Standard Bank Group has predicted victory for President Rupiah Banda in the September 20 general elections.

The research wing of Standard Bank says President Banda and the MMD will emerge winners of the 2011 elections, supported by the positive economic outlook.

The bank says the country’s per capita growth has been accelerating since President Rupiah Banda assumed office in 2008.

This is contained in the August 9, Standard Bank Group Africa Research report for Zambia.

The report however notes that the elections have put pressure on the kwacha which it anticipates to weaken as the political discourse gets heated up.

The bank expects the kwacha to move to K5,250 to one dollar.

Standard Bank Group becomes the third institution to tip President Banda as winner in the September 20 polls.

Early this month the Economic Intelligence Unit predicted for the fourth time running that President Banda will emerge winner in this year’s general elections.

Last week SYNOVATE, a leading research firm in the SADC region also predicted that President Banda will win the September polls with 42 percent.

  1. I’m not sure what a Bank has to do with the political polls.
However, after looking at article 4 of the PF constitution that clearly says Capitalism will be reversed in Zambia when the PF takes over government,i am not surprised that business leaders would take a pro MMD stand.
Who wants another repeat of the Mugabe scenario of Nationalisation?

  2. Its a known fact that RB and his National people’s ruling party MMD are triumphantly entering 2012 with a renewed people’s ruling manadate. he has won the hearts of every peace loving and hardworking loving Zambia. The man has connected with people at every level of Zambian.

  3. Its good that financial institutions are now getting involved in our national opinions.

Its normal they are stakeholders knowing that they offer financial services to the nation. I don’t expect to start arguing with this as Zambian because we are so good at this. These are just reflection of people in certain areas. Its only an encouragement to the opposition to work extremely hard and smarter as actual poll date nears.

  4. WE KNOW THAT PEOPLE LIKE SENIOR CITIZEN # 6,7 AND 9 ARE PAYED BY STATE HOUSE IN LUSAKA JUST TO BLOGG ON LT. AND LT FEEDS THESE CADRES WITH INFORMATION PRIOR TO AN ARTICLE BEING PUBLISHED SO THAT THEY COULD INFLUENCE THE BLOGGERSHIP BY SAYING NEGATIVE ABOUT THE OPPOSITION. WE NOW KNOW THE GIMMICK BEHIND THIS.

  6. Malabisi. Who are these guys representing? As Mahtan, you will stop commenting on the political sitiuation of this nation.

  7. I see that predictions and opinion polls are all pointing in the same direction. Mr HH still believes the MMD pays for these predictions. 20th Sept is around the corner when the truth shall come out.

  8. Standard Bank Group is a financial institution and has its own agenda, its not an NGO…its in the business of making money for its shareholders. This also looks like the Groups internal  brochure which is directed at potential  investors who are interested in reaping high profits with very minimum outlay at our expense due to the sleepy characters we have in power (like Buffoon RB) and his relaxed “laid back” tax laws.

  9. Yaba! being a pf supporter must be horrendous these days. What is there to argue about this prediction? Sata can not win this year. The maths dont add up, and the way pf is behaving shows that they realise that they will not win. What happened to the mass defections from MMD to pf? What has happened to the huge crowds in NW and S provinces? How come MMD is more visible in Lusaka this year? So far, pf’s campaigning has been haphazard and worst of all, their leaders are on record supporting panga wielding thugs – do you really think that such a party can win?

  10. This bank should just clear itself as it is at the cente of the UGP corruption issue. Next thing they will be telling us the weather. Stick to banking

  11.  #14 You mean the unproven allegations on UPG? If panga fanatics(pf) actually believe in the allegations that they are unable to corroborate, why did they send representatives to Durban to monitor the printing process? Why was the alleged corruption of UPG not brought into the open earlier given the fact that all parties were informed by the ECZ of their intention to use UPG, instead all we heard from pf were calls for the election date to be announced. Furthermore, if UPG is corrupt why has it been used by other countries in Africa including Zambia in the recent past and what is stopping pf from reporting the alleged corruption of UPG to the relevant authorities in SA? If pf have no confidence in UPG, why dont they do us all a favour and boycott the elections that they see as corrupt?

