A researcher from the University of Zambia School of agricultural sciences has attributed the increase in breast and cervical cancers in Zambia to consumption of foods that contain soya.

The researcher has further disclosed that soya foods are leading to the development of other non communicable diseases such as leukemia, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Martin Sampa made the revelation on Friday when he appeared before the parliamentary committee on health, community development and social welfare which is looking at breast, cervical cancer and diabetes in Zambia.

Mr. Sampa fears that soya which has become part of the ‘health diet’ for most Zambians is found in off-shelf foods such as mealie meal, biscuits, instant soups, margarines, cooking oils and bread from the groceries and supermarkets yet the product is toxic.

He has submitted to the Dr Brian Chituwo led committee that Soya is listed in the poisonous plant database, among other foodstuffs that cause tumors and hormone disruption.

Mr. Sampa regrets that Soya is being portrayed as the ultimate health food and has become omnipresent in the country’s diet presumably to overcome protein deficiency.

He has advised government to quickly come up with a policy review at the highest level on the continued inclusion of what he termed as “toxic food in Zambian foods and diets.”

Mr. Sampa who has tabled before the committee most imported foods which contain soya states that countries such as Israel, France and Britain have advised their citizens against feeding children with soya.

And commitee chairperson Brian Chituwo says the information presented by the researcher is vital in establishing why cancers have become common in Zambia.

With the coming in office of the PF, Government has put more emphasis to fight cancer.

First lady Dr Christine Kaseba has been pioneering the fight against cancer.

  1. Scare monger Sampa Wechipuba we, what research have you done to come up with such a sweeping statement. Why soya? Is Soya the only ingredient to have increased in Zambian diet. What controls have you done to pinpoint soya! Pls distinguish fact from opinion. Soya and soya products are longtime traditional staples in china and other Asian countries.

    • Why do you attack people who want to help our society with baseless claims? Why do you criticize Sampa for doing his job and warning the people about soya? What research have you done to refute his findings? Why can’t you google and search the internet to find out why soya is bad for health. In this internet age, do you need to argue with anyone without searching the internet. You don’t need to go to the library to verify anything. We have internet. It shows that you do not have internet and may be you have internet on your phone and cannot browse. For your information to check the effects of soya check this link below.

    • Sir or madam, please give us your counter research results so that we may better understand your rebuttal against Sampa. Remember how the consumption of apples has variously been a good and bad thing over time. It is a good idea to open a book or carry out an experiment instead of relying on what you have been told over and over again without your own personal involvement… I humbly rest.

    • America at it again.
First they supplied blood to hospitals in the late 80s, now we have HIV.
Then they want to eliminate their overstock of animal feeds called Soya, by convincing Zambians that is healthy food. It all started in mid 1990s. There was even a FAO programme called food for work. Today we have all these cancers we never seen before.
      Believe in Sampa & Chituwo

    • why attack someone giving you information that can save your life. What research have you yourself done to call people wechipuba? if you have nothing to contribute please stay away

    • That is the problem with some Zambians. Research is what makes countries tick. The US and China have developed becos of research. U are using this device today becos of research. HIV was discovered and later ARVs found becos of research. Today u may be alive becos of ARVs or even malaria drugs which are a result of research. Lets not condemn works being done by our academics. Perhaps what u needed to ask for was for a full research report to check for originality and that is if u can read a report.

    • Many people with some health problems or conditions have been recommended to take soya milk as opposed to dairy milk. So this is a danger? Others are on Dairy Free and Glutten Free diets. This information from UNZA must be investigated further enough before concluding definitively.

    • I agree with you. This is not the way research findings are presented.. He has no basis to prove what he is saying. There is no objection, methodology, findings, or even a disclaimer. He is having a conclusion but not showing how he got his so called facts. Go back to the drawing Bwana “researcher” and follow ethically approved protocol before you start presenting anything to the MOH.

    • soya is listed in the poisonous plant data base.refute dat. dont just shoot ur friend just becoz u r capable of opening ur mouth like sakeni.there r links.read n make a judgement urself.u fool.educate urself

    • This is a fact. Soy is known to cause cancer. Zambian’s you need to listen. Don’t just criticize. It is a known fact that women should limit their consumption of soy. Soy causes estrogenic stimulation, which can cause breast cancer. Treatment for cancer involves blocking estrogenic stimulation.

