US President Barack Obama re-elected for four more years

Share

Reuters reports that President Barack Obama won re-election to a second term in the White House on Tuesday, television networks projected, beating Republican challenger Mitt Romney after a long and bitter campaign.

Obama defeated Romney in a series of key swing states despite a weak economic recovery and persistent high unemployment as U.S. voters decided between two starkly different visions for the country.

Obama’s victory in the hotly contested swing state of Ohio – as projected by TV networks – put him over the top in the fight for the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the White House and ended Romney’s hopes of pulling off a string of swing-state upsets.

Obama scored narrow wins in Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire – all states that Romney had contested – while the only swing state captured by Romney was North Carolina, according to network projections.

There was no immediate word from the Romney camp on the reported results.

At least 120 million American voters had been expected to cast votes in the race between the Democratic incumbent and Romney after a campaign focused on how to repair the ailing U.S. economy.

Obama enters his second four-year term faced with a difficult task of tackling $1 trillion annual deficits, reducing a $16 trillion national debt, overhauling expensive social programs and dealing with a gridlocked U.S. Congress that looked likely to maintain the same partisan makeup.

Obama’s projected victory would set the country’s course for the next four years on spending, taxes, healthcare, the role of government and foreign policy challenges such as the rise of China and Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Each man offered different policies to cure what ails America’s weak economy, with Obama pledging to raise taxes on the wealthy and Romney offering across-the-board tax cuts as a way to ignite strong economic growth.

Inside Obama’s Chicago campaign headquarters, staffers erupted into cheers and high fives as state after state was called for the president.

Obama watched the returns on television at his Chicago home. Senior campaign strategist David Axelrod said via email that he was feeling “great.”

Romney made last-minute visits to Ohio and Pennsylvania on Tuesday to try to drive up turnout in those states, while Vice President Joe Biden was dispatched to Ohio. Obama remained in his hometown of Chicago.

  1. It’s not over until Romney concedes. One of his advisers was on ALJ saying it is too early to call Ohio. Until Romney concedes it is not over as there is potential for legal challenges…….

  2. Long live Obama and may God be with you. Let the Americans regain their economic dominance and revive the American dream. We want a strong America both economically and militarily, God bless America.

  3. After billions of dollars spent on campaign its has come to incumbent president to lead again, 270 electoral votes needed to be declared US president. Obama poured 274 after tailing behind Mitty Romney in republican strong hold states by 34 senate votes, until Ohio battle ground state gave Obama a lead it was well know at this time that Obama would carry the day, despite loosing popular votes Obama continues to occupy white house. congrats Obama.

  4. only that in democratic nation majority wins, overall Mitty Romney would have been a best candidate to economically take America forward in the next 4 years, because after recession most people are still jobless. Romney yet to concede defeat

  5. Yap, it’s indeed offer. Even if Romney gets Ohio, Virginia and Florida that would only give him 264, 6 shy of 270. Obama just won Colorado, the other key swing state that Romney was counting on. It’s all over!!

  6. I cannot even stand or bear to contemplate a Rmoney win.Rmoney (not Romney)is all he is as he just cares about the rich, more senseless tax cuts and deficits.Obama all the way.

  7. I like this result from Alabama:

Amend (State) Constitution to set legislative salaries at Alabama median household income? 68.6% YES

Imagine if Zambian MPs (…not to mention our President) were paid the median household income? Who knows, maybe some would go into politics mainly to serve?

  8. Not na Bulaky tewakwangalilako! thank God i wont have to see that irritating face AGAINNNNNNNNNN! now he even speaks more about God and good about Obama typical human being! Ashininkisha, Go Obama!

  9. Romney just conceded, its game over! You need to win swing States or provinces to win an election, it is also not about your money but identifying with struggling families, no need to be hateful-Romney kept on saying we will take back the White House, we will take back America, take back from who??? He has already conceded defeat and can go enjoy his money as Obama starts his second term next year January without an election in mind and I am sure he will be more free in his policy direction!!

  10. Congrats Obama.  Now deal with why a lot of voters  voted against you. mend the economy, reduce unemployment and u shall leave a good legacy  for Mrs Hilary Clinton to Ride on.

