Rupiah pleads ignorance over freezing of veep position

Rupiah Banda

President Rupiah Banda has expressed ignorance over reports that the MMD has for the second time frozen the position of Vice-president.

Speaking this morning when he went to file his nominations papers for the MMD Presidency at the Mulungushi International Conference, President Banda says he is not aware of any such development relating to the freezing of the position of MMD vice president.

Mr Banda referred all queries to the party leadership for further clarification on the matter.

He observed that the decision to freeze any party position can only be made by the convention.

The Zambia Daily Mail quoting sources has reported today that the position of MMD vice president has been frozen for the second time ahead of the convention.

Meanwhile President Rupiah Banda has successfully filed in his nomination papers for the MMD Presidency ahead of the party convention slated for Kabwe from the 5th to 7th April, 2011.

Mr. Banda who was accompanied by the first lady and supporters arrived at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre to file nominations at about 10:00 hours amid jubilation from MMD cadres.

And speaking to journalists soon after filing in his nomination papers, Mr. Banda said he was happy that he had successfully filed his nominations and was now ready to battle it out at the forthcoming party convention to be held in Kabwe.

AND The Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has clarified reports suggesting that the party has frozen the position of party Vice president ahead of the forthcoming national convention scheduled for April 5-7 in Kabwe.

Acting MMD National Secretary Chembe Nyangu told Journalists in Lusaka today that the position of party vice president has not been frozen as reported in the Daily mail and that members are free to file in their nominations for the position.

Mr. Nyangu says freezing the position is one of the suggestions that party members have made with regards to stiff competition that is likely to cause disunity in the party.

He has however admitted that there were some intentions from the party leadership to freeze the position adding that the matter will be tabled at the convention for scrutiny.

Mr. Nyangu adds that should the position be frozen at the convention, the decision on what step to take on aspirants who have successfully filed their nominations will be made at the convention.

Republican Vice President George Kunda and former Kabwe Central Member of Parliament Patrick Musonda are the two candidates who have applied to contest the position of party vice presidency.

  1. RB successfully filed his nominations and was now ready to battle it out at the forthcoming party convention to be held in Kabwe’ against who!

  2. He should just plead ignorance full stop. It is saddening that our political landscape has been dragged back into the stoneages. What a disgrace. The day of reckoning will come though, and theres gonna be some serious gnashing of teeth, weaping and wailing. “Sindine – Uza fotokoza ku sogolo, osa chinja statement!”

  3. LT please dont say ”the President has successfully filed his nomination’. This is incorrect or a screwed up way of reporting. There was nothing to stop him from filing in his nomination so where is success?

Instititutional decisions are made out of convenience and best interest. The Party has functioned well since 2005 without party VP. IF President, NS, Chairman, Provincial heads and other auxillary wings exist, the symbolic post could as well remain irrelevant. What a shame Blind followers you’ve been exposed, your leader says he knows nothing about earlier reports, can you justify you empty comments Kaponya.

  5. Why are these guys in MMD sinking so low to extent where they are freezing the position of MMD Veep yet on the other hand they have alowed Patrick Musonda and George Kunda to contest the position. Democracy entails pipo fighting for positions through the ballot box. Its illogical to conclude that the Party will be divided after the convetion if pipo are allowed to contest certain positions. This is the same mistake Levy made when he frooze the position for MMD Veep. In the Arab world dictators are being shown the way but in Zambia this the time we are seriously embrasing dictatorship. What way of doing things. We never learn from our past mistakes.

  6. This opportunistic chap Ala Bee (RB) is crazy. Who is he deceiving by claiming that he is now ready to battle it out at the forthcoming party convention to be held in Kabwe. Even Kaunda was better because atleast he would battle it out with frogs and such organisms. Now Ala Bee is virtually unopposed and so he intends to battle it out against the unknown invisibles

  7. # 4 Tribalist,
Don’t worry about spelling errors, it has been established that the editor at LT is William Banda.

  8. #2.
The filing of nominations is still open till 4th April 2011. You can file in if you want to challenge him.

