Share

The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested eight accountants at the Ndola cabinet office for theft of over two billion Kwacha meant for poverty reduction programnmes.

Public relations officer, Rosten Chulu, says the DEC has also seized 14 vehicles and two houses from the suspects.

Mr. Chulu said the accountants while acting with other unknown persons stole the funds belonging to government by virtue of their employment as civil servants.

He said the suspects laundered the money directly into properties such as motor vehicles and houses.

Mr. Chulu told ZNBC news in a statement that the eight accountants are remanded in custody and are expected to appear in court soon.

The Zambian government has declared war against corruption and misuse of public resources.

So far, a number of people who include former President, Frederick Chiluba, are appearing in court for theft of public funds and abuse of authority.

  1. “Zambia has no reason to remain poor”. Yes it has a very good reason – this is it. An overbloated government that sucks up and wastes trillions of Kwacha which should be going on road, school and hospital building.

  2. Poverty is all over and abound like flies over a dead cow carcass. How do you expect guys to account for money for poverty alliviation whan their home are the also stricken with poverty due to poor govt pay. Its just logical that the guys benefit first before extending the same help to others.
It is very difficult to blame the guy and ladies who were just doing what we all know is too rampant and highly allowed in to exist in govt. If Zaloumis can say K500pin per day as allowances for NCC freeloaders is peanuts what more with the civil servants and their pay.

  3. One of the headlines today reads “Zambia has no reason to remain Poor”

Now you are confirming it!!! I like your Style LT!!!

  4. #5 in Mongu ili bad. Auditors were threatened wth witchraft.who wil risk his knowing everyone is in the same boat.anyway congrats DEC. Finish anyandule.

  5. It makes no sense being a very loyal and ‘transparent’ ‘Evil Servant’ and get peanuts later. Kuba joina fye otherwise you will never stay in Chalalasdale

  6. Corruption is very costly on the welfare of the country and it should be approached from the point of view, of the effects it has on development. Corruption is one of the major obstacles to progress, and its effects on development are disastrous. There is need to urgently wipe out this disease. [-x

The most irritating thing is, justice takes ages to prevail. At times you might end up thinking in the same lines …. was just joking though…

  8. Please arrest National Olmpic committee member Chenda Chilufya and Mirriam Moyo, If FAZ has a case to answer, then take them to court as well for taking advantage of mayukwa. Lets stop corruption in sport. Yalakosa this year.

  9. shame on the accountants. actually, most zambian accountants are thieves. they need to be checked. well done guys at the DEC.

  10. The propensity to steal by civil servants has just become unacceptable. This has inevitably become part of our culture and will be very difficult to shake off and it’s happening at the expense of national development. People don’t care anymore and they are risking imprisonment because of greed and self-serving interests. The low rate of corruption convictions is not helping the situation as people believe their chances of getting off the hook are higher than been convicted. We need to establish a special court that can dispense these cases swiftly with heavy penalties.

  11. #18, that’s a sweeping statement and is absurd at the very list. What do you have against accountants? Are you mathematically and financially challenged or what? In this day and age it’s important to get rid of a prejudicial mindset and treat such events on a case by case basis.

  12. Guys,These are not Qualified accountants but accounts assistants.Qualified acc dont still but make drawings only.

    Keep it up dec.

U need to visit the chief accountant at ministry of health as well and check on the property the guy has amssed.

  13. As the book of Kohelet says ” he who loves money never has money enough” and also The Mishlei says “Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow”. Stealing to pay for luxuries and using the excuse that you are paid peanuts has it’s consequences . This is why most of these plunderers in training never get any wealth from being sticky fingered because money earned through dishonest means likes to do disappearing acts.

  14. # 13 Lulu,

Mwamba buyo kabotu basa. Twapenga maningi! Why should professional accountants learned with all the ethics rob the poor Zambian of national resources meant to alleviate poverty. Moyo wachisa maningi!

  15. Punish them!stealing is becoming a cancer in Z.Ba ACC naimwe mwikatafye abaiche abakulu mulebasha.Luk at the chief acc at min of heath.he is a bwanaa mwebo!

  16. ha ha ha….if you ,conduct a good forensic audit in Zambia Govt ministries many civil servants would be locked up. We only hear such cases when there is a whistle blower like in the case of the copperbelt fellows. It is unfortunate that the staff that should help in the accountability of the funds of development share it before it reaches its intended purposes.

  17. The DEC has become a force to reckon with. This is good progress from these officers of the law.
No. 30 bobe! it should not daunt you that the law enforcers have started out small, soon the small fish will start talking and all the vagabonds will be brought in.

  18. 14 vehicles and 2 houses divided among 8 people does not make sense. DEC please do proper investigations before pouncing on people’s properties. One may ask what is the value of these cars and two houses, definitely they can’t amount to k2bn. It is normal even for marketeers these days to own more than one vehicle!

  19. They should not stop there but arrest who ever is their boss cause someone with authority had to authorise the withdrawal or diversion. Ask how these ministers can afford to import Hammers on their salaries?? someone is getting paid big time!

  20. 4. Chitapankwa,

Absolutely. Half of national revenues should be spent at the local government level. Let’s free up local government and let the people set the priorities, not these career politicians in Lusaka.

Have you had a chance to visit the NCC forums yet – please do, register and leave a contribution.

  21. Accountants in Zambia are thieves. Check this, in most companies owned by South Africans, procurement functions are surbordinated to Finance Dept, Why? Because, they always want to steal.
What is ZICAS doing about thieving accountants??? Shame on you.

Ici cimusango was brought about by Chiluba. Please arrest and lock up that SHORT criminal and all these thefts will end.

  22. Financial accountability in government departments has a lot of loop holes. It is based on retirement of funds using forms which give more than enough room for manipulation and cheating. Why is it that accoutants, for example, those in high schools have fatter bank accounts than the teachers who have much higher salary scales.Stealing in the public service will continue as long as the current loopholes are not sealed. :”>

  23. #27 nine chale with my whole bag of sins i wouldn’t throw a stone at those fellas,i’d hurl a rock at the assholes!such people are the ones responsible for our country being poor. :-l:-l:-l
