MINISTER of Sport, Youth and Child Development Chishimba Kambwili says there is need for local authorities to begin to implement the law that regulates the operation of bars so that young people don’t get wasted by alcoholism, drugs and sex.

Mr Kambwili said the law on bars and under-age patronage is very clear, except that it lacks enforcement.

The minister was commenting on First Lady Christine Kaseba’s concern that youths in Zambia spend more time on alcohol, drugs and pornography.

“I agree with the First Lady, our society is slowly losing its values and giving way to vices because we have failed to implement certain laws such as not opening bars as early as 07:00 hours,” Mr Kambwili said.

He also blamed parents for giving their children too much freedom.

“Government can give direction but parents have the final say on the lives of their children,” he said.

Mr Kambwili said parents are supposed to regulate children and try to shape them into responsible adults. He said his children live abroad but they are cultured.

“I completed form five without tasting alcohol. My first-born daughter is studying medicine abroad and my second-born son is studying engineering in the UK but none of them take alcohol,” Mr Kambwili said.

He said some parents believe it is a sign of love for their children when they allow them to drink and bring intimate friends home.

“When we say we want to re-introduce national service for skills training, some parents are in the forefront condemning the move which is intended to help young people,” Mr Kambwili said.

He said his ministry will embark on a massive sensitisation campaign to educate young people about the dangers of alcohol, drugs and sex.

  1. Its not as easy as that Mr Minister. You need to give young people what they want. The are no play areas for young people in Zambia. No free sporting facilities they can use. This was reflected in how many sports starts we had at the Olympics and how far they went. Investment in sport is poor.Regulation and enforcement without alternatives is being irresponsible on the part of gvt

    • #1 Chills – Actually the minister is right, parents have a bigger role to play in tandem with govt enforcement. national service is a also a good idea but how it is executed is what needs to be carefully planned

  2. Kambwili is the only Minister who has kept the PF Legacy from its promises before 9/20. he has remained focussed. His character is what we expected from Sata himself unfortunately he has even been sidelined because of keeping PF Legacy……shame

  3. Curb it first in your cabinet Toadface.Taima & Masumba are certainly drivers of these vices after their unhonourable conduct with Fally Ipupa’s dancing bit.ch.

  4. Implement the law but also offer suitable alternatives to keep the young people busy. They say an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.

  5. Blame blame, thats all they know. The game is geting to old now time to work iwe.if i say anything is possible it is true, look at him he is our minister Chishimba Kambwili .life is bitch

  6. organisations like ZAAA,FAZ,VOLLEYBALL,ZABF, these and racket organisations should be considered seriously for the youths to get involved find employment through sport and expose more talents,it would earn us a good living

  7. Go for campaign against wife buttering and abuse. Those youth who go for alcohol are the children of the poor who cannot afford to take their children abroad.Following the rejection by society they resort to alcohol and drugs. The bursaries which were meant for the children from the poor homes are given to the likes of Kambwili’s daughter and son to study medicine and engineering. Corruption of the highest nature to deprive the poor.

    • You are one of the people who ignorant and stupid.. this man is trying make a point saying that even though his daughter and son are abroad they still have that fear because of the way they were brought up, ie with fear and respect. no one is talking corruption.. and if you better you would indeed find out that this man pays for both his children, he refused to put them on scholarship.. so before you put up your views  you should atleast research and say something sensible..
You are the people whoi are busy looking sor problems where they are not, always having a negative attitude will not help us move forward.. so is you have nothing sensible to say.. just say anythins at all

This sounds more like a plan to go preachig!. Churches are already doing this Mr. Minister. Concetrate on finding land for play parks, museums, sports facilities etc. If you demolish the 29 beerhalls in Chelstone, a play park or sports facility can be built. Along the way you create jobs. Remember you were voted to think bane!

  9. Firstly, you do not need money for you to have moral standards. Clearly our society is loosing its values. Nevertheless, both government and parents have a role to play in the lives of our youth. The bible clearly says “train a child the way he should go and when he grows old he’ll never depart from it”.The government on the other hand needs to facilitate for youth activities and create jobs.

  10. What do you expect when lcc are giving licences to bars to operate freely where vices are in residential areas example lagos rd in rhodespark all sorts of vices there

  11. Ba minister bring your children back we need them to attend National Service! It shows you the fallacy about National Service. Those with money will sent their children abroad while the masses are busy attending National Service. Its a silly plan that will not address the issue of youth unemployment.

  12. Kambwili is useful. He is proving to be a steady minister with a focus. Let’s help him with ideas to refine his work. I am glad many contributions are saying let’s find alternatives also. Let councils restrict open hours for bars and they should also give land for sports and other facilities. Too much beer in the blood of our olympic team.

  13. Iwe Kambwili the situation is worse than you understand it. Our society is not “.. slowly losing values..” it has already lost them. Now, you bring your children to UNZA so that you can closely monitor them too and stop lying to us that they take alchohol when their behaviour while in the UK is the exact opposite of what they EXHIBIT here in Zambia.

  14. yap yap yap yap please stop talking and start acting. can you concentrate on development that will create jobs for these poor kids. In the mean time leave them to their endeavors.
