Chris Katongo said he never doubted Zambia would overcome Ghana to reach the 2012 Africa Cup final.

Zambia shocked Ghana 1-0 with a 78th minute goal scored by striker Emmaunel Mayuka who came on as substitute in the 46th minute for striker James Chamanga.

The 2012 finalists were outplayed by Ghana and had Kennedy Mweene to thank for saving a 6th minute penalty from Asamoah Gyan.

“We don’t doubt ourselves,” Katongo said at the post-match briefing.

“Every time we go on the pitch we know what our target is. At the end of the day we got the goal and we are the winners and we are in the finals.”

Meanwhile, Zambia leave for Gabon on Thursday morning ahead of Sundays final in Libreville.

  1. Well done boys. We are proud of our copper bullets. Let’s go to libreville and finish off the dream of our fallen heroes of 1993 team! We can do it, yes we can and will do it! Go Chipolopolo!!!

  2. Katongo, please go to Libreville with confidence, don’t settle for second place. Gabon was a source of great pain for Zambia. We need this victory and you guys can do it. Remember David and Goliath. You only have one shot and you have to aim carefully and with confidence.

    God Bless.

  3. We can do it again for sure. This is our year I hope the referee is fair not like this one we had today. That in the 6th minute was not a penalty.

  4. Gabon DONT KILL US TWICE.

THE SOULS OF THE ZAMBIAN PLAYERS WHO DIED THERE WILL HELP THE TEAM. IVORY COAST WILL NOT SEE THE GOAL POSTS!!!!

  5. My fellow country men and women, atleast we have humbled and eliminated two west African Goliaths. We knw that Ivory Coast are the favourite on paper, but we are going as we are with confidence, the football of names is by gone. Atleast our boys have put a smile on our faces. We shall humble them on Sunday, wheather we loose or win the results on Sunday won’t change my mood, its not easy to reach finals. Lates pray for our boys, the cup is coming to Nothern Rhodesia this time.

  6. Congratulations boys and whatever happens in the final you have done us proud. I put a bet on Ghana to win about 1.5 million Kwacha. I am a loser! Yes.

  7. Ghana is cold like amenshi ya muchishima. Early this morning they said they will baptise Zambia by 3 nil, now all the Radio and TV station are saying Mayuka 1 Ghana 0. they have not accepted the defeat. we thank the guys they made us proud. Ba chabala was helping Mweene to save the ball.

  8. We beat Ivory Coast 1-0 in the group stages of the 1994 Afcon finals, during which they were the cup holders (Champions). Kenneth Maritoli scored the only goal of the match. They were by a far a better and exciting team to watch at that time than this group of so called European stars they have now.  We can still do it boys, just for once, please! Watched the match alone here in Germany, but my neighbors heard me shout after the final whistle went. BIG UP BOYS. PROUD OF YOUR SUCCESS THIS FAR. Remember, you can achieve more!!!

  9. I wouldn’t set my hopes that high though its good to be optimistic..i would only wish my team (zambia) well and use the ghana win as a boosting factor. Good luck zambia and may the best team win

  10. I think that referee was bought. He had bad intentions against us at the beginning. That penalty he awarded was ridiculous. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I think as the game went on, he realized that the whole world was watching and he became a bit fair.
Coming to the game, I think we were lucky. We were not the better of the two teams today. We know how to score when we get a chance, but we need help on how to create chances for ourselves. I think the strategy of bringing in Mayuka in the second half was brilliant coaching by Renard. Mayuka does not usually play 90 minutes and the coach would rather use him late than early. That way, if we went into a penalty shootout, Mayuka would have been available. Brilliant coaching!!! Sunzu and HH in the back are great players. Go Zambia!!!!

  11. Pr 8:13  The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.
Pr 11:2  When pride comes, then comes disgrace; but wisdom is with the humble.
Pr 16:18  Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Pr 21:24  The proud, haughty person, named “Scoffer,” acts with arrogant pride.
Pr 29:23  A person’s pride will bring humiliation, but one who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.

  12. Ghana is a stronger team than Ivory Coast. The boys just need to be confident and play according to the coach’s plan and we can defeat them. They have also suffered a lot with injuries and yellow cards and so they are a depleted team. HH and Sunzu should just watch Drogba!

