MTN Zambia yesterday launched the broadband internet services, to make it one of the fastest internet service.

MTN Zambia managing director, Farhad Khan said his company had made substantial investment in technology such as easy cable to ensure that the broadband internet was the best on the market with higher speed and reliability.

He said MTN was using integrated network and was offering the third generation (3G) and EDGE technologies.

Speaking at the launch in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Khan said US$200 million was invested to ensure delivery of quality services to its customers.

Mr Khan said moving with global technological trends; internet has become key for business and consumer needs.

“We believe that what is of importance and reliance is the fact that all our subscribers now have access to high speed internet anywhere on the MTN Zambia network.

Equally important is the fact that our customers need not concern themselves about settings and configurations because all the settings are done by us as service providers,” he said.

He said the MTN broadband service was designed in such a way that mobile phones or modem automatically choose the fastest connection available expending on the, capability of the mobile phone or modem.

This also depends on how busy the network would be at that particular time. Mr Khan disclosed that MTN has doubled its subscribers on the network across the country from one million to two million.

  1. This is what we want to hear about Zambia-development not insults .Congtratulations MTN for this achievement and responding to the favourable investment atmosphere prevailing in the country brought about by sound economic managment of the MMD government.

  2. even before this latest development their internet was relatively faster than Airtel so I can imagin how faster it has now become.

  3. We need more players in broadband internet because the costs are just too high and for nothing. Take a look at the rates from Iconnect, Microlink

  4. A few weeks ago a colleague working for Zamtel was telling me their broad band can be offered cheaply to the public, but for the monopoly. Now that MTN is gone Bband, this will compel others like Zamtel to lower prices. It will be a race down hill in terms of prices.

  5. MTN services have deteriorated, in the past, if you called the Call Centre, after 3 rings, you call would be picked and they used to boast about this. These days, you can hold for as long as ten minutes. Regarding 3G and EDGE, I am under the impression Airtel has been offering these for a long time, not that they are any better.

  6. These networks are just bull$hitting about broadband,( they don’t understand it). The expected speed of wireless broadband is 54mbps the if you check their speed it only goes up to 3.6mbps. Most networks will claim that the user device is the one limited, which is not always the case. You can’t even stream a video on youtube and everybody stays happy, NO, let the govt give them FCC rules and standards. It’s either they throttle us too much (which is against the law because it’s stealing). That’s why I never pay for the Internet I use as long as I have my Sim card. It’s still 2g speed. :(

  7. Great news indeed for competition purposes but at K999 per MB, speed is not that important because downloading content in the range of 1GB means spending K999 000 of K1m. With Airtel, I spend K125 000 for GB traffic volume and speeds are not that bad: I average 400Kbps.

  8. \:d/ Great indeed, MTN .But please work on tarrifs, that matters most to commonage. All The Best

  9. WOW, MTN has finally woken up and smelled the coffee. Airtel are going to push them right out of Zambia if they dont jack up their services. Hopefully the fees will be reasonable as well

  10. MTN (Telecel) was the first GSM provider in Zambia. Lack of vision and innovation has almost killed them. They are now trailing behind Airtel in so many ways. Hopefully they have now awaken from their slumber.

  11. In as Much as i appreciate MTN’s endeavors in advancing technology in Zambia, i believe that much has to be done. Why do we always lag behind other countries? Our mobile operators are rolling out 3G networks when the rest of the world is moving towards 4G and throwing away 3G. EDGE, as per standard, allows a download speed of 2 mbps and an uplink of 200 kbps ( Only in instances where compression software are implored – thats when the speeds can be improved a little bit). Thz speeds, as far as internet access is concerned ar below the world rankings (Talk of the 10.29 mbps average for Europe). At this time, we should be having rumors about the 1Gbits/s expected in WiMAX for fixed users and 100 Mbits/s for mobile users, not this 3G crap. Internet nd phone charges are also beyond…

  12. I have enjoyed the blogs on this topic. indeed ICT is the engine of global trade, phones are no longer limited to sms and taliking only but are fully fledged business devices. internet services in zambai are far behind standards downloading is a nightmare. These are issue we should be debating as zambians not insults and i cant assure you that kaponya like blogers have no capacity to contibute to such topic as a result you are likey to have less 40 blogs.

  13. MTN is playing tricks on us. I will report them to zicta. There is no improvement of what so ever in services. Im in kafue and the speed is bad. Very bad.

  14. It took 30minutes to download 2mb…is this the new definition of broadband? you even announce to the world. what a joke!!!\:d/