    • Dear Editor
iam a pharmacist and disappointed that Dr. Chituwo did not do any critical appraisal to Mr Sampa’s findings, You don’t arrive at such a conclusion by just displaying boxes of syoa contain food staffs such as soya chunks without giving strong scientific basis, let me just put across some simple arguments here. Mr Sampa argues that cervical cancer has increased due to consuming soya containing food staff, well I take it Mr Sampa is a google or wiki Pedia harvesting scientist. First and foremost Mr Sampa must have spelled out other major causes of cervical cancer and challenge us.
Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the major cause of the main types of cervical cancer, HPV is a virus like, small pox etc no wonder we have a vaccine for this disease. Other causes of…

    • 1. Smoking
If you smoke, you are more likely to develop squamous cell cervical cancer. Researchers have found cancer causing chemicals (benzyrene) from cigarette smoke in the cervical mucus of women who smoke. They think that these chemicals damage the cervix. There are cells in the lining of the cervix called Langerhans cells that specifically help fight against disease. These cells do not work so well in smokers.
      2. A weakened immune system
If you have a weakened immune system, then your risk of many cancers, including cervical cancer, is higher than average. People with HIV and AIDS, or people taking drugs to suppress their immune systems after an organ transplant, are more at risk of developing cervical cancer So probably HIV could be more linked to the prevalence of cancer now in…

    • Zambia than soya.
      3. The pill
A number of studies have shown that taking the pill could increase a woman’s risk of developing cervical cancer. You know a lot of women take microgynon in Zambia this could as well be linked than soya
      4. Circumcision
Some research suggests that women with partners who have been circumcised are less likely to get cervical cancer. This may be because men who are circumcised are less likely to carry HPV infection.
      5. Your sex life
You will quite often hear that women who started having sex young or women who have a lot of different sex partners are more likely to get cervical cancer. But really, this is only true because the earlier you start having sex and the more men you have sex with, the more likely you are to pick up an infection with a high risk…

    • Its so interesting again if you look at the causes of breast cancer 80% of them also cause cervical cancer such
      1. Hormones like oestrogen and progesterone found in most of the pills,
      Risk factors you cannot change
Gender: Being a woman is the main risk for breast cancer. While men also get the disease, it is about 100 times more common in women than in men.
Age: The chance of getting breast cancer goes up as a woman gets older. About 2 of 3 women with invasive breast cancer are 55 or older when the cancer is found.
Genetic risk factors: About 5% to 10% of breast cancers are thought to be linked to inherited changes (mutations) in certain genes. The most common changes are those of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Women with these gene changes have up to an 80% chance of getting breast…

    • Family history: Breast cancer risk is higher among women whose close blood relatives have this disease.
Breast radiation early in life: Women who have had radiation treatment to the chest area (as treatment for another cancer) earlier in life have a greatly increased risk of breast cancer. The risk varies with the patient’s age when she had radiation. And many other documented causes too long to list, in all these researches that have been conducted by renowned researchers soya has never been linked to be a risk factor.

I find Mr Sampa being academically overzealous and you don’t make such conclusions without eliminating other factors, in short Mr Sampa can one day just work up and say all people chilanga will have lung cancer due to asbestos contamination from chilanga cement plant.

    • What was mr Sampa’s sample size, Did he look at the disease prevalence rate in provinces like luapula and northern provinces where they eat cilemba too much and compare it with southern province.

    • @The Genius: while the website whose link you provide supports your stance, it is by no means a reliable source because it is not a peer reviewed article nor is it a known peer reviewed research source so we can only expect to take their claims with a grain…no a whole pitcher of salt.

    • It is hard for most Zambians to distinguish between the arguer and the argument. Instead of questioning the validity of an argument, they want your skin.

  2. Research findings and ultimate reports must be based on comprehensive studies. If Sampa is based at Unza and in the School of Agriculture, what is the main objective of his study programme. What varieties of soya plants has he screened? What molecular biological parameters has he applied to arrive at such sweeping statements?

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of cells. Human bodies have a p53 gene which produces a protein that monitors the integrity of DNA. But if p53 is absent or becomes non-functional, then the cells will divide repeatedly and controlably – a condition known as cancer.
Can Sampa attribute various types of cancer to soya? Besides has he identified a molecule in soya that triggers cancer. Sampa is simply playing to gallery of ignorant politicians for personal gain…

    • Yeah! I thought he will tell us that he conducted a research for him to come with that conclusion. Alas! This statement looks like it is just an opinion. No empirical evidence discussed……Dr. Chituwo was supposed to challenge Sampa to present his paper (research) so that it can be reviewed and critically appraised!!!

