Mwanawasa doubted he would reach 2011-Magande

Share

Former finance and National Planning Minister Ng’andu Magande has disclosed that late President Levy Mwanawasa once told his cabinet ministers during a meeting where he anointed him as his successor that he doubted if he would reach 2011.

He recalls that before the late president left for Egypt for African Union summit, he had a meeting with cabinet ministers on his choice for the presidential candidate.

Mr Magande said some cabinet ministers in the current government are aware that late president Mwanawasa wanted him to be the presidential candidate for the ruling MMD.

He added that one of the cabinet ministers during the same meeting asked the president why he had chose him to be the presidential candidate, to which he responded that he was not feeling well and doubted if he will reach 2011.

The Former Finance Minister said the late president wanted a smooth transition, hence he decided to choose a person who he thought had achieved a lot.

Mr Magande noted that it is a pity that the cabinet ministers who he did not mention have remained mute on the matter.

He explained that during the meeting the late president told the ministers present to help him understand how to run the country.

Mr Magande has since expressed confidence that the truth will come out sooner or later.

He also has expressed shock at some MMD members from Lusaka province who are de-campaigning him.

Mr Magande said it is quite surprising that the people from his own party are busy telling people that he is a failed Member of Parliament.

He pointed out that he has done so much for Chilanga constituency and that it would not be possible for people to de-campaigning him to succeed.

Mr Magande said this last evening on Frank Talk hosted by Frank Mutubila on national television.

  1. Sir, I don’t doubt you or think you were telling lies on the program. However the best bent for you now is to switch parties at an ideal time. You don’t expect thugs who can tear your suit to agree with you even on a matter that is self explanatory.LEAVE THEN BEFORE THE 2011 ELECTIONS PERIOD.

  2. Mr. Magande, sir learn to accept change. The Ministers and others you are talking about conspired against you for their own benefit and that was a long long time ago. You are not Minister at the moment because you opposed RB’s candidature. Please sir, stop weeping and let by gones be by gones. as some people say. You will never be President of Zambia. The qualities for which H.E.L.P wanted you to be President are long forgotten. Its time for your enemies to shine. Please sir, accept defeat and move on. You are good but in the present moment not a factor. RB is the man of the moment and cry as you may, there is no turning back for the MMD.

  3. Although i sympathise with Magande and feel he should be given a shot at standing if he meets the minimum criteria, i hardly think the annointing by Mwanawasa (MHSRIP)is relevent at this point. Democratic process requires that elections be held to determine the leader. Mwanawasa simply expressed his wishes but with all due respect, they are not binding.

  4. Magande u ought to move on.look here, this annointing thing wont work anymore. We all know that Levy wanted to fire RB on his return from Egypt.Go to another party my friend.stop crying young boy!

  5. magande silly *****. so wat? why say it now?? thats old news mune! well u can now go back to bed and dream on how it wud have been if u were in state house. solly voyi hahaha.awe are all potential presidents from mmd not good looking?

  6. Mr Magande should not cry foul, it is just time to move on and contribute to the nation as an MP. Being a president is not the only way one can contribute to national development. The fact that LPM had so much confidence in him does not mean that all the cabinet ministers and the entire party thought the same. Magande must just move on because his plans are different from the current MMD leadership. Hence the two cannot work together. So Magande just leave the MMD or else they will force you out!

  7. MMD is not a monarchy and ba Magande went through elections which saw him come out second. He was just LPM’s preferred successor, not that he would have gone through without being subjected to elections.MMD and Zambia are not monarchies period.

  8. in think mr magande u ar right but in that party with RB u will never be a president,i can encourage u to leave that party and join in other party.

  9. It is just as good you didn’t ascend to the throne because if that happened a band of conmen would still have been siphoning this country of billions or trillions of kwacha through zambian airways and task force, maureen mwanawasa would still have been the sole supplier of nurses uniforms, george mpombo might have been vp.chiluba would have been persecuted.so for you magande god forbade

  10. After the death of LPM, the MMD, (unlike other parties that shall remain nameless) had an election to choose their new leader. RB, Magande amongst others all stood for the top job but RB was the one who emerged a winner by a long margin. So Magande you just need to get over it and move on. You lost. Your parliamentary seat in Chilanga was won by you under a cloud. If your cabinet colleagues had agreed with LPM then things would have been different for you. Things change and in a democratic process there are winners and losers. We can not be beholden to the wishes of the late Mwanawasa in perpetuity. He is gone and that is the end of it.

