Former Zambia national soccer team coach Herve Renard talks to reporters

The BBC online reports that Frenchman Herve Renard has ended his stay as the coach of Zambia. The 41-year-old ended his contract with the Chipolopolo on Tuesday with two months remaining on the deal.

The Frenchman quit despite leading the team into their first Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in 14 years.

“Renard handed in his letter of intent to be excused as he stated his desire to pursue other professional interests elsewhere,” Zambia FA (FAZ) spokesman Eric Mwanza said in a statement.

“FAZ and Renard therefore amicably agreed on the way forward.

“In view of this development, FAZ’s consultations and efforts to have him extend his contract have since been suspended.

“Physical trainer Patrice Beaumelle will also not be staying in the job.”

Herve had been linked with several national teams in Africa since leading the Chipolopolo to the last eight of the Cup of Nations in Angola in January.

The Frenchman joined the Chipopolo in 2008 after serving as an assistant to the then Ghana coach Claude Leroy.
He guided the Zambians to an third place finish in the maiden African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Ivory Coast last year.

Herve coached in France, Vietnam, China and England, before teaming up with Le Roy in Ghana.

  1. Too bad, I think he was liked by many Zambians. A German commentator once remarked that he was the “dressman” and “gentleman coach” at the previous Africa Cup of Nations. I, for one wish him good luck…

  2. Good riddance, the young man was becoming too big for Zambia.I am glad he left, we can take stock of what he has achieved and what he has not achieved for Zambia.

  3. I dont think he is/was what he has achieved in Zambia. Luck was with him. A local coach could have achieved more. The FOX destroyed the team before reverting to the Kalusha tutored boys. We can even go further as far as mentioning Simataa. The two deserve praise and not necessarilly the French Fox. I dont believe he will make it any where else.

  4. We thank Mr. Renard for the service has provided for the Zambian people and we wish him good luck in his future.

Mr. Renard was one of the best coaches Zambia has ever had and for that we shall forever thank him for a job well done. Good luck to you sir as you further your career.

  5. My countries still has many lessons to learn. This guy had too big headed,,he isn’t anything yet in the world of football…Thank God that zambian football is better now and believe you me,that the next coach will definately enjoy the titles he will win with our national team.I wish he will be zambian,so that we can atleast boast and show the world the we are well able. Thanks Renard for showing us your hunger for money and disregard for building a profession first..Bon vojage:-h:-h:-h

  6. Good Riddance. Short of Winning the Africa Cup and not qualifyring for the World cup is failure. The team was not scoring goals. Fuseke !!

  7. Teti tubwelele panuma ba Zambia
    Teti tubwelele panuma.
    Ba Zambia twapapata pamakasa yenu
    Teti Tubwelele panuma.

    Before Renard there was Zambia
    During Renard there was Zambia
After Renard there will still be Zambia.

    Teti tubwelele panuma!!!

  8. He knows he friend Kalusha is not supporting him because Kalusha also is just after money-Kalusha behaves like is not zambian.
Thanks anyway for making your name out of zambia. Good luck

  9. Herve Renard was a fairly good coach in my opinion. He came up with a balanced Chipolopolo team.He also introduced to the team some exciting young talents.
Things at FAZ are not in order so it was wise for him to exit the scene.Lest he be blamed for another poor Zambia showing.FAZ can start looking for a replacement.
BUT PLEASE DON’T THINK OF DISTURBING WEDSON NYIRENDA.LET HIM FINISH HIS CAMPAIGNS WITH ZANACO FOR THE NEXT 3 YEARS.THEN YOU CAN GIVE HIM THE JOB AS COACH OF THE CHIPOLOPOLO BOYS.

  10. He was a good coach. Zambia really needed him, but unfortunately can pay. We really need sports development in Zambia where it can pay for its self like here in the USA. I strongly disagree with # 12. His a guy, I think, don’t understand how sports is funded in the USA or its only his using a US flag. #12 if u in the US be positive to help develop the sports in Zed.