    • yes you seem knowledgeable,,, now tell me something on homosexuality and soya… can i blame soya for making mmembe´s homosexual tendences?

    • I am glad you at least tried to explain this in a very simple way for most on this blog to understand. Additionally, we all need to understand that cancer causes are multifactorial. these may in turn result in gene mutations such as you mention here – changes in P53, resulting in lack of apoptosis (programmed cell death). This Sampa guy does not clarify whether this is a study conducted in the , in which case his findings cannot at this point be applicable to human beings, and or if he actually conducted a randomized study in human beings – if so, these findings must be published in a peer reviewed journal – his so called study seems completely FLAWED.

And as for all of you bashing Mwansa Kabinga – please try to be informed consumers – there are standards for research –

    • The researcher is a full time PhD student at Unza. He has PhD qualified supervisors who understand the research. PhDs are supposed to generate new knowlwdge..this is what is going on here.

    • funny how pipo make sweeping statements b4 reading the report.ask 4 it frm him n then take it up frm there.dont have phobia 4 new knowledge

  3. Mm, I will just be eating kapenta, finkubala, fish, village chicken, chibwabwa, kalembula, katapa, bondwe, mankolobwe, impwa, lubanga and lubangula sashila (in groundnut), okra, pupwe, mushroom, mangoes, avocado, lemon, orange, guava, banana etc, which are fresh farm produce or dried staff. In agric we say “A CHILD WHO HAS NEVER LIVED ON A FARM THINKS THAT BREAKFAST COMES FROM A SUPERMARKET”. Natural foods are the best. Not processed and chemicalised staff in town. Awe lelo twalaya mukulya impundu, imfungo, amasaala, amabungo na masuku.

    • Nga wasashila mankolobwe wanaya na kabwali katute atemwa amasaka, wesu, wikandaba iyo. Batila tukolwe twishibene tupeleshanya amabungo. Nani nkakwitako ku mwandi mukukomba lubanga!

    • Hello my fellow philosopherGalileo, only few of us can understand sense in you.
But most of those foods are from the great land of Luapula & Bemba-land.

  4. Thats not true, there is plethora of literature that points to the fact that Soya infact tends to kill cancer cells. I urge you to undertake further research to substantiate your claim. However, I agree that processed foods, especially canned foods may contain toxics which could cause cancer. please do not mislead the Nation.

    • Studies also show soy causes cancer. A close friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. Other than the standard treatment, one of the recommendations by the oncologists was to stop eating soy to help prevent estrogenic stimulation. Second recommendation, stop eating sugar in all forms. Cancer cells feed on glucose alone. If carbohydrates(sugars) are eliminated in diet, cancer cells are starved they die. The third was start eating foods that prevent angiogenesis. Foods like cooked tomatoes. This prevents blood vessels from growing to the cancer cells . This will prevent the cancer from growing. Zambia needs information like this.

  5. i am clausless on this topic of cancer attributed to soya but this researcher hasn’t given us the hard facts and what experiments he did to arrive at this conclusion but weather his right or wrong i can not judge because as far as i am concerned the commercial industry will never tell us the consumer that there product has side effects which are harmful, all there interested in is profits and the government as well. for say the cheap sub standard ARV’s, if they know Tobacco is harmful why even allow it to be sold in the first place, money money, corruption, selfishness and greediness. the well being of citizens is upon our Politicians but thats a least of there worries all they do care about is politiking, insulting, causing By elections and giving fake promises.

    • I took a tour of the internet and somewhere someone said the kind that the Asians eat is fermented not the kind we eat, variety notwithstanding. Also, some Asians stated unequivocally that Soya does not constitute a large portion of their meals each time it is taken. Like most grains, it is taken in the company of several other dishes. Besides fermentation, in my view, eating it in moderation seems to be the key in all that we eat.

Because seriously speaking, you will also find some arguments, science based, that corn, the way we eat it has some negative effects on our health; we just don’t have the research interests and perhaps funding to refute such assertions including this one. I would not brush it off. There is definitely something to talk about. Rape is another one.

