PATRIOTIC Front (PF) leader Michael Sata yesterday launched a scathing attack on pact partner, United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema for attempting to diminish his chances to run for the Republican presidency on account of his age.
But UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma, who ducked questions on the attack and tried hard to downplay it, only said the pact would pick its presidential candidate after some electoral guidelines had been concluded.
In an unprecedented and shocking stance since the two parties agreed to work together last year, Mr Sata said he was by far the better candidate.
He said age was not a factor for the Republican presidency considering that some of the best presidents Africa had produced were much older than Mr Hichilema.
Mr Sata cited Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade, South Africa’s Jacob Zuma, and post-apartheid South African icon Nelson Mandela as some of the leaders who had performed beyond their age limitations.
He said this during a live radio programme on Hot FM, called the Hot Seat, where he explained that even in the absence of the ‘rebel’ Members of Parliament, PF still emerged as a stronger force than UPND.
Mr Hichilema had told supporters at Lusaka International Airport on arrival from the United States of America (US) in May that many developed and developing countries had shifted from the practice of voting for old leaders.
He cited the example of Tanzania, Russia, United Kingdom and the US, which he said had voted into office younger and intelligent leaders aged between 40 and 50 years.
But Mr Sata said he had never gone round the country to speak ill of Mr Hichilema and dismissed allegations that the PF was treating UPND as a small party in the pact formed last year in which it was agreed that they would field one candidate for the national presidency.
He said accusations that PF was treating the UPND as a junior party were inaccurate but insisted that PF was far much bigger than UPND.
He said Mr Hichilema did not show respect for him as a partner in the pact when he boasted that he was more suitable for the top post because of his younger age.
Mr Sata said PF was strong in Luena Constituency but it had decided to allow UPND to contest the seat on behalf of the pact as a way of showing respect to the UPND.
He, however, said the UPND leaders were holding meetings on the Copperbelt to attack the PF.
He said there had been statements from some UPND senior members welcoming the proposed pact with the MMD which was multiplying the confusion and reducing the credibility of the pact.
On the collapse of the agreement in Chadiza where both the PF and UPND had contested a ward by-election against the provisions of the agreement, Mr Sata said that had demonstrated the strength of PF in Eastern Province, an area that was widely viewed as a no-go area for PF.
And the UPND spokesperson could not give categorical answers to questions on Mr Sata’s attacks on his pact partner.

Age in deed is not a factor as both Sata and HH are not too old to lead Zambia. The PACT should never publicly criticize each other, they should have a forum to address any differences. Junior officers in each party must not attack senior leaders. The PACT can and must win in 2011. Divided, they will give the MMD a crude chance to rig and win. The MMD is not an altenative to he PACT but heyond the PACT there is no decent Opposition that can Win. APC, Heritage, UNIP all are fossils.

If both SATA and HH take this stance then both of u are going nowhere and nobody will trust you anymore. The biggest problem with the pact leaders and its followers on this blog is your failiure to accommodate other views, and the phobia of criticism. Whenever any person advises you on the pact, that person is accused of being MMD, being bought, ot whatever derogative term the pact can think of. Where are we now, back to square one, vindicating leaders like Chizyuka, who was among the first to demand that pact be consolidated at foundation, resolve or leadership disputes at inception. This advice was ignored, thus even after a year the leaders are not united. Perhaps the pact should have listned, instead of being quick to trash this advice. This pact was never consolidated at formation, it has no foundation, its weakness is its downfall.

