Sata is 2011 PACT candidate – PF

THE Patriotic Front (PF) in Lusaka has declared that its president Michael Sata will stand as presidential candidate on the PF-UPND pact ticket in next year’s general elections.

But UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma said anybody within the pact is free to make choices of who they deem fit to stand as pact presidential candidate in next year’s elections.

PF Lusaka Province chairperson Paul Moonga said in an interview yesterday in Lusaka that the decision is non-negotiable, and that those who feel that Mr Sata is a wrong person to lead the pact are free to go their own way.

Mr Moonga accused UPND of being insincere, and said even after winning the Chilanga parliamentary by-election, it has not gone back to PF to thank its partner for helping it scoop the seat.

He said PF campaigned alone in Mpulungu, and there was no sign of the pact as the UPND concentrated on campaigning in Chilanga where they had fielded a candidate.

“We expected UPND to campaign for us in Mpulungu as we vigorously campaigned for them in Chilanga. Mr Sata told me personally that I had to ensure that UPND wins that seat, which they did,” he said.

Mr Moonga said all the wards in Chilanga are his party’s strongholds and that there is no way UPND would have won the seat without the help of PF.

He said it is wrong for UPND members to continue claiming popularity when it is obvious that PF has far more members than UPND, and can win the general elections on its own.

Mr Kakoma, however, denied that his party did not show gratitude to PF for the efforts it put into ensuring a victory for UPND

He said shortly after the Chilanga victory, UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema held a press briefing where he thanked everyone who had made it possible for the UPND candidate Cosmas Moono to win the seat.

  5. Paul Moonga ( making announcment is obviously very dull! How can PF make any announcement ragarding the presidency of the pact? Surely such an announcement should be made by the Pact for it to be valid.

    The pact has reached a cross road and all their hard work could be undone due to uncontrolled announcments from overzealous, job seeking, narrow minded cadres.

    Moonga says “those who think Sata is wrong candidate are free to leave”. So what if they do leave (including UPND Mp’s/supporters) and you end up losing the ability to form a majority government? What will your rhetoric have achieved?

    Think strategically, look at the big picture and put your foolish personal ambitions aside. Either that or we will be stuck with the likes of RB and Veteran aka Patriot.

    No single party will have an outright majority in the next parliament, meaning there will always be an opportunity to renegotiate with other parties if either PF or UPND renage on post election agreements (E.G. power sharing of key cabinet posts)

    Therefore, it may not really matter who has the presidency at this point – lets focus on our priority of removing RB and steering the country in the right direction.

    Perhaps the Pact could consider the Kenyan power sharing model (imperfect as it is )between Odinga and Kibaki. Kibaki is 79, so he will retire in 2012, at which point Raila Odinga is likely to win elections ( If not derailed by Kenyatta).

    UPND/HH could back Sata and then after 4 yrs HH could stand as Sata slows down.

  13. 10 continued. This would be unprecedented in the History of Zambia’s political democracy and it would usher a new level of tolerance and political civilisation. Sata could retain an advisory, senior stateman role and his place in history would be booked.

    It would also act as a good check to HH, knowing that there was another strong candidate in the wings able to successfully challenge for the presidency should they not adhere to the development and democratic programme.

  22. The major problem with the Pact is that they have been infiltrated by MMD. Each time there is some semblance of unity out pops some strategically placed MMD infiltrators to spoil everything. Some time early this year HH warned pact supporters that the movement has been infiltrated and that soon their will be some discontents making some divisive statements. This is exactly what he meant. MMD is desperate to hold on to power and will do anything to achieve that. With this in mind there is no hope for the pact. They have to adopt a different strategy otherwise the sooner they disband the better.

I do hope that the pact take over because they have demonstrated that they have the vision and unity building skills to move the country forward. I am particularly impressed by the leaders of the two party who are showing a commendable spirit of self-sacrifice by putting the interests of the country above their own personal ambitions.

    The United Party for National Development (UPND) in Livingstone has maintained that PF president Michael Sata is not the best candidate if the UPND/PF Pact is to win the 2011 general elections.

    Livingstone UPND district treasurer Winason Nguni said Mr Sata was rejected in Western, North-Western, Central, Copperbelt rural, Eastern and Southern provinces.

    “Mr Sata is losing local Government elections in Northern and Luapula provinces. From where will Mr Sata get his votes to win next years’ elections? Mr Sata has more than 20 members of Parliament he calls rebel MPs and he has refused to reconcile with them on account that they participated in the National Constitution Conference (NCC),” Mr Nguni said.

  37. Mr Nguni maintained that Mr Sata was not more popular than the UPND president Hakainde Hichilema and therefore Mr Sata should not become an automatic choice as UPND-PF pact presidential candidate for the 2011 general elections.

An example is of Idi Amin of Uganda who was very popular, Germany had Hitler. He too was very popular.     He maintained that good leadership had nothing to do with how popular someone was.

  47. Dr Mudenda@38 you are spot on. The number one criteria is not popularity but leadership qualities. The right leader should be able to unite the country, cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with donars, inspire and direct national economic revival, portray a good image of Zambia internationally and equally important for me, should not have links to the previous failures of the past governments.

    Can whoever is in charge of PR for Sata provide LT and other media bodies with a picture that brings out his good features, the one above is laughable.

  79. Honestly, pf cadres do not think people are so blind like you. In 2006 your candidate was least 3 in Chilanga. The race was between upnd and mmd and the winner Magande was just declared in 2008 after a re-count. Magande won Cap Moono by 50 votes after a re-count hence him Magande could not contest the seat this time around because he knew that he never won it. PF candidate was no where close to the race in 2006, as such I wonder why these pf Kaponyas want to throw mud at others when they lose. If it is true that pf helped UPND in Chilanga, then why was Moonga not aware of that fact, hence it had to take the whole lot of MC Sata to tell him that PF helped, it really shows that this party has no structures only illegal appointments.   86. Yes, Zambia needs change of direction. Unfortunately Sata, especially with the current constitution in place, is not the right person to implement that change. That is the reasoning of most raational thinking Zambians and as long as some diehard PF cadres insist on having Sata as pact presidential candidate the pact issue is going nowhere. The pact will only work if it is led by HH or anyone else from PF other than Sata. This is the real issue at hand and that is the reason for the deadlock. MMD are deliberately stiring up things so as to force Sata’s candidacy of the pact because that is the election strategy they have prepared for. They are worried about facing anyone else hence the panic!

    You can manupulate parties sometimes like you did to UNIP ans FDD but you cant manipulate parties all the time ..like you will fail to manipulate PF.

Are you going through hard times in your own personal life? Sit back and reflect on your life, take some time off your computer or phone and concentrate all your efforts in addressing challenges in your life. Spending all your time campaigning for Sata, HH, RB or calling supporters of a party you don’t support all sorts of names will not help you in any way. You will not influence the outcome of the 2011 elections no matter how hard you try, so please get a life.
