Chinese investor eyes potion of Mosi-otunya national park for development

Share

Government says China has expressed interest in putting up a hotel with a 600 bed capacity.

Southern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Aaron Zulu, disclosed this in Livingstone today when he led a Chinese delegation into the Musi-o-tunya National Park to check on areas of possible investments.

Mr Zulu hoped that Chinese Investors would show interest in the five areas and start developing the area they would choose as soon as possible.

One of the areas is the 47 hectare land where Legacy Hotels had proposed to put up a hotel.

And Manager of Investment Department in China at Non Ferous Metal Corporation, NFMC, Guo Ran said the Chinese delegation was in Livingstone to look at some investment opportunities in the tourist capital.

Mr Ran said Zambia was a very beautiful country that offered beautiful and exciting sites.

He could, however, not disclose how much China was going to invest in the infrastructure development project.

  1. Legacy Hotels was denied permission by ECZ for very sound environmental reasons. Now how are the Chinese coming to say they are putting a hotel? No, please…

  2. I have no comment. I confused because at the moment I have mixed feelings.

Maybe I will comment later in the day. :-??

  3. On a serious note, we are in a position where we need investment whether from China, Libya or yes even Nigeria:d.

The only worrying thing is the way China is suddenly more interested in investing in Zambia.

Welcome but I am not holding my breath. I smell a rat here.

aba bantu just do things to benefit themselves and not zedians as a whole, its so painful mwandi,we have so much to boast of but reap nothing out of it,if it were in another country awe mwandi am sure we would be rated as one of the rich countries pa africa, they could have utilised all resources in a good manner and it would have benefited everyone.we keep admiring other countries yet we have what it takes.yak! i seriously get pissed.
    selfishness pa zed yalipaka bad…

  14. We put up a very good fight to thwart Legacy’s intention, please GRZ give us a break. Recently the ECZ (with similarities naba ECZ) approved a Lions project in the Dambwa Forest that’s less that 20km from the Livingstone CBD. Anyway let them come and deplete the overgrown Elephant population which is causing havoc in small scale farmers field around Livingstone. Did you know that Kasaba Bay was bid for by a reputable Zambian Businessman but was he offered?

  15. #29 3RqU nangu tukaye but are they going to carry their 600 bed capacity Hotel with them to China?
Ni land reform Mugabe style, bawishi! <):)

  16. Ladies and gentlemen, in as much we ould like to develop our country, we should be mindful of consequences that come with development in the wrong direction. Development near on inside a national park will never be right!!! We need to protect our biodiversity at atleast when we can. I wonder who actually awards or approves such development proposals…ECZ, where are you? Mr. Zulu may want the Chinese to commence construction of the 600 bed space hotel, he is looking at this only from one angle. Iwe Zulu, look at its impact on the environment. If we continue with this trend of development in Southern Province, one day we’ll find that we have run out of tourist attraction

  17. Legend of the Falls #33. That`s what I was saying.

With that complex pa Zed immigration officers will even be saluting when tusks are going to China.

  18. Balekeni ma choncholi.Banazujha chalochabo. You can imagine how it would have been like if the one-child policy had not been introduced in 79.It would have been one out of every two people you see is chinese.

  19. zambians, you dont know infrstructure development lekeni bamifundeko.all you know is buying posh cars.zimya neighbour and who told you that they are only intersted in zambia.don’t you know that even the might joburg has embraced chinese investments?

  20. You Chinese, don’t just bring men ku Zambia. You should balance these things try bringing your ladies as well tizi kwatilana.

  21. This development is welcome so long as the Game Wardens become xtra vigilante coz Chinese guys can be terrible with elephant tusks and rhino horns.
Secondly the structures should be permanent and not prefabs.

  22. # 39 twakana tu choncholi. we need the park as natural as it can be. that place is not big enough to take up big infrastructure otherwise soon there will be no park. all the animals will cross the Zambezi to Zimbabwe and the tourists will shift camp to Zimbabwe and the so called investment will remain a white elephant.
we buy cars for ourselves, vehicles are no longwe a luxury in Zambia but a necessity. and if i can afford to buy a car why shouldnt I? should i be afraid of pipo like you who will call me a zimya neighbour. the Zambians shall fight that development tooth and nail and i will be one of them who will sign the petition once again. **==**==**==

  23. # 41,what do you mean Sate shuold have won? Dont tell me you one of the “FAKE BLUES” who think Sata lost.

Tuma chocholi twa chabe. look out.

