ZAWA loses K272 million from death of 35 Buffaloes

Share

Zambia Wild Life Authority (ZAWA) lost K272 million as a result of the death of thirty five (35) buffaloes in Kafue national park on Monday this week.

The death was as a result of a stampede caused by lions that were chasing after the buffaloes.

During a District Development Committee (DDCC) meeting held at Itezhi-tezhi district council yesterday, area warden Christopher Kaoma said a buffalo costs K2.5 million when sold to a safari hunter.

‘The loss of 35 buffaloes translates into monetary loss of K272 million that could have gone into the coffers of the statutory body,” he said.

And district development coordinating committee has expressed disappointment at the failure by Itezhi-tezhi district veterinary office to promptly respond to the situation when informed about the death of the buffaloes.

The members said that if the veterinary department responded quickly and examined the carcasses on time, ZAWA would have sold that meat and even distribute to local people who would have benefited nutritionally.[quote]

“We are very disappointed that 35 carcasses of buffalo had to rot while floating on the lake without our local veterinary department examine and certify the meat for consumption of the local people. The meat would have benefited ZAWA in monetary terms and people would have benefited nutritionally,” said a Mr. Christopher Kaoma.

And Itezhi-tezhi District Agriculture Coordinator (DACO) Frank Lubasi said it was disappointing that it took foreign veterinary doctors from United Kingdom (World Wide Vet services) to come and ascertain the cause of death when the vet office in Itezhi-tezhi was operational.

He said despite the department having all the necessary equipment including transport, they delayed to get to the scene.

On Monday the thirty five (35) buffaloes were found dead and floating in lake Itezhi-tezhi in the Kafue national park.

  1. I dont believe all the carcasses got rotten. Someone must have a heavy freezer right now ! I smell a buffalo here

  2. #3 There were 109 Buffaloes that died due to stampede while running away from a Pride. ZAWA are not being truthful. Even this DDCC should have noticed this lie!!!!

  3. I don’t enjoy condemning esp LT but kwena guys, you couldn’t calculate… lol.. Made my day, 35 * 2.5 = 272m!

  4. Sad about theBuffaloes…….. okay not really, i went through the calculations in my head and then on my calculator and still could’nt come up with ZMK 272 million! LT made my day! Still lmao! Getting ready to honk!

  5. Damn illiterate warden!! 2.5X35 can never be equal to 272, like it or not, U cant get that even when you are using mode n calculation. No wonder we cant develop in Zambia…

  6. #8 NyC!, Save your heart from heart-break, he’s just a warden… probably thats why he IS a warden. If he was good at math, he’d probably be with you, ku mangalande. Brainiacs like you have run away from Zambia expecting it to develop itself

  7. ZAWA is made up of bipuba. How can you be mourning an act of death or survival in the wild? These deaths were brought about by actions of predators. You cannot insure against that. ZAWA grow up. Do you make it a habit of counting the number of buffaloes that fall prey to lions and how much money you would have realised if they were killed by a trophy hunter?

  8. I don’t think 35 buffaloes can die from a stampade caused by a pride of lions, its not like it is the first in kafue national park that a pride of lions have gone after buffaloes, that is definately not true. I think ZAWA has realised that if word gets out that there is some kind of virus killing the buffaloes, someone will lose thier job so somebody decided to pass the blame onto the lions, how cheap.

  9. This is utter bullocks! If the buffaloes died because of the stampede, its nature trying to cull the numbers. And how can you commercialise comodity you have not invetsed a cent in? More or less a man stumbles on a pile of farm produce that have fallen from the truck and says if the driver had given me this I could have made so much, look now! I have made a loss today? How cheeky is that! Where is this country going kwena? How many of the wild animals die due to desease, floods, prey et al? Due we put numbers on these loses and reflect them on our balance sheets? I really dont know what breed of leadership we have in the country.

  10. Please educate me, how much does Zambia loss as a result of all those innocent ants I step on as I walk (strap) to work?
