ZACCI tells Govt to stop blacklisting companies through the media

Share

Zambia Association Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) has appealed to government to stop blacklisting companies from conducting business with it through public statements.

In a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today, ZACCI board chairperson Hanson Sindowe advised government to write to the affected companies before making public statements.

Mr. Sindowe said last year, the more than 40 contractors that were blacklisted through a public statement had not been formally contacted by the government .

He added that the trend had also eroded the confidence in the affected companies from the financial lending institutions making it difficult for them to obtain bonds.

Mr. Sindowe said there was need for government to effectively communicate with the affected companies.

He said this would help the aggrieved contractors to seek redress if need be unlike the current situation where some contractors could have been blacklisted maliciously without any evidence being presented from the government

Mr. Sindowe said the blacklisting process had affected the commencement of some projects due to insufficient capacity of the remaining contractors thereby forcing the government to engage the foreign contractors who were too costly for the nation

Mr. Sindowe however said that the association was aware that some contractors’ performance was below acceptable standards while others took long to complete their works.

He said ZACCI did not condone shoddy works or delay in completion projects as this resulted in loss of tax payers’ money and increased costs.

  1. “In a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today, ZACCI board chairperson Hanson Sindowe advised govt to write to the affected companies before making public statements.” So would publishing after writing to such companies mean banks will still have confidence in them? “Mr. Sindowe said the blacklisting process had affected the commencement of some projects due to insufficient capacity of the remaining contractors thereby forcing the govt to engage foreign contractors who were too costly for the nation”. It’s okey for as long as a good job is done. Why should govt spend money on same piece of road year-in-year-out. I’d not mind single-sourcing Phoenix on roads, for example.

  2. MR SINDOWE,NUFF RESPECT TO YOUR STATURE AND QUALIFICATIONS.,BUT A COMPANY PROVIDING SHODDY SERVISES SHOULD BE EXPOSED SO THAT EVERY ONE KNOWS.SUPPOSE I WANT TO CONSTRUCT A 10 STOREY HOTEL AND I HIRE ONE OF THOSE SHODDY CONTRUCTORS YOU ARE PURPORTING TO PROTECT.AND THE GUY PUTS UP SOMETHING THAT CRUMBLES IN THE MIDST OF THE NIGHT WHEN PEOPLE ARE DEEEP IN THEIR SLEEP SOME IN PYJAMAS SOME IN THEIR BIRTH SUITS.WOULD YOU REGRET HAVING NOT EXPOSED THE CROOK.THESE CONTRACTORS DO NOT PUT UP SHODDY WORKS BECAUSE OF NOT BEEN QUALIFIED NO,IT’S BECAUSE THEY ARE GREED.THEY WANT TO LEAD A POSH LIFE BEFOR THEY EVEN FINE THE PROJECT OF A CLIENT IN THE END THEY START OPERATING ON A SHOESTRING BUDGET EVEN…

  3. The Zambian contractors are to blame and not government. Infact government should continue to expose fake contractors.

  4. Expose Expose Expose the fake ones. No Cheats in Business. It is the duty of every institution to expose the misconduct of any company that is paid by the tax payers money. Well done Government for using the media. Please continue with the good work.

  5. The job of the government is to expose and prosecute these unscrupulous companies whose aim is to make a fast buck. Mr Sindowe’s organisation is to maintain a list of good companies and not lobby government on protecting corrupt merchants.

  6. well said guys, infact they shud appear in all electronic and print media so that pipo’s resources as well public resources are protected from shoddy works done by some these tuntemba companies.instead the said director shud advise his members to do business in more humane way and not tricking the citizenry.

  7. Just blacklist them! Media or otherwise. Whats the difference? Shoddy work amounts to theft. Just go ahead and blacklist them. I just wish we could blacklist our Head of State also!