  24. # 39 ULI KAPONDO CHACHINE. ZIMYA NEIGHBOUR? ARE SURE ABOUT THAT? I SYMPTHISE WITH YOU THINKING. I THINK NILIBE MAU.
I HAVE BOUGHT A CAR BECAUSE MY KIDS ARE PLACE IN FAR FETCHED PRIVATE SCHOOLS, I CANT STAND THEM LEAVE HOME AS EARLY AS 06.00 HRS SO AS A PARENT I BOUGHT A CAR, FOR THEM AND I DRIVE THEM TO SCHOOL. THIS CAR TAKES ME POINT A TO POINT B. I HAVE NO PROBLEMS WHEN I GO TO MY 5 ACRES SMALL HOLDING. I DONT NEED TO HIRE A TRUCK OR A CAR. IN FACT I HAVE A LIGHT TRUCK AS WELL. ITS NOT ZIMYA NEIGHBOUR ITS SERIOUS INVESTMENT ON MY PART AND AM PROUD TO BE HOME BECAUSE “YES I CAN”

  25. but can you zimya neighbour with a corrolla,if you didn’t get the point of the argument just shut up. Nangu kucholekana ulefwaya.ka #49 naiwe steady sana

  26. It is easy to attack Chinese verbally but very few of us are willing to take action and challenge them as self-made investors like # 52 Ubwikalo has done.
Criticism won’t change anything, people, Obama has shown us how to do it… ACTION speaks louder than words.
As Goethe said, the theory is grey, while the tree of life is always green.

  27. Legacy Hotels was denied that land, Zambians fought it tooth and nail – for obvious good reasons. Development in wrong directions twakana. this is my my opinion and yes will petition if it comes again. and please Akapondo dont send threats here – am too smart for such..

  28. the crux of the matter is that, for us to to achieve what others have achieved , we have to learn from them.and the chinese are a typical example.they are a third world country with poverty levels similar to ours.but we can’t march their their development , aggression towards duty and their work culture is totally different from ours.always on time for work.100% effort no pilfering et al. Go to china today.visit cities like hangzhou, sanya, xiamen and you will see what they have achived.you will even realise that queing up for an american visa or british where you are made to look like clowns it’s a sheer waste of self esteem

  29. # 57 – WE WANT MEANINGFUL INVESTMENT NOT NTEMBA ZA BANTU. WE HAVE TRAVELLED AND WE HAVE SEEN WHAT SERIOUS CHINESE INVESTORS CAN DO. EVEN THOSE THAT SELL CLOTHS IN JOZI – THEY SELL QUALITY STUFF WHICH IN TURN ZAMBIANS ORDER AND SELL BACK HERE, WERE WE ALSO HAVE CHINESE INVESTORS’ SHOPS. WE ARE TIRED OF THEM BECAUSE WE HAVENT SEEN ANY MEANINGFUL INVESTMENT APART FROM GROWING CABBAGES, REARING CHICKENS AND SELLING AT SOWETO MARKET. THEY THEMSELVES SELL AT SOWETO ALL THE ZAMBIANS DO IS CALL FOR CLIENTS… THESE TUMA INVESTORS’ ARE SEEN EATING NSHIMA AND DRIED KAPENTA FROM SIAVONGA AND YOU CALL THEM INVESTORS. THESE ARE THE BUSINESS’ FOR OUR MARKETEERS AND THE LOCALS THAT CAN AFFORD TO REAR

  30. It is a pity we have are tying ourselves with Chinese investors. These guys have shown their true colours that they are by no means genuine. This policies are going to be very costly to the country in the long run

  31. This govt is used to getting handouts. Soon they will sell this country to the highest bidder. Watch this space. You will soon have no say on what will be going on in your country. Zambians wake up.

  32. CHINESE INVESTORS HAVE GONNE TO AN EXTENT OF RUNNING GROCERY SHOPS IN KAMWALA AND MAYBE OTHER PLACES, SELLING GEISHA SOUP AND ALSO RUNNING A KA BUTCHERY AT THE CORNER IN THE SAME SHOP. IF THE BRING UP SOMETHING – ITS INDEEP POOR QUALITY. LET THEM OPEN UP INDUSTRIES IF THEY WANT NOT MA HOTEL – YALI MBWE MBWE MBWE EVEN LOCALS OWN THEM IN LIVINGSTONE.
AS FOR ME CORROLLA, HAMMER, BENZ, BMW, WHATEVER THE MAKE AS LONG AS ITS A CAR. ZAMBIANS BACK HOME HAVE FORSIGHT, THUS I CANT ZIMYA NEIGHBOUR WITH A CAR, YACHEPA SANA. LETS JUST SUPPORT SERIOUS INVESTMENT IF ZAMBIA HAS TO DEVELOP.

  33. # 63 ati shani mune. nsambila amenshi, natural water, no jaribu, no mekako, no ambi kamudodo no nothing nabikapo na mixture ya lotion and vaseline.