  6. Soya has for long been known to bad for ur health. copy link and paste in ur browser:

    ezinearticles.com/?Soybean-Side-Effects—
    Mad-About-Soy&id=718182

  7. Tofu, tempeh, edamame, soymilk and miso are a few of the soy foods people around the world enjoy every day. Soy is one of the few plant foods with all the amino acids your body needs to make protein. You may see claims on food packages linking soy protein to lower risk of coronary heart disease. Because soy contains estrogen-like compounds, there was fear that soy may raise risk of hormone-related cancers. Evidence shows this is not true. Soy’s possible effects on health is an active area of research.

  8. This is another example of how big industries make money at the expense of human health.Studies show that Asians have low incidence of cancers and credit their traditional diets that include soy.however what people don’t realise is Asians eat small amounts of primarily fermented soy.In contrast to the westernised soy that is non fermentated and you fins processed soy snacks containing up to 20g in one serving. We also know that isoflavones in soy mimic oestrogen.Different people will react different to this. But studies show it lowers testosterone in men,can cause breast canncers nin women and neurotoxicity in infants(israel minister of health issued an advisory that infanst shouls avoid soy milk altogether)

  9. This is the age of Knowledge we all have easy access to knowledge .Find out things for yourself instead of waiting for industry sponsored research or studies to tell you certain foods are good or bad.Bottom line is Industries want to make money and yes even at your expense.Besides if you are diagnosed with cancer you are worth $300 000 to the pharmaceutical industry. I applaud the first lady with her efforts to fight cancer but I’m just worried she is being used by Big Pharma to sell their toxic drugs to Zambia.Maybe thats why they are giving her so many awards and flying her everywhere?

  10. You may disagree with Sampa. But the only thing he may have achieved is to get the government and/or its agencies thinking about this issue of the foods we are consuming. Let the public debate this matter vigorously.

  11. Oh just look at his last name , just look at his name- SAMPA and we all know were he comes from. Can anybody from that region of the country do an honest, rigorous and sincere research without being crooked and cheating in the process? I rest my case without mentioning any tribe, but leave it to you to judge for yourselves

    • Tonga Bull you really are the cow you have named yourself after. Miserable tribalist. You are the people who are bringing Zambia down. Atase!

  12. People of Zambia where are we going the report given by the Reasercher is prematuary given first there was a need to do a serious more reaserch not from one reasercher.
Please let’s not just wake up and report such sensitive issues to the Nation
My appeal is can the minister of health clear the air Zambians wants to know the truth obout Soya causing cancer

  13. More work need to be done. There is no authentic statistical data to support the conclusion. Maybe we can find out from Central Statistics Office and The National Council of Scientific Research if they have any data on this subject. For now as it is, we should consume Soya products in moderation.

  14. @Tonga bull, waba utumeno nangu nshakumonapo. Say something else dude… Do you need to suckle sour milk direct from a cow for you to think properly?

    • Please if you want to talk to me use English please..this is not your tribesmen website or Tonga if you want me to understand you , than using your primitive language

    • @Chindakwanda-Galileo Galilei#20
What kind of an identity is this, brother/sister? Slowly sink into your seat and pop out your eyes. You have an issue with my people and, we need to sort it out right now. I do not like your kind. You understand me?
Leave my mate alone, the Tonga Bull. This is a friendly reminder. I have loads of derogatory language ready for any target which attracts my attention. If you know what is good for your kind, then heed my warning. Good morning brother Tonga Bull. I offer no apologies for my status in society and I am highy educated. My intelligence is not lower than average.
You have a tendency of doctoring Tongas’ reports for your own egos. Tongas are no fools.

  15. Kind of alarming statement without precise figures and reference randomised control studies. Presumably he has done a meta-analysis of the relevant trials . There might evidence, it is not as clear it as Mr Sampa’s statement.

  16. @Chi Tonga bull, I know this is what you enjoy, bullocking people for their tribe. What I am telling you is that you are a stupid fool mwana. Talk about cancer and give us plausible causes for the increased occurence in the country. You the guy who is primitive y’ know, and may be your primordial language. Get out of your tribal shell.

