The Government has given the Livingstone City Council (LCC) a one-month ultimatum to convince the business community in the city to paint their premises and enhance cleanliness in the city ahead of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly.

LOCAL Government and Housing Minister Emerine Kabanshi said all unattractive buildings in Livingstone should be cleaned and painted within the course of next month failure to which she would take appropriate action using the powers vested in her as a Minister.

She was speaking in Livingstone on Wednesday when a team of cabinet ministers met various stakeholders in the tourist capital to prepare for the UNWTO General Assembly.

“When I come here in Livingstone next month, I should find a clean city while all dirty buildings should be painted. If the business entities fail to paint their buildings, I ask the council to paint the premises but property owners will have to pay for such works,” she said.

She said the Government wanted Livingstone to be the cleanest city in the country and hence all residents should stand up and ensure that the city was clean.

She urged the private sector to sentitise members of the public on the dangers of throwing litter anyhow.

On street vendors, Ms Kabanshi said the Government wanted to have constructive engagement with the vendors on mutual respect.

She said the Government was committed to ensuring that vendors operated in a good environment.

Ms Kabanshi said her Ministry had already disbursed funding to the council to improve sanitation in markets, roads, drainage system, street lighting as well as to Southern Water and Sewerage Company (SWASCO) to improve water supply in the city ahead of the UNWTO General Assembly.

She said more than 250 bins would be sent to Livingstone to beef up cleanliness in the city while five fire tenders would also be dispatched to the tourist capital.

“MR. KABIMBA HAS ADVISED PRES. SATA TO RECALL OR RESHUFFLE ZAMBIA’S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO THE UK COL. BIZWAYO NKUNIKA BECAUSE HE DOES NOT TRUST MR. NKUNIKA & SOME EASTERNERS AS THE PRES WILL BE EXPECTED TO VISIT UK ALMOST EVERY TWO MONTHS FOR MEDICATION, A SITUATION THAT MAY RESULT IN TOO MUCH LEAKAGES.

WHAT IS EAST GOT TO DO WITH THE PRESIDENT’S FUTURE VISITS TO UK? ONLY DOGS CAN KNOW.

CAN ANY ONE SEAL INFO. LEAKAGES IN THIS INTERNET ERA?…
PRESIDENT SATA TO BE VISITING UK EVERY TWO MONTHS FOR MEDICATION?

    WATCH THIS SPACE…..

  2. The power vested in Kabanshi is to paint buildings herself.
What color are the building going to be? That PF green is better than the Cell-tel blood-red, the famous Zambian color.

  3. NOT ONLY LIVINGSTONE SHOULD PAINT ALL THE BUSINESS BUILDING BUT EVEN LUSAKA ,NDOLA,KITWE,KABWE AND EVEN CHIPATA. THESE PLACES ARE HORRIBLE WITH MANY BUILDINGS NOT PAINTED FOR YEARS. THIS EXCERCISE SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO ALL CITIES AND TOWNS AROUND ZAMBIA.THE COUNCIL SHOULD NOT GRANT TRADERS LICENCE IF THEIR BUILDING ARE NOT PAINTED AND MAINTAINED REGULARY.FULL STOP

  5. “On street vendors, Ms Kabanshi said the Government wanted to have constructive engagement with the vendors on mutual respect”. What exactly does this mean?

    • It means they are scared of the vendors (and their votes) but can boss shopkeepers around and demand they paint their stores with impunity.

  6. I hope this is the beggining of some sanity in the zambian towns. one can tell they have crossed the boarder just by the what greats them on either side. in zambia one is greeted by shanty compounds and alot of trush allover, while if cross the border to any of our neighbouring countries you cant even see a paper on the ground. Zambia is our country we dont expect outsiders to come and clean up for us. charity beggins at home.

  7. Extend this to all block wall fences in the nation….those grey awful structures we see are incomplete as they need a lick of paint on them!!

  8. Kwena I agree when I look at the walls in Lusaka they are drab and dreary. May be we should have a law againt security walls mwe

  9. Airtel and mtn will move into Livingstone soon to paint people. Shops with their crazy colours this must stop
