Zambia Laugh In Draw Drama On The Nile

Share

Zambia grinded out to a dramatic 1-1 draw away against Egypt to leave Group C open in the early stages of the 2010 World/Africa Cup qualifiers even after match day one.

Missed sitters, a stunning disallowed goal and a mini fist-fight added to the plot in Cairo in a match that blew hot and cold for most parts.

However, Herve Renards men’s held their own against arch-nemesis led by live-wire midfielder Felix Katongo who fueled Zambia’s surge upfront and could have been ahead within the opening 10 minute had Jacob Mulenga not fluffed on a God-sent sitter.

Resolute Zambia’s defence was breached in the 28th minute when striker Amr Zaki slid in the ball with both feet on the blind side of defender Nyambe Mulenga.

Katongo continued to inspire but poor passing, a little bit of selfishness from him and a fuse-less attack were the hallmarks of Zambia’s first half performance.

Zambia’s spirited play against the African champions was rewarded in the 56 minute when defender Francis Kasonde scored a trademark header from a headed pass from Chris Katongo.

The subdued Chris Katongo could have got another one for Zambia a minute but his curling shot from a tight angle was parried for safety first by Essam El Hadary with the tip of his gloves for the ball to sail out for a corner.

Egypt will feel a little hard done by Malian referee  Koman Coulibaly who ruled out a stunning goal from Africa’s best player Mohamed Aboutrika after benefiting from a Ahmed “Mido” Hossam pass.

Late substitute Aboutrika unlucky streak continued a couple of minutes later when he’s second shot from point-blank-range was also wasted.

Then mayhem ensued with five minutes left to play following some confusion over who between Rainford Kalaba and Chris Katongo was leaving the pitch.

Egypt, notorious for delaying tactics at the death when all is well, didn’t see the funny side of being given a dose of their own medicine as Mido picked on and shaved tiny Kalaba before a free-a minute-long for-all ensued before commonsense reigned.

With the draw, Egypt were the biggest losers at home after failing to beat Zambia for a second successive time as the latter head to a June 6 date at Konkola against Rwanda.

Zambia and Egypt share top spot on 1 point each while Algeria and Rwanda too have 1 point but the top two who played today share top summit courtesy of a better goal difference.

  1. Way to go baiche, with this kind of performance we shall all come to see you in SA.
I was here in 1998 when Egypt wired us 4-0, somewhere in West Africa, after we had wired them 3-1 at SA 1996.

So I was sceptical, that being Cairo we would receive the same treatment. But you have proved me wrong. because 1-1 in Cairo is as good as 1-0 for us, Iyee!! Iyee!! Iyee!!, lets not make the same mistake our under 20 made with the same nemesis.
Congratulations, Mwabombembeni, baiche. GOD Bless You..

  2. That was Drama worth watching, actually had to convince the wife to switch from College basketball she loved the second half, and the scuffle lol, I am Christian got carried away there. Congratulations, I saw a light in our young men that has been long missing, the will to compete.

  3. Great game, for some reason I don’t remember this disallowed goal. Did I miss something? Maybe because I was cheering too loud and was surrounded by Egyptians! Oh well, 1-1. Great result.

  4. There a few things That divide us ,as Zambians. Football does unity us . With Intellectual thinking we have problems…… the towel of babel become a divider ? I hope this does not happen on the pitch among players nor on LT…… Bravo boys

  5. Well done Zambia….Now we must win all the upcoming games because this is a very tough group…The coach deserves a pat on the back

  6. well done boys. continue with this spirit. that being said work extra hard cause this time the pionts are open. whoever wins the next game goes. hence we expect no lose please make us more happier than ever. lets get what is ours, this africa cup belongs to us no one can beat us if we strive.

  7. The fascinating thing about this piece is the ‘broken english’, to use a Zambian expression. The heading is clearly meant to convey the idea that ’twasekelamo muli ka duraw’. The same does not compute into English both at the conceptual or literary level. It was equally painful to read how Egypt is ‘notorious for delaying tactics at the death’ or about the drama of ‘a free-a minute-long for-all’. These are the pitfalls of thinking in one tongue and speaking in another. Not pretty all. It is further proof of why we need to develop our own langauge for which we can all be proud and feel relaxed about. Establishment of a National Langauge Commission/Conference seems in order.

  8. Great Goal and equalizer but the media is not reporting the same thing as who scored the gaol. BBC says its Dennise Banda LT says it is Francis Kasonde on some other blogers they say its J.Mulenga and another say Mayuka. Can FAZ ensure that names are put on the Jerseys players ware to avoid misleading goal getters and scorers.

