The opposition MMD has suffered another setback after the Supreme Court this morning nullified the election results of Lukulu West and Kapiri Mposhi Constituencies.

The Supreme Court has upheld the High court’s ruling of nullifying the election of MMD’s Misheck Mutelo as Member of Parliament for Lukulu West on account that there was corruption, bribery and illegal practices.

Last year, Judge Emelia Sunkutu declared the election of Mr. Mutelo null and void stating that the evidence before her indicated that the election was not free and fair but Mr. Mutelo appealed to the Supreme Court.

The results of the Lukulu West elections were petitioned by Patriotic Front losing candidate Eileen Imbwae.

The election of Kapiri Mposhi Member of Parliament Lawrence Zimba has also been nullified and the development means the country will undergo another by elections as per requirement in the current Constitution.

And the MMD leadership has described the development as unfortunate and regrettable.

MMD National Treasurer, Mwansa Mbulakulima, however states that the MMD, being a democratic party, respects the court ruling to nullify the two seats.

Mr. Mbulakulima further states that his party will always be prepared to participate in any elections that may take place in the country as it believes in the rule of law.

  1. What are the proposals in the draft constitution on by-elections? I hope we are not just talking but doing something to ensure in the upcoming constitution we do away with by-elections.
We only develop if we take responsibility for our own failures, admit something is not right even if we are not the ultimate beneficiaries.

  2. Accepted!!
These are corruption and bribery caused by-elections.
    Justice has prevailed

  3. De wages of sin is death and its not debatable dat de mmd has bn engaging in bribery n corruption in al de previous elections, remember de “ngolachula lobe”slogan which was synonimous wit corruption.this shud serve as a ditterent 2 wud b perpetrators.u reap wat u sow

  4. I am extremely delighted with the Supreme court judgement on the two constituencies, namely Lukulu west an Chisamba constituencies.
MMD party under the leadership of Rupiah Banda was the Most corrupt party since Zambia’s independence.
The man has NO leadership qualities. He is a great embarrassment to the people of Eastern province. He ran a government of free for all. Hence these results now.
Of all the political Parties in Zambia, I celebrate to see that it is on way to self destruction.
I HATE this party very much. Its a thorn in my flesh and a sore in my eye.

    • Slow down please, relax and recall that the psychology of anger and vengeance replaces the sense of self respect and respect for others including the need to build broken pieces. Do not repair anything unless it is broken.
My friend, do not count how many times you fall but always stand up and dust yourself. Do not measure your enemies in terms of their downfall but let them measure themselves in terms of their failures and your successes.
      Good day my friend.

  5. How can corruption during elections be curbed? So that we don’t have unneccessary bye elections? We are a Third World country whose resources should go to infrastructure not ballots

  6. My dear Thermometer (4) above; Democracy is very expensive, since it is the style of governance we have chosen we should not bemoan nor count the cost for huge money correctly spent on elections, not the money used corruptly to win elctions. Otherwise the cheapest form of governance is to reverte to Rulership of THEIR royal Highnesses in the Traditional way. It does not cost much since elections are within the royalty. Do not cry that this is too primitive, but it is much cheaper for you. May I end my comment by congratulating the listening Party UPND for not imposing Saki on L/stone during the forthcoming bye- elections although we have ended up with another re-cycled candidate.

  7. i dont appreciate ama ruling ifia buwelewele PF Become dictaship company buying judges etc mind you winter is justice minister what do you expect from the judge afuna nchito… lwenu ifwe tuli naba obama tulenwa milk na makoko, amanama fiakuposa fie.

  8. And check their farms, you could excuvate Billions of kwachas. that is all they knew to do “best” corruption and theft.

  9. how about passing a law that stops these guys from ever standing as MPs ever again in any constituency since they have proven that they cannot be trusted, i mean all those found guilty of malpractices during elections?

  10. Its realy sad to ve by elections in athird world country.those resources which wil be used on the election cud go to areas that wud help pipo lead better lives.in kapiri ther are areas were comunities don’t ve acces to clean water, lukulu west is the same.

  11. We need put in some deterents in the constitution to curb the scourge of corruption in election campaigns to avoid all these unnecessary by elections, something like life bans for the ones found guilty to ever participate in politics again.