  11. pa zed yalikaba. ba magande ala tata mwalisa lusa kuli ba rb for the presidential candidate. ni democracy. period. awe twalileni uku bombesha ku chilanga.

  12. Ala is this man normal? He is aying Mwanawasa wanted hime to take over what? F>O>O.L.I.S.H. MAN. For some reason I feel this crook Magande is really conceited. What did he do for this economy? Was he working alone? Musokotwane was Principal Advisor at State House advising the President not this little big mouthed i.d.i.o.t.who gave away K9 billion to Mathani and boasted that there is nothing wrong with helping a friend and who wrote that letter to Dors asking her to steal money from ZNACl to give to his cronies at Zambian Arirways?

  13. He says that he is surprised that MMD members in Lusaka are de-campaigning him! Hello, have you ever heard of the notion of loyalty to your party and it’s democratically elected leader? Cuts both ways ba Ng’andu.

  14. Magande comes from Gwemnbe valley…he is the one to ask how come Mwanawasa died after he was annointed? He wanted to short circuit the process with those Maurine Witch Doctors from Kenya who always camped at Nkwazi House. Romours are abound that some one lost a thumb in the process???

  15. When are these Mwanawasaists going to learn that the poor man is dead? Its been two years now. Let the poor man rest in peace. There was an election within the party and you lost, end of story. If you think there was some rigging, you should go to Sata to get advice on how to fight electoral malpractice in court. Cant they give it a rest? First it was Maureen soon after the husband died saying that her husband wanted Magande to take over without any evidence and as if MMD is like PF which is a one man show. Zambia is not a monarchy. Whether you were annointed by LPM is immaterial, you lost a free and fair election.

  16. #9 NDALYA LIVE, Ala ulishilu boyi, ati he should go back to bed and dream about how it would have been, mudala alilusa timing.

  17. #15 SATA LI BOLO. You have tikled me to the core. Kwena wansekesha we mwaume katwishi ngolimwanakashi. But did you watch Magende? Just like Sata that face is not Presidential. Surely, how would you think as a Zambian living in the States and there come Magande or Sata as your leader. would want the earth to open up and swallow you. The Post wanted Magande so that they continue looting Pension money thru Zambian Airways. God Forbid. Iye ati LPM wanted to sack RB on return from Egypt. Thank God he had to die—the Egyptian you see to day throu LPM You shall see them no more. Lesa wakwa Chiluba nilesa wabonse kanshi. ifyalepanga ba LPM kanshi mwamona. Whilst PF/UPND pact remain without an agenda RB is scoring points daily whether you like it or not and people are shifting to RB. 2011 vivaRB

  18. No WAy!
Dont use LPM just campaign and people will judge!!!! Zambian politicians are useless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. i am ashamed to even read this cheap stuff. On the one hand, Magande and Mpombo are busy talking about the convention, now he is telling the nation about how he was annointed as LPMs succesor. Like other bloggers have said, he was just a preferred candidate for Levy and one wonders why he should be behaving like a kid. For heavens sake ke stood for the MMD presidency and lost. What more did he want? I was right when i said Mpombo and Magande handled the succession battle badly. He has just confirmed it.when Levy recommends him its okay but when the majority want convention things done the other way, they are wrong! Let him try parties where they hold convetions after as-long-as-the-word-convention-is years.

  20. This fool … so what. even Sata was promised by FTJ and the midget dribbled him…. Please accept that LPM is dead and RB is the man in charge. ..or continue dreaming in tonga

  21. Why do they have to bring LPM’s name into this? The man is dead, the whole country had an opportunity to see his body. I wont repeat what some said about the smell, but please let the man rest in peace. Whilst he was alive he was called a ‘cabbage’, nagged by Maureen who was having an affair right in front of his very eyes and now that he is dead people still want to drag his name in the mud. Leave him alone for God’s sake mulekeni atusheko nayena. Alekeni a pumule nao a LPM.