Our Ukwa instead of mending the  economy and coming up with policies to reduce unemployment, he is busy targeting the opposition to stifle them.  Ukwa reign is NOT democracy where u prevent your friends from holding rallies.

  11. From  CNN and BBC:

7 November 2012 Last updated at 06:32 GMT Help The former governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney has admitted defeat in the US election with an emotional speech at an event in Boston.
With results in from most states, he said he had called President Obama to congratulate him on
     winning a second term.
Eeish  Democracy  at play. NOT Ukwa Comedy!!!!

  12. Congratulations Pres Obama you have shown that with God all things are possible.I wish Zambians could learn from Americans. It was nice to see Romney congratulate Obama and also Obama talking about unity with the losers for him to achieve the goals. No riots people rejoicing and accepting defeat.I wonder if will arrive at that civilization? We could have been there cos we started very well in the elections of 1995 and 2001 but hell fell loose there after with cadres fighting one another.Pls UPND,PF MMD ETC learn from the American elections.I really enjoyed following American elections so intertaining.I prayed for OBAMA to win and am happy.

  13. Mpangula Mputyu, I am not sure who is Ukwa you refer to, but lessons for Zambia is that hateful capaigns like Romney preaching to take back white house and America, as if Obama wasnt America dont help. One needs to win swing states or provinces in our case, and those are won by persuasion not insults and aggression. I my view 2016, President Sata would win by larger margin than 2011, reasons: Incumbenacy, RB was more credible opponent than Dr. Nevers Mumba, HH and supporters hateful campaign and insults against head of state will definitely backfire-people not happy listening to name calling, swing provinces e.g CB, Cental, Lusaka. Solid achievements that can be pointed at by 2016. @Mary, RB and HEMCS hand over was smooth, no ivolence in Mufumbwe as UPND is not fielding candidate, period!!

    • Swing Provinces in Zambia are North Western and Western provinces.Your prediction of HEMCS banging the 2016 election is wrong no matter the incumbency you are talking about. MCS had a good chance but he has messed up himself and not even the youths that supported him will give him a vote in 2016 if he decides to contest.

  14. Both Obama and RB failed to improve their respective economies but one got re-elected and the other rejected!

  15. While the US progresses, african countries like Zambia retrogress, listening to leaders who promise heaven and earth when they can’t even deliver a hectare of poverty stricken land …. God Help Us!

  16. second term for Obama, second term for Micheal……… no governor for Massachusetts, no governor for Choma!!! congrats obama!!!!

    • No, In Zambia they do not congratulate each other mainly because it’s personal and is based on individuals and not on vision and concept. Visions and concepts are way ahead of an average voting Zambian.

President Rupiah Banda Bids Farewell to Zambians

“IN MY YEARS OF RETIREMENT, I HOPE TO WATCH ZAMBIA GROW. I GENUINELY WANT ZAMBIA TO FLOURISH. WE SHOULD ALL WANT ZAMBIA TO FLOURISH. SO, I CONGRATULATE MICHAEL SATA ON HIS VICTORY. I HAVE NO ILL FEELING IN MY HEART, THERE IS NO MALICE IN MY WORDS. I WISH HIM WELL IN HIS YEARS AS PRESIDENT.
I PRAY HIS POLICIES WILL BEAR FRUIT.”

  17. That is gods wish and no one and no amount of money can change that period. there are people who are just born to lead. Let us focus on the local Zambia scene.

  18. It’s liberating to live in a Country whose political system focuses on vision and concept as the core issue and not on individuals and characters. We have a long way to go in Zambia. A long long way…

  19. Just saw celebrations from Kenya on CNN, got chills all over me, looking are all those poor loving pipo happy jumping like that? They are are so happy for him wish his parents were around to see what their product is made of and i hope Kenyans can get past their tribalism towards one another.

  20. Dear Snatched#22. No, in Zambia they do not congratulate each other mainly because politics are taken as a personal matter and are primarily based on characters and not on vision and concept.

    • Yes there are exceptions. The norm in our Country, rather than the exception, is that politicians do not congratulate each other.