    • Wash your empty shell and fill it up with the sense of uncontaminate pride. The psychology of self blame leads you to a dangerous path of boxing your thinking. The sense of oppressing yourself knowingly and unknowingly gives rise to perpetual unwarranted insults against Tongas. This stems from childhood preconceived ideas and exposure to incorrect parenting styles. Your background has now manifested in what you are constructing about your easy targets such all Tongas and their decendants.

    • @BOOM & WHATEVER#20.1 an omission above
From the above post, about the last sentence
…… in what you are constructing about your easy targets such as all Tongas and their decendants.

    • @BOOM & WHATEVER, your guy or whatever he is to you, started this imprudent and unwarranted attack on a person of “my people”, for an attempt at explaining the possible causes of the increased cases of cancer in Zambia. Instead of debating the issue at hand, he resorts to mischievous labelling of persons of a certain grouping with percieved negative attributes. Please, do know that you are simply a stray, rabid d-g trying to sink your “infectious teeth” in my flesh.

I followed how you shamelessly bared your integrity before one cheeky Mushota. If you did not succeed in your horrible scheme to make a name, I am no plaything my friend. I am not willing to go on exchanging words with your type, self opinionated and overated dullard. F.u.c.k off…

    • Look who is talking about integrity. You have the audacity to hint about suggestive empty threats of which you have no freaken idea of what saying to me, you little b.i.t.c.h.
You attacked my boy, Tonga Bull, for nothing you fat a.s.s. , m.o.t.h.e.r. f.u.c.k.e.r.

Overrated, hahaha, pity. I gat them money boy, damn real cash. If I f.u.c.k.e.n want something I do not ask for the price. In fact I keep on buying online and I wear Gucci clothes. On the other hand, you wear clothes worn by commoners. I do not go to shopping malls. Owners of expensive boutiques supply me with designers gear right in my study room. What are you driving? Let me guess b.i.t.c.h a secondhand Germany car or a Japanese used car. I do not drive a car more than one year,I always drive cars worth more than $300,000.00 All my wheels are imported and are customised

    • Ask your m.a.m.a to spoil you ,you little p.u.s.s.y ass b.i.t.c.h
You wanna get them s.h.i.t I will f.u.c.k.e.n crack your p.u.n.k.y ass head wide open.
Keep on dreaming with your m.a.m.a lying next to you with her fat greasy p.u.s.s.y facing your damn little a.s.s
You are in a deep s.h.i.t you p.u.n.c.k.y. a.s.s hole. You have no freaken idea of what you are up against. You sewer rat. You have no idea of what you said to me, sewer rat.

  17. I am shocked by this research study. Sad that the paper is not available on line for others to read for themselves and fully understand the intensity of the work done to reach this conclusion. we do not know the following; 1. What was the population studied? 2. where is the population studied residing? 3. what was the age distribution of the population in the study? 4. what were the sources of the water that the population was drinking from? 5. what industrial activities were going on upwind from them? 6. were they living near some mine dumps? 7. What were the occupations of the bread earners in the study? etc. there are too many questions unanswered, and it is dangerous to come to the conclusion in the report without examining all the players in the environment.

    • So why is there more cancer these days in Zambia than during our grandparents time? The epidemiology terminology’s and parameters you read from a book produced in the West will not help us.Why can’t Zambians think for themselves instead of blindly following the West.America has lots of cancer no prizes for guessing why.

    • Ba Mulenga, good point. It has been scientifically proven that when the offspring feed on what the ancestors did not, its body may exhibit a reaction. A number of studies that I don’t have time to cite here have proven that there is a great prevalence of cancers and other ailments in the Native American communities because they eat modern foods that their bodies cannot digest well. Obesity is more prevalent in these communities than in any other in America. Native communities are responding with the establishment of natural foods market network, connecting native communities. You can say they are on to something and perhaps we can take a leaf from that.

    • The only player you need to understand in this game is Western pharmaceuticals making a big killing over cancer. Understand that and the rest will fall in place. Do the study on the subject yourself first and study the politics of cancer then things will begin to fall in place.

    • The best best thing someone can consume for AIDS or HIV is extra virgin coconut oil. It is very effective against viruses, bacteria and fungi. Google it the research is astounding. It has been demonized because it is a saturated fat but research has shown that it does not carry the same risks as other saturated fats because it has medium-chain triglycerides. Right now in the U.S extra virgin coconut oil and extra virgin red palm oil (chinkondya) are in demand. The key is not to consume hydrogenated coconut oil, red palm oil or any hydrogenated oil they are really bad.