  22. #22 & # 9 mulibakali. your coments are quite ‘tripatite’. by the there is a ka rumour. that M….MBE is now chewing Dr. M.o.o.r.i.n. after giving ‘chasy’ to A..N..D..Y..’s dota after realising the dream of share tranfer

  23. Give Magande a chance please this is democracy; but things did fall appart for you , but Levi had onother agender to give every thing to RB;; politicians always do what they dont want to do that is why it happened that way ,now you have to fight for yourself and it wont be easy

  24. So the cabinet ministers knew that Levy was sick then why did they let him remain in office – more over his personal doctor allowed him to travel when infact the knew that he was a very sick man? His wife also let her man die for the sake of wanting to be in state house much longer this is indeed is very sad!

  25. Better to keep halt! Else you will subject yourself to the rude cadres in the streets. You lost, RB got elected. In life sometimes you win and loose. Take it on the chin and be a noble person and continue making contributions to the nation. Bush duped Albert Gore. But the man moved on and did not even try to make a second attempt when the grassroots of Democrats wanted him to go for it.

Else, if you keep attempting this will lead you to some embarrassments that of John McCain. McCaine has not recovered due to the fact that he got bit by a Black man. He keeps indirectly jabbing Barack but it’s very too late.

  26. In as much as I don’t have faith in the current Banda regime i feel that Mr Magande’s seeking for sympathy is evident here. Going to the media with torn jackets is also not a good idea. Using Frank as a tool should be the last thing that one can do. Magande just show us what you’ve got and you will be at State house. These thugs are spent and have run out of steam. Anything will do for Zambia, that’s the stage we have reached. Can’t you see this?

  27. This is the lowest point of Ba Magande. Yes LPM wanted you so that you could shield all the showdy deals. Oil Deals with Mathani, Zambian Airways, RP Capital was also done in LPM’s administration. But so far even if Ba Vasco da Banda is stealing so they say has made so many improvements to the economy without Magande. So are you seriously needed by the people of Zambia.

  28. For sure this is political intent. It’s just sad that he is using Levy. What he needs to be asking is that: Why did he not get enough support when he was up with RB?

Fred M’membe is looking for someone that can be MMD candidate after 2016 or be it 2011 itself. Fred knows that the more the PACT becomes dislocated the less chance Cobra will move into power, looking at statistics. The only people that can kill the Zambian Airways scandals are Mangande or Chameleon Sata.

RB had support from Kunda, Teta, Mwaanga, Mulongoti and so on. Magande failed to get all the big guns

  29. Of course Mangende should exercise his right. But Party Politics are the same even in developed democracies like USA, UK, German, France and Japan. One has to lobby very hard and get support from the inner circles before a name gets put forward.

This is the same reason why M’Membe has just realised that embarrassing HH will just lead to most sympathisers voting against Sata in marginal areas. So the exercise has not worked into Fred’s favour and he is bitting his teeth

  30. Creditors wanted to move in grab assets from M’Membe but RB stopped them because he thinks that the Nation and International Community would accuse him to be behind the Creditors.

Come 2011, if RB wins, he will let go and these Creditors and they will pounce on M’Membe.

  31. Saturday October 20, 2007
Patriotic Front president Michael Sata has said the oil deals between President Levy Mwanawasa and a named bank are very suspicious. Commenting on the disclosure by President Mwanawasa that he was involved in resolving the fuel crisis that rocked the country in recent weeks, Sata said Zambians had not forgotten issues to do with the procurement of oil over the years.

    Magande was Minister of Finance

  32. We all have for years seen the completely useless nature of the anti-corruption commission but it is very suprising to hear all the accolades wolves and hyenas of the worst order showered on the late Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) chairperson judge Chileshe. I am not the word to pull puches, I will call a spade a spade, for any one to head such a toothless bull dock, the man was devoid of any iorta of shame and thank god for this good riddance.

