Be Careful Whom You Vote For

Share

By Gray Soko

Politicians come up with impressive election manifestos stating their strategic political, social and economic direction and sometimes outlines of prospective legislation ( e.g. a new constitution ) should they win and form government. Mostly these politicians are chosen for their “loyalty” and voters often vote for the party rather than the candidate on his or her own merits.

The election campaigns have mainly been negative, aiming to exploit people’s fears in order to manipulate and lower the voters’ perceptions of the caliber of the opponents. There has been no shortage of negative campaigning by proxy, i.e. organizations and institutions claiming to be non partisan but obviously by their deeds and words trying to trash the credibility of some candidates. There has also been appeals to emotion, such as pity, age, background, gratitude or simply wishful thinking.

Negative campaigning may have some effect on the less politically astute but may also do more damage to the candidate than the opponent. In the case of the incumbent, the voter typically holds the challenger and incumbent to different standards and expects the incumbent to be more positive than the challenger as the challenger is trying to show why he or she is more worthy. In our political parlance we have been treated to “politics of insults” rather than substance. Negative campaigning can also demoralize voters and lead to voter apathy in addition to causing unnecessary political radicalization and violence.

One gets the impression that some politicians think people owe them rather than the other way round. People are made to depend on the generosity, magnanimity or good nature of those in authority and not a well articulated and implementable programme for the country. Obviously some people have a vision to see Zambia progress to where it should have been after 47 years of independence, peace and stability and an abundance of natural resources but their vision is hardly communicated to the general public partly because the “public” media would not do so and partly because they are not aggressive enough or lack the resources to do so.

We really need a well informed general population if elections are to usher into public policy and decision making institutions men and women with a vision for a better Zambia. It is possible to have a better Zambia.

Audrey

  1. May the best candidate win! I crush and uproot any form of violence in the name of Jesus! i pray and hople that the losing candidates together with their cadres will accept defeat and move forward!

  2. We have enjoyed peace and tranquility for so long a time in Zambia.Let us not not take this for granted by condoning or anticipating violence after the outcome of 20th september.peace shall prevail.God bless Mother Zambia!

  3. God has already appointed the next president. what we are marely going to do tomorrow is to confirm God’s choice. so whoever is going to dispute the election results will do so on their own peril.they will be fighting God and not man. so whatsoever is bound on earth is also bound in heaven…and
whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. mathews 18:18

    • You guys that think God appoints leaders are somewhat confused, where have you ever seen the hand of God appoint a president? Did God appoint Idi Amin too? Dont you think if God appointed leaders then this world would have been peaceful? When a presidential candidate rigs an eletion you go on singing that he was appointed by God while he steals from you making you believe that he was Gods chosen king. Your vote is what ushers in a president and not God, Gods kingdom is in Heaven and not on earth so my dear make the decision of whom to vote for by yourself and remove God in politics. God stopped appointing Kings the days of the Kingdom of Judah, so revisit your biblical history.

  4. I’m now back into the country to vote…..
No more campaigns, no more doubts….Lets Vote out leaders who cheated Zambians by not giving them or enacting a new constitution-BILL OF RIGHTS. Vote out leaders who amended the Anti-Corruption ACT, esp clause 37 so that they can steal -Bloody thieves!! Isn’t it a shame, the same leaders who cheated Zambians are now begging for VOTES from the very people they cheated?? Shame!! VOTE OUT leaders who killed our people and our relatives in mongu and those who killed our people in mazabuka, Vote THEM OUT,!! LET’S VOTE THEM OUT, OUT!!

  5. # 2 JOJO: you have a serious problem, why not MMD after their extravagance on Campaign Materials forgetting the poor Zambians. What was the cost of the materials???

Let’s be serious, true leadership should think for its people. What I have seen in this election is silliness considering the challenges our people face in Zambia. I would not expect a responsible party to behave like MMD.

So corrupt to an extent of buying votes from people in exchange of vitenge and T-shirts.

They have been in power for 20 year, all they have done is bring down the integrity of Zambians. Both Sata and RB are old but we have no choice. We need a different Government other than MMD.

People VOTE for SATA. He will bring change.

    • Party funds and donations are not meant for government programs. Obama spent millions of dollars in campaigns even donated by the poor people in US. Remember 45 million Americans live in poverty (1 in 6)!