  18. Fake, all fake! No research, no data, no findings… We want local findings, show us evidence, tell us how soya affects our immune system, tell us what gets attacked in our bodies by soya? We need a scientific research, lab tests, human tests…

  19. I cant agree or disagree with Mr Sampa but clearly such sweeping statements will need firm and detailed evidence. My only contribution is perhaps to throw in a view that the increased technology in cancer diagnosis and awareness may well have a part to play in what may be a perceived view of “increased cancer” in Zambia.

  20. Proof of cancer association is by in-vivo experiments and has to do with mutations at a molecular or genetic level. In-vitro studies go through a series of animal studies before any human studies can be conducted that should show the same outcomes claimed by in-vivo studies. There are however other less scientific observational studies that may just show that cancers are more prevalent or commoner in subjects that feast on Soya. Even these involve Case-Control Studies Or Randomised Controlled in which one follows up two randomly assigned groups of which one should be on Soya to see if truly a significant portion develops cancers. They can only be done in collaboration with a hospital setting. This did not happen and I can safely label the researcher as confabulating. It should not be…

  22. That good workmanship , the government should put more money in research than treatment . That’s good modern medicine .lets hope the politician will do something DR chituwo we are looking up to you.

  23. It is surely sad that someone of such respectable standing in society and educational circles can get so reckless with informaction dissemination. Not is this article only alarmist in nature, but lacks scientific backing. Beware of bloggers whose job it is to sway consumers towards desired results which are usually driven by industrial propaganda. The subject requires further interrogation based on scientific research.

    • Ba Noah, have you read the report? Do no base your arguments on what has been reported by teh press; the tend to be sensational in order to sell

  24. America has very high statistics of cancer..no prizes for guessing why.You want to import their food and lifestyles? You import their diseases too. They came and told us we were primitive for using a calabash in stead of plastic containers..now research is showing the plastic leaches into food or drink. And plastic is destroying the environment. They told us our medicinal herbs were primitive, now they finding out that natural foods and plants have medicinal value, they told us breast feeding was backwards and primitive now WHO recommends breastfeeding for 2years and countries are banning sale of formula.Go figure!

    • Mulenga, they also told us use of DDT to kill mosquito to reduce malaria in the tropics was an environmental killer but it has been found this American scientist faked his research work and WHO has now quietly unbanned the use of DDT after they had awarded him the Nobel prize.

  25. Are we really talking about soya, or about genetically modified organism (GMO) soya?

Because soya has been a staple of the Japanese diet for centuries (like Tofu), and they are known for their very low incidences of cancer and heart disease.

So are we really not talking about GMOs?

GMOs should be banned from Zambia. And antother thing – people should be switching to organic agriculture, which produces much healthier crops than anything that has been sprayed with chemicals, or that has been fed too few minerals.

If you increase the amount of trace elements fed to a crop, you can

    1) get food and seeds with a much longer shelf life
    2) need much less NPK fertilizer or pesticides
    3) eliminate mineral deficiency in people

Grinding down local rocks is a cheap way to do…

  26. Back in the 19th century, there used to be a feud between Justus von Liebig, who saddled the world with the NPK obsession, and Julius Hensel, who thought broadbased trace element plant nutricion was the way to go.

Von Liebig won out, and how we’re poisoning groundwater with nitrogen because we’re feedin the plant more than it needs without supplying it all the trace elements that they need instead. So you have the paradox of plants going hungry, while being poisoned by nitrogen. This creates imbalance which naturally attracts insect pests, which then have to be sprayed for…

The cheapest solution is to grind down local rocks (basalt, granite, lava) to dust, which can be absorbed by the plant roots or bacteria, which then make them part of the natural cycle.

  27. Evidence, evidence evidence please!
Soya contains Oestrogenic substances yes, but there is more Oestrogen in the oral contraceptive pill than in Soya. If so, why not ban oral contraceptive pills?
Cervical cancer is a sexually transmitted disease, we know that because it is extremely rare among women who are virgins or start having sex later in life.

  28. The apparent increase in cancer diseases,is just that there’s more awareness and relatively more and better screening facilities and equipment,Soya link is far fetched and very disjointed, patali!!

    • Another one of the cheap thinking learnt from school which goes hand in hand with a badly formulated idea of what ‘progress’ is.