  9. waste of resources. why hold a covention when u dont want to contest against anyone? why show off that RB has succesfully filed in his nominations when he is a sole canditure.Such headline should been made when Mpombo or someone else has successfully filed in theirs. Not RB who is affaid of his own members.Come on RB tell your party to allow everyone to contest against YOU and see how popular u are in your own Party.RB doesnt like competion coz he knows that he doesnt win.that is why he is affraid of Sata and he has stopped to sleep.

  10. They all seem to be ready to battle it out.Soya himself,Empty Drum Cobra,Under 5,Crocodile,Miyanda,Cosmo,Xavior Chishimba,Nawakwi,TJ………..Wapya munzhi

  11. Honestly who is he gona battle with if he has intimitated all MMD members not to even try to contest MMD presidency otherwise they will loose their jobs in MMD, and now he is freezing MMD veep position to GK only, people what kind of democracy is this? This guy is a tyrant dictator no doubt.

  12. I like the way RB is raising the UPND symbol instead of “the hour” symbol. Way to go RB, Zambia Forward!!

  13. This government will deny and deny then suddenly accept. No we are not selling Zamtel, no Mwanawasa is not dead, no Zamtel will not colapse after Libya. Finance bank did not have clients withdrawing. And a lot of blogers on this site like one id.iot who cannot even comment now are busy being brain washed. These are the facts:
    1. RB goes to the conversion unopposed. Not sure why he is even going there.
    2. RB will get his gratuity despite what the law says.
    3. Zamtel assets will be frozen
    4. The VP position in MMD has been frozen
    5. By 2016 Zambia will be under dictatorship
    6. By the end of 2016 the cpperbelt will be full of holes visible from the moon, highly poluted and with very poor people staring at rundown infrastructure on potholes in all roads.
    7. RB and sons wil be in corupt…

  14. Even me I am not aware that the position of vice-president was put in a deep freezer and I am well placed in the MMD structure. Ni boza chabe ba homo ba pf

  15. #23 kci you are very right..you are like a prophet who knows whats gonna happen in the future…you are the people we want in govt..people who are able to predict what the future holds than all these politicians that we now have in govt

  16. Bane impindi yashila. The hour has finished. Lets re collect 1989 1991. I personally cant accept these Baffuuns whatever to rule for another day. It is a pity, iam now fifty, those days we could have started country wide riots to stop the scourge.By the time they rule another day we will fail to put together the intentons for that revolution. We have completely missed it millions of miles away.

  17. Cut FTJ’s head put it on RB and put RB’s head on FTJ, then Cut Mrs Mwanza’s head put it on Tandi and put Tandi’s on Mrs Mwanza. What couples those could make for year!

  18. I soldly stand my ground that the position of Party Vice President is symbolic and where perceptively it it becomes a potential point of acrimony, disunity, diversion, obstruction, factionalism, a well established and functional national party as MMD has the incentive of reverting to precedence. The Position of VP can and should be frozen as best practice in best institutional position.

  19. As mother and steward of of democracy, the MMD delegates at the convention, with consensus of chain of command would be acting in best party and national interest to move the motion and adopt it at the convention that the party symbolic VP position be frozen until further notice to foster national institutional unity, political galvanization exploiting existing predisposition. Members and and friends of MMD have the moral responsibility to sponsor such proposition to the structure.

  20. Tired of MMD Bull shit. Nyamasoya is not even ashamed with his ka little wife going to Mulungushi filing nomination against himself. UNIP is really back. Chitala you are right. Banya ba mambala aba. Mapolo yao.

  21. Party VP position is symbolic function without which a big nationally serving party such as MMD with institutional structures everywhere has been and should be able to function without this symbolic position. This is why you see titular rgional parties like PF merely appoint their vice Presidents instead of electing them. Every month they are changing VP. last month it was Edwin Lifwekelo the founder of PF, the other day it was Gay Scott, Lubinda, Kabimba and today its Gay Scott again. All this is because its a symbolic position.

  22. Party VP position is symbolic in function without which a big nationally serving party such as MMD with institutional structures everywhere has been and should be able to function.

  23. Self-laudation, as Seniour Citizen oftenly does it, abounds among the unpolished. Your blogs are kind of childish. You are a a tiny little boy trying to be a real Man..but no..you’ll always be at the same level. Just like your father alabee who is still to the ways of governance

  24. Walasa #2. Whom are these guys f.ooling? What is there to battle about when you are the only one. These are the guys who fight for food even when they know for sure that no one else is present. Is there any pride is passing through crookery or “crooks law”?