  13. I have been in NZ for 7 years and I see Haka performed almost everyday but the one that Zambia did after the much is the most sensational of all. Victory in the final is certain. Happy Chappy.

    • Hey mate, where can we find the clip of the postmatch celebration???? Lets get them to do it again after the final!!!!

  14. Boys you have made us proud as Zambians. You deserve to be in the final. What upsets me most are these so called foreign soccer analysts who keep on referring to us underdogs and Ivory Coast the favourites. Can’t it get into their heads that we are in the final, and not by chance, but after beating their “favourites” Senegal and Ghana. To my lovely Chipolopolo Boys keep the faith. Best wishes, will be watching you on sunday, From Scotland.

  15. Zambia can beat any team in the world. Coach tell the boys to play their game. Analysts on itv 4 here in UK have said Chipolopolo is the only team that plays with flair and its a joy to watch, but they went further to point out that semi final against Ghana is the only game that Chipolopolo played below par ever since the tournament began. My appeal to the boys is that they should up the game in the final and take elephants head on.

This africa cup of nationals is ours…. chipolopolo iyeeeeeeeeeeeee….

  16. I want to make an appeal to CAF to select a good referee to officiate the final not the refereeing of an Algerian man who seemed to be siding Ghana. One he warded a dubious penalty & thank God he missed it. Kalu please tell CAF to select the best referee to officiate, if any thing they CAF should be bringing referees from Europe, Asia and America for the tournament, i have said this because many are the times that referees have failed us. Please note this. West Africa and North Africa countries have been seen dominating in Africa because of bias officiating …. Its our year Chipolopolo….

  17. yeah boys yeah boys…………kukosa mu final because that Ivory Coast team…mmmmmm. If we play the same way against them we might end up losing by a big margin coz they attack more than ghana….but otherwise nachilila na pa Havana…muli iwe!!!

  18. I watched the game alone but my shouting after Mayuka goal prompted my neighbors to call 911. George Mubanga (California -USA). Uno mwaka wesu…dont kubeba…Go go boys

  19. A small observation ..all zambian players are predominantly right footed. No natural left footers (maybe Mbesuma?) and is why our attacking play lacks that bit of variety. Notice how lefty’s easily dribble past players. However, we have a potent attack force — go Zambia go

  20. Zambian businessmen, this is now the time to offer some pledges to the boys. Mwakwata indalama shamuti? Businessmen in other countries help their sportsmen through monetary donations but you people in Zed what is wrong kanshi? Nimpiya shamuti waku Dubai.

  21. God almighty will fight the battle for us in the finals like He did for Israel in the Bible many times. We are not spiritists like others who are saying the souls of the dead will help us on Sunday. Our hope is in the true and living God the father of Jesus Christ. His Favour will guide us in the finals. While Ivory coast would come against us with skill and fame, We shall come against them in the name of the Lord, JESUS CHRIS. FAVOUR is on our side.

  22. Drogba’s really showing his age when running. Heavy and wobbly. These are the things we have to study b 4 we play IC. They’ve had an easy ride so far. We have the potential to expose their frailties. Keep possession and stop making basic errors. Giving the ball away, trying to be slick in our own box. We can play the ball but we have to stop giving the ball away cheaply. We need to crush IC in style by playing our own game. They might have supersters but we all breathe the same oxygen.

Chipolopolo – Now is the Time

  23. ba chimbwi muletasha, mwa copmlaina lintu kalu a tamfishe boneti. lelo mulelumba fye. mwa fwaya kalu afumepa pa bu Faz president. makandi yenu

  24. Go boys….two (Senegal and Ghana) down one to go…..shoot the elephant in the head……by scoring early and remain tight at the back. Give KALABA freedom to roam around. This is the biggest and most exciting AFCON ever because they (CAF) and their buddies never saw it coming. Go chipolopolo iyeeeee……ala bane namumfwisha abantu insoni.

  25. Ala kalebalika bane, you have truly done a good job. I am praying for you guys, the cup is coming to zambia. How much is involved to win the AFCON?

  26. TO BE HONEST, IT IS BY GOD’S GRACE THAT WE WON THE MATCH. GHANA DOMINATED THE GAME AND HAD A LOT OF CHANCES. THANKS TO OUR ANGEL MWEENE! WITHOUT HIM, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN DOOMED! BUT ALL THE SAME CONGRATS!

