Yet another SADC meeting on Zimbabwe

Share

SADC has called yet another meeting with Zimbabwe’s main political leaders in Harare on Monday next week to discuss the current political impasse and map the way forward.

SADC chairman and South African President Kgalema Mothlanthe said on Thursday, the meeting which was initially scheduled for Friday, was postponed at the request of one of the parties.

Zanu-PF leader, President Robert Mugabe and the two MDC formation principals Morgan Tsvangirai and Arthur Mutambara were expected to attend the meeting.

The three main parties signed a power-sharing deal last year but implementation of the pact has been delayed due to differences over the allocation of key ministerial posts and the composition of the Security Council, among other issues.

SADC leaders, including Mozambican President Armando Guebuza and former SA president Thabo Mbeki, who is also the chief mediator in the Zimbabwe inter-party talks, were also expected to attend the meeting.

“President Kgalema Motlanthe will on Monday 19 January 2009 lead a SADC delegation to Zimbabwe where discussions will be held with leaders of the country’s political parties involved in the inter-party dialogue,” read part of the statement.

The meeting would be followed by a meeting of the negotiating teams on outstanding matters related to implementation of the September 15 agreement and Constitutional Amendment Number 19 Bill.

Despite the delay in implementation of the power-sharing deal, all parties have expressed commitment to the deal.

  1. The only thing that will get Mugabe out of office is a bullet or the hand of YHWH. This meeting is just an old friends reunion and useless because camaraderie of these old chaps will always be a hinderance. Mugabe and friends actually believe this is a war against imperialism that can be won at the expense of zimbabwean lives.

  2. I hope something tangible will be resolved. Only hope our capable leaders will be empathetic enough towards the common Zimbabwean that has suffered owing to certain political and socio-ecomonic decision errs.

  3. At first I took Mugabe for a hero but over the long run I have failed to comprehend his behavior. He has managed to make his country vulnerable to all sorts of evils.
The SADC leaders have now reached the point of limitation and I don’t think there is any capacity left for change unless the old man throws in the towel.
    I’m watching…:-?

  4. complete waste of time. Bob Mugabe is a joker & his people don’t see it fit to rise up against his tyranny. I say, let the harsh economy drive this fragile Govt to it’s knees instead of wasting time & resources on these clowns. In the past, we’ve always sacrificed so much for our so called neighbours but ALL in vain. This time around, to HELL with them.

  5. SADC itself is a joke. LPM tried to pump sense in this moribund gravy train in which id!ots like Tomasz Salomao, the executive secretary, just suck off the cream while Zimbabweans are suffering from cholera. Namibia, Congo and Angola are all complicit to the buffoonery going on across the Zambezi. Enough, we say, you have chewed enough of our taxes, b@stards.

  6. I am afraid the presidential helicopter will need a good supply of shock absorbers pantu yalepwa sana kuma trips yakufolesha sugar

  7. lol # 15

But again SADC nayo…Zim has cholera cases and bonse ama nebazii we know that its ghetto life there. None of countries maybe with the exception of SA would send health professionals to aid suwa? even 20 per country? As african nations we may not have the capacity to offer medical supplies but few nurses, clinic officers, an MD here.

Really sad but plan for a SADC meeting at this time? Channel those resources to cholera aid even IMF would be shocked at that.

    Just my 2 cents.

  8. SADC LEADERS,

Please come up with something concrete this time for the innocent lives of Zimbabwe.Mugabe and Morgan are safe and enjoying life in all areas,so when descussing the crisis in Zim,dont just spend time talking about Mugabe and Morgan, but talk of how you are going to rescue pipo of Zim from the crisis they are facing.Dont even think of sanctions coz those sanctions only affect the poor pipo of Zim.God help the Pipo of Zim. Even Zambians become nervous, especially when there is a shortage of mealie meal. Now Zimbabweans, not only don’t have mealie meal but also have cholera!! 28. Lisa, ba maureen and cutey. Which schools did u attend? All your comments dont hold any water at all. You are embarrasing Zambia! Nine Chale, matworld nice guy, gazzie and others, big up. Baby c also represents Zambia very well but she spends most of her time chatting with other bloggers, which is good and bad at the same time. When she means business, she really means it but when she means to be playful ,thats another thing. Fine, maestro and mukelebai think they are too educated! The rest, i dont knw

  29. The man Mugabe has eventually turned into a real big disgrace for Africa and for Zim in particular. It’s a shame how the SADC nations make him look a hero. It looks that no one of these our leaders has courage to look him in the eye and say u have messed up enough Bob! It’s time to let go.
Shame, and again I say shame!

  30. ” Yet another SADC meeting on Zimbabwe ”

Oh yeah, SADC, they only sit around and call meetings – that’s the meaning of this headline, right? Meanwhile the MDC have called their umpteenth meeting on whether they are going to join Mugabe’s cabinet.

  31. I thunk Zambia MUST now boycott all the upcoming meeting on Zimbabwe to show that we as a Nation are not happy with what is going on there things appear to be in a circus mode.

  32. Sinking titanic! People thought LPM was dreaming. Zambia should not waste its energy on these ungrateful neighbours. We helped them during the liberalization struggle and as soon as they got Independence they started bullying and killing Zambians on our bourders. Once beaten twice shy!!Even if we come with a good proposal other countries will take the credit. So why waste our energy! Lets concentrate on our own problems. Aknhulu mpuno and others.

Let the balance of nature take its course and Zimbabwe will narurally rise and overcome its current political doldrums!:d/

  36. Change in Zimbabwe can only come from within. Who spearheaded the Kaunda regime change? The Zambians. Zimbabweans should do the same! However, in hind-sight they should be very careful with that ‘trade unionist’. We all know what happened when we elected one as our president.

  37. al least these coolies from zimbabwe have learnt one lesson that when you are up there doing fine don’t look down with scorn at your pall who is incapacitated. Aba ba mbuli balitumpile muma 80′ ninshi ifwe yali tenser muli kaunda.when every zimbabwean could not drink tea without milk.butter ni chokako weka, chocolate
Ifwe twaishibekofye ishina. And there newspapers were awash with cartoons
Scorning zambians. I remember vividly one which was like, how do you identify a zambian?and the could draw a ka guy ku counter in a zim restaurant with 15 bottles of coke and fanta ninshi kalenwa.that was then.now today nabo naibekata
Worse even bena nabachipa their pride has been swallowed kuli na ma h
