Government vehicle impounded for misuse

Share

Kitwe District Commissioner, (DC) MacDonald Mtine, has impounded a government vehicle which was being abused.

Mr Mtine impounded the light truck registration GRZ 189 BC was carrying blocks for a private contractor to Chipashi Primary School in Kamfinsa constituency.

The DC said the GRZ vehicle was meant for the Keep Zambia Clean and Healthy program in Kafinsa constituency.

Mr Mtine commended the local community who spotted the vehicle and confronted the driver who failed to give the proper explanation over the usage of the government vehicle by a private contractor.

The DC said the papers showed that the blocks were being delivered by Blockman Builders and Contractors Limited to Wilsanga General Contractors and Food Suppliers Limited.

Mr Mtine said he has instructed the police to detain both the driver and the agent of the private contractors to give an explanation as to why the government vehicle was used to do private work instead of doing its intended purpose.

The DC said government would not allow people to frustrate its work by misusing its facilities without proper explanation.

Mr Mtine said he was waiting to hear from the local authority with regard to the usage of the vehicle by the private contractor.

The vehicle is parked at Kitwe Central Police Station.

  1. Withdraw the contract also from this contractor. There is coruuption involved from the office which awarded this contract.

  2. I HAVE BEEN UNDER THE BELIEF THAT THE CONTROLLER OF GOVT TRANSPORT WHO IS REPRESENTED ADEQUATELY IN EVERY PROVINCE IS RESPONSIBLE TO DEAL WITH THE ALLEGED MISUSE OF GOVT VEHICLES. WHEN WAS THE DC KITWE GIVEN THE RESPONSIBILITY TO DEAL WITH SUCH ISSUES??? DONT WASTE OUR TIME BA MTINE PLEASE ASK YOUR APPOINTING AUTHORITIES TO REVIEW YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION.

  3. #6, JEFF MWANZA, even you you have the responsibility to help fight corruption and misuse of govt property!!! Just like what these alert private citizens did, I would hope you do the same when you see someone abusing govt property which, in essence, is your property as a taxpayer. Govt spends millions acquiring these equipment meant to benefit everybody, and not private individuals. Govt has being edging the public to get involved in fighting corruption and abuse of govt property, and what happened here is a good example of private citizens hearing that call and getting involved. Now you want them to get off the backs of crooks?! It really shouldn’t matter who intervenes, whether it’s the Police, the DC, or private citizens. Bottom line, something needs to be done about such abuses!!!

  4. Mtine atleast this time you have shown responsibility as a politician, that’s the way to go. Not always politicking even when it not necessary. The contract must be terminated and all those involved in this must be dealt with just like they did with Kapoko.

  5. We have the right o use govt vehicles, the bembas say ‘those who work in the field, eat in (from ) the field . so whats yo problem… find your own field.

  6. Why do we ave DCs and Mayors? Zambia will not progress until we start focusing on real issues. Why should a DC be involved in how trucks are used? My advise to anyone is: If you are out of a job, vote for someone who can make sure that you get one. Life is too short to be spent just praising incompetents.

  7. No 7 Jeffy, u must be out of your senses, if u were the DC, where u going to say that it is not my work, let alone the Controlling office see that. that is tax payers money and it is the resposibility of every zambian

  8. Lusaka Times, it is not him who has impounded the truck, he was simply conveying first hand information. Infact you have mentioned that the people confronted the driver who failed to satisfy them with answers. Mr Mtine also should have communicated to the relevant controlling officer this info and then the responsible office would have made the statement. It is clear D.C’s are extra baggage in the running of our affairs. Don’t qoute me wrong, the misuse of the truck is not being supported here, no. Let people work and do their jobs as opposed to having their jobs ( jobs to have and not jobs to do).

  9. We hope mr Mtine did not ask for a lift or did not have intentions of using the truck himself,, after being denied then he decides to be a good man..okay.

  10. Mr. Mtine that is practising “Kapatulula” of the highest order. Why have the same not bin done in Chitambo Constituency where Brand New Chinese made ISuzu vans etc are making rounds day in day out. The vehicle might have bin used may be after getting permission to a controlling officer. The truth of the matter there is no proper control on usage of GRZ motors. That guy was just unfortuanate. The motors were meant for Keep Zambia Clean Campaign but with demise of Levy and sacking of Masebo the whole exercise has crumbled like a building on standing on sand foundation. Be it in Lusaka or else where the vehicles are being used for all sorts of events as long as one gets permission. A close check will tell that the main culprits are ma Bwanas.
