Three Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) political party supporters have been sentenced to 3 years imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting a Muvi TV crew in Lusaka in July last year.

Magistrate Alice Walusiku in passing judgment, said that journalists have a duty to investigate, disseminate, research and inform, hence they should not be hindered as they carry out their noble tasks. Magistrate Walusiku also said that her court would be failing in its duties if stiff punishment was not meted out on the offenders as many would continue to perpetrate the vice.

In July last year more than 100 ruling MMD cadres severely beat a MUVI TV news crew and confiscated their equipment.

The cadres then also almost raped the female journalists who were among the Muvi TV news crew.

The journalists had gone to Nakachenje area in Lusaka West to interview a woman who had been attacked by the same MMD cadres and had had,her land grabbed from her.

Reporter Dainess Nyirenda and Cameraperson, Annita Kalwani suffered internal injuries after they were trampled upon by the cadres.

Driver, Edward Ntele suffered a deep cut on his forehead and while another cameraperson, Emmanuel Kaluba had his lips cut in the fracas.

The MMD cadres confiscated a camera tripod stand, a microphone, 4 mobile phones and undisclosed amounts of money.

The matter was quickly reported to Matero police Station and officers were quickly mobilised to the incident scene.

MMD Lusaka Province Vice Youth Chairman, Watson Mutonga physically identified the MMD cadres, who assaulted the MUVI TV news crew.

The assaulted MUVI TV personnel narrated the ordeal describing it as uncalled for. Camera person, Annita Kalwani almost shed tears when describing how she was almost gang-raped. Another cameraperson, Emmanuel Kaluba said he was beaten badly because of the camera he was holding.Driver, Edward Ntele has also narrated that he was hit with a huge stone on his head making him lose consciousness.

Meanwhile the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia has welcomed the sentencing and said it was a timely warning to all those with plans or are in the habit of perpetrating violence against media practitioners.

We are convinced that the sentence has sent a strong signal to perpetrators of violence against the media practitioners and urge all the journalists in Zambia to continue reporting cases of violence against them so that perpetrators can be brought to book.

  1. Yah!!! These cadres should learn a lesson that they need to behave themselves. It was very unfortunate how cadres were perpetrating political violence with impunity!!!!

  2. I am wondering if these thugs were going to be caged had MMD remained in power. Anyway, its good to see some justice being meted out on these overzealous cadres!

  3. ” …MMD cadres …” how many ba LT naimwe?! And what is the gender composition? GOD BLESS ZAMBIA

  4. OK, good! But if this kind of political violence is ever going to end, PF cadres (in fact, any and all cadres) who commit similar offenses must also be taken to task. For example, how about the ones who tried to take over the TAZAMA pipeline office earlier this week simply be told to air their grievances through proper channels – they marched into the director’s office and tried to lock the man out which is clearly illegal so should have had charges brought against them.

  5. Let this be a strong Message to people with attitudes like William Banda. Its time such nonsense stopped in our country. Next Sentence all those cadres that bring confusion to Public Gathering like Funerals. Well Done Magistrate..

  6. Next PF, please. HH speak loud now. This is encouragement that you can talk without any intimidation from PF cadres. Thanks court!!!

  7. Did a certain Ukwa unilaterally free a guy by the name of Zulu who was involved in an assault that was filmed on television. Is it the same Ukwa who infamously organised the distribution of pangas and other weapons used in the hacking of innocent civilians in Chawama in Lusaka in 2001? Is it the same Ukwa who watched quietly and has yet to publicly denounce pf cadres who assaulted HH at the funeral of the late Princess Nakatindi Wina? The same Ukwa who derisively dismissed the fact that there was a  break in into the home of  Nevers Mumba last week?

  8. This is not news. News to me will be the day l will read that cadres of the ruling party have been convicted for assaulting opposition party members. That is the day, Zambia has changed or is now civilised. Unfortunately it is still backward with stone age leaders. Remember what happened to the so called judge Zulu or whatever the fool’s name is!

  9. I would say that thier behviour is nothing different from the PF CADRE Juge Ngoma who was pardoned my his excellency

  10. This saying is one of the oldest notions known to man in that it is the basis of many of the ethical systems on which societies have been built. Many expressions of it in various versions have existed in the classic literature of Greece and Rome, as well as in Islamic, Taoist, Sikh and other religious texts. The English ‘do unto others…’ version is the biblical expression of it, and this appears in Matthew 7:12: (The Miles Coverdale Bible), 1535:

  11. Unruly Patriotic Front cadres, this morning attacked and nearly lynched a ZNBC crew that went to cover the PF Lusaka province conference and launch of the party manifesto.

The visibly drunk cadres, who where deployed at the entrance of Garden house motel blocked the crew from entering the venue and threatened to burn the vehicle together with the crew inside it.

The PF carders who were armed with sticks and stones harassed the journalists accusing them of not covering the PF leader Michael Sata.

Some cadres also attempted to grab the camera from ZNBC cameraman Cuthbert Miti.
