MMD’s NEC to decide Katele’s fate

Share

THE National Executive Committee (NEC) of the MMD will determine whether national secretary Katele Kalumba should resign from his position or not, party national chairperson Michael Mabenga has said.

Speaking in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Mabenga said the issue of whether Dr Kalumba should resign from his position or not would only be determined by NEC and advised outsiders to desist from commenting on the matter that was purely internal.

“This is a NEC matter and I don’t know how many times I am going to talk about it. The NEC will soon meet and it will be discussed, it’s only NEC that can determine such a matter,” Mr Mabenga said.

Last week, the Lusaka magistrate court jailed Dr Kalumba to five years imprisonment for corrupt practices. Dr Kalumba has since appealed against the conviction and sentence.

Owing to the conviction, some stakeholders have been calling for Dr Kalumba’s resignation from his party position or that the MMD should force him to step down.

Mr Mabenga said that most of the people calling for the resignation of Dr Kalumba were in fact not members of the party.

He, therefore, wondered in what capacity such individuals were speaking considering that they were not even members of the MMD.

“We are not concerned with the sentiments by the people who are not even MMD.

This is a party that is governed by a constitution and these people talking do not even know what they are talking about.

An individual cannot determine this matter. NEC is composed of 58 people and they all have to sit and discuss,” Mr Mabenga said.

Many of the stakeholders talking about Dr Kalumba’s resignation, Mr Mabenga said, were not even aware of the MMD constitution.

He said that the party would not make a decision based on complaints from some individuals or non-governmental organisations but would strictly follow the constitution.

  1. you have already decided his fate, just because he was showing interest in standing as presido candidate at yo convention, you decided to “fix” him.Who doesnt know of your dirty political gimmics???
Anyway all this aside, the man deserves to be behind bars.

  2. Magande observed that the MMD would arm the opposition further that the party was being run by corrupt leaders should Kalumba remain in office.
“Because you cannot go around now and start campaigning, because you will need to now start explaining the issues surrounding the national secretary. It will definitely weaken the MMD as an institution, and it will compromise our standing as a party,” he said.
Magande said there was no way Kalumba could continue operating as national secretary since he was now a convict
Isnt MAGANDE an MMD as well as a NEC MEMBER,what is Mr CDF talking about

  3. A normal leader would just resign rather than waste people’s time discussing a straight forward issue.

  4. George Kunda is not a member of the PACT but why is he always preoccupied with commenting on the PACT? Katele must resign, so must Mabenga who was convicted by the courts of law – Poetic Justice!!!

  5. When NEC meets, they should start with Mabenga’s CDF case which was just hushed. I dont support Katele but then fairness shoud be seen to be adhered to. Both Mabenga and Katele are not fit to be leaders. If it were in developed countries, they would have resigned but then wait a minute, this is Zambia the real Africa where even the first lady can be paid a teachers salary for months she never taught and she remains a saint…..not even an appology.

  6. Actually, Katele SHOULD REFUSE to resign so that we see what the CDF Mabenga and Drug VJ would do. Let he who has no criminal record tell Katele to resign. Katele stay on so that you lot are kicked out at the same time…why should you be forced to resign?

  7. You guys the majority of MMD leaders survive on corruption and theft of public resources. Theft is– OK in MMD. So Katele`s conviction is no big deal. Didn`t you hear Mulongoti saying MMD is not bothered because no one is an angel. In MMD you can only be honest if you are an angel. This is how rotten the Zambian ruling party is.

  8. Mr Mabenga, Which party constitution are you talking about? You mean the one you have not been faithful to? If that constitution is still relevant then hold the convention and stop endorsing Banda as a president, because doing so is unconstitutional.

  9. it is all said and done both mabenga and katele should resign we all know that mabenga was been protected by late mwanawasa. now it is time for this man`s case to come to the foreground.

  10. Lets be real guyz, who amongst all of you bloggers, can stand and proudly claim he/she has never been involved in any corrupt practise. Leave Katele alone! KEEP QUIET na d check yourselves first.
