Let’s Talk About Football

Share

By Daimone Siulapwa

FINALLY, the date for the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) annual general meeting has been set, which is March 26.

As was possibly expected, there are a lot of reactions from many stakeholders. As they say, football, or soccer as the Americans would call it, is almost a religion in Zambia although going by the attendance at many local football matches, that is far from the truth.

Maybe talk about it being a number one sport, and you would be closer to the truth.

Anyhow, for many soccer loving Zambians, the holding of the annual general meeting should result in an end to the squabbles that have rocked Football House, which led to president Rupiah Banda’s intervention and indeed that of FIFA.

The current FAZ president Kalusha Bwalya has got everything to do with the squabbles that have led to the creation of two national football executives, one led by himself and the other by Andrew Kamanga.

Ever since Kalusha entered football administration in this country as first vice-president to seasoned administrator Teddy Mulonga, who is now Permanent secretary at the ministry of Youth, Sport and Child Development, matters at Football House have never been the same, it has been one wrangle after another.

It is common knowledge in football circles that Kalusha never used to get along with Teddy Mulonga, and did almost everything within his “books of tricks’ to undermine his boss. Even the decision to contest the presidency of the Confederation of Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) was ill-advised and ill-timed. That he only got two votes is testimony to that.
But this is a man who never learns. As if that is not enough, he now wants to go for executive positions in both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the world soccer governing body (FIFA).

To most people that know Kalusha, this is not surprising. The moment he decided to contest for the post of FAZ vice-president, it was quite evident that he was aiming for the top job. While as a footballer, it was difficult to predict Great Kalu move’s, as an administrator, the opposite is the case, you can easily tell where he wants to go next.

But who does this guy think he is to think that he deserves to be both in CAF and FIFA at the expense of seasoned football administrators like Danny Jordaan who helped organize arguably one of the most successful World Cup’s in FIFA history – the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Well, if Kalu had even displayed a bit of skill administrative-wise, everyone would have been happy to support him. Well, it would be good for the country to have a Zambian in CAF and FIFA, although one doubts whether at this stage, Kalu has the interest of the country at heart. If he had, he would have been resident here as FAZ president to oversee the development of the game even if the position is not full-time.

Anyhow, our Kalusha, as if the mess he has created back home is not enough, wants to go for the big ones. Well, let us just say good luck!

But back to the FAZ AGM, we expect nothing short of sanity to prevail in Kitwe where the meeting has been scheduled. Again, why the choice of Kitwe when the most centrally located venues are Kabwe and Lusaka, no one knws? Perhaps they think that representatives of small clubs will be unable to travel there, which is wishful thinking anyway.

Looking at the developments in local football, it is very evident that the majority of FAZ councilors want Kalusha out. And the best thing for him to do is to quit while he can. The fact that there is a large section of affiliates willing to pass a vote of no confidence is good reason enough for him to resign. What is happening to Kalu is not different from what is happening to the Arab world where citizens are calling for the removal of their leaders. The only difference is that this is football and that is politics. But the common denominator is that majority of people are dissatisfied ; it is time for Mr Kalusha Bwalya to go. Really, there is not much for him to worry about. As a player, his legacy is intact, everyone recognizes him as one of the greatest footballers that not only this country, but also the continent has produced. He will always have a place in this country’s history.

But as an administrator, it must be said, it is a little sad that he has failed to live-up to the expectations. And with that, the best thing for him to do is to throw in the towel at the Kitwe meeting and admit that “guys, I tried my best, but my best, was not good enough.”

  1. fooball in zambia has stagnated since kalusha got involved in management. time has come for zambian soccer to be reborn, kalusha bwalya rest in peace

  2. why is this article titled “lets talk football” when its a tirade against the Great Kalu? ba Siulapwa if you have nothing better to do, go and drink tujilijili. pathetic attempt at analysis

  3. Where is Kalusha anyway?? The Kenya friendly is in a mess, the national techncal team’s bench is all oevr the place, our national teams are being knocked out of competitions etc…. and not a single comment from the guy. Is he busy campainng for his caf/fifa canditure or what??
Ya shani kanshi, posako amano boyi……pa last abena simatta ( hope i have spelt this name correctly) balamoneka kwata bamano sana ka!!!!!