  33. Watching Magande on ZNBC TV last night, I thought that he was a pitiful sight crying for the presidency that never was. Whatever he called it inheritance, smooth transition etc was just shameless semantics to save face. Not worth dwelling on the story.
By the way, ZNBC is a state media like Times of Zambia or Daily Mail, which some of you condemn so much as tissue paper, I am surprised that most of you were watching the programme. How do you stand looking at your faces in the mirror?

  34. Ati that is why Banda does not stay at plot 1 because chipuku cha Mwanawasa sichimfuna. Futinso, kuli ena amene anena kuti Maureen anasiyamo mankhwala mu state house chifukwa afuna kuti a Magande akakulemo.

  35. Magande stop invoking dead people in your campains, forget about Mwanawasa. I was also promised by FTJ, i have forgotten about it now. Please do like wise, styupid boy.

  36. I think its a curse to be promised because none of our presidents so far were promised by anyone. Those of us who were promised continue to languish, as for you even your jacket was awkwardly torn in your efforts to realise your promise…

  37. Mr. Magande need to stop using the late President for his political gain. Does he want to be handed the Presidency just because….I don’t think so, get on the line. I never thought he could be this desperate.

  38. Mr. Magande please spare us. You tried and lost and just leave it at that. Besides, there’re issues you stood for that some of us were very uncomfortable with – like trying to make Zambian Airways a national airline after the owners had squandered the money and run up millions (of Dollars) in debts.

  39. SECRETS WILL COME OUT
2011 election period will be very exciting! Let Magande start talking because him, Maureen and RB knows what happened in Egypt just B4 LPM died. Magande will be frustrated to a point where he will spill the beans and RB and Maureen and possibly FTJ will be answerable for LPMs cause of death!

  40. someone has to explain what was in LPMs water and food before he left zambia and while in cairo. How can someone explain Maureen going shopping in france while LPM was laying dead in the military hospital? Magande and Maureen know what killed LPM. RB is a good bull dog who refused to pass on the presidency to Maureen or Magande….

  41. George Kunda will die a VP no matter what because there are certain things and secrets about LPMs death and the rise of RB which can destroy MMD forever. LPM managed to pool a good number of political enemies both while he was vice president and more so when he took over office. Many people wanted him gone and they achieved it. Its a circle of evil running Zambia.

  42. and thats why its gone to the dogs now..we have no leadership as a country..whether we like it or not..we are doomed..we need change..

  43. This is very frightening. A whole politician who does not understand the principle of elections which means that there are winners and losers and this was our finance minister.

  44. At no time in the history of Zambia has the ruling MMD party ever changed its constitution to become a monarchy. MMD leadership is born out of participatory democratic traditions in which bonafide members in good standing subject themselves to. Be in good standing with the party and not serving as an inimical vuvuzela of sore losers. Its interesting to see you gasping for votes and confidence from and establishment of voters, party structures and functionaries you have been insulting with impunity.Build your political constituency first in the party establishment then jump-start your dreams somewhere. MMD leadership is born from internal political constituencies and not hullabaloos of a tabloid or indeed disingenuous cyber trolling armchair critics.

  45. Yaba, ba Magande, going by the comments from the bloggers you have no support on this issue. Let the dead lie in peace and move on. The Zambian presidency job is not for you. You are an intelligent man, something better will come your way.

  46. Magande has never been a politician but untrustworthy technocrat. Evidence is in how he deserted late Mazoka as UPND finance adviser at the 11th hour for a solicited job to Levy. Throughout his tenure he was at political variance with members national wide including his own village in Choma.I would love to see him point at his political constituency some day.

  47. The best Magande can do is explain his selling of economically vibrant ZANACO at an insulting US $8 million and what he did with all the debt forgiveness considering that he left behind no single capital project to point at other than flaunting numbers. It was at the peak of his leadership that our young ones at UNZA were graduating from the roof-tops of their hostels. His other achievement is that that of selling the soul of Martin Mubanga a joint citizen of both the United Kingdom and Zambia to mafias. Mubanga was held, without charge, and interrogated at the American prison at Guantanamo Bay for 33 months to the chasm of Magande in pursuit of a name.