  21. I am gutted I have always liked the Republican

He has only made it again because of the color of his skin
    disgrace!
US will regret this seeing how their economy has tumbled coupled with the warin Libya that was a premeditated mistake. I am shocked
    Thanks

    • But you are the one who says blacks can’t achieve anything! Meanwhile you boast of being a PhD students…A BLACK MUSHOTA…what’s your stance?

    • For once you have acknowledged the power of your skin man! Yes the world economy is struggling it could have been bad if American went for your choice. Thanks for your drama but if you are gutted for sure, I’m pleased! I know you like it!

    • you need to stop throwing your race under the bus even Barrack obama who is more close to white than u does not highlight been close to white people as the best thing ever, opinion and likes are respected but you have no cultural balance and self love you a fraud so stop talking about the United states where u dont live and know nothing about you dont know jack about the states and the ELECTORAL process this is a tastement of democracy u guys are not pure democray u are socialistic / Monarchy subjects with some kind of autonmy my be send scotish political novices to the power of david plouff , David Axlerode s machine then you can get off the ol ladies gripe AMERICA did long time after 200 years the mature faster and elceted a man of colour then you and your silly ass open your

  22. Congratulations to Mr Obama. He has many enemies some of whom campaigned against him merely on account of colour of his skin, I have in mind that racist called Donald Trump who has tried to humiliate and embarrass Obama over his citizenship and academic qualifications. Shame on Donald Trump and the likes of him. It’s like some Zambian clique who think Zambia belongs to them and them alone.

    • the comparison is does not match your thinking is abysmal , just fight hard and dislodge the click then domocracy is a process whinning is bitchery OBAMA IS A WHINNER so if you come to Zambian politics study obama team then go and enforce it on this click democracy is patient not volotile viteriole in sleak blogging packedged wording man

  23. Points to learn from US elections
    1. All candidates partcipate in debates 2. debate are on issues 2. voters votes on issues articulated 4. the losser congratulates the winner 5. riggings accusations are never raised 6. supporter for the looser also congratulates their candidate for a good try 7. all are happy that election period has ended 8. the loser may not start eyeing for the next election to stand again but will leave others to try as well

  24. On the foreign policy front, Obama has been a disappointment with regard to the middle-east peace process. He has not even attempted to solve the Israeli-Palestinian impasse. This is where Bill Clinton scores more points than Obama. Thumbs up to him though for stopping George Bush’s unilateral decisions without seeking consensus at the UN.

  25. Zambia should take a leaf from Ghana how they managed their election campaigns and particularly presidential debates very civilised and matured.I was watching the Presidential debates on CBS TV a week or two ago and could if proud to how some African countries have embraced democracy. No disturbances or confusion from the opponents. The current was not bullying and intimidating others unlike the scenarios in Zambia. No name calling only debating issues on economy,Agriculture,Employment etc. Before we measure our standards to American can we measure up to the Ghana one and see how we perform.

  26. American politics and the latest elections in particular have taught the world one lesson: that a well informed electorate will elect a candidate with a pragmatic approach to solving economic woes. Mitt Romney was peddling the idea of bringing back the American dream which ironically with its toxic home loans was, to a large measure, instrumental in plunging the global financial system into the worst melt-down the world has ever experienced. Obviously his intentions were undoubtedly to enrich a few well-connected money barons in his league. Reasonable Americans read through this outlandish rhetoric and treated it with the contempt it deserved. How I long to reach this level of political maturity!

  27. Nawo ma republicans Njovu ija ..where did they get it as their Logo…?

No wonder Romney has lost ayi because we all know that Njovu siyithawa maningi…lol. Anyway Congrats to Obama for a well deserved victory.

  28. Shame on all american white pastors that have never wanted BARACK OBAMA on account of his colour. These white pastors who preach on TBN and other christian channels have said a lot of unpalatable things about obama coz of his race. They forget that its not what they say that matters, its what GOD says that matters.

  29. Victory based on projected results is called rigging in Africa! Anyway behind every succesful erection is a woman!!

    • It doesn’t matter my friend. America is a superpower and everything that happens there is watched  and monitored worldwide. Don’t be shallow minded!