  4. I think this author of this story is bais and unfair.I think ever since we lost the zambia national perished in Gabon zambian football has never been the same. The zambian national team has failed to live that standard expected.E.g we have player like mbesuma who can be found drinking chibuku ku lwanshya.Kalu can go i`m not disputing that but i guess that will never sort out anything.Bring in kamanga simaata nothing will change. What zambia need is to inspire the young zambians to dream big and thange their mind set as that would help them to have a good perception towards the good game.

  5. This is the most useless article cn on this blog. you say majority councelors are for VONC bt you go on to contradict your self by calling for his resignation. why cant you go on an humiliate him with the vote since you ar sure that you will difit him. Kalu is an example of determined people jst look at all our former footballers. some are selling pool tokens in bars while others casual underground workers in the mines. And here is someone who tries to make a difference, we pull him down.

  6. Good analysis, its better to get out when you fail be a good manager, dont’ behave like these polititians who cling to power until they are forced out or killed. I think the article has brought out what most fooball fans wanted to hear..

  7. FTJ i totaly agree with you when you say footballers to dream big now here is a player (KALU) who dreamed big when he was a player and neva disappoited the nation. bt now that he is retired pipo want him to stop dreaming big. Football is all he knows since he was a baby and now we want to push him out of it. Do we expect him to go to UNZA and start another profession. NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

  8. Last night as i watched Soccer Africa on DSTV, the Kenya friendly has been “stolen” by South Africa said Thomas Mlambo. The panelist were talking about contracts being signed for these friendlies to avoid last minute withdrawals. Mamadu Gay rubbed it in by saying Kenya was wise enough to go where the money is. This shows a serious lack of administration skills. Look at our rankings in world football. Speaks volumes. The guy is using his post at FAZ for personal gain and not for the football fraternity in Zambia.

  9. Bring sima simata. We will see if zambia will win the africa cup and the world cup.We are watching and observing.Time will be the judge. There is nothing wrong for Kalu to aspire for greater office.Unless you not ambitious like most of our footballer. Can someone tell me please what zambia has won if at the so called our best.Who was the FAZ president?

  10. The article is a typical Zambain mentality. “Pull him down so that we may be on e same level of poverty.” Zambian football has been on the decline for a long time. It has not declined because of Kalu. ZCCM that sponored and supported half of the teams on the copperbelt is no longer there. Look at Mufulira Wanderers, Power, Nchanga, Nkana, Kabwe Warriors etc – these teams were well organized and produced great footballers.
Kalu has tried to keep find good deals. He can be in S/Africa and still know what is going on in Zambia. I am here in USA I know a lot probably than most people in Zambia as to what is happening there.
With the mentality we have of “ukufilila munsega”, “sangwapo” we will always be behind.

  11. All you pipo saying football standards are going down regardless of Kalu are just pessimists.
we are a nation of great skilled footballers needing the right mangment and direction. Give us a real leader at FAZ and you will see wonders.

  12. who the hell are you yourself ka Author? stop writing your opinions as though they are facts.
Teddy mulonga was a senior member of the FDD management and Govt was pumping so much money in football which was landing in the hands of an opposition senior member so they wanted their own person in football. they push kalusha in football administration and what he has had are political tantrums from people who are and were offended by the govt stance. The Evalisto kasunga executive barred jealousy simataa from contesting the vice presidency, simataa by then was a senior member of PF and deputy spokesperson. Simataa diverted his anger on kalu without looking deep in the water to see the reasons and Mulonga was equally not happy with the govt decision to support kalu they then teamed up to fix…

  13. #14 I totally agree with you, Zambians never want anyone to do better than them. Too much PHD mentally Ma Zambian. If you look at all FAZ execuitives except Tom Mtine’s, none have worked because people are always fighting. Bring Simata and Kamanga Zambian will still make noise.

  14. This Siulapwa may not articulate burning issuez very well, but why do I get a feeling thoze calling him namez are blind loyalists of our gret Kalu?

  15. FAZ should iron their differences so that football improves in the country.Alot of tax payers money is spent on soccer but the performance keeps going down.sad.

  16. Daimone you such a useless hater,as the writer of this article you were supposed to stick within the contents of your headline but you went out of hand and just showed how your foolish hate you for Kalu ,if you don’t aim high in life that’s your problem Kalu wants to fulfill his dreams so no one can stop his passion to that, this some bullcrap writting shame.

  17. I have read the first paragraph and decided to stop…..it is the usual half-baked reasoning from an author whose only reference material is a jaundiced weekly tabloid. Let us grow up and stop pulling down any Zambian who dares dream big!