  48. LT there is more Magande said on the Frank Talk show than this. Please write more on what else he said on development etc. Which were very impressive. What we all need to get from this is that RB and all the other ministers around are liars and people who care more about themselves. If they cared about development they would have done the right thing and chose someone who showed capability than RB who in the last 3 years we have seen nothing and heard nothing about development from him and his followers.

  49. #64 So you would call the biggest bumper maize harvest in our history as anti-development? The re-opening of the closed mine in Luanshya is not a positive development? Inflation falling is not development? Newly commissioned Namwala road or the Chipata-Mchinji railway line is not development? But you would call using public funds to bail out an airline that has failed due to mismanagement and dodgy deals with Mahtani as development? Carry on sticking your head in the sand. Whatever you may say, RB is president now and will be re-elected again next year. Magande however will always be a sore loser who does not understand the principles of democracy and who shamelessly uses a dead president to further his doomed political ambitions.

  50. #64 RB has been president of the Republic of Zambia since November 2008 and not for 3 years. Given that, I think he has achieved a lot in the close to 2 years he has been in power. His policies shielded the country from the worst effects of the global financial melt-down that took hold in the latter part of 2008.

  51. On “He [Mr MAGANDE Ng’andu] pointed out that he has done so much for Chilanga constituency and that it would not be possible for people to de-campaigning him to succeed… said this last evening on Frank Talk hosted by Frank Mutubila on national television,” I am surprised that Hon MP Magande is not behaving like Hon MMD MPs Jonas SHAKAFUSWA and George MPOMBO who dared the MMD to expel the duo according to HOT FM Radio news of this morning so that by-elections can go on in their constituencies on the date that the Mpulungu MP by-election will be held.

Sadly, I met a woman this week who told me that MAGANDE has done nothing in Chilanga Constituency and this could be why he is not confident to invite a by-election where he can defend his MP position there.

    Be blest.
    _
    Matt…

  52. #66: RB was busy on TV saying the credit crunch affected Zambians, which Zambians have credit cards in Zambia? Busy telling marketeers that they can now lease their stalls or stands in the market, telling them they should be happy that they are now landlords. The biggest maize harvest is not because of RB or Zambians, rather its all the white farmers that have resettled from Zimbabwe. These days RB even refuses to answer questions from the journalist because everything that comes out his mouth makes no sense and very embarrassing. Read the letter magande wrote, its online, if you cant understand that, no wonder you support RB. All I can say is that if RB is your role model then it shows alot about your life. If its not too much to ask, THINK, just for once.

  53. #69 Do you understand what the credit crunch was about? It was not solely about credit cards – I think you are the one who needs to think and do a bit of reading. Maybe your relatives have not produced maize but my bululus in the countryside have and it is partly due to govt policy as well as good weather. I personally dont care who grows the food, the main issue here is the fact that we dont have to import the maize which means that we save money and that is why the price of mealie meal has been coming down which is a tangible result of RB’s rule. Magande lost. Whether you like RB or not Magande was beaten by a very large margin and all we are saying is get over it. To say RB has achieved nothing is patently untrue whether you support him or not.

  54. #69 You must be a PF kaponya from Kulima tower if you dont know that the credit crunch was not just about credit cards. You have access to the internet, please use wikipedia instead of embarrassing yourself and us your fellow Zambians and learn something new today.

  55. #69 What you are saying about the maize harvest is not true. Most of the maize has been produced by small scale farmers. Even if it was true that most of the maize was produced by white farmers from Zim, then the question remains why they choose to come to Zambia rather than somewhere like Australia or UK or Canada where many of them have ancestral links or indeed other countries in Africa. There must be something about Zambia which is attractive and makes them believe that they can build viable businesses here. Lets not diminish the work of our fellow Zambians especially those who toil on the land in order to make cheap political points. Peasant farmers have with the support of the current regime have worked very hard to create the bumper harvest we have just had.