Having read Sata’s statement in both papers and the Post editorial comments I think it is better for UPND to leave the pact and go it alone or alternatively explore the offer to work with MMD. Mmembe and Sata have a clear agenda to use UPND as a means to go to state house. I find Mmembe’s analysis nauseating and his definition of sincerity twisted. He seems to turn a blind eye on Sata’s wrongs in his attempt to portray UPND as the insincere party. Entire Northern province Lungu chiefs endorse RB for 2011
ALL the Lungu chiefs in Northern Province have resolved to support President Banda and the MMD in next year’s general elections.Senior Chief Tafuna of the Lungu people said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday by his representative Chomba Sikazwe that President Banda has exhibited good leadership in implementing development programmes.
“All the Lungu chiefs have endorsed President Banda and the MMD for the 2011 presidential, parliamentary and local government elections,” Senior Chief Tafuna said.The traditional ruler said President Banda’s good policies, especially in the agriculture sector, have resulted in the country to record a bumper harvest this year.
MMD still force to reckon with, says PF MP
KALULUSHI Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament Anson Simama has said it will be difficult to dislodge the MMD from power because it is still a giant.And Mr Simama has said the PF-United Party for National Development (UPND) Pact would not form the next Government because its foundation was not defined when being formed.Mr Simama said yesterday in an interview in Kitwe that the issue of the pact had not worked in Zambia before, and, that even the current pact would not work because its direction was not spelt out from its inception.He said the pact was merely between the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and his PF counterpart, Michael Sata.
The grassroot members in the two parties were yet to appreciate the workings and ultimate goals of the pact.Mr Simama said in his area, for instance, it was difficult to point at any structure that existed for the pact activities.He said the grassroots were not familiar with the pact and its activities apart from reading about them in the media.
Some PF and UPND cadres in Kitwe said on condition of anonymity that they were concerned about the happenings in the pact because the top leadership.Meanwhile, PF Secretary General Wynter Kabimba yesterday failed to categorically state whether his party was still committed to the pact amid allegations that the party was reconsidering its position on the two parties’ agreement.
And the Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) advised the PF and UPND to resolve the problems that had beset the pact or announce their disbandment “as soon as possible” if they have failed to agree.
PF member predicts MMD’s continued rule
FORMER Kasenengwa member of Parliament, Timothy Nyirenda has insisted that the MMD will remain in power even after 2011 because of the serious leadership crisis in UPND-PF pact.
Mr Nyirenda, who is also a Patriotic Front (PF) member, said in Chipata yesterday that there was a serious leadership crisis in the pact and it would not form government until probably after 2021 elections.
He was commenting on revelations by Mwense PF Member of Parliament, Jacob Chongo that PF and UPND have agreed to dissolve their pact and were only looking for a way to inform their followers.
Having read the story in the post, i wonder why LT has chosen not to quote Sata by his actual words. They have however chosen choice words to paint a picture of their liking.
I for one thinks HH is being petty in this PACT. Recently, he went to America and on his return, he said he was more popular and the world was changing and gave examples of Britain and so forth for ushering in young presidents. Imus say its not youthfulness that saves the day or may answer the cries of many zambians out their. In any case Sata has the experience in govt and all sects of public service, his party is more popular than HH’s and has more sits in parliamnet than Up & Down party of HH. Mr Nyirenda said that those who believed in the pact of forming a government in next year’s elections should forget because the loose alliance would not manage to resolve its leadership wrangle.
“The issue of leadership in the pact has always been a source of concern because as far as I am concerned Mr Michael Sata and Mr Hakainde Hichilema do not trust each other and I know they have already split,” he said.
He said the current activities in the UPND-PF pact had exposed the two leaders that they could not form a government.
“I know the two opposition political party leaders can cheat people in urban areas to vote for them but not in rural areas because people believe and trust the MMD leadership unlike the urban areas,” Mr Nyirenda said.

The forum has observed that selfish people generally advocated political pacts without the vision for the country.
CCCF information and publicity chairperson Wilbroad Mutoloka said in a statement in Ndola yesterday political parties should not enter into pacts or alliances before holding conventions.

I for one thinks its the UPND members who are selfish, and HH has failed to hold UPND together. We can see with Sata, how discplined he is with his members. We saw it with the rebel MP’s. However, if HH does not hold his party together and expects a PACT with a strong, well discplined PF, he will loose his mind. What is wrong with HH saying the world is turning to Younger Leaders?? It is true. Its his way of telling voters that its okay to vote for a young leader not that he meant to say “Dont vote for Sata coz he is old”. Sata must behave in an elderly way. This is not the first time Sata has quoted the Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade as being old and intelligent. This is a very misleading statement, any one who is familiar with West Africa politics will tell you that the silly old cow supported an illegal take over of power in the Gambia by then-Lieutenant Jammeh on 22 July 1994 just because Jemmah was from the Wolon tribe like him. I wonder why Sata does not quote Mugabe next door as opposed to scampering to West Africa for comparables leaving a more suitable one next door.
Sata is a selfish old man and believe me you if the PACT finally crushes he will go to his grave with Minister without portfolio as his highest achievement. If he becomes sober and allows HH the briliant young man to run for Presidency then he can atleast attain vice presidency. Well, well, finally we have arrived; at the end of what never was. Sata like his supporters thought they were clever and that HH and UPND were dull and could be woodwinked. HH did not become chief executive of a multinational company for nothing – he is sharp!

#89 MK: that is the dilemma. Choosing a pact president based on historical results is not the best criteria. Sata could have been more popular in 2008 but that could not be the case now. I think the best option is to choose a pact leader at a specially convened summit were delegates from each province representing each party are allowed to vote. There are fears that this might cause divisions, but that is the price you pay for democracy. Alternatively it will be better for them to push for a 50 plus presidential system and let each party stand alone. That way we can determine who is more popular and then the people can chose which pact to go for depending on the results. …..each part of the body is equally important for the body system to function well.
I will tell you one thing, even if Sata formed an alliance with MMD, there will be sincereity in govt. RB also just needs someone to lean on and at the moment is surrounded by people who have messed up and need protection. If HH merged with MMD, i doubt there will be change?

It seems there is a serious problem of insincerity and dishonesty in the PF-UPND pact.
And probably, this is why Michael Sata is demanding sincerity in this pact.
We all know very well that this pact will not work if it is not founded on sincerity and honesty. And in any pact or alliance, those involved in it have to accept the integrity of their partners.
If they fail to do so, it will not be possible for them to build a meaningful or viable partnership.
We say this because a pact that lacks sincerity will have intra-pact strife which will inevitably result in pact members’ concentration on discords, distracting the pact from effective and efficient opposition
Surely it would be better for the country if the pact was to die a natural death. If they is all this noise before they have even produced a manifesto and chosen a leader, how the hell do you expect them to govern for five years and produce positive tangible results? The pact has been in existence for over a year now, if it had any strength in it’s legs, we should now be talking about the pacts policies and who is in their shadow cabinet and not this non-sense which has nothing to do about the development of Zambia but the interests of certain individuals. Ousting MMD from power should not be the basis of a any political movement. Zambia and Zambians deserve better.

