Chief Mukuni of the Toka-Leya says the people of western Province have resolved to secede from Zambia because they have not been treated well by successive governments.
The traditional leader has however noted that the route that the people of western province are trying to take is not in the best interest of the Zambian people.
Chief Mukuni has told QFM News that the people of western province contributed significantly in making Zambia a unitary state adding that it is important that Zambia remains a unitary and peaceful state.
Chief Mukuni has since called for an amicable solution to the issue surrounding Barotseland agreement by all concerned parties.
The Barotseland National Council has resolved that western province breaks away from Zambia.
And some Lusaka residents have expressed concern over the resolutions of the Barotseland National Council for western province to secede from Zambia.
Some of the people talked by QFM news in a random interview have since called on the government to ensure that Zambia remains a unitary state.
Daniel Zulu notes that the people of western province need to learn from the Mongu riots which left a number of people dead.
He says the people of western province need to realize that Zambia has a lot of natives groups who will not allow part of their land to secede.
Another citizen who declined to be named noted that secession of western province has the potential to cause chaos in the country.
He has called on the government to use its strength to bring the situation under control.
And another citizen only identified as Brian urged the government to ensure that the issue is put to a referendum to allow the people of Zambia decide on whether the Barotseland should secede or not.
He adds that the people of western province should learn from the Sudan conflict which claimed million of lives.

We should engage in this debate with cool heads. It is just possible that now the time has come to evaluate whether villages and chiefs are relevant in a modern society. I am tired of reading opinnions on this issue. I am only waiting to hear that the government is sitting at the table and having a dialogue with these people to work out a peaceful solution.There are many ways to solve this problem and secession is definately not the only option.
Just remember Buthelezi and the Inkhata Zulu party and the havoc they caused in the 90s because of their political demands. There was also some bloodshed prior to the solution but Chief Buthelezi reached a peaceful agreement with the state by establishing a constitutional monarchy for the Zulus. Buthelezi is now the head of the Zulu nation, which exists within the S.A. republic and does not contravene against it’s republican status.
Nine Chale I’ve usually respected your contributions but to say Buthelezi is head of the Zulu nation is ridiculous. He is the head of the Inkhata Freedom Party. Haven’t you ever heard of King Goodwill Zwelithini? Well, Google him up. Buthelezi himself was incapacitated by the ANC when they made him Minister of Home Affairs which was really the end of him. Last time I checked, Kwazulu-Natal was a province in South Africa not an independent kingdom and Buthelezi was nowhere near being king there.

The Zambian Government should treat the resolutions of the BNC as a service delivery protest and take corrective measures. I read some alarming contributions to the effect that Western Province is not the only underveloped province in Zambia therefore the Lozis should not overreact. This is as if to say it is okay to for the government not to develop most parts of the country. This is very backward thinking. The government should be on its toes trying to develop the country not relaxing because Zambians are happy wallowing in poverty and lack of development. Make those politicians to work for the country otherwise they will just concentrate on stealing state funds at the expense of developing the country, especially the rural areas.

#28 Nine Chale, minor correction: Chief Buthelezi is not the head of the Zulu nation. The head of the Zulu nation is King Goodwill Zwelithini. Chief Buthelezi is the leader of the Inkhata Freedom Party(IFP) which draws most of its support from the amaZulu people of Kwazulu-Natal province. You may also be interested to know that the premier of Kwazulu-Natal province is an ANC member because the ANC had a slight edge over IFP. Hope this minor correction is in order.

This Barotseland problem has been/will always be a thorn to the govt of the day as long as our leaders fail to handle the issue properly. If Bembas had dominated the Zambian politics, would President Chiluba have gone for Mwanawasa as his successor instead of his loyal right-hand man, Sata in 2001? And after Mwanawasa died, did a Bemba aspire for the Presidency of the MMD? Answer is No! Instead, it was RB, Magande, Chituwo, Mpondela and Shikapwasha. In the end, RB went through, although I think Magande was unfairly isolated and he should have become President instead.

Besides, if Bembas had dominated Zambian Politics, would Sata have waited until September 2011 to win the Presidency, losing 3 successive elections on the way? In my own opinion, that just shows that Bembas are being unfairly accused of what they aren’t. Because if they truly dominated Zambian Politics as people seem to think here, Sata could have either succeeded Chiluba or won the Presidency on his first attempt in the 2001 elections. I know, all this hatred towards Bembas is being orchestrated by the CULWASTANS in the UPND, no doubt about it!! I am for One Zambia One Nation but I am at loss on this one because of the false promises by some people. This is a practical example of “You can fool some people some time but you can’t fool all the people all the time”. After this issue is resolved as it will, we should never ever allow anyone or any group of people to lie their way to power.
Its only bembas who want to hang on to the lozis why? Is it that they cant survive without the lozis? Whatever, you say wont help because BA1964 was a legal contract between Zambia and the lozis. I am not lozi, but understand that lozis have a much better position than Zambia. If the Zambian government were smart, they should have called for negotiations. Some of you blogers do not know the map of zambia, how can you assume Mukuni village in southern province can be ruled by Litunga in western province. Just because there are so many lozis who in Livingstone town does not mean the city is in western province, it’s because is was once the capital city of zambia and the only developed a bit close to western province. Just because there are many bemba speaking people in Ndola, does not mean the City belongs to Luapula province, it remains for Lambas and nothing but lambas the owners, the rest are squaters who can leave at any time. Chief Mukuni is the spokes person for Southern province royal establishment, borders will never change at all, southern is southern, and western province is western province. Mukuni just aired his views.
If handouts were to go by in terms of development, western province would have been the most developed, because these guys use to receive mineral royalties from the british on land which did not belong to them. Now the anger they have is that under zambians laws no chief is special all are treated the same, hence seperating from zambia for them to start eating again on top of their subjects heads the way they use to have become the solution. If you realise all those ones pushing for seperation have connections to the royal families who tend to benefit from the move. A common Lozi should not even be cheated by these moves, they will be in poverty without human rights as these royal families are never questioned, e.g Swazi, lesotho where if you question you disappear in thin air.
People should get it right. Zambia has never been ruled by a bemba; KK (malawian), Chiluba (congo), Mwanawasa (central), Banada (Eastern) and Sata (Bisa). And Remember Chitimukulu was for RB not Sata. Get your freaking facts right. Bembas are from the Kasama area in Northern province. And these people are voted by people across the nation anyways.
