The number of Cholera cases in Lusaka has significantly reduced in the last two weeks.

Lusaka District Disaster Management and Mitigation Committee Chairperson, Christah Kalulu, has attributed the reduction to a number of interventions put in place by the committee.

Ms Kalulu, who is also Lusaka District Commissioner, cited community sensitization as a major factor that has led to a reduction in the number of Cholera cases.

She was speaking in Lusaka today during the Lusaka District Disaster Management and Mitigation Committee weekly media briefing in Lusaka today.

Ms Kalulu disclosed that her committee has released K162 million to go towards the erection of 18 water tanks in all cholera prone areas of the district to enable residents have access to safe and clean water.

She further disclosed that six water tanks would be mounted in Kanyama and another six in Chawama Compound.

Ms Kalulu said the committee has so far used K501 million for the distribution of chlorine and disinfection of surfaces in the affected areas, from the K2.4 billion budgetary allocation for disaster management.

She reiterated government’s commitment in assisting affected communities but urged the public to take precautionary measures such as proper disposal of waste and observing high hygienic standards to mitigate the further spread of Cholera.

Ms Kalulu has since commended the media for being pro-active in highlighting and reporting issues relating to Cholera.

  3. Well done!!! Did you chase away those Street Vendors or Zimbabweans?

Or did you make the sweep the streets after arresting them?

  4. The worst part of our governance is they are always correcting situations instead of preventing.Job weldone to the lady involved but in future measures should be put in place to avoid occurance of the disease.Citizens together with the council should insure gabage is collected and thrown to designated areas.Bateta bombeni na council to curb cholera limbi kuti twamipela third term

  5. Ms Kalulu disclosed that her committee has released K162 million to go towards the erection of 18 water tanks in all cholera prone areas of the district to enable residents have access to safe and clean water.

Why is Ms Kalulu using the word erection and not construction?

  6. Zambia might have imported the cholera thing from Zimbabwe, but again we always had cholera every mango season (RAIN SEASON)since KK’S days.

  7. The precipitating factors for cholera are clearly known which are water, sanitation and garbage management. Unfortunately, we Zambians still play to the gallery on these aspects. Management of these factors requires heavy social investment for improvement of water supply and sanitation. For as long as we negate on these aspects cholera shall never leave Zambia.

So #28 thanx 4 advertising yo ignorance and st.pidity

  10. Why not use the money before the cholera outbreak, I was shocked to find that in John Lang, a township in LUSAKA, they are still using underground water wells, man that was a shock. I lived in rural areas and that felt normal, but not in the middle of Lusaka, shaaa.

  11. Public Health is non existant in Zambia anymore. One needs to strengthen the Public health Act and enforces it. Look at health inspectors in Zambia, they go to inspect a filthy food handling joint and come out smiling and give it clean bill.
I wonder what Victor Mukonka is doing in the Ministry of Health as incharge of Public health department?? Obviously very good at attending workshops.
Take a look at the procurement books of water utility companies and see when last they procured Chlorine for water purification and you will no longer wonder why we are still talkning about Cholera i this day and age.

  12. TiONGE #17 you have realy rekindled memmories of 91.unip cholera was a chorus at every MMD rally but can you go a step further and tell the bloggers who the chief choir masters are? They were four principle masters

  13. This cholerla issue will never end. Its year in year out. The city fathers just go to the chambers debate, debate then nothing comes out. Keep Lusaka clean campaigns they come in all colors. A few years ago part of business community joined hands because of politics nothing happened Nikisi. Last year we had floods and declared as National Disaster. Look today despite billions of kwacha donated within abroad. No tangiable results have been achieved to date.

Don’t be surprised its the upbringing. Its politics as usual MMD will say the Lusaka City Council is controlled by PF and the latter will point at MMD. That is how life goes in Third World.
Next time no funds story etc
