medicine, 20 Computer Science, 5 Physics, 20 Mathematics, 30 Biology, 10 Chemistry, 20 Natural Resources (whatever it is called) and the rest drop out due to failure to pass the examinations.
So,please justify your claims about the Mining and Cell 4n job seekers!

That is what most of the guys fail to see about zambia. Graduates are roaming the streets or doing the so called informal businesses, so the new graduates that some people on this blog are so much desiring, where are they going to work if i may ask.
We need to create jobs and not just casual jobs, but quality jobs with good working environment, good take home pay packets and most important of all quality gratuity or pensions for all.

Today SATA comes out to some people like the 90 day principle is the deliverance concept for Zambia.

You are right about graduates creating jobs to employ others, but remember a graduate fresh from university will have very little income or capital to venture into most enterprises that can create jobs. That is where the govt comes in, other than giving incentives to foreigner who are quick to run away from zambia, they need to give incentives to enterprising zambian businesses or individuals divorced from political partisan mentality. Even those from the opposition, with divergent views and critical to govt, but are enterprising should be catered for.
There is no time to start teaching RB modern economics as will not be able speak like the late PENSIA.

I for one do not hate Sata. His recent rantings about Chiluba suggest that he may have rabies! Chiluba was a problem from the start, that is why LPM resigned from his cabinet. All those who saw sense at that time did the same, but sata thought that he would continue to have his cake and eat it. It backfired. Chiluba realised that he had to pass on the button to someone of integrity and none of his leutenants qualified. Sata was gutted and remains a bitter man to today. From 22-28 December I was at Rusangu for music camp meeting for Zambia Union Conference, on Sabbath 28th HH attended the service with us it was so live that the congregation forgot that they were in Church. He donated a cow and bags of meal meal for the delegates. It was refreshing week.

It should not even be up to politicians, period, basic services should be delivered by the state, and guaranteed in the constitutions. If it i is up to politicians to deliver basic services, they can also withhold basic services, for instance to people who did not vote for them.
Basic services should be delivered by local councils, which should collectively receive 50% of nationally collected revenues (especially from the mines), for that very purpose – make them responsible for education, healthcare, policing and utilities.

Just yesterday, someone likened me to the drunken youth on the New Years pictures & I laughed it off. You can’t let every comment bother you. To indicate that all the President needs is to surround himself with people who can provide direction is very simplistic. What our Country needs is dynamic leadership at the helm. There is no point in aspiring for top post if one has no vision for the Country. A dynamic leader would have top on the Agenda,”Job creation”. Not necessarily in Mines, our Country needs major modernisation in field of infrascture development; Roads, Construction, Tourism are some of the areas that can absorb diverse skills. Otherwise what Ngwenya is suggesting is to pile on to the streets more educated people with no where to go. It is not the individuals’mandate to create employment, it is a national obligation.
