Former Mufulira Wanderers and Zambia international midfielder Abraham Lungu is dead.

Lungu’s death was confirmed by Wanderers secretary Rainford Kalaba Snr today who said the ex-midfielder died this afternoon, Friday May 22 at Kitwe Central Hospital after a long illness.

Lungu, 41, had until the time of his death served as assistant at Wanderers and number 2 at Shinde Stadium under his former club mate Allan Kamwanga.

The midfielder retired at the end of the 2005 season to join the coaching bench at Shinde.

Lungu received his last international cap under the late Zambia coach George Mungwa in 2000 against Malawi.

And Kalaba said Lungu’s funeral is being held in Kitwe at house number 950 Kwacha East township and that burial arrangements will be announced later.

Kalaba said Lungu is survived by two children and his death comes three years after his wife passed away.

Meanwhile, Kalaba said Wanderers are due to the bereavement likely to cancel their two division 1 north away games this weekend.

Wanderers were set to travel to Chingola Leopards in a scheduled Week 12 and later face Luanshya United on Monday in a Week 2 game.

  11. Abraham Lungu may your soul rest in peace.
First came to the soccer while playing as a reserve at Nkana. A gifted left footer become well-known when he moved to Nchanga Rangers and established himself firmly in Mufulira at Shinde. I remember him being a good friend to Zifa Nkhoma while both of them were playing at Nchanga. Popularly known as “BANGALA” originally Barnes after the Liverpool great John.

  12. Sad to hear the passing of Abraham Lungu, i remember when he played for Nchanga and then Mighty. I see he was well connected with Kitwe pipo from Race-Power, Nkana East, Buchi, Bulangililo, Kwacha and those good Tarvens we grew up buying chibuku for our parents. Kitwe the best city in Zambia that has produced alot of Zambian soccer players.
