William Banda has challenged President Michael Sata and PF to ensure that all Zambians get K2 million on Thursday, the day that marks the ruling party’s 90 days in power.
In an interview with LusakaTimes on Saturday evening, Banda said it will not be acceptable for the PF to fail to fulfill the “more money in your pockets in 90 days” promise.
“We don’t want the PF to start saying they want more time. In exactly 90 days (Thursday) we want everyone to have K2 million that they promised,” he said.
William Banda also castigated President Michael Sata for giving street vendors a go ahead to trade in the streets.
“When we were in power, he (Sata) used to condemn us for those trading in the streets,” Banda said. “He used to say, we failed to control people on the streets, in the bus stops and at markets. But why has he changed now?”
Two days ago, President Sata directed local authorities to leave street vendors alone adding that the ruling party would lose popularity if the traders were asked to leave the streets.

The problem with us Zambians is that we are all too political and very few actually do or want to do actual work that will make us progress. The government will not do it. We need to stop looking at them all the time. All we need from the government is to create and enforce laws that create a good business environment.

Bane we have ouselves to blame. Why and how, honestly, did we believe that PF could manufacture extra money to be able to put into our pockets within 90 days of being in power? It doesn’t take an economist or rocket science to discern that the whole was an illusion, and even a fallacy. Are we a dull nation? I dont think so, but if not then what?
I am sure the majority of Zambians don’t want to see street vendors all over. On the other hand street vendors have to survive like everyone else by selling whatever is in demand by the public. Certainly just saying move out is not good enough. What neeeds to be done is for the Local Authority to come up with legislation that will deter street vendors from operating on the streets. My suggestion is that street vendors be charged a daily operating fee that is double the amount they would pay operating from designated market stalls. Failing to comply should render conviction to serve a one month term in prison sweeping streets, Parking Lots, Ministry Grounds, Hospital Grounds, etc. It is a win win situation for both the government and the street vendor.

As for the consumers, they must try by all means not to buy from street vendors. In the event that a consumer procures undesired merchandize from a street vendor and sues the street vendor, the consumer must equally be sentenced to serve time as that accorded to the street vendor for violating the policy. This I believe will help reduce street vending if not remove it completely.

You people,street vending is not a bad thing if handled properly,even big states like New York have street vendors,there has to be a a balance of benefit though,councils should benefit from it, as well as the vendors.Its been happening for a while,but the money taxed from the vendors ends up in some ka party cadre’s pockets in the name of CHAIRMAN.So,if the money realized from these vendors is used appropriately,i see no problem with street vendors,moreover,most of them are PF.

Hog wash!! I don’t think MCS stated this. The street vendors issue was created by MMD when they came into power. MCS tried to clean it up when he was Minister of Local Government but FTJ stopped him. It is a very big problem and needs to be handled with caution. As much as they are a nuisance at times ( street vendors) there must be a way they can be encouraged to get off the streets. For example lower the rentals at the so called modern markets, encourage the customers to buy from markets and not the streets.