  30. If USA was Zambia, today’s headlines will read:
    · Don’t celebrate yet, Romney tells Obama (post news paper)
    · Concede defeat, Obama urges Romney (daily newspaper)
    · 20 opposition cadres riot (peoples magazine)
    · Romney Demands Vote Recount (times of Zambia)
    · No evidence of manipulation (znbc news)
    · The Church declares elections free and fair (Radio Christian voice)
    · Trucks with suspected ballot papers crosses into USA from Mexico (Tumfweko)
    · I will not accept results, Romney tells Obama (the mirror)
    · The people behind Obama’s victory: True story uncovered… (kachepa top stories)
. OBAMA IS A TRIBALIST, (Zambian Watch Dog)

  31. @#49 Chiyeyeye
Iwe iwe iwe atishani? ati every successful erection? wanjipaya aaaha ha ha ha ha ha haaaaag yaaba. Anyway behind every succesful erection is a woman!! Aha CONGRATS Obama we wa kwesu ku Luo, fwe bena Luo.

  32. The OBAMA political machine is the best we have ever seen in Politics. Ever!! I was part of the ground game and I donated money to the campaign. David Axlerod, David Pflouf, Jim Masina, Stephanie Carter and many others are simply the best. Many Political scientists will have to study this machine and write books and dessertations on this unbeleivable organization. The ground game was empecable, the Get out the vote (GOTV) game was flowless. The Republicans still have no idea what hit them. But the Republicans must recognise that American demographics have changed and are changing. They need to add color to their platform. They need Hispanics and Blacks. They are too white today. God Bless the USA!!!!!

  33. It was also good to learn that the states of Colorado, Washington and Oregon voted to legalize the use of recreational Marijuna (Chamba). This is the first time it this has ever happened in American Politics. I may consider moving to one of these states.

    • America is a global player. The foreign policy that the U.S government has outlined for Africa and Zambia in particular will affect me. Had the Republicans won there would have been a different foreign policy. America is a superpower and so whatever happens there affects the whole world be it economically, politically even socially! Aren’t we all increasingly becoming “westernized”?

    • Mulondwe you are so interlligent, some of these bloggers dont even think when they react, they just want to blog, even if there is no sense in what they blog about.Honestly who doesnt know that America is the world? i mean when the crisis hit, it started in America and what happened next? where are we all today? Africa was mourning because AID was restricrted, It`s such a shame to read through some reactions, big up my man Mulondwe your reply is ripe.

  34. A few days ago in the Telegraph newspaper, William Hague, the British Foreign secretary, voiced his support, and wished for Romney’s success in the just concluded presidential elections.

  35. Greek protesters throwing fire bombs at police in Anthens over austerit measures and the Greek Parliament to vote over fresh cuts tonights. The Left says will not undermine Greek future in Euro.

  36. No gov money given to villages .a country like zambia should amend the constitution adding that any person holding public office shuld not be in an affair or gave a girl friend he supports .let alone give him or her position in gov.its sad to see people thinking it’s okay for sata to kiss his baby mama and life goes on.

  37. Madam Mushota i respect your wish to fall in love with wanting and wishing you were born in the west or basically saying you would pay God if you convince him to make you white but dont give foolish assesment that he won becoz he was black I live here in the states you watch TV u live in europe where its a socialistic democratic idealogue so you dont understand the interllect of Barracks coalition u dont know didly squt about the USA DEMOGRAPHICS there are more whites in America than all other races combined as we refer to them as minorities the highest is hispanics then blacks so romney cud have won if he sounded objective and besides Romney did not advocate for policies that u wud like barrack advocated for similar things that u and nick enjoy

    • its a shame that u pour racial epithets on here becoz of lining your self with the (OC ) BIATCH PLEASE understand that the United states has unprecedented wealth even though we have a fiscal cliff looming but even if it did u guys are follwers and scotland is dependant on the US economic policies if the US over economically things will be sorry for you and NICK over there so Mushota get this thru your skull if there is any sliver of rationale remainig BARRACK David plouff , David Axlerode and JIM Messina made it happed stop spewing your white right wing european conservative poison and hate this is the 21 centuary dawn for for balanced thinking in the US i have seen so many interracial relationships but either partners they dont uncut their roots and bnigga loving or wigga loving