  29. Consumption of Japanese Tofu which is a soya product has been credited with reducing the rates of cancer in Japan. I do not know what kind of research Sampa did to come up with his so-called findings.

    • @39 Patel is an Indian, I strongly believe their is no single thing an Indian can believe in a Zambian. Indians can’t even be convinced that Zambians are Africans and are a black race.

    • Mr/Mrs/Ms/Dr Patel, how can you make such a reckless statement when you have not even seen and entire research paper. Get it and read it, analyze it and tell us why it is what you are saying.

    • Gee, was sleeping all these years, so Monsato is indeed in Zambia! Mawe ….. I am mouless. Just to add a bit of steam to the debate on this forum, sometime in June 2011 about 22 people died in Germany after eating Soya sprouts. E-coli was blamed for this …. and many people stopped eating soya sprouts for months in Germany and France.

  30. @39 Patel is an Indian, I strongly believe their is no single thing an Indian can believe in a Zambian. Indians can’t even be convinced that Zambians are Africans and are a black race.
If bra-lie Indians are offended, do something to Sata who befriend you, no one cares about you untouchables. The Zambian research is very right.
You Indians can eat your Soya and we will your gods = Cows!

  31. Disappointed by the article BUT MORE SO by the Responses it has drawn!! This is becoz for all responders, VERY OBVIOUSLY with access to the internet, instead of doing a bit of research on the web, WOULD RATHER PEDDLE THEIR IGNORANCE & FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT!!! It take less than 2 min!!! to bring up a list of studies & a myriad of comments which give you references for their basis of argument, such as this one I was directed to: http://www.whitelotusclinic.ca/blog/dr-fiona-nd/soy-and-fertility-in-women/ ; also http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=soybean-fertility-hormone-isoflavones-genistein&page=2
I leave it to you to educate yourselves!!
IGNORANCE is the biggest problem we have in Zed, BIGGER THAN CORRUPTION, & is PEDDLED MORE THAN anything in zed!!!

  32. mHi baane, I missed this alarming news. i run a small kafarm in kapiri mposhi. i keep cattle for beef and afew pigs. i grow soya on small scale for our feed. 90% of the feed contains soya mixed with maize bran. in my few years of running this farm i ve not seen any tummers in my animals. i would have loved my tribes man to state how many guinea peas were subjected to eating this amount, type of soya developed cancereous cells. thou i know the of sch of agric at unza cant afford tujohn white. mwebo basampa mutekenye sana. not all that we ready on the internet is true conduct the research yoself from what u ve read. by the way where is prof. Nyambe post graduate seminars? S ampa must ve presented his findings at that seminar, we wud asked more questions than a parliament of owls.

  33. Sampa’s public pronouncements may be a case of cut and paste of data googled from the internet. However, since it as been scientifically documented that human bodies are endowed with a p53 gene which is reputed to supress the development of tumours. This gene monitors the replication of DNA and involved in promoting the repair of damaged DNA. If p53 is rendered non-functional, this will give rise to uncontrolled growth of cells, a condition medially defined as CANCER.

Cancers were rare in the past 20-30 years. Current prolideration of cancers may be attributed to many factors that may include GMOs flooding our market. This is a challenge for the Schools of Medicines to investigate if pesticides are denaturing the valuable p53 gene. Sampa must publish before alarming the public.

  34. This research is not authentic! The first question one would ask is, what was the contrast for this research? What research methodologies were used to come to this embarrassing conclusion? How long has it taken Sampa to come to this conclusion? She is a shame of a researcher!

    • John, already I can see that you have not even seen and read his research paper. This is the problem with Zedians. You are asking for research methodology, my foot! Go get his paper, read it and you may even engage the author on certain points you may need clarification. This is what the real leaned ones who have done research before do. You dont just speculate like you do. What the media has done is just to give you the heads up about some research findings; they cant give details so you cant give comments based on that.

  35. I disagree with The report given by the researcher Mr Sampa to the parliamentary select committee on Health attributing intake of soya products as the cause of Breast and Cervical cancer.
The research needed the unvolvement of other disciplines such as health and Nutrionists or dieticians in order to come up with conclusive results but from his report it appears it was a one man’s research and an academic one NOT a real and involving patients.