  11. Good bye Renard, atleast you had a feel of Zambian stupidity in matters such as yours.Zambians dont like success, they are always looking for wrongs in individuals.
Fellow Zambians, no Zambian coach can deliver results, because none is a qualified coach. We started up something , but now , if at all we employ a Zambian, ythen we shall drop from #71on FIFA ranking to something like # 200.
Renard was okay for us because that is what we can afford. Angola have offered him $100 000against what we were paying ,$19 000.

  12. Kabiye boyi, kafikepo mune… wachula pafula!!!! na ba mosquito chilabushiku…go mate… :)>-:)>-:)>-:-h:-h:-h life is too short[-x[-x[-x[-x[-x

  13. Life is about moving on to our dreams and those of others. I wish him the best as we sought our own in the sports industry. Good luck upcoming superstarts. Zambia is a country and our coach was a gentleman. As a country, we still have work to do and thats why Im heading back to my desk and do some work to make a future for my fellow bloggers and those that are just here to pass time. Dear Zambians, lets us reflect on very important lessons that God has put ahead of each one of us and that of our leaders be it in sports and politics. Our coach did his job and its time he said good bye and help another country. Imagine another one coming our way that will lead us both into the Africa Cup of Nations and the then World Cup! Im confident of my feelings towards how God can change everything!

  14. Ati Goodu bye imwe … goodu bye
    Goodu bye imwe ….goodu bye

Just find a coach like Polsen or Porterfield(RIP)

  15. Bola mwela…. ni spirit! Ba Zambia Mwela onse…. nga mu camp muli umwela bala sunka umupila……So let Angola take the gamble. Nga balishala nomwela wakwa Savimbi they’ll persevere…
The KK11 could play even when paid only peanuts and move around the continent muli chi buffalo ..but wali mwela onse. Those were hard men we’ll forever miss you…Viva Zambia 11…..

  16. Naleeya makaka!!

Get out of the colonial funk and believe in yourselves for a change!! Please give this job to a Zambian coach now.

  17. Ante Buselic, Grabowski, Colonel Brightwell Banda, Sam “Zoom” Njovu, (and the guy who took over KK 11 after the Gabon Disaster): Humble but yet highly successful coaches, uyu umwaice achepa sana!

  18. Not sure Renard is worth $100,000/- Angola is offering him. He will be fired in no time at all. I didn’t see any improvement in the quality of the game. Let’s focus on getting another coach. Good riddance

  19. In my opinion our own politicing has made Renard leave. He was a coach who many distractors did not like but made an impression on the ZED soccer scene. Let us admit that Zambia is not what it was as a soccer giant in the seventies and eighties and therefore can not attract top caoches. Our local coaches still have a lot to learn ib terms of footballing tactics and technics. It is sad that he has left as he had the potential to turn things around. I wish him well in his new assignment

  20. Zambians will never appreciate good workers.Good bye RENARD .We have too many experts in Zambia whose only experience is criticizing.Ukabazye.

  21. His leaving is a good thing for Zambia. He succeded by chance and we wish him well. Now Kalu and company employ a well defined coach!!!

  22. Let us get Stephen Keshi, Qualified Togo a tiny country to the world cup. He knows what it takes to qualify a team hence we can learn from that. Keshi is committed. Look at Renard, he has even taken the Physical trainer Patrice Beaumelle with him but not Luandamina who was the assistsnt to him. It shows he has no love for Zambia but just the money and CV enrichment.

Keshi an African can do wonders as well remember Keshi and his Togo hammered us 4 – 1 in world cup qualiying with Kalu as our coach then in Lome. Lets go for him????!!!!!:)>-:d/

  23. Thanks for good things you did for mother Zambia, they always a time for everything.i hope you won’t miss our Zambian women.cause instead of coaching our boys on how to score you where busy scoring our women ever at chez ntemba and club 101 with different women.all the best as you chance another job elsewhere.

