DEC says Cannabis is most abused drug among the youth

Share

The Drug Enforcement Commission, DEC, says Cannabis remains the most abused drug among youths in the country.

DEC Public Relations Officer, John Nyawali, disclosed that the drug is mostly abused by male youths.

Mr Nyawali told ZANIS in Lusaka that the Commission has also established that the combination of alcohol and cannabis was also rampant among youths in selected parts of the country.

He, however, disclosed that the Commission has in the first quarter of this year managed to counsel and rehabilitate about 64 drug addicts.

Mr Nyawali said DEC, through the Drug Demand Reduction Programme, managed to reach out to over 23, 000 people in different parts of the country to sensitise them on the dangers of drug and substance abuse.

He said the commission was impressed with the positive response it was receiving from the public in an effort to address the problem of substance abuse, which he said, posed a serious threat to human health.

Mr. Nyawali said DEC would remain focused at carrying out sensitization programmes aimed at discouraging drug abuse particularly among the youth.

  1. The question is ,why Cannabis remains the most abused drug among youths in the country? It is the most easily accessible drug and even cultivated freely in some parts of zed.

  2. I beg to differ, I think alcohol is the most abused drug in Zambia, maybe the heading should be “…most abused illegal drug”.

  3. IF THE MOON IS HIGH, SO AM I. IF YOU FEAR TO DIE , SO DO I.

ON A SERIOUS NOTE Cannabis is much more better than liquor!! Worry your minds about the smoking habit of some government officials !! Even RB makes decisions like he is high which is even more harmful to the Zambian economy than the cannabis the youth smoke to make them chill.

  4. Jamaco you’re such a crazy person. Anyway whatever you say, I agree with you. Alcohol though, is the most abused drug in Zambia not cannabis and the DEC needs to clean up the kachasu brewers. Alcohol affects our economy and the people who drink and work for the Zambian government are in the masses, e.g Teachers, nurses, community development workers etc. When you smoke weed, you can work and some people become very energetic while alcohol makes men look like dead animals. If we had to vote, I would ask the DEC to concentrate on eliminating alcohol use more that concentrate on the growth of weed which is also good for the environment because it’s a tree. Its good for the economy because its sold for cash. Ha Ha Ha

  5. True.. Cannabis is harzadous, leads to severe brain damage… and so I hear.. alcohol is an aperitif… .well, for adults only….

  6. ANYTHING done in excess is bad. There is nothing wrong with using the herb especially to meditate. The system just wants to be in control of everything Why can’t we be what we want to be; we want to be free. I n’ I does not abuse the herb I use it to reflect on the goodness and blessings of the Most High Jah who lives within I. Anyway, I n’ I don’t expect to be justified by the laws of men. Right about now I n’ I is going to burn one down. Tell the oppressors if they don’t like my fire to not come around. Jah Rastafari, everliving, ever faithful ever sure. And tomorrow I n’I resume my blessed work as a respectable Software Programmer. Thanks and praises to the Mighty Conquering Lion of Judah…Jah! Rastafari.

  7. I agree with most of you. Alcohol is most harmful than the weed. I know of a friend who was given a prescription to smoke the herb to alleviate the pain due to cancer. All other pain killers couldn’t alleviate the pain.