  56. Hey but zambians pali ma comedians! ati the credit crunch couldn’t have affected those without credit cards?!! Silence is golden and when it’s broken you can see rotten stuff coming out of certain individuals.
Anyway, that aside, Magande needs to realise that he is actually denting the name of LPM by insinuating that the late didn’t believe democracy.Let leaders be elected and stop perpetuating this annointing nonsense of yours.

RB hasn’t done that bad but he can do better.Whichever way would make him do better,be it by constructive criticism or praise where it’s due, let’s do that!

  57. Your president is the one that was saying credit crunch. I personally would not use those words because I know there was more involved. The white farmers cannot relocate where they came from, do you think they will receive the same welcome if they went back to England etc. You go to Choma and count how man white men you see in short brown shorts and count the number of trucks on the road with English names. These are not your relatives. Not only this they were literally given land by chiefs and the government because they are white. The money saved from the maize harvest is the one funding RBs useless travels, show me where this money has gone to, schools? clinics? No, dozen babies die because there are no transformers in clinics and you want to preach that RB is performing miracles!

  58. 69 Speechless

Credit Crunch is not Credit Cards. Go and read some books. You are embarrassing us.
Like wise, your alias name! Try and stay Zeeeep….

Credit Crunch is when there is a Financial Meltdown where Financial Institution such Investment Banks, Retail Banks, Mortgage Houses and so forth compress the availability of loans or credit and mortgages.

  59. Example:
Sub Prime Mortgages ( USA) The banks took high risks by giving easy loans to poor people in the USA to buy houses when they could not afford to repay loans. Hence, this resulted into too many defaults

  60. Kadobi 73

Agree with you. RB has not done badly. It only the certain media camps focus on all the negative issues

He is trying to bring investment in Zambia. Unlike those who just want to scare foreign investors. He can never be good at every thing. No country is perfect….

China is out playing the USA, Japan and most EU countries. Who could have thought that? After knowing that its emerging from communism? If China pulls all it’s money from USA, UK & France, these giants would collapse in 7 days. ….

  61. ….Most of the money driving the stock markets is money from China & rich Arab Countries. In the UK Arabs & Chinese people are buying properties like pan-cakes. Real Estate used to be for the Jewish community. But thing are changing. In summery Britain is broke.

  62. #74,man,what’s up with you kanshi? The more you talk, the more you expose your ignorance.Go get some basic data even from google and save your face.RB never said credit crunch affected only those with credit cards. :o Had he said that I’m sure he would have made ‘headlines’ everywhere. What makes you think the white farmers wouldn’t have been welcomed in England etc?Do you honestly think the President needs to save money from maize for him to travel anywhere? And what’s wrong with chiefs or govt giving land to commercial farmers whom you are nowing saying are responsible for the recent bumper harvest? So are you now blaming govt and chiefs for allocating land to these farmers who have given us a bumper harvest or what are trying to say? What has transformers got to do with babies in…

  63. #77, I think honest people know that the man has tried. There’re seems to be few zambians able to see the evil schemes of certain powerful media houses and for this reason such media organizations will continue playing a vital role in influencing the way zambian people perceive their leaders. People should learn to change their minds whenever new facts emerge and map a new way forward. My perception of RB has changed because of what his administration has achieved in less than 2 yrs.I never expected that.I now think the man can do even better now that the credit crunch is over ‘even if most zambians don’t have credit cards’.Lol!

  64. 80 #

Spot On, Every Zambian has a duty to contribute to development. We seem to be too lazy and just blame the politicians all the time. Some of the blogs just come out of people that are so frustrated with life. Hence, they tend to join the band wagon blindly by resorting to insults and demeaning. I do not support any political party in Zambia. But credit has to be given to RB as well as constructive criticism.

We go to school not just to come back and look for a job, but as well as coming back with inspirations, open minds and getting the best out of ourselves

Bill Gates was a drop out at the University. He had a vision that has now come to light the world.

  65. Obama after he finished his first degree, he worked for communities, went to Africa to learn about his family. He ate Ugali (Shima) from his Grand Mother, fetched firewood for cooking and mingled with people in the village. That helped him to be a person that he is today. In his second trip Africa he took Michelle where she too learnt how to eat Shima and fetch wood, drunk “munkoyo” made out of millet

I am not for M’Membe but he started small and has outplayed the government sponsored media in print distribution. To cut the comments short! We need to learn to start from the bottom and work to the top.