  6. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh’ Go Sata go, hard working man, the writings are clear on the walls, let the haters dance to the tune.:)>- pamaka.

  7. @7′ if you are a frustrated BEmba, that’s yr baby to nurse. Am Bemba too but voting RB, because I care for my country. ZAmbia is above tribal affiliations

Bises.

  8. @4 baby strawberry
Mama, leave God out of people’s choices. God doesn’t choose what you will eat or wear, you do. God ordains ‘the powers that be’ and that means he ordains the institution of leadership. You, the people decide whether you want a King Soul or a King David. You give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. God is against anarchy and failed states. The first century Christians were persecuted by Emeror Nero, but they did not call for his overthrow. God intends people to honour authority, even if you differ with them. Insulting and demeaning those in authority, whether RB or Sata is anti-Christ spirit.

  9. Vote Sata and PF tomorrow.
Voting is our part of the process that God has given us in appointing us a leader for the next five years, God willing.

Peace, justice, stability, development, love and unity in Zambia and among us.

  10. #7 SHEIKH – Either you are too young or you are applying selective memory. Sata is the very person who brought in the corruption together with his Chiluba that Levy Mwanawasa came to fight. Rupiah Banda didn’t introduce any corruption, he simply wants to change the way corruption is fought. Now, it is either you agree with his strategy or not, but disagreeing with his strategy does not necessarily make your views as the right way to fight corruption because your views are both not tested. However we know that Sata worked with chiluba to introduce unprecedented corruption and he worked with chiluba infact to try and force a third term for chiluba. And is that the same guy you want back in? Stupidity has never flourished so much in history like I have seen it in PF supporters this time!

    • You have hit the nail on the head my brother,Just wait for wednesday they will be crying as their grandi is sent in retirement for good.

  11. SATA should win these elections by any means. He has peoples votes, that we know!! The people you were seeing at MMD rallies were mobilized from various parts of the country. For example, the MMD rally in kitwe was attended by cadres from as far as Mwinulunga, solwezi, and all districts in CB.I spent my night in Chingola that day and all guest houses were fully booked with cadres from N/western P. The same happened every where RB went. WHY? MMD new they would rig, so they wanted to deceive people that they have a following. Sata knows all there tricks. VOTE THEM OUT PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA!! Ruling a country by crooked will not take us anywhere. Remove that failure!!

  12. We just to change the blue mood of MMD, lets try some green maybe Zambians can walker faster than the way they do now, dragging their feet.

    • that is the spirit. the world is going green. i think we should take care of our mother earth by going with the boat(water) green(vegetation),birds(animals) there is something unique about PF using GREEN.GOOOOOOOOO PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

  13. No. 10 you are a big fool. Look at the Tongas, they are firmly behind their Tonga brother HH. Look at the easterners, abandoning UNIP to stand firmly behind Banda, but look at you claiming to be a Bemba but firmly behind Banda, Shame on you. You are a disgrace to Bembaland. You are the reason, Luapula and Northern Provinces have been lagging behind. Viva Pabwatoooo. Ala ifwe niba Sata fye nangu mutwambe.

    • Bemba land vs the rest of the country we shall see when you will rule,After RB we go to Southern for HH and after HH we go to western for Milupi ,This country belongs to all of us .

  14. When will campaign ends in zambia>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  15. Only a dull and tribal person can vote for a grade 5 DROPOUT to be his/her president in a country of 13m pipo. Can someone here tell me which secondary school the so-called popular president went to. And may I know the fields in which he has the two Degrees. In all our hear of hearts, tribalism aside’ we know that the best candidate as at now is HH, closely followed by Milupi, Chipimo and Magande. Miyanda would have been the best of all only if he had an organised team around him. My vote is for 20HH.

    • Sorry to say your HH will not win-can never win. I am sorry sir. Really sorry!

Thought we discussed this on another article? But Shhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Jojo, you should be a troubled Bemba yourself. Why bring in tribal issues? Sheik did not say anything in relation to tribes. You want to vote for RB, vote for him that is your choice. Let Sheik also express his preferences. Try to be relevant when commenting on issues.

Bonne continuation a toi.