  18. :(( Ka author wasebana am sure inchito eyi yapa chikaya very dull in the way u articulate issues very shallow minded yaba but uli chikopo iwe limbi ama pepala wakwata yaku forga mwati ya zoona
??? the way u just arrange u English ma!!! that’s why ur story is so pathetic and childish the subject is different from what you talking about no basis in ur story I don’t blame you but I blame the one who gave u the platform…. My friend mukapata muka naka is the man Great Kalu the mighty son of Zambian and Africa as whole go burn in hail with your hatred fool!!!!

  19. Zambians with their PULL HIM DOWN mentality never cease to amaze. I shudder to hear a Zambian slander another but praise a foreigner whom he knows very little about.

Problems in FAZ have always been there under every administration since 1991 when thieves took over the country because football has been used for political gain.

What did Teddy Mulonga achieve even before the arrival of Kalusha Bwalya? Zero (FAZ headed by Mulonga was dissolved in 1998– Kalu was not there)

What did Simaata Simaata achieve even before the arrival of Kalusha Bwalya? Zero
(SOCCER trainers in Ndola have asked Zambia Football Coaches Association (ZAFCA) general secretary Simataa Simataa to resign because of his earlier statements that he could not work with FAZ president Teddy Mulonga. 1998)

  20. Is mulonga a seasoned administrator ? Jealous can blind people. You could be related to humphrey siulapwa so it explains your biased analysis.

  21. Teddy Mulonga Executive:

Cops quiz dissolved FAZ executive members: 28 May 1998

Police have started quizzing members of the dissolved Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) executive over the “misapplied” K789 million which was part of the K2.8 billion given to them to prepare the national team for Burkina Faso.
A source at the Lusaka Central Police station disclosed yesterday that two members of the executive had so far been interviewed by police officers from the fraud squad.

  22. 3 June 1998
    ________________________________________
    Ex-FAZ appeal thrown out

The dissolved Teddy Mulonga led Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) executive’s appeal to the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) against its dissolution has been thrown out.

The NSC meeting chaired by its board chairman James Luhana which started around 16: 00 hours yesterday and ended at 18: 30 hours ruled that the decision by the Council’s disciplinary committee to dissolve the Mulonga executive be upheld.

  23. #3 and 6 You speak sense. Its a pathetic attempt at analysis. Analysts like these dont help the nation go forward. This may only serve their PHDs. And like Mule #25 points out, Zambians rarely praise their own but are so quick to tell you about Arsene Wenger, Wayne Rooney Ronaldo as if they know these guys. They think they live with these guys just by mentioning their names. What they fail to realise is that familiarity breeds contempt. The heroes dont become useless just because they are in your neighborhood.

  24. worship the foreigner! i cannot exactly pinpoint the stage at which we zambians became this way. was it because of tata kk’s humanism? then it must have really messed as up! this so called author ( for lack of a better word) of this article and bloggers who support him are actually reinforcing this inferiority complex in supporting a foreigner, jordaan, over their own kalu all because of hatred in my view. with the kind of resources, financial, structural etc which jordaan had at his disposal, you DO NOT know to what heights kalu can scale. but with the limited resources and support, he still endeavours to make something of it. which is more than i can say for people of your type!!

  25. #14, yes its true most of u foreign based guys know more about watsup in our country than the majority but u know what, thats only a fact because there is too much poverty that most pipo have little time to seek the much knowledge that u may claim to have, food on the table firts, twalalyenshi?… And by the way, u guys pliz, help our boy, the Former Great, Kalu, find him a job atleast there in SA where he wants to live. Am sure there are jobs even for boys like him without academic papers. He has failed at FAZ, get him a job he can manage to handle…

  26. Simataa Simataa fights whoever is in FAZ as long as he is not part of the executive, For instance,

“Simataa petitioned the election of Mulonga and three other members of executive, Andre Mtine, George Kasengele and Henschel Chitembeya who were in the executive that was allegedly dissolved in May 1998.”

  27. What is happening in FAZ is very much a resemblace of our political national leaders. Abusing their positions to earn a living. Leading FAZ is supposed to be a service and not a source of livelihood. The problem with Kalu is that he didd not seem to prepare for life after football. I mean earning a living after football. So Kalu seem to be relying on FAZ to earn a living. Its a pity becoz Kalu lived in Europe where he should have learnt how ex-footballers invest there money for a living after football.