  9. Congratulations Herve and the Chipolopolo lads for executing a tactically superior game plan than Egypt. From now onwards, the destiny of the road to SA 2010 WC lies in our hands.

  10. Herve, congratulations on the work done with the boys. Boys, you have made us proud. Don’t relax though. Practice even more than you did for the game with Egypt and you are guaranteed to excel.Love you!!

  11. Congratulation to the Zambian Bullets and our Frenchman HR.Good job and let us move forward.

LUITUMEZI MICAHA KWA MBOLA YENDE NENI NAHANA KULI MWENDI LUKA PALELWA KONO
    AAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MWA LAHA LULI.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ZAMBIA KI SIPOLOPOLO!!!!!!!!!!!!

    MAWI MAWI MAWI MAWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. I said it last Friday that when you write off our boys, they rise to the occasion. That 1-1 draw is as good as a win for Zambia especially playing away to the defending champions of Africa. Those who thought the draw against Egypt at the Africa Cup was a fluke should be convinced now. I can bet we will wire those chaps at Konkola Stadium. In Herve Renard, we have a great tactician. He has acquitted himeself well since taking over amid a lot of talk about his qualifications or lack thereof. He has brought back that fighting spirit in our boys, the deisre to win. WHAT CAN ONE SAY? CONGRATULATIONS BOYS AND BRAVO MONSIEUR RENARD. TU EST TRES MAGNIFIGQUE! NE CHANGE PAS L’EQUIPE QUI GAGNE….

  13. Yes……..Good work done guys…This silences the critics who made bad comments about our team…These guys did it and we had faith that anything was possible in Egypt and i hope those freinds who said bad stuff about our our team can now shut up and think positively to what is going on..The game was exellent and as i commented last week.Lets rally behind our team…They are doing great thing…Cheers Chipolopolo.Eyeeeeeee!!! Chipoloplo…Eyeeeeeee…Chipolopolo…Ba zed..ba Bola…Ba mwela

  14. Am waiting for bloggers whon like insulting HR and Kalu to come out. Even Mr. Simata Simata you are welcome to evaluate the works kalu and HR. Local clubs are also in strong contention forthe continental cups….. Kasonde is the scorer of the goal and not Banda

  15. Watched the game, first half was like sitting on pins and needles….too much wasted passes, Kalaba was major culprit. Second half, Egypt thought they had the game in the bag and all they had to do was come out of the dressing room. Thier over-confidence was actually their down fall…..but we need to improve our mid-field displays going forward. Otherwise, well done boys, most gave us a snow balls chance in hell!

  16. Good start…tatulefwaya poor finishing nomba…we need to whoop da adda chaps home n away…& we jus gatt gun down down da pharaohs in Chiliz!!!

  17. I feel there’s need to comment about the chock hold of our player by that THUG in the name of Mohammed Shawki. I think whether we gained a point at their place or not we need to complain about players bringing WWE in soccer. If you look at the picture, all Zambian players were look up to the ref to stop these thugs. FIFA must protect our young men from such unprofessional behavior. Our boys are there to play soccer and it is always the other teams that want to use thuggery behavior ti intimidate our team. I really don’t like the chock hold on our player. Thank Zambia for delivering in the midst of such animal behavior.

  18. #25 BABY C : I thought you had said we would be massacred? Waona ka. Never lose hope mama. Watch what happens to Rwanda now when they come here.

  19. Congratulations boyz,no regrets of leaving Tana behind otherwise it wud have been otherwise.1-1 is as good as 1-0 to the pharaohs as it is a strong team.Mwabombeni baiche.Thumbs up and kip up with the same.Egypt was rough mwee….All the same,u hav done us proud(U WILL NEVER WALK ALONE) heehhehehe

  20. Moze, i didnt say that…. i said hope they wont be massacred !! i was a good girl on friday, i never said anything negative.

  21. Good perfomance for Chipolopolo boys. Let the team work hard so that we can correct maximum points against Rwanda and Tunisia at Konkola Stadium in June.

  22. Ba LT naimwe, awaiting moderation kwati nintukana..!!! benifye bwino, just show my comments as is. Thats why we are now confusing you with ba shu-shu-shu, fyakale ifyo, fya ya na UNIP. Otherwise twalaleka uku lembako, atase!!

  23. we get points from Rwanda and Algeria, (not Tunisia) we just need another away point and get 9 points at home. lets go zed! lets go!!!

  24. Luapula fish, we dont insult, we just say the truth! If Zambia was a better side, they could have beaten the pharaohs at their own turf! But we also give credit were its due! they put up a spirited fight especially in the seconf half!

