OLYMPICS: Horn Blows Choombe Out of Olympics

Share

Gilbert Choomba failed to live up to his pre-fight hype in London after exiting in his Olympic Games light welterweight contest on Tuesday night.

Choombe was outclassed 19-5 by Jeffrey Horn of Australia in their round of 32 bout.

The Maamba boxer failed to deal with the fast footwork of Horn and was out-boxed by the Australian and Oceania champion.

Choombe was riveted with very poor balance, showed little defensive skill or jab quality despite his good reach in what was the most-one sided contest of the light welterweight class on the evening.

The Zambian trailed 6-1, 4-2 and 9-2 in round 1, round 2 and round 3 respectively.

Choombe exit leaves four athletes left in the hunt.

Judoka Boas Munyonga and swimmer Zane Jordan have both exited from the Olympics at the preliminary stage.

  1. yaba, awe mwandi. ba boxer besu bachilamonekafye kuchula kuchula. the attire, was that cheap silk or what? He needs proper grooming and good milile, he could be ok for the future

  2. Ine uluse, please stop stop embarrasing those Zambians. I hope somebody is there to help those innocent Zambians get through Lunch lines, they may even be scared of going to the toilets.

  3. I salute our atheletes with or without medals!! the important thing about these games is to compete & keep that “DESIRE TO ACHIEVE” BURNING!!! For when you lose the “ability to desire & yearn”, then you lack a soul, & probably are as good as dead!
Keep it up, for at least you have been brave to compete at the highest level & give an example to so many young Zambians, some hope to look forward to emulating you – aiming for the sky in their pursuits!!

  4. Hey just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your article seem to be running off the screen in Firefox. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. The style and design look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon. Kudos

  5. They should have taken Kapenta, ifisashi ne finkubala. Akabwali na Chibwantu anwako before entering the ring. Ba Zambia ya shani kanshi?

  6. Why didnt Esther Phiri Nsanda represent Zambia? Has she called it a quit or mayb big pros arent allowed? Tough luck ba Zambia…………………………………….

  7. This young Bemba chap called, Choombe is a let down. A tonga bull can do better than this disappointing Bemba chap from Chinsali. Hard luck!

  8. Yes, why is FIFA not making a decision? Hopefully there is nothing corrupt going on out there.

As for Choombe, I had my own doubts when I set my eyes on him. His basic and final mistake was to think that he was going to knock out the Australian. He was not throwing punches, which are what bring points. As a boxer one cannot bank on knocking someone out. A knock out is the last thing one can hope for.

The guy was like a beginner. He appeared lost, as if saying, “Ukulwa noMusungu”…?

In the end we were embarrassed by the 1905 score.

  9. @ EX ZIT pro boxers do not compete at the Olympics, as such Esther cant.

@ kamwendo I hear you, but when do we draw the line? We have participated at the Olympics since 1964 missin only the 1976 games and in 48 years only have two medals to show, a bronze and a silver. If the desire grows after participating then our desire should be extremely strong now not this nonsense we are experiencing now. After eleven Olympics we are still chasing a desire!! There is obviously something fundamentaly wrong and yet we still do stupid things like send a bigger delegation than athletes. I always new this goverment would be another joke. We need proper sports leadership who understand what it will take to get medals.

  10. @Dr mpho, ulifontini sana, is choombe bemba or tonga? U shameless tribalist. Instead of encouraging this maamba boy u bring in tribe.anyway wat do u xpect from this alshabaab tribe who are nt different from boko haram

  11. Watched the fight with my children and kept on teasing me what nshima can do compared to rice/potatoes. Anyway, he represented Zambia and the games are not about winning. At least we have 1 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals so far.

  12. Please don’t take them if they don’t meet the grade! The U.S. holds trials and there is fierce competition and only the best (medal worthy) are picked! We miss Webby Mhango, Albert and Francis Musankabala, the Lotties, Luipa, Chiteule and not these current pretenders! Is Mr. Nelson Sapi still there? Did you see Nkana Amateur Boxing Club and the way it was run? Please better not take them if they can’t even go past first round.

  13. I also dont agree with Kamwendo but my bone to pick is not with him. We attach little importance to sport and arts in Zambia. These dont just need a donation from govt for an occasion but planned development. Meaning we should build sports stadia and should have sports schools and or academies. Isn’t it a shame that Zambia has no Music schools except for a one course offered at Evelyn Hone after 50 years of independence, No drama, film, or arts school. On top of all that no laws to nurture and protect these industries!

  14. Exposure, exposure, exposure. To get winners you must let them travel. To gain money you must spend money!!!! Maybe these associations need an economist to see the financial gains associated with sport not just for the athlete but for the nation. Kenya has people paying lots of money to train with their people and ka ngono comes in. Come on, we need fresh blood in these ‘of zambia’ sports groups.
But there is also another side of the story. When I was at school and college there was so much cheating and getting underage or ‘borrowing’ athletes from secondary or primary schools to represent a team. And if that is the foundation it is possible that the wrong people went as well.