  28. BAFANA BAFANA MUST JUST PLAY AGAINST ORLANDO PIRATES…

BAFANA BAFANA MUST JUST PLAY AGAINST ORLANDO PIRATES…

BAFANA BAFANA MUST JUST PLAY AGAINST ORLANDO PIRATES…

BAFANA BAFANA MUST JUST PLAY AGAINST ORLANDO PIRATES…

BAFANA BAFANA MUST JUST PLAY AGAINST ORLANDO PIRATES…

  29. I am dissapoointed with Daimone Siulapwa. As a Zambian for you to place Danny Joordan over a fellow Zambian is disappointing. Why do we Zambians hate each other so much? Danny Jordaan did not personally organise the world cup. Danny Jordan is not perfect. Kalu may not have lived to everyone’s expectation but he is our boy. The Kenya saga is a betrayal by Kenya and nothing to do with FAZ. The South African FA has not been spared the embarrasement as they also failed to secure the Burkina Faso game and opted to buy a match with Kenya a 140 something ranked team. Kalu may not be perfect but we cant take away his achievements.

  30. MULE #37 – STOP embarrassing yourself and make a mature contribution. How long you guys will go on bashing Simataa as if he got your wives! You speak for Kalusha as if you know him very well. C’mon, palifimo bushe? Limbi pali efyo tatwaishiba ka? Muletwebako! For me my conclusion is this, all those guys who continue to refer to Simata even if the topic is Kalusha are narrow-minded dull chaps who really have nothing meaningful to contribute to the debate. Stop wasting people’s time if you have nothing to say. We are tired of your rants about Simataa even when he is not the subject of discussion. You all sound like broken records. Please use your ****ing brains and say something intelligent for once…!!!

  31. #40 JOE KATAPA – I’m really with you about the need to love each other and support each other as Zambians no matter what. However, there is no contest between Kalusha and Danny Jordan. Danny did not organise the world cup alone, but so is Kalusha supposed to inspire his team to deliver. What has happened is that FAZ has been plunged into crisis after crisis since he took over. We have never had this level of crises in FAZ ever since independence. Why do you think that is so? Kalusha is not a good football administrator. It is exactly attitudes like yours which end up us voting into State House people hwo don’t deliver just because they are one or another similar to us. Zambia is bigger than one person. Kalusha has failed, it is time for him to leave honourably. We are tired!!

  32. H e might have been once been the great on the field but management is another story. Someone close to great Galu should let him know that he shouldn´t even go for FIFA post he is already talking about cos he is going to be a big failure. How do you go for FIFA when you can not even manage Fax? Bwezani logic, typical!!!!!!

  33. This author is dull and writes from anger/ hatred.
    1) Positions in CAF/FIFA are not a preserve of certain people. Nothing wrong in presenting your self for election if you feel you have the abilities.
    2) Jordan presided over the Local Organising Committee with the blessings and help of the entire nation ( South Africa). It was a national cause. FIFA was in south Africa to ensure things went well. He operated in an environment of unit, hence the success.
Of course the author is ignorant about Danny’s failures here in South Africa. It will serve you well to do a google search and you find that he failed to make it in ploitics (ANC). He has been antagonisng with Irvin Khoza Local Organising Committee Chairman. At some stage it had to take the intervention of President Zuma to calm things

  34. Remember also that Kalu was a member of the LOC.
As regards CAF positions Danny Jordan has since withdrawn his CAF candidancy and he is concentrating on the FIFA vacancy. This leaves Kalu with a huge chance. So trying is better than standing by. The Zambia system of PHD is wrong.
Already I sense danger with the Kamange interim. They are campaigning to takre over FAZ and yet they were voted to take care of FAZ affairs and Facilitate for election. Should the vote of no confidence go through which I strongly doubt, flesh electons should be conducted. It doesnt necesarily mean that the entire Kamanga group will go through. The issue of place the vote of no confidence first on the agenda is a wrong. Council meetings start with Quorum ascertaining, President’s speech and more importantly:

  35. the general secretary and Treasurer’s reports. Its from matters arising that the delegates demand answers for issues raised on the performance of the entire executive. Passing a vote of no confidence before giving the executive chance to report let alone answer to querries is bleach of the constitution.
The calling for clubs not to play games before the AGM is held is equally a gross bleach of the constitution. How can you affiliate as a member of an association and there after you refuse to abide by their authority. Now when they suspend you, you say bad admnistration. The issue of referees affiliating directly to FAZ is a directive from FIFA. How can the AGM decide on a directive from a high authority? Thats insurbordination. Lets be level headed as we try to resolve issues. BRAVO

  36. # 38 Dawa1
Kalu is loaded. He owns a very beautiful block of new flats between kalingalinga and sunnigdale, near the ghana embassy/residence

  37. It is important to understand God gives football talent to different people …it is not based on money or location.. Remember when the mines managed football groups from schools, rural areas & townships Zed got the best talent. Plus a good footballer is not necessarily a good manager or coach loo at Beckham.