  27. What was Lungu doing messing around with the ball in the 18 yard box? Drogba could take advantage of such a lax attitude in the danger area. Well done boys though.

  28. ZAMBIA,ZAMBIA,ZAMBIA ! They called us underdogs ha.we have harmed the big dogs kikikikikikikikikikiki. yaba.Ghana what ghan.Chipolopolo boys one more task beat the elephants we are proud of you boys.bring the cup were it belongs.our time to cerebrate.

  29. In the mean time prostitutes in Kabwata and Chilenje must give for free or at least pa half price so that ichalo chisansamuke bane.

  30. Ghana by their own admission were lucky to be in the last 4. As for us we took one of our few opportunities and scored so for me theres no such thing as luck. Ghana didnt take her chances we took ours clinically and we are in the FINALS!

  31. CAF strategically chose HOWARD WEBB to officiate zambia/ghana match so that ghana goes through. From newpaper analysis, commetators etc show how this world has become so poluted with english football. Ivory coast regarded as favourites simply because it has a lot of players in the epl, that league for fluffers, takatakas no skill cant trap and control a ball. Zambia ll win! any team full of epl players cant beat zambia we very skillful.

  32. Well done my young bullets. Go for the largest animal now and bring the curcus to Zambia for everyone to share. We are proud of you boys and we know you can do it. Mayuka you are now the Main man here in Switzerland and Mweene we say Bravo, keep it up boys we need more than just one bullet on target come Sunday. After whole your target (elephant) will be wide and clear for you to sloughter it nice and proper. Go Zambia Go. its our time to show the world the power of togetherness (synergy) in football not just individual names.

  33. its a good win, when gyan missed i knw it was ours there was no turning back there. But please coach as we play the final ask the boys not to do alot of ball watching as this might harm us so badly. We are going to play a much stronger opponent than ghana so we must up our game. All the best as we play the final.

  34. Where is JUZZ on the comments today? Maybe KPX can make a meal of him after this win. Congrats boys! Go Zambia go………………….

  35. proud of being a Zambian.Viva chipolopolo. We were diving in the pool yesterday coz of joy.
    ha ha ha ha ishiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  38. What a goal and what a save. We are proud of you guys.I have no doubt that Ivory coast will loose by 2-1 so that they can be humbled. Zambia will show them what they have done to so many proud teams. Ask South Africa, Senegal, and Ghana

  39. 2012 CAF rankings Zambia no 1,Ivory Coast no 2, Ghana no 3 and Mali no 4.I know the poacher with the copper Bullet have killed the Elephant.

  40. Might God, 2day we r playin Ghana n u knw,

  41. #29 Don’t behave like like thoze who see tribe in whatever a Bemba doez, leave Simataa and Kamanga out of this.

  42. WHERE ON EARTH HAVE YOU SEEN BLACK STARS SHINE? Takwaba! CHIPOLOPOLO has obliterated the black stars with one snipper BULLET.
Now it is time to poach…LET THE BULLET STRIKE THE ELEPHANT DEAD! Chipolopolo we love you!

  43. Zambia did the southern african region proud. we here in zim are all benhind chipolopolo.it a a loud shout when mayuka scored and when the biased referee blew the final whistle. Go Zambia go

  44. Great stuff, looking forward to Sunday….when your name has already been written on the trophy, its extremely hard to remove it. The trophy has our name…..lets get it boys!!!

  45. Nabwela bane after absence ya chibanda. Nomba ine ninsakamana. Bushe Sunzu takasundilefye muli kaputula nga amona itanta lya kwa Drogba lile isa??

  46. iyeee.. thank you boys, the task was huge, but we thank Got we were favoured and won, great moment 29 and 74 please leave tribal nonsence out of our victory.74 avoid such strong tribal isolation its a big issue that needs effort directed at addresg it not aggrevating.Eyes on the ball..

  47. WHEN WE MEET THE ELEPHANT THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO AVOID CORNERS AND FREE KICKS NEAR THE GOAL.  THE SKY IS THE LIMIT FOR THE BULLETS.  THEY ELEPHANTS SEEM TO HAVE AGEING PLAYERS WHILE ZAMBIA HAS A YOUTHFUL SIDE WHICH COULD BE ADVANTAGE TO US.