  24. Fare thee well Renard. Some people are failures in life thats why they would criticize anything that moves.

  25. As you climb up dont break the steps behind you on the ladder. You may need them on your way down. You came in peace go in peace.

  26. I can’t drop a tear for this man’s departure. He did nothing for Zambian football. Can someone tell me his achievements from the time he was hand – picked by Kalusha Bwalya.

  27. When the Chipolopolo boys reached the quarter finals, all praises where on Renard, and now that he’s leaving, mwatampa ukumutukana, mwaba shani mwe bantu? even if he never did anything for zambia national team, at least try to appreciate the little that he contributed coz some of you can’t even manage a team of cocroches! :-?=;^:)^#:-s

  28. WHY HE DELAYED HIS DEPARTURE????????? I WAS SUPPOSED TO LEAVE IMMEDIATELY AFTER AFCN! HE IS NOT A COACH HAS MANY FULS THINKS HERE. ZAMBIAN PLAYERS ARE JUST GOOD AT THE MOMENT. HE WILL BE FIRED SOON WHEREVER HE IS GOING. THAT GUY HAS NO QUALITIES OF A COACH. WE WILL BE WATCHING AND READING HIS MOVES. MOVED OUT OF OUR COUNTRY.. GO WITH YOUR FRIEND KALUSHA MONEY!!.:)>-

  29. Good riddance! In my books he hasn’t achieved anything and his contract should have been terminated long ago in favour of a local coach.I believe Wedson Nyirenda could have done a better job. We now need a local trainer.

  30. Renard, best wishes to you and good luck. We all do that, in life when it’s time to move on, you move on.

  31. Some guys have very short memories..”A local coach could have achieved more?” Support your argument with facts. The last local coach who took us there managed a first round knock out. Not that I liked Renard but foreign coaches have most of the time been better. Right now Kalusha who is a footballer should know that we need a coach to take us a step further after the little that Renard achieved. We dont need a coach that will take us backwards

  32. Renard! Go well my dear. You did us proud and we thank God for you. May God’s grace be upon you as you start new life else where. Bye !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. There are 15 men on the dead man’s chest. yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum. Renard, this is a pirates life for me. May your God go with you

  34. silly chap can go hang himself. That PE teacher. you get an expatriate pay him so much and he fails to get you the Cosafa, Cecafa (where we were embarrased by Zanzibar) and takes you to the quater finals and say he did greta thing. to me thats accepting mediocrety let him go to countries where expectations are high and he will see that he blew his trumpet quite early.

  35. Totally agree with #43.

Actually he should be arrested together with the FAZ President who employed him for obtaining money (salaries) by false pretences.

  36. He did well but he also became very arrogant. He is no Arsene Wenger, yet he sees himself as someone who can manage bigger international teams. He needs his chance to prove that his talent can match his ego and ambition. I wish him well and thank him for his services to our team.

As for Zambia, let’s focus on investing in our youngsters by implementing effective programs that will identify, develop, harness and efficiently utilise footballing talent from all corners of the country. We need a well supported long term strategy that will place us on equal terms with the likes of Egypt, Ghana, the Ivory Coast and others in 10yrs time. Mbola should be a shining example to our kids – let’s hope he does not follow the Mbesuma example of self destruction when faced with a few extra Ngwees!

  38. Mother Zambia, when are we going to learn that changing coaches like under wear takes us nowhere. Now there is talk of a local chap, who? We have recycled all the local coaches and think they have improved coaching teams that do not even go anywhere in a club continental tourneys.I liked this guy coz at least he had a vision; assembling the young and bright into stars at afcon. And if we had left this coach mature together with this young team I bet we could have become regional beaters then continent beater, but back to square one as usual.Anyway Good luck Hervie you made us proud in Angola, I saw a zambian team for the first time in a long time.

  39. Let’s now get a galactico bench: Mark Hughes as Manager, Scolari as coach, Lwandamina as physical trainer and Pandor as the token Asian on the bench. :-\”
