Chieftainess Chaiwa appeals to government to allow cropping of animals

Share

Chieftainess Chaiwa of the Goba people in Kafue district has appealed to government to amend the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) Act on Animal/Human conflict.

The Chieftainess said in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today that crocodiles, elephants and hippos are indiscriminately killing people in her area because the ZAWA Act is silent on the cropping of animals.

She saids it is imperative that the Act is changed so that it becomes user-friendly to the people in the lower Zambezi and other affected communities across the country.

Chieftainess Chaiwa expressed fears that the human life will continue to be lost at the hands of the beasts if the situation is unchanged.

She further added that elephants were also damaging crops, resulting in food insecurity in her chiefdom.

Chieftainess Chaiwa appealed to government to resolve the animal/human conflict and safeguard the lives of the people in area.

Meanwhile, Chieftainess Chaiwa has implored government to speed up the construction works of the Chiawa Bridge in Kafue district.

She expressed happiness that Government through the Ministry of Works And Supply would was constructing the Bridge which is expected to be completed by June this year.

  1. Yes, please do allow for the villagers to have acces to meat in this village. Why allow people to starve when they have t-bone steak on four legs in their front yards? Another thing, let them kill the crocs and make handbags, shoes, etc. for sale as an income generating activity. I agree 100% with the chieftainess.:d/

  2. ……and ZAWA is very quick to arrest animal killers but always unconcernerd whenever its the opposite. The Bible is very clear about the relationship between animals and human being….to have dominion over them.

  3. It is a very stu/p.i.d idea to crop Animals in Zambia. The country supposedly has 19 National parks. But this is in name only since most of them have been neglected and poached out. We need a comprehensive and integrated management programme for all national parks. If as claimed Lower Zambezi has an unsustainable elephant population; rather than cropping the elephants we should instead translocate them to other national parks. The 22 400 Km Kafue National Park is more or less empty. There are currently 3000 to 4000 elephants in KNP. This park has a carrying capacity of 60 000 elephants. Nsumbu has a carrying capacity of 8 000 but currently there is less than 10% of that number.