  48. Viva Zambia viva chipolopolo viva ma-Ucar.Now bring the cup home and we will always remember you.We shall give you money, daughters, houses, cars and name streets and buildings after you.If you lose then we will not remember you much.Complete the job especially that it is in Gabon.Good luck boys.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

  49. Its about time! Congrats to the boys and the technical banch and FAZ and the people of Zambia and their Government. its been purely Team Work!

  50. #49 NACHULA: Remember the quarter final match between Zambia and Nigeria in Angola in 2010? Zambia dominated and outplayed the super eagles from first to last whistle, but we ended up as losers (on post match penalties). Now that is the game of football. It is about strategies to get the desired result and not to dominate the play but end up as losers. Arsene Wenger (The Arsenal Manager) described Zambia on Euro sport 2 days before the match that “they are very disciplined tactically and have 3 front players who are very quick, dangerous and intelligent”. He particularly mentioned Katongo, Kalaba and Mayuka as very dangerous players that Ghana should watch out for. Rafa Benitez (former Liverpool Manager) also said the same a day later in a separate interview

  51. BRAVO BOYS,BROVO ZAMBIA,THIS ONE IS OURS,IT IS MEANT FOR ZAMBIA!WE ARE ALL PROUD OF YOU BOYS! NOTHING CAN SURVIVE THE COPPER BULLET DESPITE ITS MINUTE SIZE, IT BRINGS GIANTS DOWN WITH MIGHT THUNDER!

  52. Well done boys, remember the ball is round and you have come a long way, you have all the blessings from me and all Zambians. We hope for the best with Ivory coast but if that does not go to our side you still have put our country on the International map. Thank you Mr. Lernard the Manager for the job well done. Ba Katongo (Captain) namubomba mukwai.

  53. @No73 (Truth Pains) those are some wise words out of all this blog, My only worry is Chisamaba Lungu, very skillful player but immature and naive, He was at fault for the goals conceded in the first two games when he played at right back and yesterday messed up and it could have been costly, trying to dribblle in his 18 yard box, well actually going back when he should have cleared the ball. Showboating aswell, We need discipline, I know He’s a young lad but the older players and manager need to have a serious word with him, otherwiswe he may end up the villain in the final.

  54. Chisamba almost cost us the last game. He is a brilliant midfielder but his defensive skills have cost Zambia almost all the goals we allowed in this tournament. I wish him the best and I can see he will be a great footballer one day. But this time we want that cup in Lusaka and he must put his act together.

  55. Chisamba is the future star. Only thing lacking in his game is a little decision making: When and where to dribble. He almost broke our hearts last night. That said, he is destined for greatness.

  56. I have been always a proud Zambian, because we are unick…………..God has just shown the world what He is capable of to His children. Let them underdog us but the almight is with us. Who can say No to what God has said Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. This reminds me the David-Goliath battle. The so-called under-dogs have bitten the upper-dogs. It is wonderful. I am liking it. Go boys Go!

  58. MAY THE BLOOD OF JESUS TOTALLY PROTECT THE CHIPOLOPOLO BOYS AND ALL THE CREW. HOLY SPIRIT BE WITH THE BOYS ON SUNDAY FOR THE FINALS. BLESS THEM ALL THE WAY. I TRUST AND BELIEVE IN YOU LORD, AMEN. GOD BLESS RENARD COMPLETELEY, AMEN

  59. I had earlier mentioned that Zamba had fewer chances of going through to the final and I was very right. Zambia only had 6 shots on the goal while Ghana had 13 shots. But the difference is Zambia utilised most of the fewer chances and managed to score one. Ghana was a better side but wasted their chances so they lost. Coming to the Ivory coast mali game Ivory Coast were favourites and they toook the day. For the cup final on Sunday Ivory coast are favourites and they have more chances of winning than Zambia. Its up to Zambia to maximise their fewer chances like they did with Ghana. Best wishes to Zambia. This is an indepenednt and unbiased anaylysis. Any sensible person will agree with me.

  60. for me the mweene saved the day and mayuka rewarded his efforts, well done guys as the couch says, the entire team is the star!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  61. Congrats boyz but show more confidence next game. While kuwina is the ultimate, kawinidwe is also important, so that the win is not attributed to anything, like luck, dead players spirits, tec. Mwaamvwa makani?

  62. The day the routers died ?C who put the 4 inch nail in the circuit breaker and poured coffee over the servers? A. The Bastard Operator from Hell
