President Michael Sata said that he does not agree with people calling for a legal provision that will pave way for quota system in the new constitution that will allocate a specific number of seats for women in parliament.

President Sata said that he believes that women should compete with the men as he believes that women also have the potential to successfully defeat men. The head of state said that he will not encourage a system that give the women positions on a silver platter but women need also to work hard.

President Sata said that women should emulate the current female parliamentarians who successfully defeated the male candidates in the previous elections adding that the key to winning seats in parliament is to have the right message as a candidate.

The President was speaking during the international women’s day celebrations at Lusaka show grounds.

And President Sata has also observed that lack productivity among the men and youth in particular has contributed to negative vices such as the defilement Rape and other forms of violence in the country.

He added that it is for this reason that the PF governments is committed to job creation as well as promote incentives that will promote citizen’s empowerment.

President Sata has also directed the ministries of justice and Gender and child Development to ensure that laws that border on the children’s rights and those that aim at eliminating discrimination against women are implemented.

  1. Thats my president!! And My Name is MMD Chief Bootlicker, am Zambian and I fully support my president 110% on this one.

The culture of entitlement so cancerous in countries like South Africa and the others should not be encouraged or even legislated. It breeds laziness, corruption, kills competition and is retrogressive to the economy.

Every Zambian whether male or female MUST be given equal resources to help them succeeded in life. Putting in legislation to favour a certain group perceived to be disadvantaged just makes that group grow even more lazy and corrupt.

Ask those that live in South African and they will tell you what BEE has done to people here and the economy.

Mr Sata has my full support on this one.

  2. Thats the way it should be equal rights between men and women. Women should learn to compete in zambia and leadership positions needs competent people for country to develop fast.Thumbs up Mr president on this one.

  3. Well put. Pipo shoud not get stuff on slver plates otherwise we ll end up with liabilities who cant even articulate things properly – all in the name of equal representation

  4. Its a good idea, it would have promoted gender equality and national development. Women should condemn this selfish move from a man who has no regard for women……

Does the *****t know why they are doing affirmative action in South Africa and in the US?

  5. Then why have you created a Ministry of Gender, that specifically looks at the plight of women? Its no secret that women have been discriminated against in areas of decision making. A quota system will encourage more  women to participate more in politics, Maybe they might even do better than the men who have surely failed the country.
Afirmative action was also used in other countries on the same principal

OOOh also cut-off points in schools for girls, and it did not promote laziness among the girls as some of you are suggesting.

    • I am a man, this I tell you, the gender ministry is good for women love to talk and air things out. This way they have a conduit to lay their propositions on the table. The other Key to development is an empowered women force. In America women make up 90% of the consumer market. So give women resources and they drive your economy. Plus this way with a female IG of police they can have a champion in chasing down defilers and pedophiles and castrating them.

    • Gender doesn’t mean women…. In all fairness making the Gender ministry is the most the president can do to favor women, though the ministry’s mandate boarder on gender issues both for men and women.

  6. I TOTALLY SUPPORT MR.PRESIDENT ON THIS ONE.WHO DID DISCRIMINATION AGAINST WOMEN IS IT NOT THE WOMEN THEMSELVES? COS IF WE HAVE ELECTIONS AND U FIND WOMEN VOTING FOR MEN INSTEAD OF FELLOW WOMEN THEN WHO IS TO BLAME? GENTLE MEN IF WE FOLLOW PROPERLY THE ISSUE OF GENDER EQUALITY THERES NO NEED OF EVEN REDUCING CUT OFF POINTS IN SCHOOLS OR EVEN MAKING A MINISTRY JUST FOR WOMEN COS THE TEACHING BEHIND GENDER EQUALITY IS THT WHATEVER A MAN CAN DO EVEN A WOMAN CAN BUT Y DO THEY WANT TO BE FAVOURED?THERE WAS ONE TIME IN A BUS THERE WASNT ENOUGHT SPACE SO THE CONDUCTOR SUGGESTED THT MEN SHOULD ALLOW WOMEN TO SIT AND THN US WE STAND,I JUST TOLD HIM THT IF MEN ARE ABLE TO STAND EVEN WOMEN CAN MANAGE- THTS GENDER EQUALITY 50 – 50. UNLESS WOMEN ARE WEAK THEN LET THEM ACCEPT IT EN NOT B CHEATING US

  7. 10. @ 15 mwinelubemba1 she was just a dumb girl mate I’ve been in classes where women were the smartest. and I’m talking High performance schools N uni

  11. @# 15 Wanu Ngwee, wandepaula hahhahahahahahahaahhahahaaha… 50% of the Mushota type in Parliament,Porn,lesbianism/homosexuality,sodomy, would definitely be legalised.

  12. finally, finally the president has said something that is clearly right. but more important he has mentioned job creation-the reason he was elected.
i also don’t believe in laws that predetermines how many women should be in gov. i think our society should choose to move at its own pace. and lets not make every issue about war between man and woman. we are not at war- a message specially for those women lobby groups.

  13. thumbs up,they women are taking us for granted.they will offend you deliberately to a point where u have no choice and punch, coz they know they are more favoured by the law. let us compete fairly, they are always bakward and there is no way they can lead us unless one proves it.i shugged alot of them at school for me to help them pass exams.let them stop the dependency syndrome if they want to compete.

  14. Don`t start disadvantaging the so called advantaged. Too many institutions talking about and supporting the female. Just fair competition.

  15. Clearly, Zambia is still a sexist, conservative country where women are expected to be barefoot, wear chitenges and work in the field all day while men sit under a tree drinking chibuku and still demand to be respected. The problem is that men in Zambia always want to preside over women and suppress them without giving them an opportunity to reach their full potential. Still a long to go for women in Zed!!

  16. VERY MUCH IN SUPPORT OF THE PRESIDENT.
WOMEN COME ON, WHY SAYING GENDER EQUALITY WEN YOU WANT TO BE FAVOURED? ATI WHAT A MAN CAN DO A WOMAN CAN DO, BUT YOU ALWAYS WANT TO BE OFFERED FREE THINGS OR PUT FIRST OVER A MAN, KWALIBA……
NO 50-50 CHABE, KULWAFYE BONSE HAHAHAHAHA MWAKAPA BA GELO, AMATAKO SANA MUPARLIAMENT NO DEVELPMNTAL ISSUES ABENA LUBINDA, KUNDA KULALANDEFYA ATI BOKOSI NOT DEVELOPMENT SO A COMPITING WOMAN IS WHAT WE NEED YOU CANT BE TEMPETED TO STEP/USE HER BCOZ SHE WANTS TO BE FAVOURED.
NOWANDA YOU RE BEEN RAPED, SEXUAL ABUSED ETC BY MEN COZ MUFWAYA FYA FREE KUMA GUYS, WORK HAD & COMPETE MEN WONT STEP ON YOUR HEAD OUR LOVED LADIES PLEASE!!!!!********

  17. I do agree with the statement about NOT giving positions to women on a silver platter just because we are talking gender issues. HOWEVER, i belive that there need to be a good succession plan for empowering the stronger candidates and having a skills transfer in the process. I agree that everyone needs to work hard to be in the position of power.. M

  18. How would you implement quotas in our current parliamentary system? It would mean changing our system to proportional representation which has its own challenges. Every social group will be asking for representation. I stand to be corrected, but I believe that women make up the largest number of voters, so why do they need affirmative action? Let them vote for women candidates.
