THE SENTIMENTAL VOILINIST by Mwangase Isunge

Absence feeds the love we
feel,
as the silence makes our
music real,
she sits solemnly to play her
song,
some moments last forever
some only so long.
She strikes her note,
and the orchestra sweeps up,
as a wave of emotion,
screaming of love.
The vibration of the notes
and keys,
as fleeting and
tremulous as her fading
heart,
passions rise, as the meeting
of lips,
hands caress the strings
and float lovingly above
piano keys.
Fingers ride violin curves,
cradling it closer,
as though a lover in
passionate kiss.
Above the wave of music is
the unheard,
the fading beat of a dying
heart.
As we leave so many words
unsaid, as we repose in Eros’
embrace.
Rest comes to her song,
Under her closed lids tears
form,
The cuts from broken strings
on her face,
Had stopped her heart
before deaths embrace,
she holds on to a violin she
can never again play,
and i love you, words i can
never again say.

SORRY I STAINED YOUR LETTER by Subila Esperanza Chilupula

Hello old friend, old lover
How’s your life? Saw your photo on a magazine cover
Seems you are better off now that we are done
Well hats off, well done
Tell me, do you ever think about us?
Remember, your son Adam?
Yeah, him, the kid you left on my doorstep in a pram
Well without you he turned out fine
Yeah his eyes may be yours but he is still mine
I told him about you
Don’t worry, the great woman I knew
The one who had class
Not the new pardon, newly bred ass
Wonder if there is a new girl in my life?
Nah, we are doing just fine I don’t need a wife
Yeah I do the chores
That’s right, don’t need you or another, you all are pardon, a bunch of whores
Diapers and bottles? Don’t worry I made it
What you didn’t know we are passed that bit?
He is eight now
Uhuh, my turn to smile and bow
Attends a great school
And trust me he ain’t no fool
Guess we both know that’s thanks to me
For I taught him right you see
Why am I writing this?
Just letting you know what you did miss
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not for the money
Hell, I am so rich now I could buy you honey
Forgive the tear stain
For I could not help but cry over the hurt and pain
As much as we made it,
I kinda always pictured it with you in it
You know, watching him together as he slept at night
Watching you feeding and cooing him to sleep, what a sight
Do I still love you?
Well yeah, a part of me longs for you
Would I ask you to come back?
Nah, this ain’t no Mills and Boon paperback
I guess I wrote to say goodbye,
I never got to coz you left without a where and why
So old friend, old lover
Goodbye, oh and PS: from the hurt you caused I did recover
Sorry I stained your letter
At least the envelope is better

‘MONDAY MORNIN BLUEZ’ by Chifwanti Zulu

The alarm goes off, snoozes then rings a little more
I knock it a few times and toss it to the floor
Here comes Monday and its usual morning blues
Gotta wake up early and go to that place called school
Soon as I get warm enough, I’ll get out of bed, just need five minutes
Half an hour later, the bed feels warmer and I’m still in it
It’s freezing out there, I just wanna stay in the house
Hell, I’m off the bed, left foots lands right on a sharp toy, ouch!
Limping into the shower, out in five
The water is deathly cold and I plan on staying alive
A steaming cup of coffee burns my cherry-red tongue
Another ouch, I puncture a lung
I get into creased denims and a blood stained t-shirt
Nah, it’s hot ketchup from last night’s meal, damn! that shit hurts
I throw my books into my dirty bag
Gloves are missing, check under that blue rug
Hair is all messed, where ‘s the brush?
That stupid clock is staring, hate being in a rush
I’m running late, can’t find my right shoe
I’m freaking out, God I hate school!
Out the house to the station, sprinting all the way
No one at the station, damn it, I forgot, it’s a holiday