  17. Instead of analysing the article all you mugs above have gone to post R(u)B erm rubbish.

Got to say excellent article, too late though. But, if I had my way I would change about 90% of constitutions in Africa. Yes the Zambian constitution needs changing and quickly. Cut the powers of the president.

Because Africans have no shame, include in the constitution that no one is allowed to change parties. Harsh but hey what do you do with Africans? Oh dear! I said I was gone!! Shhhhhhhh!! You didn`t see this did you people?

  18. Vote HH, actually, Zambians have been praying that the serpent be crushed again and again for the fourth time. We are christains Christ is on the throne.

  19. Pepecho suffering and Airtime Sakala, you guys sound pretty wet behind the ears. How come you know so much about what’s going on in Zambia when you are in North America? You are not fooling anyone. There is another muppet who is clearly posting from the UK, but says he is back in Zambia to vote. Get real.

  20. # 17,you are an *****.You do not support some one on tribal lines you foolish fool.Am Bemba through and through but I do not support Sata.If at all stupid fools like you were to out-number the intelligent ones, this nation would be plunged into tribal wars.Am really puzzled for some one to be so shallow minded in this century, shame. Its *****s like you who are a disgrace not only to the Bemba, but to the nation. You should learn what to say before you open your mandible, swine.I really doubt your being a Bemba but am too sure about one thing, you are a BASTARD.

  21. I always knew that all this support for Sata was mere tribalism. Bembas cant tolerate not having one of their own in power. Now they want Sata to win by any means (see # 15). No amount of reasoning with them will change their minds and now they cant fake it any more. After trying to hoodwink the nation they have been told the real truth. All the points made to the effect that Sata is not what our country needs now or ever cannot beat their obsession with having a tribesman in office. Put the nation ahead not tribe

  22. Polling Booths Confiscated:

Concerned Lusaka residents have confiscated a set of polling booths discovered today under a tree in Long-acres area.

The respective polling booths were discovered in the afternoon along Los Angels Boulevard, just opposite the European Union offices.

After the discovery, one of the residents, John Banda informed Transparency International Zambia President Rueben Lifuka and then later informed the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

    At MuviTV

  23. I HAD THE CHANCE TO LISTEN TO SOME POLITICAL CANDIDATES FROM LOCAL GOVT TO PLOT 1. I COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT WAS COMING OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF THESE MEN AND WOMEN. MOST OF THEM WERE JUST DWELLING ON HISTORY BY CLAIMING I DID AND BROUGHT THIS AND THAT TO SUCH AND SUCH AREA OR SECTOR AS THOUGH THE FUNDING WAS FROM THEIR PRIVATE POCKETS. COME ON SERVING IN PUBLIC OFFICE DOES NOT ONE MONOPOLY OF WISDOM OR INTELLIGENCY.ITS A QUESTION OF TIMING. LOOKING AT A LIST OF MAJORITY OF THOSE RECONTESTING THEIR SEATS THEIR HANDS HAVE BLLOD ON THEM AND MANY SKELETONS IN THEIR CUPBOARDS. I WAS IMPRESSED BY THE CLASS OF CHARLES MILUPI, CHIPIMO JR, HH AND TO SOME EXTENT NAWAKWI AND MUHABI LUNGU. ONCE WE ARE DONE WITH THIS VOTING THERE IS NEED TO REBRAND ZAMBIAN POLITICS AND COME UP WITH THREE MAIN PARTIES. YES

  24. THIS IS WHAT POVERTY CAN DO TO A COUNTRY…INSTEAD OF MOVING THE COUNTRY FORWARD WE ARE BACKSLIDING!! RB/SATA ARE NOT THE ANSWER TO THE PROBLEMS FACED BY THIS COUNTRY.
ANYWAY LETS TRY AGAIN IN 2016!!! MAYBE BY THEN WE SHALL HAVE SANITY

  25. BWANA MKUBWA, YOURS IS THE MOST PROGRESSIVE THINKING I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS ON THIS BLOG..IF US ZAMBIANS COULD THINK LIKE THIS, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN MILLIONS OF KM AWAY.
BUT LOOK AT THE MAJORITY OF BLOGGERS ON THIS SITE. THEIR THINKING REFLECTS THE CADRE MENTALITY THAT HAS ENGULFED THIS COUNTRY.
INSTEAD OF STRENGTHENING SYSTEMS OF GOVERNMENT, WE ARE BUSY BOOT LICKING INDIVIDUALS IN THE NAME OF SATA/RB
PLEASE ZAMBIANS LETS CHANGE OUR THINKING STARTING WITH INTELLECTUALS SUCH AS THOSE ON THIS BLOG

