President Michael Sata has said that he is deeply saddened over the death of Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ) president Oswell Munyenyembe. Mr. Munyenyembe, 59, died in a car crash on the Kitwe-Ndola dual carriageway on Tuesday afternoon.

President Sata described the late Munyenyembe as a rare breed and highly valuable and respectable trade unionist.

“Oswell was someone with exemplary trade union skills and it was always a joy to see him doing what he knew best – presiding over negotiations and always accomplishing what his members expected of him,” President Sata said.

“Therefore, I have no doubt in my mind that the effect of this sudden loss is already being felt by both the employees and the management in our robust mining sector. His bravely, courage and maturity even on crucial moments is simply peerless or first-class.”

The President said Munyenyembe has been a beckon of hope, courage and bravery for the labour movement since the commencement of his trade union career in 1983.

“During his many years in the trade union movement, his dedication and selfless nature was always something that many passionately admired and esteemed. Even outside his work, Oswell carried himself as a kind, honest and a man of great honor and strength,” the Head of State said.

President Sata said genuine patriots of mother Zambia will never forget Munyenyembe’s great strides, efforts and contributions to the labour movement.

“Indeed, he will be greatly missed and we are all saddened by his passing and our thoughts and prayers are with the Munyenyembe family,” the President said.

“We pray that the Almighty God gives them comfort and fortitude as they face these immense difficulties.”

  1. I only wish these presidential statements could be written with a bit more flair. Fine English is not our first language but at this level, speech and statement writers should have a good command of it…..

  2. Sad news. Condolences to his family. Many deaths in Zambia are due to over speeding on poor state of roads with no speed limits. Ndola-Kitwe highway is normally good. 100KMH should be on this road with 80 & 90 KMH on most sections. With these accidents, Africa will not develop

  3. Indeed we have lost a great trade unionist in Mr Munyenyembe, he has left us at a very difficult moment.am sure most of my fellow miners will understand this,my heartfelt sympathy to the munyenyembe family, MHSRIEP.

  4. #5 Chappa has a message that needs attention, he posts the same message about the misdeeds of former ambassador to Canada, Nevers Mumba. Can someone help?

  5. Can somebody explain how the accident happened? Surely that is a dual carriage way, we dont expect head-on collisions.. MHSRP

  6. May the God Lord welcome him into his heavenly home and give strength to these he has left behind,, MHSRIP and condolences to his family

  7. @12 mwine mushi, headon collision on a dual carriage? are you serious? just wish that the soul of the departed rest in peace just like the rest of us are doing. munyenyembe, you have run your race, keep the fire burning till we meet on the otherside.

  8. #1 Peter Cool, I agree with your observation completely! The statements coming out of State House are so poorly written and the English so atrociously it is unbelievable no one in State House has noticed! My eighth grade child can do a much better job of writing statements for the President!! The English is so bad! Don’t they have anybody check what George Chellah writes for the President?

  9. When one dates Oswald Munyenyembe’s union activities to the likes of Timothy Walamba and John Sichone as MUZ President and General Secretary respectively, you appreciate the immensity of his (Oswald’s) experience which President Sata is talking about.

    MHSRIP.

  10. ‘His bravely, courage and maturity even on crucial moments is simply peerless or first-class’

The sentence above should have just been writen in bemba, its embarrasing that it passed through state house public relations as they call it without being checked. Why cant state house use simple MICROSOFT WORD to check their grammar?

I am so sure if you put that sentence into any word processor you will be advised to revise it.

  11. 2Ki 8:12  Hazael asked, “Why does my lord weep?” He answered, “Because I know the evil that you will do to the people of Israel; you will set their fortresses on fire, you will kill their young men with the sword, dash in pieces their little ones, and rip up their pregnant women.”
