Parliament heard today that 2,221 tourists visited late David Livingstone’s historical site in Serenje district in Central province from 2001 to 2008.

Tourism, Environment and Natural resources Deputy Minister Todd Chilembo said out of this number, 1,380 foreign tourists visited the site while only 841 Zambians toured the site.

Mr Chilembo said out of the number, 400 were Africans, 584 Europeans, 146 were from North America, Asia 47 and 203 were unidentified number of tourists, respectively.

He told the house that in 2001, 217 tourists visited the site, 2002 (255), 2003 (130), 2004 (240), 2005 (331), 2006(313) 2007 (610) and last year 225.

Mr. Chilembo was responding to a question by Bahati

However, in 2005 and 2007, Zambians toured the site in large numbers due to a number of government initiatives in the tourist capital Livingstone at the Victoria Falls.

And Tourism, environment and Natural resources Minister Catherine Naumgala urged Zambians to take keen interests in touring historical sites in the country.

Ms. Numugala further requested MPs not to leave the issue of touring to non-Zambians but it should start with themselves to promote the tourism sector.

“I urge you to be tourists in your own country. Tourism has been seen as a preserve of a few elite. i would like to urge this august House to take keen interest in touring their own sites in Zambia,” Ms. Namugala said.

So this is correlating well with the MMD 2 of late President LP Mwanawasa. It is an interesting achievement for the “New Deal” MMD GRZ.
By the way, what the President RB Banda MMD GRZ called, if someone knows this data? Is it a “New Deal” MMD GRZ too like the late LP Mwanawasa one, since Im informed that the LP Mwanawasa legacy is continuing although clearly the Foreign Policy has changed over Zimbabwe and the US of Africa issues with the Home Policy having shaked in the corruption stance?

  3. #17 Its where Livinstone’s intestines and heart were buried before being embalmed and ‘shipped’ to Great Britain (Whatever was graet about it ) Zimbos means Zim zim fellas. Got the name from one Blogger. You know, there are some names that are recognised by genuine and frequent blogger e.g NS, Presido, Rudolf the Red Nose and Zimbos !

  4. Gentlepeople, these statistics are not at all impressive. It is an average of less than one person per day for the last seven years. Owe lelo ee.

  5. I bet the brothels in Lusaka have seen more foreigners that DVLIvingstone’s tomb. I frankly will never set foot there because corpse worshipping isn’t my thing

  6. Dear LT
As a country we cant be proud of such an insignificant figure of 2,221 in 7-8 years. As a coutry we must promote our tourism industry if we have to beat other countries in the subregion.
To me that figure is shameful.

  7. For a period of more than 6 years only 2221 tourist visiting the site? There is need of promoting tourism in zambia. The problem is we promote it with our mouths in front of the microphone so that we can be seen on TV or newspaper.I have been here in country with people who can spend on travelling to just see such things David.L site.Yet I have never seen an advertisement of any ofour tourist attraction sites. Not even one.I watch TV ALOT AND I read newspapers.
We have the zambian embassy here.Even in the embassy I have not seen any picture expressing zambias beauty. Why wont we learn from Egyptians who advertise the sun on BBC site as though the sun is found only in their country.

  8. From #27 cont. LET US ADVERTISE OUR TOURISM ON INTERNATIONAL LEVEL.
ADVERTISE ON THOSE BIG WEBSITES LIKE THE BBC,CNN AND OTHERS.IN THOSE INFLUENCIAL MAGAZINES,NEWS JOURNALS,NEWS PAPERS AND SO FORTH AND SO FORTH. SENDING THOSE MUSICIANS TO EUROPE TO SING ON OPEN AIR DOESNT DO MUCH IF DOES ANYTHING AT ALL. TOURISTS IN THEIR HOME COUNTRIES ARE NOT TOURISTS,THEY ARE BUSINESS PEOPLE AND TOO BUSY TO GO AND WATCH BLACK MUNTU OR SAKALA BROTHERS SINGING.THESE CAN ONLY BE COMUNICATED TO THROUGH OFFICIAL CHANNELS. DO OMETHING!!!!!!
2221 MUST BE THE # OF TOURISTS PER DAY ,PER WEEK IF THINGS ARE NOT WELL!!!!!
    The Law firm
    Upcoming President

  9. I thought Mr Todd Chilembo is now deputy minister of Justice? Is this article accurate by refering to him as deputy minister of tourism or was he speaking as a former deputy minister of tourism? Ba LT what is going on? Too much copy and paste ba LT.

    On a serious note

We all abroad can do something to support Tourism in our mother Zambia. Spread the news to the few we know and they will tell others. Zambia is beautiful.

  13. Maybe if the roads were better, the tourists who do come to Zambia might be able to get to see some of the country.

  14. BRUDER L
Does the number include the local pipo who live ku livingstone.

I dont see what the exitment is all about , the number is too little in 7 or 8 years

  15. Parliament heard today that 2,221 tourists visited late David Livingstone’s historical site in Serenje district in Central province from 2001 to 2008.

    Whats the fuss ?

    Its not that many pipo,

  16. Zambian missions abroad are not selling the country,The sites are not attractive, roads are impassable and locals have to visit and promote tourism and we dont have our nation airline. **==

  17. Bruder (No.1) You say that Livingstone is bringing money to Zambia? Perhaps so. But trully I say unto theee, whatever money comes in returns to South Africa, since the major hotels are owned by South Africans [except for the few dirty brothels called guest houses!] and the tourists to Livingi, pay in Jo’burg before departure. No serious income accrues to Livingi town. The roads are dirty, potholed, while the buildings are filthy. Prostitutes, too, go hungry as the forex market is too small to reach them. Most tourists remain in the hotels as there is no serious entertainment centre in town. The few such centres there may be all belong to South Africans.

  18. 2,221 thats 227.6 a year, 23 a month and 0.77 day and an entire minister is wasting his and our time dwelling on such statistics? Come on!!!

  19. People, this site is located over 300km from Lusaka, it is about 20km from the Tuta road, the road is earth mostly. So, for tourist to get there is really a hustle. Maybe, the tour operators should include it as part of their circuit, maybe then the numbers would increase. For now [-(:-w
