No Grade twelve leavers balls – LCC

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has said it will not tolerate the holding of leavers balls for grade twelve school leavers.

Council Assistant Public Relations Manager Mulunda Habeenzu said the council will not tolerate any bar or nightclub in the city to entertain grade twelve school leavers in a bid to stump underage drinking.

Mr Habeenzu said that there is need for concerted efforts in the fight against underage drinking and discouraging leavers balls was one effective way.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the local authority wants stakeholders to participate in fighting underage drinking in the city.

Mr Habeenzu said the council would stop at nothing to ensure that more stakeholders are engaged in fighting the scourge that is threatening the future of the nation.

He warned that bars or nightclubs that would allow grade twelve school leavers to hold their after Examinations functions will be doing so at their own risk because the law will take its course.

Meanwhile Mr. Habeenzu has said the demolishing of illegal bill boards in Lusaka City is an on going exercise.

He said the local authority wants all illegal bill boards to be removed adding that people need to learn to consult with the Council before putting up any bill board.

The Lusaka City Council has been apprehending and closing bars and nightclubs that allow underage patronage in their premises.

  1. Mwilabachinga happiness abaiche! Its a once in a life time thing! Just give guidlines probably. Nishani?

  2. This is a right of passage for School leavers and I believe they are 18yrs old by the time they graduate.

Why doesnt LCC fight corruption instead?

  3. What then is the legal age 18 or 21? They have finished high school/secondary school…bottomline is, they are confirmed adults and they should be treated as adults. The question of drinking in relation to this subject should dwell on responsibilityand not applying some draconian means to punish everyone. When young people finish secondary school, some of them are already over the drinking age….so what gabbage is this?

  4. ….and you think they wont find means to make their own illigal one. Then you were definately never once a teenager. Think of something wiser please

  5. I think this is a good idea. Lusaka nightclubs were infested with underage patrons! Its about time nightclubs were restricted to ADULTS ONLY. Kids should stay home and play video games till they become of age. I am proud of you LCC, keep up the good work.

  6. My home is available for hire for such functions. After all we are in a capitalist economy. What a business opportunity mwebantu.

  7. This won’t go down well with the older guys planning to pounce on drunk and excited grade 12 girls.

  8. This council is full of S.h.i.t! Clubs are open every weekend so these kids will still go there. They don’t have to call it leavers ball for it to be a leavers ball. What you foo.ls need to do is introduce the ID system in Zambia. Let every patron, regardless of how much Ndevu or how big a girls behind is, produce an ID, be it NRC or drivers license! That way all underage patrons will not be allowed into the bars, That way the bar owners will have no one but themselves to blame if you find underage patrons in the bar. And stop putting pressure on the kids you bust them, make sure you shut down the bar itself so that next time the bar owner will not tolerate the kids when they come there. That is the only way you can combat this problem.

  9. READ THIS WITH DEEP AND HEARTFELT CONCERN REALLY. THSE STATISTICS SHWN FRM KASAMA R QUITE ALARMING 4 DE FUTURE GENERATION HONESTLY SPEAKING. OUR POPULATION IS GOING INTO COMPLETE EXTINCTION DAY BY DAY. NOW, MY SUGGEST IS A BIT DIFFERENT FROM THE DACA. I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT 1st BASIC NEEDS MUST BE MADE EASILY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL AND 2nd SUGGEST IS MORE EMPHASIS MUST BE PLACED ON BEHAVOIURAL CHANGE AS OPPOSE 2 MASSIVE CONDOM USE. OUR MORAL UPRIGHTNESS IN ZAMBIA IS CURRENTLY HIGHLY MISPLACED AND AS A RESULT WE HAVE YOUNG PIPO INSULTING OLD ONES, LEADERS INSULTING EACH OTHER, HIGH DEATH RATE MAINLY DUE 2 AVOIDABLE HIV N AIDS DISEASE, CORRUPTION, CHILD LABOUR, UNDER-AGE IN2 LIQUOR TAKE UPS, MARRIAGE BREAK-UPS AND MANY MORE. PLS PLS LET’S CHANGE OUR BEHAVOUR BY STRICTLY ADHERING TO OUR…

  10. Parents should also be held responsible. They should know where their under-age children are.

  11. I agree with #8, screening through IDs could be the solution. The system works very well in developed nations.

  12. ifya ma ID screening ifyo, all the underage children will do is bribe the bouncers, with the levels of poverty in pa zed..

  13. What’s wrong with our country mwebantu??? Instead of LCC focusing on issues of illegal trading of alchol like utojilijili, they are busy wasting their energies on school leavers who are probably 18 years old.

  14. I support LCC coz many young girls are r.a.ped by sugar dadies. Keep it up LCC , let us protect the future leaders.