  26. Nice article I hope the new administration will comprise of patriots with a selfless development agenda that will enhance enlightenment and rid Zambia of poverty, preventable diseases and hunger. Now that the buzz created by campaigns will be no more after Tuesday’s polls I sure will miss blogger’s contributions among which were mature, analytical, educative, well thought out and some which were completely outrageous in content and substance, I wish you all well and urge you to hope for the best for Mother Zambia!

  27. The head line to me says DONCHI KUBEBA……Vote wisely tomorrow…. Put an end to the Big headed Banda. aka SHREK….

    • Mmmm … Bon courage,Eva

  28. There is obviously need to sanitize the way campaigns are conducted by politicians, besides massive voter education and access to information. The most vulnerable to manipulation and exploitation are those particularly in rural and peri-urban Zambia.
More often than not those in the hunt for re-election act and conduct their campaigns like they are in opposition. They mimic the opposition approach to advance their case

  29. The indictment and measure of inadequacy is on the incumbent seeking re-election and they must tell the electorate what they have done for them and why in their opinion deserve to be re-elected.
Sadly they don’t and their message is all about fear mongering and demonizing their challengers without any clearly defined program for the nation especially in this election

  30. # 34, 35 & 36, you are a breath of fresh air on this blog. People have actually been divergent in views but mostly obnoxious in trying to drive their own agenda and views to the ignoring of all during this campaign period. It is imperative for Zambians to demand for strengthening of governance systems to allow sanity. We need to have majority winner (i.e. 50% + 1 ), we need presidential powers reduced, we need a vice president who is a running mate of the president, we need a bill of rights and more all to be enshrined in the constitution. If we have a powerful constitution, we will be ruled fairly, the president will avoid to abuse his/her power to enrich himself/herself and his/her kin and kith. Zambia, please vote for a new constitution!

  31. GO AND VOTE WISELY THOSE WHO ICITING VIOLENCE ARE POWER HUNGRY LEADERS WHO HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER OTHER THAN TO SACRIFICE YOUR LIVES. IS IT WORTH IT? FOR ZAMBIA TO PROVIDE JOBS AS BEING PROMISED LIKE HEAVENS WE NEED A FAST GROWING ECONOMY AND CURRENTLY ITS FOREIGN CONTROLLED. INVESTORS DONT LIKE TO INVEST WHERE THERE IS POLITICAL INSTABILITY. LETS GUARD WHAT WE HAVE GAINED ECONOMICALLY. SHOULD WE MISBEHAVE AFTER 20/09/11 RESULTS THEN WE SHALL LOSE EVEN THE LITTLE ECONOMIC GAINS WE HAVE RECORED. WHEN AN ECONOMY GOES DOWN IT DOES NOT SPARE A SOLDIER, POLICE, ZNS,OP AND THE COMMON MAN ON THE STREET. LETS SAY NO TO POLITICAL MANIPULATIONS FROM ALL QUARTERS.

  32. How many times will miyanda loose this time around?ba kunta kinte you seem to be so critical of issues please do stand in 2016 or you are already a beneficiary of mmd?good luck to your party.

  33. @36 bwana mkubwa &@38 shytex you guys are amazing please teach dull cadres to understand issues the way you do.a sound and good constitution is what will get this country forward, not rb or sata as long as it can be changed to suit individuals.politics should be reorganised in this country.

  34. Ba ECZ twapapata twafeniko insele shachilamo. Ifwe twafuma mu PF lelo no ku voter tukavota Ba RB kuno kuluwingu mwaumfwa mukwai?

  35. Jeremiah 23:1-4 ESV / 23 helpful votes
“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord. Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the Lord.
    Goodbye MMD!

  36. 1 Timothy 3:1-5 ESV
The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? Is a pedophile the kind of leader we deserve?