  34. A Chinese court handed down the maximum sentence of life imprisonment on the dairy company chairwoman whose cover-up of tainted baby formula resulted in the deaths of six infants and sickened more than 300,000.

A man who sold 600 tonnes of the industrial chemical melamine, which was mixed with milk to increase falsely its protein content, was sentenced to death while an accomplice received a life sentence on charges of endangering public safety.

  35. NATURAL BEUTY.twatotela limbi nomba twalaumfwana.nawishiba ifwe fwe ma zambians nokukalabana tatwakalabana nga abanensu.my sister just look at nigerians where ever you go, you find them nentemba balikata.even here in zambia they are here just selling phone accesories making big money.go to china, inside china nigerians and other guys from west africa including tanzanians they are there and they have employed chinese.making good money nokutuma kumwabo.so the way utu tubantu tuleisa naifwe tufwile tuleima.ifya kwikala pamayo nafyena filalenga ukushalila

  36. Guys let us be serious, we know how sacred Rhino and Elephant horns are to the Chines, please let us not allow them, if they are serious there are other areas within Zambia were they can invest, they will definately finish our Rhinos and Elephants just for ivory.

  37. Fire from Zion in de shape of a Lion come fe bun down de Dragon!
Negus Nagasti, Khadamawi Khadamawi. Igzebeher Yimasgan!

  38. # 72 i think fwe ma Zambians tula konka sana amafunde for other countries. Very few Zambians are so brave as to misbahave/break laws or live illigally in foreign land. elyo mu Zambia i think tamwaba ifunde, too many illegals and even utu tu choncholi they come here as investors but what is on the ground is different. and our Government pretend not to see it. Uku kalabana nifyo fine, again banono ama Zedians. kanshi ba Zambia bale chitako ama Medicals, some of these choncholis can never even qualify pantu most of them a straight from prison – seeing is believing.

  39. Very few of the Choncholis build infrastructure for their own use. They only build for others or should i say bussiness. They would rather rent a building for their work as they build for others after winning contracts. NOT READY TO LEAVE INFRASTRUCTURE IN ZED. o->o->o-+

  40. Two of their own people have been sentenced to death and several jailed for contaminating baby milk and at least 6 children died, because of greed.the Chinese were washing their mining equipment in N/W Zambia, the toxins found their way into the zambezi river hence the fish having ifilonda. I mean what next? I was travelling back to uk,(the time of the chinese or koreans building the UNIP headquaters)the customs officials at the airport nabbed all those tuma chinchwa because they all had Ivory cut into small rectangle pieces and carefully wrapped in some paper to avoid detection. This Ivory is used for medicinal purposes in China, but they had not declared it..Resources will clap

  41. contd. There is still a ban on fish coming from Mongu. Zed is a very nice place with so much potential, hence these Rasputins coming to steal the resources we have. They do not give a toss what anyone says because they have some protection from govt. They should be taxed heavily, because some who have come to so called invest remit the monies back their own countries.Look at the way we are treated once you get to heatrow airport by Customs, and those big sniffer dogs. if found with even a small packet of kapenta they throw it away. Can Customs at Lusaka Int Airport explain how these trophies carried by chinese and other foreign nationals manage to go through without detection. Nichekeleko!

  42. It seems that here are much prejudice on Chinese. I am a CHINESE, I am sorry if there is some chinese don’t behavior good in Zambia. But I want to tell you some truth.

30 years ago, China was a poor and close country with large population. Many people were jobless,Some people were starving, the social situation was bad. But since China started open and allow the foreign investment came in. Things changed, the economy grows fast.
Don’t be scared at the foreign investments, They are bringing good things inside the country. not just the money and job opportunities, but also advanced technogy, better manmagement, success expeirence, and also attitude to work.
We were used to be scared when

  43. We were used to be scared when Japanese came in, American Came in, Korean Came in at the beginning of our openning to the world. But soon we realised it is good opportunity to learn from them, We beleieved that one day we can take it over.

Now there are no Japanese TV factories in China, there are all replaced by Chinese factories. But before we even don’t know how to make a TV set, All the TV market was hold by Japanese. Before all the car factories in China were owned by foreigners like Japanese, German, Ameircan. But now we have our own made cars.

So my Zambia friends, wake up. The foreign investments is not the fault. The thing is that you must be ready to take it over anytime.

  44. CLASSIC NOVEL TO BE EDITED BY #65.Anonymous

It is in the year 2100, a century since the Government of Republic of Zambia gave away land, rivers, minerals, public companies and its people all in the name of foreign investment. The sons of the Chinese and Indian nationals have now multiplied exceeding the onwers of the land. They own all the wealth, power, education, water and women too.