  12. This year, we do not want ECZ to start announcing elections from PF stronghood first and ending with the MMD stronghoods-this brings alot of unnecessary tension in the country and sends the shushus in wild panic to ring when their masters are trailaring. They have got the campacity to announce Shangombo results even before anouncing Kabwatas’ this time around. ECZ, Shushus, we are watching you, we won’t torelant any form suspicious undertaking this year, no man no law shall stop us from dealing with you firmly if you are found wanting!!!

  13. the bank is merely helping their business clients in making strategic decisions.you cannot captain a business flying blind.businesses need to have an idea of what future is going to hold through rational analysis. You bloggers keep your pants on the bank is are not trying to influence the outcome of the election ,which is beyond their power.

  14. BA RB you are just being deceived by these people.Come  20 sept,Imwe kuya bebele together with that same bank period!!!We shall see.

  15. I think those reporting the findings or conclusions of opinion polls do not understand the basic facts about inductive reasoning. We know that prediction is a probability because the conclusion is not certain. And since the conclusion is not certain, it is erroneous to use the modal “will”. The author of the polllster should have used words and phrases such as “it is likely that”, “might”, “it is possible that”, “there is a probability that”, etc.
Simple research tells us that polls are based on samples of populations-in this case voters. Since the entire population is not polled, polls are subject to sampling error which reflects the effects of chance and uncertainty in the sampling process. That is why we have a margin of error.

  16. This is the most bogus research I have ever heard, when did banks start to align themselves with political parties or candidates? For them to come publicly to support RB means that the money laundering accusations have some truth, so they are trying to protect their reputation by supporting MMD to make sure that their dirty dealings are not exposed.

  17. #15, can you name five countries which had peaceful elections in Africa recently? Don’t just support blindly even when you know that something wrong is going on, which can be catastrophic for the country.

  18. It will be a great disgress to see the corrupt RB, and his corrupt leadrs come back into power zambians will be shuttered to the cole, and govt willgo into slumber for the next five long years,, thieves will have a field day the poor will moarn and lament and no one will listen that is my pridiction

  19. Stanchart please keep away from politics. Ask mahtani of finsbury! If MMD loses, just know that you have a dislocation.

  20. Viva RB!! U hav done wonders but as usual even Jesus Christ was not appreaciated by everyone. Its the nature of humans.

  21. A customer becomes more motivated if s/he is paid out new bank money.. RB is too old to still be given support. Think about the youths who are jobless.. They need more help than the old who already have money and other means of survival.

  22. The massive campaign MMD has put up makes me think they are VERY worried about losing. With all the “good works” they have done I don’t see the logic of going overboard to prove the point, now it is nauseating. I have a feeling they will actually LOSE.

  23. The Bank is STANBIC and not STANCHART.
The banks opinion is based on what RB and his Party peceive to be factors which may help them score higher than their current unfavourable position.
In the hope that the charge can die a natural death, Standard Bank issued a ‘defence’ in favour of RB. IT DOES NOT MENTION SATA’S OBVIOUS STRONG POINTS AND WHY ON THE GROUND IS FAVOURITE TO WIN.
The banks can NEVER say that RB will be booted out in this Election for obvious reasons.
RB is still a seating duck. is Election for obvious reasons.
RB is still a seating duck.

  24. K5,250 to one dollar is this something we should be proud of…stupid. Obviously Standard bank has offered a lot of money to MMD.

  25. #3,5,9,14, I am a worried Zambian!, though I never followed Bagbo In Ivory Coast Last election predictions, this could have been the reasons why he refused to give up power basing on pre-election day opinion polls. He believed he had won well in advance and when the Independednt Election Commission in Ivory Coast counted all the ballots Ouatara was proucnced as winner. Bagbo rejected the results because of pre-election opinion polls I presume.

  26. imwe ma zambians,a bank is not just a “finance institute”its an economic institute.politics and economics coexist, the political future of the country explains the economic future of the country, thats why us economists working for banks research and predict the political future of the country which even includes results of elections.so dont under estimate this prediction

  27. Standard bank will stand to make a whole lot of money in 30 days, think of the potential exchange losses to be suffered by big business, i.e the mines etc!!??

  28. Thank you, I have just been looking for information approximately this subject for a while and yours is the greatest I have discovered so far. However, what in regards to the bottom line? Are you sure about the supply?|What i don’t understood is in truth how you’re no longer really a lot more smartly-preferred than you may be right now. You’re so intelligent.
