Matero receives K100 million for bridge works

Share

Government has released K100 million for repair of roads and bridges in Lusaka’s Matero township and surrounding areas.

People of Matero and other areas have been concerned especially about the destroyed footbridge culvert on a stream between Lilanda and Chunga compounds.

This culvert has been in a very bad state for a long time and is of great danger especially to school going children who have been facing difficulties crossing the stream during the rain.

Matero Constituency Member of Parliament, Faustina Sinyangwe, confirmed the release of the K100 million for her constituency to carry out repairs and constructions road projects.

“Money has been released but I do not know why Lusaka City Council has taken this long to hire contractors who will commence the work,” she said.

Meanwhile, Lusaka City Council (LCC) spokesperson Chanda Makanta said the council was still looking in this matter.

Ms. Makanta argued that although the money has been released, Matero was not the only constituency which has projects such that those of culverts.

She pointed out that the LCC was lacking adequate manpower hence the delay in carrying out some of the road projects in the city.

She urged the residents of Matero and surrounding areas to stop dumping garbage in the drainages because this blocks the water ways, causing overflowing in the stream hence destroying the footbridges.

She further called upon the people to cooperate with the Lusaka City Council by forming groups which should carry out simple tasks of clearing drainages instead of waiting for LCC to do the work.

Mrs. Makanta attributed the flooding of most areas in the city to the mushrooming of unplanned settlements.

She said some people have built houses on sewer pipes and drainage systems, which is making it difficult for LCC to carry out its functions effectively.

She has however warned the people who have built houses and other structures on undesignated land that such structures will soon be demolished
Mrs. Makanta noted that such structures were dangerous to both owners and the community as a whole.

  1. I urge the residents to ensure that the cash is no pocketed but put to its intended use. Keeping that money in some bank account for years is counter productive!!

  2. Jamaco, goodmorning man. good move and i hope there will be proper accountability for the money.Ubuntungwa mu Zambia, mwabuka shini naimwe?

  3. Put up better drainage stystem. Zed has the worse drainage system in the world. You will keep rebulding the same roads and bridges over and over again as long as you don’t fix the this problem. Yaba 😕

  4. 5. Rashid Jones Goodmorning!! This really what we need. My breakfast even tastes better.

Awe twatotela. But Please do not forget Maintenance after Building Imwe :d

  5. # Rashid Jones,
Thanks alot. Am alright except irked by the fact that my cows cannot produce milk as they used to contending that they are on economic recess!!
I will now extract it from Soy beans. As such you will now resolt to Soy Milk. Is that fine with you Rashid?

  6. chanda makanta, ulo ulupiya mwalalulya ku council.please just advertise for bids and select a bidder who can do the job.that excuse of shortage on manpower should not arise.twalishiba ifyo mubomba

  7. Mwana Muchende, the only problem is that Soya milk sounds like Njama Soya and you know what that means. I have never liked Nyama Soya from day one.

  8. Government should suspend funding of all projects until a time they find capable people who can carry out works with competence ,patriotism and love for the country. Why not construct bridges that can stand the test of time?every year its the same story of bridges being washed away.Everyday government is realising money for projects but no tangible results.Lets change our strategy

  9. The problem starts with the recruitment process, they should employ meritocracy recruitment methods to ensure the best of Zambian human capital is optimised.

  10. “Lusaka pastors insist Chiluba is not corrupt” The Post Newspaper, 21/01/09.

LT this is hot news. Please bring it on.

  11. Awe guys, ndiye pe naona. this amount is too little,it will just be a drop in the ocean because matero is too big.

  12. The roads and bridges in most townships in Lusaka are in a deplorable state. I went to Zambia in December for my Christmas break. The streets in Libala stage 3 leave much to be desired. The likes Kubu, Kapoli, Kaaze streets, to mention but a few.
Given Lubinda is just:-@ too much instead of representing the people…

  13. It’s indisputable that MMD delivers on its obligations but seemingly we are caught up with our cultural issue of easy money. Not surprised with # 1 menatality, Sadly most Zedians are naturally noise makers with this free riding mentality premised on non commitment of purpose for the common good. Very few are futuristic in their conduct. Least we know that BOMA can only facilitate development through policy, resource and manpower mobilization but cannot be liable to our failed cultural habits as # 1. If we don’t learn from Obama’s call to service, a 1000 years with billions of released development funds will keep yielding zero results.