  25. Baby C- Ok, i understand mama. Manje i need your comments on the thread yama pictures, pantu that kaputula,…..awe mama!!

  26. I Liked the commitment the Guys displayed, They deserved that result peharps even a win, towards the end we started playing for a draw otherwise we would have scored coz Egypt were concetrating on attack and there defence was exposed

  27. MAKOLOKOTOOTO (congrats), splended play for our sipolopolo, chipolopolo, vipolopolo, kipolopolo……bipolopolo, I had all the belief that a positive result would come out of Egypt. Now Gov/Faz must come up with a tantative plan to camp the national team for atleast three weeks out of the country, and one week withen before Rwanda and Algeria come to Konkola, this will give the boys enough time to cordinate and know each other well. Apart from that Gov/Faz should start sourcing for funds to build houses and purchase a car for each player/technical team who will take part in qualifying to WC2010 and taking part at the tornament .MOTIVATION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS. Next comment for outlook.

  28. Admittebly, the Pharaohs are all a bunch of tired legs. We will wire and burry them at Konkola. That will also be done to Algeria and little Rwanda. I can smell FIFA world cup maiden appearance for Chipolopolo. We will wire England at the world cup.

  29. Thanx guys for the result, especially for the second half in the first half we were chasing shodows. Ba ZNBC be serious, during news you said you were not going to televise the game I almost missed it.

  30. Well done ba Zambia! I think this coach really has something. I was doubting him initially. Keep up the good work Herve Renard – with your shorts. Now Ba Luapula Fish how does Great Kalu come in on this win? When something is wrong we shall comment on it as such and the same we shall do on something positive like this win. SOOHH?

  31. Awe these boyse could have done better except HR is to blame look at the substitutes he made very poor ones he shud have substituted jacob and replace with singuluma or Mayuka 2de it wud hv been zambia 3-1 Egypt

  32. I only hope we will not get to mathematics again, for us to qualify to the world cup. The world cup is in our hands to loose, we are the team that has two consecutive home games. Check this:ZAMBIA EGYPT
    06/06/O9 Rwanda (H) 07/06/09 Algeria (A)
    20/06/09 Algeria (H) 21/06/09 Rwanda (H)
    05/09/09 Algeria (A) 06/09/09 Rwanda (A)
    OCT /09 Rwanda (A) Oct/09 Algeria (H)
    Dec/09 Egypt (H) Dec/09 Zambia (A)

  33. Dr Bills, there a lot of factors, the coach had Jacob, he is tall, strong, fast. He wanted a strong guy in front, who could take them on. I don’t think Mayuka, Singuluma, can play alone upfront.

  34. Congrats Ba Zed! I hope some of the bloggers on this site can now turn the harsh crticism of our beloved team into voices of support. It would be childish of me to name them because they know themselves. Viva Zambia Viva! Nomba kwashala ukusepa amakula Rwanda na Algeria ba pusshi! Heard a fight also ensued towards the end, i hope twali ba pona bafika%a! hahahahaha

  35. #50- Mathematics is an obvious case! You ve already forgotten because of a ka draw in Cairo…. One more thing… dont underestimate Rwanda, they can cause an upset!

  36. 15, Seasoned Soccer fan-USA, the goal scorer for Zambia was Francis Kasonde a defender. The scored by heading a ball from Dennis Banda that came from a Chris Katonga cross.

On BBC and others, who would you rather believe on Zambia news issues ZNBC and Times of Zambia or BBC? On bloggers, some of them are out of touch with reality at home, but a number of us contact home almost every now and then to get updates on what is going on there. And so, take me at at words for I always try hard to verify details before I give them to you.

  37. Egyptian blog post match comments: ” Honestly we didn’t deserve anything more than this shocking draw against Zambia in front of a packed Cairo stadium; we didn’t present what could earn us the three points but on the other hand the Zambian team deserves all respect as they took the game seriously and played by their abilities with very high spirit. We know that our biggest rival in this group is the Zambian team not Algeria and our match with them there will be crucial; they showed that they aren’t a weak team but they are a well organized group of players with strong mentality and great tactical abilities.”

  38. The remaining games are actually like this:ZAMBIA / EGYPT
    06/06/O9 Rwanda (H) 07/06/09 Algeria (A)
    20/06/09 Algeria (H) 21/06/09 Rwanda (H)
    05/09/09 Algeria (A) 06/09/09 Rwanda (A)
    10/10/09 Egypt (H) 10/10/09 Zambia (A)
    14/11/09 Rwanda (A) 14/09/09 Algeria (H)

  39. Well done boys. Egypt has always struggled aganist us.We are also the only team that earned a point from them at the last AFCON. But all the same good show …

  40. well done boys, atleast you hoped me prove these critics like the so called baby c wrong.guess they got know option but to join us in supporting you.