  66. #52 I LIKE THIS, STOP HALLUCINATING,IF LEVY HEED THE MASSAGE OF HIS BODY HEWOULDN’T HAVE STRAINED HIMSELF TO DEATH AT THE EXPENSE OF KEEPING MAUREEN IN STATE HOUSE

  67. #74 SPEECHLESS, LIKE YOUR NAME BETTER REMAIN DUMB THAN EMBARASSING YOURSELF.THOSE FARMERS YOU TALKING ABOUT IN CHOMA ARE MAINLY IN TOBBACCO GROWING.IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT A PEASANT FARMER HAS PRODUCED VISIT YOUR NEAREST FRA DEPORT WHO YOUR WHITES DO NOT DEAL WITH.

  68. Way forward Magande join PF and you could possibly become Deputy finance minister in the 2012 cabinent, now thats a new beginning .Quit crying over spilt milk and move on.

  69. But Zambia is not a monarchy!

It is a democracy at government level as well as party level.

So how does a dying president choose a successor in a democracy when it is clear that an election at party level will need to be held?

If this is what Levy really did, then it was a foolish move and unbecoming of a legal professional.

Magande is twice as foolish for still sticking to this idea which has no place in a democracy.

Let the will of the people prevail and not some useless succession idea concocted in a small room at cabinet office whose intention is to break democratic process.

  70. I like the idea of levy anoiting Magande as MMD president. I like Magande and I think he did very well as Finance minister- I don’t doubt that his presidency would equaly be superb to say the list. However, am sorry to say to him and all his allies that Zambia is not a kingdom, not a monarch. Here we do not annoint presidents, we elect them. So whether it was Levy’s wish or not, Magande would have to face elections and do to so must personally win the trust and friendship of his party and the people.
It’s unforyunate to hear your mates in the party shadowed you.

  71. Mr Magande the problem of African Presidents is that they are surrounded by bootlickers. Right now RB’s BOOTlickers cannot allow you to be Presido. Because they will lose OUT. Rememeber Tetamashimba and Mulongoti forced RB to be President in order to use state machinary and funds to campaign as RB was the acting President then. What happened the two heavily benefited with cabinet posts including Namugala. So RB’s children & His Cabinet Bootlickers like Daka, Ronnie, Mulongoti, Namugala, Namulambe now, Munkombwe etc will never let you take over. I pity U.

  72. Magande would have done better than MR HERB. He is intelligent. Your time will come don’t worry It is sad LPM is dead and died before he made you vice president

  73. Mr. Magande, I am a chilanga resident and have seen absolutely no development in the area. You even have/had an excellent opportunity to influence Lafarge to participate in community developmental issues. We have a major water pipe from Kafue passing through chilanga but majority of residents dont have access to clean water for drinking. You must be hallucinating sir. Some roads have never tasted tar, let alone the blade from the graders at least to even them out. We now have private individuals spending their own money to grave the roads. You were minister of finance. Such influence to develop your constituency to become a gem of Lusaka province. Please don’t insult us and me particularly. You are simply a failed member of parliament. Call me if you need to discuss these issues further…

  74. magande shud not think mwanawasa owned the MMD,the president of party is chosen by members of mmd,and the people of zambia chose the president,so he shud not start crying foul play now, mwanawasa is dead, magande shud just be royal to his party other than insulting his president,if he got integrety?he shud resigne, looks like he hasnt got any…..

  75. From what the bloggers have posted on this blog, Zambia could have seen the mother of all plunders with Magande in state house. He has to come clear with his (and LPM’s) “Image builders” in the name of The Post and their Zambian Airways as well the Mathani connection.

  76. #93 Storm- No single MP can develop his area. It is government responsibility to do so, but unfortunately our government only develops words to defend its ineffectiveness.