  25. Insoni # 32,

Chitala is the least person an intelligent blogger would waste time on his rants. The chap is disoriented and demonized with blood of late Dean Namulya Mung’omba on his head. He framed up innocent Mung’omba with the Solo coup that took innocent Dean into his Grave early leaving him disoriented. The blood of Dean is on chitala’s head while the suffering of orphaned children are haunting Chitala. Whatever he touches fails because he is cursed over Mung’omba’s death. He loses all jobs landed. With Gadhafi’s hands now full of his national issues than keeping Chitala on the pay roll of United States of Africa now utopia, the marxist has gotten more disoriented.

  26. IFWE NI CHANGE FYE TULE FWAYA.
    MWAMUKOLO 2011. KINAKOOOO YALUNA.
NA MUDALA WATHU MICHAEL CHILUFYA SATA 2011.
DONT WASTE YOUR VOTES ON SMALL TRIBAL CLUBS.
VOTE SATA AND PF COME 2011.BE PART OF THE BALLOT REVOLUTION.

  27. But how can RB talk about battling it out when he is the sole candidate. Is he engaging in some form of self-pleasuring? He must grow up and calm down. Who does he take Zambians for – i.d.i.ots or what? We know he is the sole candidate so he should not mock the country in that flagrant manner, it’s a show of irresponsibility on his part. He should bow his head and go to wherever the convention is going to be, with shame!

  28. #37 I am not a Chitala supporter. I know if the man was given a Ministerial job he wouldnt have sabailad the way he has done. I mean he was open to say bamufyanta ba mambala and is in hunger now that is why he is calling on Mad dogs founders to regroup and form another bullshit party.

All am saying is that Chitala is right to say MMD has gone beyond dog land in today’s post. Except am shocked he is speaking out today :( He is also an *****ic mambala like Nyamasoya. Chalo cathu mayo………………………..chasila chalo ichi. Munthu ungapange Chiluba kunkhala munzako, of all people? You see, they are even bringing in money for corrupt Investors like Gadafi.

    So what next ZAMTEL.

But Chalo chasila zoona ichi mwe. Dora, sure, Dora hule ija ingankhale Minister ????

  29. At least am impressed with lunatic Senior Citizen today, he’s failed to make a 360 degree turn one this within 24 hours. I’ll wait to see how long he’s prepared to dig his heels-in in defiance of his master and lord RB’s position. Also it would be interesting to note his reaction after they unfreeze the same position. Mr flip flop never fails to amaze me.

  30. #23 KCI I luv u man. Cant the MMD listen to people like you and do some self introspection and perhaps repair things. I grew up on the copperbelt. When I see it now I feel like we are ruled by ghosts not people.

  31. No one really cares about whether the Movement fo Mad Dogs (MMD), have a convention or not. The’re joining UNIP in the history books of this Country. MMD Zwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  32. MMD as a model democratic party takes all kind of propositions and opinions for reflective view from patriotic friends of the party and members alike on variant issues. Overall decision making is at the discretion of mandated leaders and delegates in best national and party interest. It does not mean that opinions in propositions of friends and members are the basis of institutional decision no. MMD and RB have open doors to patriotic views but decision is always collective.

  33. Institutional consensus is what sets MMD apart from titular regional parties like PF driven by utopia and myopia of Mmembe. Where Mmembe says lets alianate and strangulate HH in the pact, Sata buys that. When he said i’m a gay and could connect you to fellow gays movements for funding, the whole PF turned into a homosexuals party without collective view point.

  34. A culture and environment of institutional consensus is what sets MMD apart from titular regional parties like PF driven by utopia and myopia of Mmembe. Where Mmembe says lets alianate and strangulate HH in the pact, Sata buys that. When he said i’m a gay and could connect you to fellow gays movements for funding, the whole PF turned into a homosexuals party without collective view point.

  35. Amazing that there were fights at the model and ruling party nomination centre. Violence broke out during nominations. Remains to be seen what we all have to say about this VIOLENCE.