  41. Fellow bloggers am in a big problem.Of late am having frequent heads and there are some sores on my private part. What really could be the problem with am scared and worried,am just in tears help me please.

  42. #53 Baby C, why are you so negative towards Ba Zanbia. I know you have lost a lot of your love for our soccer team, and most of us did especially when South Africa hammered us 3nil sometime in the 90’s. But given our meagre resources we are trying to be up there amongst the best so lets at least try to be positive. When we qualify i’ll buy the beer 4 us to celebrate and if we dont i will still buy the booze so cheer up lady sometimes a “ka” draw is a win considering whom you are playing against. Rwanda is no walk over but ask the Liverpool fans in the Kop, us supporters provide the extra man so lets support the boys my dear.

  43. Congrats guyz da technical bench inlusive, now we need to maximise on the home games and be as stubbone as we were against Egypyt when face Rwanda & Algeria.Chipolopolo here we come, with good practice and discipline we can definitely make it.

  44. #61 – You are a problem. To begin with, how can you have many heads? Naupena? Secondly, i would strongly advise that you take #63’s advice seriously. It can save your life!

  45. Ghost Rider its unfortunate that you have no mercy and you tell me that.I have grown up a well behaved person,i did that once.Thats why am here to seek help because this is the first time such a thing is happening to me.

  46. Toko , holier than thou???? stop playing innocent! Only last week frday, you said a lot of negative things about Zambia. Now that the boys put up a splendid perfomace, you want to change camps…. you ve suprised me! Ypu are not rootedman! stick to what you know!

  47. #66 Ba Moze, forget chi #61. He is fake. All he is putting up is imaginery. Libange lilebomba. He has smoked. Pa blog ya game, him is yapping ma rubbish.

  48. Guys i meant to say frequent headaches, not many heads.Anywa its alright Maestro has adviced me on what to do.I thought i had friends on LT but i was wrong.Am talking about my life here and you guys make funny of that.I understand it happens.Even Moze surely? Am really suprised, its not everyone who gets sick because of misbehaving.Only God knows, bye.

  49. Baby c, you are really getting on my nerves! Indeed you were so negative concerning our national team last week. What do you say no? My advise, sing ba zambia chipolopolo ba zambia chipolopolo. The result is very satisfying. MERCI MONSIEUR RENARD on ne peut pas réver d’un meilleur coach que vous. Bravo l’equipe zambien we will always be there supporting you no matter what. Salut à tous

  50. #61 is not in his senses, let him go to the hospital. #43 how sure are you that our gvt can buy cars and houses 4 our team even if they have money, we have some selfish leaders who are very corrupt, may be money is there but they first want to make their pockets heavy. our coach should now try sinkala on the mid. CONGRATES CHIPOLOPOLO……………………….

  51. “Dr Bills, there a lot of factors, the coach had Jacob, he is tall, strong, fast. He wanted a strong guy in front, who could take them on. I don’t think Mayuka, Singuluma, can play alone upfront.”

That is true, but there’s other players he would have tested for this game who would have done a better job than Jacob Mulenga. He should have given James Chamanga a chance.

  52. #69 – Baby C, even if we won the world cup i wudnt ko u names but you know as well as i do that we cant win the world cup so you are being sarcastic here. It sounds as though you are so annoyed with the Chipolopolo, nothing they achieve will ever please you. Reaching the world is a big achievemnt for any country even if they dont win it. But nipase number yako so that instead of calling you names i can call you for a beer.

  53. Ba Moze bwanji! It seems as though Lusaka City alimuchetekela sana as a friend because he only mentions your name ati “Even Moze sure” kapena muzibana?? Its good alaila muboyz coz chizungu chake chiyofya mwe. Ba kaponya ba pezeka bwanji pa America???

  54. Lets do a double on Rwanda and Algeria and we can start looking for tickets for SA 2010

    2010 here we come

  55. Abena Ghostrider, Ndi bwino mani. Bene Lusaka city ba luvyanya. Khani ya so, should be addressed to a particular person, not openly like that. Thats why bantu bonse badabwa.

  56. Ni ba ZAmbia muliko? Bena kuba kali bafunya am draw, kumakula balalusa 1 – 0. Pa last ati ni game efyo yaba! Mashilu!

  57. Lets put this GAME as gone and approach the next one as another game. History has shown that we carry this hang over of victory too long.