  14. Matero Constituency ‘Rebel’ Member of Parliament, Faustina Sinyangwe, confirmed the release………

    Goodmorning Bloggers

  15. #23 Sage,
Well said. But mind the usage of the abreviation BOMA. We are no longer under the British Overseas Military Administration (BOMA) arrangement.

  16. Iwe Makanta…We pay the government about 33% PAYE, one of the highest in the world. VAT is 16%, and slaries are low. After all these sacrifices to the state and LCC (you also charge us for parking in town), can you honestly request us to collect garbage in the drains? You are paid to do that…Why don’t you wear jombo’s and lead by example?

  17. I only hope GRZ will use credible contractors to do this job on time and to specification as wells as within the budget/contract/ToR.

  18. Where is Phoenix/Pheonix Contractors?? They were very efficient and with modern equipment. Sometimes it’s wise to pay more for quality.

  19. #29 Like they say, ‘cheap is expensive’ we are paying through our noses for using the lowest bidders to do jobs around zed. Phoenix was very good but also very expensive. Its quality of work that matters here so who ever has their cell no.please jus page and let them come back. This time without Mpondela please !

  28. I thought i was logged onto a different site…there are mature and sane people in Zambia..thought they had all gone with the brain drain…keep it up terrence. As barack said in his speech yesterday- we maybe a team of dreamers may promise you many changers and many of you may wonder how we will achieve this, but we will achieve coz we believe..Lets believe in people regardless of their political , religion, ethnic, racial inclination…they too will make misatakes and promises and may not meet all our expectations, but atleast they were not ashamed to try…less criticism ..more positivism and #27 how do you not expect to pay for the garbage and waste you create?? Be serious!

  29. To all my fellow bloggers

  34. 19, GUMU GUMU
Hi, I am waiting for this story as well.

Its interesting also to note how the Pastors compared the excesses of Chiluba and M’membe’s Hummers.

“…They are even talking about suits when themselves have got more than twenty suits, they are driving Hummers, the Hummers of this world worth billions. If they were in State House, what would prevent them from flying jumbo jets, you know, if they are driving Hummers? Let’s be honest, can you compare yourself to the President?….”

You’re making pipo cry with your goodbyes. The best you can do is to find some spare time once in a while & bogg in.

You’re a nice guy, Im sure you can find some time between your studies.

    Im almost dropping a tear………………….ooooops!

  38. This govt should be ashamed of itself for releasing such a small amount of money when it probably a one months salary of a minister.100m is only but a fraction of the total revenue it collects from the residents of Matero.Stop the bragging and give to the people what belongs to them.Shame on you.

  39. Ba Sauberian am sure you know there are many projects in Zam,bia that need funding..we have less donor funding so its only wise for us to be prudent wiour money..
Did you read the new act over ministers salaries and allowances?? please do maybe you will comment better mind you those were gross annual so divide by 12 and apply tax..

  40. Ba Ludacris.I may be wrong in some parts of my comment but the punchline is that 100m is too little to brag for especially when minister and MPs are getting huge sums at the end of the month.

  41. Chanda Makanta, address the problem in Matero. For now do not concern yourself with other areas that are facing similar problems. Concentrate on Matero issue and deal with it because it has funding. Do not take money somewhere else.
Do not discuss what the community is supposed to do to keep drainages clean. Repair the bridge now and discuss that later. Do things step by step, chapwa

  42. Goodmorning bloggers! I hope you’re all fine.

Hey Matworld, where do you think are you going? Stay here…and don’t make big men like me start shedding tears. I hate goodbyes! We came to stay!!!:((

  54. 75. You have firmly placed one foot in blogging grave by choosing to be confrontational. That does not help. you get a bit of some attention but later everyone forgets you. there is a whole graveyard of bloggers. you are next. MYSRIP

  55. LT check the comments on ^&. LT where at thou!!! geuss you are having credit crunch t-bone at Thorn Park market

  56. ZMK100 million is probably only enough for repair of one bridge. How many bridges and roads in Matero require repairing? Matero is a big enough area to have its own council. We need to decentralize and have a couple of councils in each locality in the city. Due to overheads at the civic centre only a fraction of that money will reach Matero, literally.

  57. LT check the comments on 67. LT where at thou!!! geuss you are having credit crunch t-bone at Thorn Park market

  58. Yes pay as you chat is a brilliant idea. There would be no nonsensical bloggers like the one from Tanzie.Insults were meant to be written in sand.Compliments on the blog.

Rashid I have seen more sensible contributions from you than this hater.

Back to the topic. Guys I don`t know how many bridges one can repair with £14 350. But, whatever it is, as long as the money is used wisely I am happy.