  36. Pamukolo………..Ninakoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  37. Just browsed through all the posts on this blog, most opposition supporters appear to put emotions before facts, why is that?

  38. Do you think they could carry out such a big decision without your knowledge? Do you think we would believe you? Then rescind the error! We aren’t children!

  39. #23 kci, here are answers to your fiction:
    1. Fiction: RB goes to the conversion unopposed. Not sure why he is even going there.
Fact: If he is unopposed during nominations, he still needs to be confirmed by the convention.
    2. Fiction: RB will get his gratuity despite what the law says.
Fact: The law is being amended legally by our MPs (including opposition), so the gratuity will be perfectly legal. Even Kabimba knows that.
3.Fiction: Zamtel assets will be frozen
Fact: Lap Green assets will be frozen and not Zamtel assets.
    4. Fiction: The VP position in MMD has been frozen.
Fact: No, that decision can only be made by the convention.
    5. Fiction: By 2016 Zambia will be under dictatorship.
Fact: Not at all, unless we are foolish enough to allow Mr Sata to become President.

  40. contd from #57,
    6. Fiction: By the end of 2016 the Copperbelt will be full of holes visible from the moon, highly polluted and with very poor people staring at rundown infrastructure on potholes in all roads.
Fact: By 2016, CB roads and other infrastructure would have been restored and more roads built.
    7. Fiction: RB and sons wil be in corupt…
Fact: Nothing of the sort will happen. The allegations of corruption against Mr Banda and his sons are fiction by those who would practice corruption if they were in power.
    8. Fiction: Finance bank did not have clients withdrawing.
Fact: Some people did withdraw their money, but there was no run on the bank, despite the best efforts of PF and Post to create alarm and panic. To this day people still bank with FBZ as if nothing happened.

  41. #50, It is not about “lekeni Sata ateke”, it is not about Mr Sata’s wish to rule Zambia, it’s about serving the nation. It’s about accepting to be ruled by other ethnic groups.

  42. #58, excellent! Correction: Yes Zamtel,or is it LAP green assetts will be frozen in accordance with the UN resolution. Zambia is oblidged to comply as a UN member. I must add,KCI may find that a little bit hard to comprehend.

  43. #57 – 59. H. H Sata,
Your name is nowhere near the sensible things you always post everytime you blog. I always look for your posts when I am this Lusaka Times

  44. Wheels coming off MMD cranker, they are so confused that every Jim or Jack can issue very serious statements without consulting others. As we draw closer to exist day only a shell of a once mighty MMD would remain. Its another UNIP in making, bloody history always repeat itself.

  45. I think Roten Booty should be taken back to grade one,his coments exposed his mental lapses. He is as dull as he looks.

  46. #61, good question! I may be wrong but i am told it is Guy Scotts reccurent coded message to Mr Sata not to ever reveal what the 2 have been upto in private, lest he gets excited and say the unpalatable………

  47. #61
donchi kubeba means that if the mmd give you money and chibuku just receive as you need those things but don’t tell them where you put your vote. “Donchi kubeba, Guy Scot 2010”

  48. SATA IS A HERO,THE ENTIRE MMD IS AFRAID OF YOU.MR SATA GOD IS ON YOUR SIDE YOU ARE PROTECTED FROM ALL EVILS.BRIAN CHITUWO IS SUPPORTING YOU.ZAMBIANS ARE JUST WAITING FOR D_DAY.VIVA SATA VIVA PF

  49. Zambian are too docile, too ignorant and sometimes too Stup…d to articulate things. Most people have no idea what they want and hence can’t stand for anything, but would go for a packet of sugar, forgetting about tomorrow. I cant understand how the brains of MMD militants work because they don’t seem to hope for anything other than just a ride on a truck, a bottle of beer and tijilijili. Will these things keep you in future and your children? How can one support a party with no progress for the country. How can a country develop with these kind of people. SORRY!!!!!

  50. RB is upbeat after he successfully hounded serious contenders for the position such as Mpombo and Magande. He was not sleeping at all before then. I bet he would happily host a grand banquet if Mr. Sata and other contenders for the republic president pulled out and allowed him the sole candidacy. The old man and the medal reloaded!