  58. Cheeky – Ba Zambia makula , if they are not, they will reach the world cup without any difficulties. Ghost Rider – am not being sarcastic # 82 Gametime 12 – LT is the last place i would ever seek attention from! No more Baby C, this, Baby C that… No one will ever change the way i feel about the Zambia national team!

  59. Baby C, ah ah, ya shani iyo mama? Why the ranting pa blogg? Take it easy mama. Thats not like you, ka. Nikusulako vinangu. Waziba mama? Teka bola panshi. Uzaluvyanya pa last.

  60. Well done lads. Thumbsup to the Coaching Bench. I was extremely upset with the Thuggery exhibited by ssome Egyptian players during during the minute-long confussion. I recall a simular incident occured during the 3-1 bashing of RSA. Can FAZ please lodge a complaint to CAF/FIFA. We are capable of being better soccer thugs but it’s not in line with the spirit of sport. FAZ ACT NOW!!

  61. “Ona mami” to Renard and his boys.Congrates boys. You are realy a good coach, jst like i thot you didnt include I .Chansa in the starting 11 though i would have loved to see our CHAN heroes,Singuluma and Sakuwaha.Plse include them in the home fixtures.

  62. Shame on everyone that condemed the preparation of our national team. The six zero win against pirates paid off yesterday,if anyone can just go back to last week’s comment I passed over the six zero win against pirates,I actually predicted a 1all draw or a win by 1 – 0.Southafrica is just in our back yard am serving for that dont know about you guyz, coz this world cup zambia is definately going.

  63. Well done CHIPOLOPOLO lets just make sure if we have the wins at home especially the two in June then we can say our eyes are firmly on 2010. We have the chance lets give it our best! Baby C dont worry in the words of marley everything is gonna be alright!

  64. If a draw is worth celebrating, then mediocrity has taken over in Zambian sport. Sorry guys, Zambia will be walloped not less than 2-0 in Lusaka. Keep this posting for reference.

  65. Kamuzu Band and Baby C….Know nothing about soccer, it wasn’t just a draw (it was a draw on Egypt’s own soil). Remember Egypt is the best team in Africa, its not like it was a draw against Seychelles. They failed to beat us on their own turf, I bet they understand how difficult it is going to be to beat us at home. Besides if we hold them to a goalless draw at home, then will have the advantage because of the away goal.

  66. #77, if we as citizens demand from the Goverment to provide what is due to the team and other needs for all citizens, everything is possible. I remember, how in Ghana, was it?, when they promised the team some kind of incertives, their purformance improved and even qualified to the last world cup. The same can be done here, Am one strong believer in Motivation as a key to success..Now coming to negative comments from BABY C !, I believe mama C has a right to say what she wants, the only thing we should ask mama C to do for us is to give Suggestions on how the team can improve. BABY C take Ghostrider’s advice, you are maybe stressed and need to go places to refresh.4 me Nizambia support..iye

  67. point of correction baby c,toka & toko r 2 different pipo, toko ws the 1 criticising our boys and toka is the 1 criticising pipo like you for changing goal posts.once again if u cant beat us please join us in supporting our boys.

  68. 100 (Game time 12):
Since I and Baby C don’t know soccer, all I can say is wait and see. Let’s talk again after the return game in Lusaka! I repeat: Zambia will be severely destroyed in Lusaka (or wherever the game will be played).

  69. 106 (Kamuzu Banda)
Its the comments that you make that lead me to believe that you know nothing about soccer. what do you mean by this statement “Zambia will be severely destroyed in Lusaka”, I mean is that a prediction or you’re suggesting that Zambia will not be able to pull another draw or an upset? If you knew something about soccer you would not make such a comment. I’ll tell you this though there’s a possibility that Zambia might be severely destroyed in Lusaka, but you also have to understand that, that is going to depend on how well the Zambia national soccer team will prepare for that match. Remember it’s a long way to go so don’t jump to conclusions just yet.

  70. Dear People,
I am Egyptian, , I wish you all the best. Your team was very good and you can be proud of it. I hope that the best team in the group, whether Egypt, Zambia, Algeria or Rwanda at the end go to South Africa and represents us as Africans, very well.
Greetings to the people of Zambi

  71. Okay 101 (Game 12). Let’s agree to disagree. My point is that I predict (unfortunately English is a second language for me) that Zambia will be beaten by Egypt in the return game. My prediction is that the goal line will be 2+ goals in favour of Egypt against 0 for Zambia. I wish it could be otherwise, but unfortunately…I have no faith in Chipolopolo.