UPND is welcome to enter an alliance with MMD, VJ
Veteran Politician Vernon Mwaanga says that the United Party for National Development UPND is welcome to enter into Political Alliance with the Movement for Multi party Democracy MMD.
Mr. Mwaanga who is also MMD National trustee says that the UPND and MMD unlike the PF and UPND can only get into an alliance and not into a Pact.
Mr. Mwanga also reaffirmed that assertions that there are talks going on between the UPND and the MMD are false and unfounded.
He said that the MMD has no reason to hide any agreements that it is getting into with other parties.

This was said by HH in April 2010. Why apply it like it happened yesterday? Frustrating and f .o.o.l.i.s.h.
Now we see who HH is, just trying to hijack things. Where the ground is hot, he moves where its abit warm. Can we trust such kind of a leader. Solution lies in booting MMD completely out of govt or else let him not even condemn RB because its like he shares the spoils of his thinking with MMD. I said it that, HH is unpopular as compared to Sata and the figures also testify-sits in parliament. Howver, he wants to use the populace of PF to get the highest sit. Things dont just come that way. If the pronouncements of HH before were not right, should have called him there and then and discuss them with him in private. The pact is a marriage. The formular which the Post have is to destroy the pact and let UPND stan alone or with another small party. They have seen that UPND is only likely to get votes from MMD strong hold since a truee MMD can not vote for a lumpen. This will erode the 35,000 vote leed that MMD had over Sata and Sata will win. That is why I think it is important for UPND not to just leave the pact but to support MMD.
It’s good president Sata has come out and brought to the fore these issues, he’s not like any of you pretenders always hiding and pretending. Let us debate these things, bring them out and resolve on how we should move forward.
Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Felix Mutati said Government efforts to reduce the cost of doing business in Zambia are beginning to bear fruit.
Speaking at the launch of Pick n Pay in Lusaka on Wednesday night, Mr Mutati said the retail sector in Zambia is the second biggest contributor to the gross domestic product (GDP) at 15 percent.
Pick n Pay is investing US$25 million in Zambia, and its goal is to open seven stores, five in Lusaka and two on the Copperbelt.
Mr Mutati said Government is keen to make a difference in Zambia, adding that the coming of investors such as Pick n Pay will help make a difference.
“The wave of inspiration is what Pick n Pay is bringing to Zambia. The company will connect 5,000 farmers who will be supplying vegetables and fruits,” he said. Pick n Pay chairman Gareth Ackerman said the legacy of the retail store is looking after its customers, helping the business community and the surrounding community. “Pick n Pay started in South Africa in 1967, and our focus is on developing the African operations. We are happy to be in Zambia, a market that is growing very fast with the projected GDP of 5.8 percent this year,” he said. Pick n Pay group enterprise director Dallas Langman said the retail store chain is excited to be expanding in Africa as evidenced by the opening of its first store in Zambia.

In 2008 some UPND voters backed RB becoz expected Levy’s legacy to continue(sympathy vote) or they feared Sata would win. Some UPND voters supported Sata becoz they wanted to increase the chances of kicking out MMD. There were no parliamentally elections that year and no MPs were campaigning on the ground. The Post supported Sata and the state media supported RB so the contest was portrayed as a two horse race. HH also lost his supporters in Eastern Province as they switched to their own son. These factors will be different in the next elections. The recently held bye elections are pointing something different.
I wish some people would stop “copying and pasting” biographies from wikipedia and masquarading as being fountains of knowledge. Let us also not equate intelligence or leadership to education. Unless you are saying that before education was introduced in africa there was no one capable of leading or anyone intelligent.
As for this disagreement within the pact – this is the test of leadership and the power of persuasion. If HH and Sata fail to use their negociating and reasoning skills to reach a diplomatic agreement, then how can we trust them with more serious matters of state? Consider how Obama embraced Hilary Clinton post election despite her attacks on him previously, and thus placated to an extent the democratic party.

We need to keep our eyes on the ball and not drop it, the objective is to remove MMD. If we effective democratic institutions that are independent and serve as checks and balances and ensure good governance, it shouldn’t really matter that much wether it is Sata or HH that is the President. Obviously i do have a preference, but rather than add to the diviseness, i will keep my ballot secret.
There are a number of strategies the pact could use. Have we forgotten that when MMD was formed Chiluba was nowhere in the leadership picture, he was merely used as an instrument for change. Not so much a pone in a game of chess because as we both know he turned on them and “bum-rushed” them! Wrong choice in the end, but fit for purpose

143 – Legacy, if the objective was to develop the country then they would not be focusing on elections. They would be content to play their role as official opposition create checks and balances. The PACT has collapsed because it had no real support among the masses/grassroots in both parties. If the masses believe in a cause they will not allow it to collapse, they will simply change leaders who are found wanting and move on.