Independence has now become meaningless to the majority of the People. The efforts of our fore fathers 150 years ago all washed down..A new struggle has now emerged to restore the dignity of our people. Will it be easy?

  45. An insight to the possibilities of what life will be 100 years from now if no one stops the striping of Zambian’s wealth all in the pretext of investments.

The question is, can MMD be trusted at this rate they are going??????? The fate is in your hands ladies & gentlemen!!!

  46. Bloggers we need to be clear where we stand, one moment we are advocating for local investor empowerment the other moment we are agreeing with the Govt not to bail out local investors such as Zambian Airways. We need to be very clear on what we are supporting whether it is the foreign investors e.g Chinese, Indians, Nigerians etc or the local Zambian investors.

  47. #76 ba annonymous, bwinofye baklamba. Awe kuti twaeba imwe ati muleba steady.imwe mulimfumu.ndepapafye ifyo pipos ilechefya umuchoncholi. So bane twilabepana umuchoncholi mu bad.

  48. i remember in botswana utumachocholi who came on building projects, started selling vicks and mutototo on the streets.

  49. This is good indicator sign development and a positively developing country , provided there are good investment regulatory laws there is no need to fear .Who knows where salvation for africa will come from .

  50. Why can’t the ZED Govt., impose a law compelling these investors to partner with Zambias. whilst we need foreign direct investiment, We stiii need to have shares as a golden security check and control. Thats why currently the investors flee without anyone persuing them, because of laxity in our investment laws.Maybe the high offices are corrupted hence dont mind.

  51. Yaba yakoselako pa Zed. More externalization of our wealth due to profits wholesome extenalisation using our resources to enrich them.

  52. I think the reason is because the chinese have to distance themselves from Zimbabwe, while the international community is watching. So to keep entering Southern Africa, Zambia is becoming ideal. They have probably seen that they will not get anywhere in Zimbabwe, and so its Zambia they pick. We need to very carefull with the cunning chinese and keep our demands on top priority.

Game parks need to remain national property.

We also need to watch what the chinese are brining into our country. They can easily start dumping toxic waste from china.

    One Zambia One Nation.
    Zambia, my beloved country.

  53. In fact Legacy Holdings had only tendered for 2 ha of land. The rest of 198 ha was supposed to be given by ZAWA and 9 Mio. US-Dollars were supposed to be paid by Legacy. Then came opposition from environmentalists, people of Livingstone, Ian Manning. International tour operators threatened to boycott all Legacy Hotels worldwide. The park and the falls were almost losing their heritage status given by UNESCO. Then Legacy was not allowed to build the cottages as well as the golf course and permission was given only to put up 2 hotels. Later this permission was also revoked by the then Tourism Minister.
Why was the land offered to chinese investors now? Does it mean Legacy is not interested in

  54. Before the chinese build and run a hotel in Zambia, tell me which hotel they are running in other countries. what demands have they met which legacy failed to meet? Watch out for cuts and dogs being cooked in the chinese hotel. joint partnership should be a requirement for anyone to do a major business in Zambia. let us ask Bob in Harare to give us some tips so that we will avoid selling our mother land.

  55. Let them leave the flora and fauna alone in the PARK or Close by!!

why dont they always want to build in the parks not outside?

There is alot of space in STONE…. stone is not MOSI O TUNYA!!!

No wonder there are buses and cars to ferry people!!

Do not disturb the park please!!! Its not a ZOO or a Botanical Garden

  56. I am afraid!! Very afraid!!!

    Favor no one!!!

Let laws and rules be followed!!!

Infact we do not need hotels close by… Whats needed is the mighty and formidable… Dont touch it!!!

    FALLS

  57. Our Mosi-O-Tunya and its surrounding areas need to be protected from the chinese. It is a scary development. Keep them out of our everlasting resource. WE shall petition brothers and sisters.

  58. If you saw the paper today you will notice that there is a problem between ZAWA and Legacy. The minister of Tourism was clear in stating that it was not correct to show land to chinese investors which is still in possession of Legacy. Lets see how this saga continues.

  59. No Chinese people please! The very wildlife is what they will be serving. Recently two Chinese in China were caught for killing a Panda for its meat and parts and may face the death penalty. Was it last year they caught a Chinese man eating wild dogs and found a few dad ones? No!! Keep these ruthless people away form National Parks. They are in it for the bigger things. Tusks, rhino horn, lion bones and anything they believe has medicinal purposes. Please keep them away. World wide they are perceived as crooks and no one enjoys doing business with them. It’s the end of our animals if we allow this. First of all our trees will be all gone before we know it and even our precious grass and soil. These people leave nothing behind. They may even start eating people and serving them as food.