  36. Fear of knowledge and new discoveries in science will kill you.My man Sampa has put it straight to you what is this noise all about? you will die an ignorant people.lets embrass the findings and desist from eating nyama soya.

Is it that you zambians who live on a dollar a day are so in love with nyama soya?
    have you ever heard of

    brain cancer
    cervical cancer
    skin cancer
    lung cancer
    breast cancer
    dyclomicides cancer
    inglomide cancer
    lumbersyclosis cancer
    anusnyosis cancer

one in every 15 people in zambia suffer from cancer.especially cancer of ignorance which affects the brain.

    • i agree with you Nyama soya.13 out of 15 people with cancer are tongas.even fred mnmbe suffers from anusnyosis cancer. typical of tongas

    • @bembaman#49.1
You p.u.n.k.y ass b.i.t.c.h. we do not give it a damn about your fat ass mouth on steroids. Ask your m.a.ma. about her greasy p.u.s.s.y. on steroids. I hate your whole crew and f.u.c.k. you all. God damn it, son

  37. STATICS SHOWS THAT OF ALL THE TRIBES IN ZAMBIA, ONLY TONGAS DIE A LOT FROM CANCER. Dr Manda called me to confirm that prostate cancer is very common among the tongas. As for the people from northern cancer is not common.

    • I do not care about your damn f.u.c.k.e.n. lies s.u.c.ke.r. Just shut your mouth and look at your m.a.m.a. ‘s legs hanging from your shoulders with your d.i.c.k. moving back and forth. F.u.c.k. you p.u.s.s.y. boy.
Tell your m.a.m.a. to kick your fat ass, p.u.s.s.y. boy.

  38. No 1 actually wecipuba niwebo. Even here in the US just some concerns on males have been noted, e.g. one site says, “The estrogen-like properties in soy milk may adversely affect male sperm count. This will unlikely cause fertility problems in most men and research on the subject remains far from conclusive. Discuss any concerns you have with your doctor.”

Don’t rebut the researcher but just listen more and investigate further fu.

  39. His research may have some validity but I have not read the actual documentation so I won’t say much about it. I can say however that we all know that we are always told to take all things in moderation. That because anything taken in excess or in an unbalanced way can and will have adverse effects on human health. For instance, rice as staple in countries around the world, is high in arsenic content, a known toxic substance. Cashews has are poisonous if not prepared properly. Over consumption of alcohol leads not only to alcoholism but has other effects on the liver and kidneys. As with an research, I urge we not take it at face value or ignore other research.
Please look at pubmed.com or nih.gov for research info from around the world.

  40. If Mr. Sampa / UnZA could make this research available on their site or upload it some where we could access it I would love to review it. Research is important but so if review of the methods and protocols used which many here are crying for hence the skepticism. There’s also some useless commentary with insults and invalid information, none of which contribute to productive discussion or debate.

  41. @BOOM & WHATEVER

Brother or Sister, you gotta sort out your problems. You should be ashamed to write the crap you do online, remember you do not need to be alone in your study to justify your dirty language, rather be proud to be respect yourself. No toothpaste can clean your foul mouth, your mama or papa (if you ever had parents LOL) must be ashamed to have you as a sibling. I feel sorry for you, honestly can’t you logically debate an issue and help those others that might not have the means to research for themselves? SHAME ON YOU! If you want to challenge me personally, I can give you my email address…

  42. Ba Sampa..where has your paper been published? Has it it been peer reviewed…Please post the link so that we can read about it ..

  43. Martin Sampa you are an intellectual who is sopposed to back your arguments with facts. How many Zambians have died of cancer attributed to eating of soyabeans? you have no statistics to this effect. Your information was misleading and lacked facts from a scientist of your calibre. Pliz save Zambia by facts.

  44. No wonder we can’t fix. Always looking outside of ourselves to find answers to address our own historical experiences. What has the experience and lives of the Japanese, Chinese or Asia have to do with Zambians? We don’t know what else the Japanese or Chinese are doing when they are not eating soya. So where does all this cheap thinking come from? Our education system, isn’t it? The main point that a lot of Mr Sampa’s critics are missing is that cancer is a big economic industry of Western countries. The Western pharmaceuticals will not stand Mr Sampa’s research findings. Now that his research is out in the public the powers that be will work hard to destroy his credibility. Ignorance of what game is being played will bring about our death. Better wake up and realise Mr Sampa is…