Football helps the youth have discipline, confidence, get educated and sometimes get a way out of poverty like Brazil. Look at the way the Americans have used their football for encouraging the youth. Tournaments should be on TV for football teams from schools where talent can be spotted for international matches. FAZ should be building stadiums instead of depending on the govt for revenue. The CEO of Football in Zed needs to learn to have a vision that looks beyond themselves…

  38. Mind typo meant… Plus a good footballer is not necessarily a good manager or coach look at Beckham’s failures in America.

  39. # 54 footbal strategy, you are dreaming. Where in the world has an FA built a stadium. & what has Beckham failed in US Which simata or yourself has done in your village. ?

  40. Daimone Siulapwa stop dreaming and come to your senses.lets us wake up and tackle the problems to Zambian football not only football even rugby, volleyball, netball and other sports from the roots not from the branches.you see daimone back in the days we used to have proper i mean proper districts school football, netball, volleyball etc leagues starting at primary then basic and secondary schools that why we used to have school boys playing for the national teams example manfred chabinga, moses masuwa ,john lungu and the famous bernard makufi from chaboli secondary school, andrew sinkala from kabundi secondary school kelvin (malaza) mutale from samfya scecondary school.my question to my dear reporter where is the districts school leagues in Zambia?go around lusaka you will find that some schoo

  41. #54 FAZ should be building stadiums? Takwaba! Stadia are built by Clubs and business entities. Money plays a big role in identifying and nurturing talent. Its the moneyed who sponsor talented players and lead them to exposure. Charles Johnson and Kalusha were identified by big businessman Sauerland who took tem to Europe. A good footballer is not necessarily a good manager should not mean all good footballers cant be good managers. There are so many good footballers who have become great managers! Beckham is still playing he is not yet a manager

  42. Very dull “analysis”. Please let us not abuse words. What analysis when this empty tin of a writer is busy just projecting his misplaced hatred for Kalu? Grow up and recognise the need to promote your own nationals. Even that funny looking Jordaan was busy courting the likes of Kalu to be soccer ambassadors for SA when organising the world cup. Elyo imwe ubukopo you just get confused for nothing.

  43. PHD mwe bantu, this writer has no shame at all!!! BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU to the writer!!! What is wrong with Kalu to want to step up for the higher position? Nothing….so what is the big deal? Is it because it is Kalu and not Andrew Kamanga or Simataa? Zambian mentality should be flushed in the toilet as it is so retarded, a person who dreams big is likely to achieve his dream, if you have achieved your personal achievement as a jounalist at Lusaka times, good for you! Don’t just go on dragging others with your contentment, let those who want to move further do so…. the sky is the limit for everyone!!

  44. yeeeeee!!!!!!!! vibanthu vinyake vili nga vinchebe! if kalu was like them we wouldnt even have watched our boys on supersport like we do now! THE “PHD” WE WITNESS FROM ‘THEM’ IS SMELLING GAGA! CHIMATE CHIMATE alahh ukoo! Lekeni KALU atulange.

  45. Its a one sided story. yellow journalism. Look like the author was writing out of emotions. He has messed up by deliberately ignoring the successes of the Kalu EXCO. A typical PHD syndrome. I thought the issue of Kalu’s stay in S.A was long sorted out. In case you have forgotten FAZ presidency is not a full-time job. The only persons we expect to be at football house 24/7 are the GS,media officer and Mr. Julio Chiluba. I wonder what you will write when/if Kamanga takes over because he is mo9ving to Kenya. In short seperate the Kalu/Simataa beef from developing football ya pa Zed.

  46. Imwe bana mufulira, bana ndola, bana kitwe………this topic is a waste of time? football wont put food on the table, it wont bring medications in our hospitals……! Zambia makula…fi chakolwa fye…win or lose nitu jilijili ? who really gives a damn about zambia soccer?

  47. Woah this blog is great i like studying your articles. Keep up the great paintings! You know, a lot of individuals are hunting around for this info, you can aid them greatly.