  77. #95 Crooked I U have asked the Question:

What exactly do people want to be in government for? Just give me a sentence… The Answe is ” In Afirca People want to be in Govt., for personnal benefit, filling their bellies full, getting jobs they cannot get on the open market and not to serve the masses as this is Secondary”.

  78. Magande, tellme something. be honest, what was levy meaning when he said he doubted living beyond 2011. What was his greatest fear was to take him away?

Is it the corrupt service chief and all those in Jail and the others that awaited Jail like FTJ?

Is it Natural causes and the Doctors told him so in advance? remeber he had a history of stroke?

or who did levy blame to scheme taking away his life?

  79. I don’t ascribe to the presidential preferences (annointed) to take over when the incumbent steps down (or indeed dies like in this case). That is why some presidents end up puppets of the former heads of state! If Magande is good, it is not for LPM to impose on us but he should be proud to be president because he won an election clean, not annointed. He should above such cheap politics. Personally, i don’t want to hear this man talk about this issue again.

  80. It is clear knowledge to every one that Mr Magande pitted against Sata the latter was going to be walloped hands down. And all those who truly love MMD could not dare taking the risk of featuring Magande or they were going to lose their jobs. This is the same politics in the pact; unless people in the pact want the pact to lose they should not endorse HH. HH was strong in the pact earlier pinning his hopes on the slim hope that the degree issue was going to succeed thereby sidelining Sata clearing the way for him to lead the pact. Now that things are different HH’s feelings are not the same. What more with the outbursts of Dr guy scott. If Mr Magande is serious with his ambition he must exercise patience.I saw some wisdom in him so he must not spoil himself by being over ambitious. There’s…

  81. Iam worried man. The opposion may not save us from MMD at the rate we are going. Cant these fellows meet and be open to one another to pick one level headed individual to stand 2011.The way I see things I may not partake in the voting as doing so will be a waste of my vote if this vote wont be able to remove this CHIDOYO called MMD.

  82. This shows MMD does not believe in democracy starting at the top. Is it sucession by appointmemnt or election by majority vote?

  83. Mr Magande,

I am aware of the odds the situation presents to you, however please move forward. What late President saw in you is so evident and soon the zambian public will see it. SO GO GET THEM- as they say time & chance happen to them all its all about ceasing the moment.

You are the next president of the Republic of Zambia.

  85. According to Magande, the direct word he heard from Mwanawasa was that there were TWO names, his and another. He NEVER heard from Mwanawasa that HE ALONE was the annointed successor. So the rest is hearsay, and the fact that those who told him to prepare to take over have kept silent means that their evidence is inadmissible. So, what if the other name that LPM had in mind was the man whom he actually appointed to deputise him? Has it ever occured to Magande that he would be second fiddle to Mwanawasa’s Vice President?

  86. Compared to Banda, Magande is still young. He showed political immaturity by failing to strike a deal with Banda who as far as I know was the man with ‘ifibala’ (farm) whom LPM meant to succeed him. Magande would have stayed in government, served for the 3 years to 2011, and then if MMD lost he would have taken over from Banda and with his experience, he would be the man to beat in 2016. But, no, the man wanted to eat half cooked nshima before Banda had cooked. Politics is a matter of timing. Cometh the hour, cometh the man!

  87. Ya ya guys , Even me my Father has said I should be president in 2016. So no one should compete with me coz Kambongolo has been appointed by his father. Come 2016 , Kambongolo is in state house.

    Mhhh ikali bane…

  88. ANNOUNCEMENT

In the calendar of the Lord henceforth, Peter Ng’andu Magande and George Mpombo are no longer privileged members of the ruling MMD. All incentives, rights and services have been instantly withdrawn. On the advise of the sponsoring party MMD which has notified the Speaker of the August House, his mandate is to declare their seat vacant. In this vein, private citizens are at liberty to individually deal with them in a manor most desired if anything is being held on the basis of personal issues. We wish them wellness and happiness in an open society of options.

  89. :d Magande’s cry over the presidency is not only childish but it also shows that he (Magande) does not understand or believe that in a democracy leadership is attained through elections not through handpicking. With due respect, Magande cannot be trusted with national leadership. Remember how he betrayed Late Anderson Mazoka!