  37. Proverbs 16:18 ESV
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. It is pride that is pushing MMD to be planning to hold inaugural ceremony on Friday, be careful of you evil plans because the Good Lord has his own plan for Zambia.

  38. Psalm 101:5 ESV
Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I will destroy. Whoever has a haughty look and an arrogant heart I will not endure.

Does this sound like anyone we know….? the Lord is speaking to all Zambian to do the right thing vote SMART!

  39. Mark 10:42-45 ESV
And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
People if the leader you plan to vote for does not give himself as a servant to the people, DO NOT VOTE FOR HIM/HER because you would be going against the lords wishes… and if you do the wrath of GOD will fall on Zambia for the next 5 years….

  40. Tomorrow i will vote for RB to protect the elections for 2016,We need a breath of fresh air in 2016.If sata wins expect the same kind of stupid politics in 2016.Rb is the last of these old tired politicians.UPND protect HHs political career by voting for RB that is the truth if Sata wins its fair well to HH,the choice is yours.

  41. Rb is selling Zambia to the Chinese!!!! I know a man who can put an end to this but DONCHI KUBEBA… The Chinese also bankrolled MMD campaign. They know if PF come into power there game will be stalled. Vote RBISH out tomorrow…..

  42. Today you vote, think critically about your decisions. Please be level headed and consider who and why you will be voting for.

For those of you in the PF, ask yourselves what Sata will do that he didn’t do with Chiluba. Consider his communist constituition and desire for one party statehood. Go to the PF website the constitution is there for you to read.

For those of you considering RB consider his lax approach to fighting corruption. However consider the unprecedented economic growth Zambia has achieved the the 3 years he has ruled Zambia.

Whatever your decisions are weigh them using facts, not party loyalty or emotion. Consider how your vote will affect 13 million others for the next 5 years and how it may affect generations to come.

  43. Thought kwena ulicipoolbar. Why do you think Africa is where it is today? Ni corruption we mpumbu we. LPM tried to sort it out, awe shuwa we`ve gone back to UNIP days where even registering your child for grade one you either had to know the Headmaster or gave him something.

    Foko!

  44. Tomorrows headline “Zambians elect another/same old president” Please we are tired of KKs era politicians. Let Sata and RB go and rest at their farms. So we can develop our country with new blood.

  45. Thank God Sata has not faked death to gain an opportunity for postponing the elections, We ask God to maintain Sata’s heart to function normally so that he gets the message of final downfall live, so that the will of the people to go about their lives without being harrassed by pang-threats is sustained. Sata demonstrated the worst human cruelty to his best friend and ally Chiluba. It had to take RB who was imprisoned by the Chiluba-Sata regime to restore integrity to Chiluba and allow him to die a FREEMAN. HH is a far much better human being than Zondwa Sata. Let the ballot box cast-away the evil Sata and instil the injection of clean politics in Zambia. As for Mmembe, this week will end his distortion of journalism in this part of Africa. To HELL with The POST.

  46. The Project of “DON’T KUBEBA” (i.e. maximum deception) has run out of ideas to disrrupt the Elections. Kabimba, Lubinda, Mmembe must be leaking their wounds as their Sata awaits the impending loss on his 4th attempt to deceive the people of Zambia. The worst bereavement will be staged in the homes of Chabwera, Chitala, Kaweche & Panji Kaunda, Lubinda, Mangani, Masebo, Mmembe, Mpombo, Mulongoti, Musa Mwenye, Lucas Phiri, Milton Phiri, Sebastian Zulu etc., who backed an evil horse by jumping from the frying pans to the blazing fires. God bless Zambia.

  47. Change is already taking place. But it is eerie. Elvis Nkandu, the Chairperson of Zanama (a marketeers’ association), a notable supporter of the outgoing regime is in police custody. His offices have been taken over by a rival Zatma sympathethic to the PF. Authorities have picked Nkandu in connection with the K2 Billion loan his organisation got for members from CEEC. The whole things smarks of political scores being settled…One wonders; so early days…

  48. JOJO,MWAMBA ,DS MALAMA AND OTHERS u must be manguams , open your eyes and see no more MMD HIJACKERS ( mwetundila go and comfort your loosing president or else balaya mu depression)
Iam sure you have seen how the people of Zambia are celebrating…ask yourselves how many of you tundilas are??
